The A4174 is a major road in England which runs around the northern and eastern edge of Bristol, mainly in South Gloucestershire, and through the southern suburbs of Bristol. When it was first conceived it was planned to circle the whole of Bristol, and is referred to as "the Bristol Ring Road" on road signs and by many local people, however this is technically inaccurate, as the road does not circle the whole city, instead covering roughly half of the route.

What are the HE Social Entrepreneurship Awards? The HE Social Entrepreneurship Awards programme from UnLtd and the Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE) provides financial and non-financial support across Higher Education Institutions (HEI's) in England to develop their expertise, skills, knowledge base and business support structures in social entrepreneurship and social enterprise activity. HEFCE promotes and funds high quality, cost-effective teaching and research, meeting the diverse needs of students, the economy and society. Who can apply? If you are a member of staff or student within a HEI supported by HEFCE and want support to develop entrepreneurial solutions to social problems that demonstrate a connection to the Higher Education sector, you can apply for one of over 200 awards available. For example, you could develop or build upon the curriculum or research of your HEI or offer an entrepreneurial solution to an issue within the community served by the HEI. As this scheme is intended to encourage social entrepreneurs from HEIs, it is required that one of your referees must be a responsible member of staff at the HEI where you study/work eg Head of department or Head of school. They will be contacted to cross-check that they fully endorse and support your project. Please note that the Awards are only open to HEFCE-funded institutions. RAE 2008 in Pain English Feat. Hugh Janus
RAE 2008 in Pain English Feat. Hugh Janus This is Bob and this is Mel and they're confused about RAE 2008, so for you Bob and Mel, this is RAE 2008 in pain English. Back in 2001 a bunch of clever folks at Hefce decided to weigh how much research was done by universities in the UK. They spent millions of pounds and they had so much fun that they decided to do it again in 2004. Except that they weren't competent enough to run it in 2004, so they put it off until 2008. By that time the costs had risen to over £45m - except that no-one really knows how much the whole thing costs, but at least Hefce had stopped universities wasting all that taxpayers money on things like curing cancer. The universities no longer had to provide information on how many of their staff were eligible in each subject area and how many they chose to exclude, so the whole exercise was meaningless. And then they published the results and no-one knew what they meant. But they enjoyed it so much, they decided never to do it again. And that's RAE 2008 in pain English. One year ago, the new Coalition government signalled its intention to take a radical look at the state of university finance in England. Great emphasis was given to the much-anticipated Browne Review, and many eagerly awaited the adoption of reforms which would enable the liberalisation of the higher education market and the lifting of the annual cap on university places. However, the government now finds itself facing a familiar impasse on cost and university places. Student fees have risen to an average of over £8000 and the deficit reduction programme has seen an 80% cut in the HEFCE teaching grant. However, much of the cost saving created by this reduction has been offset by the need for the government to meet the up-front costs of higher tuition fees. Consequently, a de facto cap on total student numbers will have to remain in place. Where should the government go next if it is to ensure that the reforms that have been introduced do not flounder on the same old obstacles? Shortly after the release of the government's long-awaited White Paper on Higher Education, Policy Exchange will convene a panel debate on the challenges facing our HE sector. Speeches will be followed by a panel discussion and questions from the floor. Speakers: CHAIR: Neil O'Brien - Director, Policy Exchange Elizabeth Truss MP - Member of Parliament for South West Norfolk Professor Malcolm Gillies - Vice-Chancellor, London Metropolitan University Dr Tim Leunig - Reader in Economic History, London ...

The national Dare to be Different conference, held at Firth Court at the University of Sheffield, was the culmination of a £1m programme delivered by UnLtd, the Foundation for Social Entrepreneurs, and HEFCE. The conference, which launched ground-breaking research into the impact of social entrepreneurship in Higher Education, highlighted the value that social entrepreneurship has in skilling up future generations to create employment prospects, with 75% of student social entrepreneurs believing they have increased their employability and leadership skills. The conference also put together recommendations for building on this momentum, increasing engagement and developing a valuable infrastructure within Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) which have proven to be an ideal breeding ground for establishing social ventures. The HE Social Entrepreneurship Recognition Awards were presented at the conference, highlighting the exceptional achievements and positive change, which HEIs, staff and students have made by creating a hotbed of entrepreneurial ideas and establishing social ventures. The Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE) is a non-departmental public body of the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills (previously the Department for Innovation, Universities and Skills) in the United Kingdom, which has been responsible for the distribution of funding to Universities and Colleges of Higher and Further Education in England since 1992.
