Ghost Village - Jazirat Al Hamra Ras Al Khaimah - UAE
azirat Al Hamra (Red Island) is a coastal village in Ras Al Khaimah (UAE), believed to be occupied since 16th century and abandoned nearly 40 years ago before the discovery of oil and gas in the region. This abandoned village is of a great interest to archaeologist, occasional tourists and photographers.
The villagers who lived here, were mainly into fishing and pearl trading. The exact reason for abandoning the village is still unknown. It is believed that the villagers were asked by the ruler to vacate the place soon, while some others say that the villagers left for better comfort to modern villas and houses few kilometers away. But I was surprised, I don't believe it, there are rumors that this place is haunted and this is why its sometimes called 'Ghost Village'. Personally, I couldn't find any evidence for that.

Ras al-Khaimah (Arabic: رأس الخيمة Rā's al Ḫaima, English: The Top of the Tent) is one of the emirates of the United Arab Emirates (UAE), in the east of the Persian Gulf. It is in the northern part of the UAE bordering Oman's exclave. The emirate of Ras Al Khaimah covers an area of 1,700 square km. The capital city and home of most residents is also called Ras al-Khaimah. The city has a population of 263,217 as of 2008. The city has two main sections, Old Ras Al Khaimah and Nakheel, on either side of a creek. It is served by the Ras Al Khaimah International Airport. Apart from the northern part where the city of Ras Al Khaimah is situated, it also has one large enclave in the South near Hatta, and a few small islands on the Persian Gulf.

Ras Al Khaimah has been the site of human habitation for several millennia and there are many historical and archaeological sites throughout the emirate dating from different time periods, including remnants of the Umm Al Nar Civilisation (3rd Millennium BC).

His Highness Sheikh Saud Bin Saqr al Qasimi (born Dubai, February 10, 1956) was appointed Supreme Council member and new Ruler of Ras al-Khaimah in the United Arab Emirates on October 27, 2010. Sheikh Saud is the fourth son of Sheikh Saqr bin Mohammad al-Qassimi, his predecessor as UAE Supreme Council Member and previous Ruler of Ras Al Khaimah, who died October 27, 2010. The UAE Federal Supreme Council congratulated His Highness Shaikh Saud bin Saqr Al Qasimi on succeeding his father, after the Emirates Supreme Council endorsed his rule.
Despite potential controversy, Yousef Obaid al-Nuaimi of the UAE's Federal National Council, assured a seamless transition: "The country's leadership supported this transfer (of power) which took place smoothly. There are no problems. People are preparing for the funeral," he said.
Sheikh Saud completed both his primary and secondary education in Ras Al Khaimah and then attended the American University of Beirut (AUB) in July 1973 to pursue studies in economics. When civil war broke out in Lebanon in 1975, Sheikh Saud transferred to the University of Michigan, where he completed his bachelor's degree in Economics and Political Science, where he went on to obtain a Master's degree.
