Find out how Edward Thatch (or Edward Teach), better known as Blackbeard, became the most dreaded real-life pirate of the Caribbean.
Possibly born in Bristol in England around 1680, he may have served as a sailor or privateer during the War of Spanish Succession (known in America as Queen Anne's War) before turning to high seas larceny in the last 'Golden Age' of piracy.
Blackbeard's pirate career probably began in 1717 while serving as second-in-command to Captain Ben Hornigold, based in the pirate haven of Nassau in the Bahamas. Together they attacked and plundered merchant ships off the eastern seaboard of colonial America. Blackbeard later met 'gentleman pirate' Stede Bonnet, and took over command of his sloop, 'Revenge'. Blackbeard continued to terrorise the Thirteen Colonies, attacking ships bound for eastern seaports including Boston, New York, Philadelphia, the Chesapeake and Charleston.
Blackbeard then sailed to the Windward Islands, and near St.Vincent captured a French frigate, 'La Concorde', which had been converted into a slave ship. Some of the slaves joined Blackbeard's crew, the rest he put ashore. Blackbeard renamed the ship 'Queen Anne's Revenge' and fitted her with 40 guns, making her one of the most powerful ships in the area.
With 'Queen Anne's Revenge' at the head of his small pirate flotilla, Blackbeard attacked ships and settlements from Guadeloupe to the Gulf of Mexico. Spanish sailors nicknamed him 'the Great Devil', and he became the most notorious and feared pirate in the West Indies.
In 1718 Blackbeard sailed to the coast of Florida, where a Spanish treasure fleet had been wrecked three years before. Some pirates had made their fortune searching the wrecks for silver and gold, and Blackbeard's men spent several weeks diving the wrecks. But they had little success.
Next, in the most audacious move of his pirate career, Blackbeard, with four ships, blockaded the port of Charleston, capital of the British colony of South Carolina. For six days he stopped all ships entering or leaving the harbour, plundered them, and took their passengers and crew hostage to be ransomed back to the town.
Moving up the east coast of America looking for a hideaway, Blackbeard's flagship 'Queen Anne's Revenge' ran aground entering a shallow inlet, and sank. By now Blackbeard's crew was over-large and unruly, and some speculate that Blackbeard sank his ship on purpose, to disband his crew and increase his own share of the plunder they were carrying. Now he marooned the most discontent of his men (they were later rescued by Stede Bonnet) and sailed in a spare sloop to Bath with 60 of his best crew. At Bath, then capital of North Carolina, they accepted a royal pardon from the governor, as part of a general pirate amnesty that had been offered by the British government.
Blackbeard was not content with civilian life, and from his new base at Ocracoke Island in the Outer Banks, he soon returned to piracy, robbing two French ships out at sea. Alexander Spotswood, Lieutenant Governor of the neighbouring colony, Virginia, was outraged at the prospect of having the infamous, recidivist pirate Blackbeard operating on his doorstep. Although North Carolina was out of his jurisdiction, Spotswood organised a naval expedition to kill or capture Blackbeard. Led by Lieutenant Maynard, Royal Navy, the expedition caught Blackbeard by surprise at Ocracoke Island. In the viscous battle that followed, Blackbeard nearly prevailed, though outnumbered 3 to 1, but he was finally overpowered and killed.
Blackbears's career lasted less than two years, but created a legend that endures to this day. His story became the basis for countless pirate myths that remain popular around the world. But one of the most interesting facts about Blackbeard is usually ignored – there is no record of him torturing, murdering or behaving cruelly to any of his prisoners or crew. Instead, the real Blackbeard used terror to make his enemies surrender quickly, and violence only as a last resort.
N.B. There are no precise records of most of Blackbeard's voyages or attacks. Those depicted in this video are carefully researched but intended to give an accurate impression of his exploits, rather than a precise record of exact routes or attacks. Similarly, there are no accurate contemporary images of Queen Anne's Revenge, so artistic license has been taken with a ship of similar size and type.

