Sir Henry Cole (15 July 1808 – 18 April 1882) was an English civil servant and inventor who facilitated many innovations in commerce and education in 19th century Britain. Cole is credited with devising the concept of sending greetings cards at Christmas time, introducing the world's first commercial Christmas card in 1843.
Henry Cole was born in Bath, and educated at Christ's Hospital in London. He began his career at the age of 15 at the Record Commission. His criticisms of the Commission's activities were an important factor in the debates that led to the Public Record Office Act 1838, and the establishment of the new Public Record Office, in which Cole was appointed an Assistant Keeper.
From 1837 to 1840, he worked as an assistant to Rowland Hill and played a key role in the introduction of the Penny Post. He is sometimes credited with the design of the world's first postage stamp, the Penny Black.
In 1843, Cole introduced the world's first commercial Christmas card, commissioning artist John Callcott Horsley to make the artwork.
College English is an official publication of the American National Council of Teachers of English and is aimed at college-level teachers and scholars of English. The peer-reviewed journal publishes articles on a range of topics related to the teaching of English language arts at the college level, including literature, rhetoric, critical theory, and pedagogy. It sometimes publishes special issues devoted to specific themes. Its content is accessible electronically via ERIC, ProQuest, and JSTOR, and is indexed by the MLA.
College English began in 1939 when it was spun off from The English Journal. Its first editor was W. Wilbur Hatfield, who also edited The English Journal. He continued to edit both publications until 1955.
Since its founding in 1939, College English has had ten editors:
The College English Test (simplified Chinese: 大学英语考试; traditional Chinese: 大學英語考試; pinyin: Dàxué Yīngyǔ Kǎoshì), better known as CET, is a national English as a foreign language test in the People's Republic of China. The purpose of the CET is to examine the English proficiency of undergraduate students and postgraduate students in China and ensure that Chinese undergraduates and postgraduates reach the required English levels specified in the National College English Teaching Syllabuses (NCETS). This test has existed in China for 26 years and now has a huge test population of 18 million people annually.
Before the 2005 reform, the maximum score was 100 points. A test score higher than 85 is graded as "Excellent", and a test score higher than 60 but below 85 is graded as "Pass" in the certificate. This test was held nationally twice a year in summer and winter. The CET consisted of the non-English-specialized "Band 4" (CET4), in which certificate-holders have reached the English level of non-English major undergraduate students, and "Band 6" (CET6), in which the certificate-holders have reached the English level of non-English major postgraduates. The test included listening, reading and writing sections. The spoken test was optional.

China held the National College English Test last Saturday. This year's exam laid more emphasis on subjective questions rather than objective ones. The result was some very funny translations from Chinese into English. "GPS" for compass, "Pizza Yue" for moon cake. Translations such as these were quite common in this year's college English test. And once they were published on China's twitter like service Weibo, they were an instant hit. "I really don't know how to translate our traditional cultural concepts." College student said. "I'd rather answer objective questions because I can at least take chances." This year's test required students to translate a passage with 140 to 200 Chinese characters into English within 30 minutes. The passages dealt with Chinese history, culture and econ...

Fourth Sermon in our "Sacred Marriage" series based upon the book "Sacred Marriage" by Gary Thomas While at Baptist Bible College it was common to have conversations with a friend about some gal that had captured their heart and now they were considering asker her to marry them. My standard reply was to imagine falling into a dark bottomless pit and all the way down you could see the words flashing in neon "Forever Forever Forever" It was a not so subtle reference to the bottomless pit that Satan will be cast into one day. There would be an occasional chuckle, or nervous laugh, but the truth was in our minds that marriage was a serious undertaking that impacted the rest of your life. In 1870 a wife would be lucky if her husband lived past the time the youngest child left home. In 1911...

While teaching 10th grade English in South Central, Los Angeles (Watts), Beth realized that her students had the ability to reach their goals but lacked the resources to do so. Instead of Steinbeck and sentence structure, Beth dealt mostly with shame, anger, pregnancy, drug issues, dissolved families, and the repercussions of working at a school on the front lines of gang wars. However, Beth realized that when given an opportunity, her students were empowered to pull themselves out of their own circumstances. Beth ran a test model to prove her theory. She ran a marathon, raised $12,000 and sent seven of her students on out of school programs within their communities. Upon their return from these programs, all participating students had a fresh perspective on their capabilities to realize ...

JOURNEY 2010: LIVING IN THE WILL OF GOD This year I am calling Journey 2010. This is the year we journey closer to God as a church, as families, and as His children. In order to do this we must embrace God’s Truth, and allow His truth to change our want to’s into His want to’s. Our Journey 2010 is all about what John wrote in 2 John 1:4 – “living the life of truth, as the Father himself instructed us”. Walking in the truth, Living out the truth, following the way of truth, abiding in the truth. In the movie City Slickers, Billy Crystal plays a radio advertising salesman going through a mid-life crisis. He and his friends deal with the humdrumness of life by participating in a cattle drive from New Mexico to Colorado—an experience that turns out to be a kind of epiphany for all of them. ...