History
It was created by the Further and Higher Education Act 1992, which also created the Further Education Funding Council for England (FEFC), and replaced in 2001 by the Learning and Skills Council.Scotland merged its further and higher education funding bodies in 2005.
Chief Executives
Structure
The organisation is organised into three directorates, each comprising policy and regional teams.
Management
The Chief Executive of HEFCE is Sir Alan Langlands (since 1 April 2009), previously Vice-Chancellor of the University of Dundee and former chief executive of the NHS. His predecessor, Professor David Eastwood is now the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Birmingham.
Function
In 2010-11 HEFCE will allocate £7.4 billion in public funds from the UK Government to universities and colleges in England to "support them in delivering high quality education, research and related activities". It only funds the institutions and does not give grants or loans to individual students. It also helps develop and implement higher education policy, based on research and consultation.
Industry-academia links
In addition to distributing both teaching and research funding to higher education institutions HEFCE is also involved with: widening participation; developing links between higher education institutions and business and the community; and enhancing leadership, governance and management within the sector. It provides both a contribution to core funding, and ring-fenced funding for special initiatives, projects and strategic aims.
Unistats
HEFCE also owns the Unistats website which contains the student satisfaction ratings for different universities and subjects. These satisfaction ratings are compiled from the National Student Survey, and the feedback from students is held within the Unistats website and allows students to compare subjects, universities and UCAS points, see satisfaction ratings from other students and see what the employment prospects are for graduate jobs by subject chosen.
Initiatives
HEFCE currently supports five teaching initiatives:
CETL
The Centres for Excellence in Teaching and Learning (CETL) initiative has two main aims: to reward excellent teaching practice, and to further invest in that practice so that CETLs funding delivers substantial benefits to students, teachers and institutions. There are currently 74 centres across the UK and the initiative represents HEFCE's largest ever single funding initiative in teaching and learning with the provision of £350 million over a five year period.
FDTL
A Fund for the Development of Teaching and Learning (FDTL) was established in 1995 with the intention of stimulating good teaching and learning practice in Higher Education. Assessment for fund eligibility is undertaken by a teaching quality assessment exercise, and over 164 projects have been given an award since 1995.
HEA
The Higher Education Academy, founded in May 2004, is funded by the UK HE Funding Councils (including HEFCE) and institutional subscriptions. It was established as the result of a merger of the Institute for Learning and Teaching in Higher Education (ILTHE), the Learning and Teaching Support Network (LTSN), and the TQEF National Co-ordination Team (NCT).
NTFS
HEFCE also funds a National Teaching Fellowship Scheme (NTFS) for those working in England and Northern Ireland. The initiative is administered by the Higher Education Academy and has two separate strands providing individual awards - recognising individual excellence in teaching within the Higher Education sector - and awards for large-scale projects typically undertaken by Higher Education institutions over periods of up to three years.
TLRP
HEFCE supports the Teaching and Learning Research Programme which aims to promote excellent educational research designed to enhance learning.
OLTF
The Online Learning Task Force aims to maintain and develop the position of UK higher education (HE) as a world leader in online learning. The task force was set up in summer 2009. It is chaired by Dame Lynne Brindley, Chief Executive of the British Library.
Location
HEFCE is based in Northavon House, on the outskirts of north Bristol on the campus of the University of the West of England, next to the exit to the A4174 ring road (for junction 1 of the M32). The nearest railway station is Filton Abbey Wood, next to the large Defence Equipment and Support building (also a government procurement agency). The building also houses the JISC, and the Office for Fair Access.