Edward Teach (c. 1680 – 22 November 1718), better known as Blackbeard, was a notorious English pirate who operated around the West Indies and the eastern coast of the American colonies. Although little is known about his early life, he was probably born in Bristol, England. He may have been a sailor on privateer ships during Queen Anne's War before settling on the Caribbean island of New Providence, a base for Captain Benjamin Hornigold, whose crew Teach joined sometime around 1716. Hornigold placed him in command of a sloop he had captured, and the two engaged in numerous acts of piracy. Their numbers were boosted by the addition to their fleet of two more ships, one of which was commanded by Stede Bonnet, but toward the end of 1717 Hornigold retired from piracy, taking two vessels with him.
Teach captured a French merchant vessel, renamed her Queen Anne's Revenge, and equipped her with 40 guns. He became a renowned pirate, his cognomen derived from his thick black beard and fearsome appearance; he was reported to have tied lit fuses under his hat to frighten his enemies. He formed an alliance of pirates and blockaded the port of Charleston, South Carolina. After successfully ransoming its inhabitants, he ran Queen Anne's Revenge aground on a sandbar near Beaufort, North Carolina. He parted company with Bonnet, settling in Bath Town, where he accepted a royal pardon. But he was soon back at sea and attracted the attention of Alexander Spotswood, the Governor of Virginia. Spotswood arranged for a party of soldiers and sailors to try to capture the pirate, which they did on 22 November 1718. During a ferocious battle, Teach and several of his crew were killed by a small force of sailors led by Lieutenant Robert Maynard.

Alphonse Gabriel "Al" Capone (January 17, 1899 – January 25, 1947) was an American gangster who led a Prohibition-era crime syndicate. The Chicago Outfit, which subsequently became known as the "Capones", was dedicated to smuggling and bootlegging liquor, and other illegal activities such as prostitution, in Chicago from the early 1920s to 1931.
Born in the borough of Brooklyn in New York City to Italian immigrants, Capone became involved with gang activity at a young age after being expelled from school at age 14. In his early twenties, he moved to Chicago to take advantage of a new opportunity to make money smuggling illegal alcoholic beverages into the city during Prohibition. He also engaged in various other criminal activities, including bribery of government figures and prostitution. Despite his illegitimate occupation, Capone became a highly visible public figure. He made donations to various charitable endeavors using the money he made from his activities, and was viewed by many to be a "modern-day Robin Hood".

Plot: In 1412, a young girl called Jeanne is born in Domrémy, France. The times are hard: The Hunderd Years war with England has been going on since 1337, English knights and soldiers roam the country. When coming home with it, she finds the English leveling her home town. Years after that, in 1428, she knows her mission is to be ridding France of the English and so sets out to meet Charles, the Dauphin. In his desperate military situation, he welcomes all help and gives the maiden a chance to prove her divine mission. After the successful liberation of Orléans and Reims, the Dauphin can be crowned traditionally in the cathedral of Reims - and does not need her anymore, since his wishes are satisfied. Jeanne d'Arc gets set up in his trap and is imprisoned by the Burgundians. In a trial against her under English law, she can't be forced to tell about her divine visions she has had continuously since childhood. Being condemned of witchcraft and being considered as relapsed heretic, she is sentenced to death. Jeanne d'Arc is burnt alive in the marketplace of Rouen on May 30th, 1431, at only 19 years of age.

