Woman challenging 'triple talaq' says she was forced to undergo abortion 6 times
Shayara Bano alleged that she was forcibly given pills by her husband that affected her health.
A 37-year-old woman who has filed the petition challenging the constitutionality of Muslim practices of polygamy, triple talaq (talaq-e-bidat) has alleged that she was forced to undergo six abortions by her husband and had to approach the Supreme Court as she could no longer bear the ordeal.
Speaking to a leading daily, Shayara Bano, said that she was forcibly given pills by her husband, which severely affected her health. A post graduate in sociology from Kashipur in Udham Singh Nagar district, Bano is a mother of two - a 13-year-old son and an 11-year-old daughter - who are still with her husband.
Bano had to take a legal course to get triple talaq or talaq-e- bidat declared illegal, after her husband Rizwan Ahmed posted a 'talaqnama' to her in October last year.
Meanwhile, the All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB) has alleged that attempts are being made to 'interfere' in Shariat laws through courts and appealed to the central government to maintain its earlier stand on the matter.
AIMPLB member Zafar Jinali, after the board meeting, alleged court 'interference' in Muslim Personal Law (Shariat) Application Act.
His remarks came weeks after the Supreme Court sought the Centre's response in a plea challenging the constitutionality of Muslim practices of polygamy, triple talaq (talaq-e-bidat) and nikah halala.