Find out how Edward Thatch (or Edward Teach), better known as Blackbeard, became the most dreaded real-life pirate of the Caribbean.
Possibly born in Bristol in England around 1680, he may have served as a sailor or privateer during the War of Spanish Succession (known in America as Queen Anne's War) before turning to high seas larceny in the last 'Golden Age' of piracy.
Blackbeard's pirate career probably began in 1717 while serving as second-in-command to Captain Ben Hornigold, based in the pirate haven of Nassau in the Bahamas. Together they attacked and plundered merchant ships off the eastern seaboard of colonial America. Blackbeard later met 'gentleman pirate' Stede Bonnet, and took over command of his sloop, 'Revenge'. Blackbeard continued to terrorise the Thirteen Colonies, attacking ships bound for eastern seaports including Boston, New York, Philadelphia, the Chesapeake and Charleston.
Blackbeard then sailed to the Windward Islands, and near St.Vincent captured a French frigate, 'La Concorde', which had been converted into a slave ship. Some of the slaves joined Blackbeard's crew, the rest he put ashore. Blackbeard renamed the ship 'Queen Anne's Revenge' and fitted her with 40 guns, making her one of the most powerful ships in the area.
With 'Queen Anne's Revenge' at the head of his small pirate flotilla, Blackbeard attacked ships and settlements from Guadeloupe to the Gulf of Mexico. Spanish sailors nicknamed him 'the Great Devil', and he became the most notorious and feared pirate in the West Indies.
In 1718 Blackbeard sailed to the coast of Florida, where a Spanish treasure fleet had been wrecked three years before. Some pirates had made their fortune searching the wrecks for silver and gold, and Blackbeard's men spent several weeks diving the wrecks. But they had little success.
Next, in the most audacious move of his pirate career, Blackbeard, with four ships, blockaded the port of Charleston, capital of the British colony of South Carolina. For six days he stopped all ships entering or leaving the harbour, plundered them, and took their passengers and crew hostage to be ransomed back to the town.
Moving up the east coast of America looking for a hideaway, Blackbeard's flagship 'Queen Anne's Revenge' ran aground entering a shallow inlet, and sank. By now Blackbeard's crew was over-large and unruly, and some speculate that Blackbeard sank his ship on purpose, to disband his crew and increase his own share of the plunder they were carrying. Now he marooned the most discontent of his men (they were later rescued by Stede Bonnet) and sailed in a spare sloop to Bath with 60 of his best crew. At Bath, then capital of North Carolina, they accepted a royal pardon from the governor, as part of a general pirate amnesty that had been offered by the British government.
Blackbeard was not content with civilian life, and from his new base at Ocracoke Island in the Outer Banks, he soon returned to piracy, robbing two French ships out at sea. Alexander Spotswood, Lieutenant Governor of the neighbouring colony, Virginia, was outraged at the prospect of having the infamous, recidivist pirate Blackbeard operating on his doorstep. Although North Carolina was out of his jurisdiction, Spotswood organised a naval expedition to kill or capture Blackbeard. Led by Lieutenant Maynard, Royal Navy, the expedition caught Blackbeard by surprise at Ocracoke Island. In the viscous battle that followed, Blackbeard nearly prevailed, though outnumbered 3 to 1, but he was finally overpowered and killed.
Blackbears's career lasted less than two years, but created a legend that endures to this day. His story became the basis for countless pirate myths that remain popular around the world. But one of the most interesting facts about Blackbeard is usually ignored – there is no record of him torturing, murdering or behaving cruelly to any of his prisoners or crew. Instead, the real Blackbeard used terror to make his enemies surrender quickly, and violence only as a last resort.
N.B. There are no precise records of most of Blackbeard's voyages or attacks. Those depicted in this video are carefully researched but intended to give an accurate impression of his exploits, rather than a precise record of exact routes or attacks. Similarly, there are no accurate contemporary images of Queen Anne's Revenge, so artistic license has been taken with a ship of similar size and type.

Blackbeard is a musical theme composed by Hans Zimmer
for Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides. It
appeared as a track on the film's soundtrack.
The three new themes for Blackbeard and the Queen
Anne's Revenge, as they are heard in "Blackbeard"
The track consists of almost entirely new music, split
into three parts. The first is an exposition of his new
themes, followed by an action variation of the Queen
Anne's Revenge. The second is a jolly skipping arpeggio
on the bass instruments with hints of the opening of
"On Stranger Tides" suite, followed tragic re-
orchestration of Blackbeard's theme for his demise. The
final section is another variation of the Queen Anne's
Revenge theme before restating the three note
descending figure from the end of "A Family Affair".
The track can be split into three "strains". The first
strain begins with a descending chromatic passage while
the chords alternate between I and V diminished (this
is technically a very minor motif for the character,
and is heard again in the track "Ignorance Is Bliss "
from the expended score). There is then a six note
pedal figure which is a minor motif for Blackbeard and
the Queen Anne's Revenge. The track then moves into
Blackbeard's main theme, which is stated three times,
accompanied with syncopated chords in the bass. This is
followed by a return of the six note figure, repeated
four times (each with the third of the chord missing,
giving it a medieval sound). The strain is ended with
two repeats of the Queen Anne's Revenge theme,
underscored with two sets of sixthlets per bar, and
then a final loud statement of the six note figure.
The second strain begins with skipping cello arpeggios,
with subtle hints of "On Stranger Tides". There are
then several incomplete renditions of Blackbeard's
theme, modulating through various different keys.
The third and final strain features a driving ostinato
rhythm in the bass, alternating between D and Ab, and
overlayed by a variation on the Queen Anne's Revenge
theme, and finishes with a solemn statements of the
final seconds of "A Family Affair".
The first strain marks Blackbeard's first appearance in
On Stranger Tides. The powerful statement of the Queen
Anne's Revenge theme can be heard when Blackbeard hangs
the mutineers. The second strain plays during
Blackbeard's death, where he realizes he has been
tricked into sacrificing himself before being consumed
by the Fountain. The the third strain accompanies the
Cook's punishment by the Greek fire cannons.
The track appears to be arranged in concert suite
format (similar to "The Kraken"), however it is
actually a compilation of music from three scenes from
the film.
The music is not in chronological order; the third
strain should be in between the first and the second.
The official piano transcription is slightly different
to the version heard on the soundtrack.
The version on the demo score features the three
strains as separate tracks: "Blackbeard", "Blackbeard's
Demise" and "Fry The Cook", respectively.
"Blackbeard" was one of the few tracks to use
synthesizers, as Zimmer wanted a more "organic" feel
