John Abercrombie plays "Where are you" on his Soulezza Signature Guitar
Guitarist John Abercrombie combines bop and free jazz stylistic elements with electronics utilizing phase shifters, guitar synthesizers and the good old volume pedal. What has kept his playing fresh is his refusal to be chained to these digital devices. Saxophonist, composer, producer and educator Greg Osby has made an indelible mark on contemporary jazz as a leader of his own ensembles and as a guest artist with other acclaimed jazz groups for the past 20 years. Highly regarded for his insightful and innovative approach to composition and performance, Osby is a shining beacon among the current generation of jazz musicians.
Welcome to this special edition of The Pace Report reporting from this year's 2016 Detroit Jazz Festival. Guitarist and composer John Abercrombie celebrates the anniversary of his debut ECM Records release of "Timeless" this month. The album was a monumental feat for John as it introduced the world to him and his compositions. "Timeless" featured Jack DeJohnette on drums and Jan Hammer on keys and was produced by ECM Records founder Manfred Eicher. In a career spanning some 50 decades, John has recorded and played with the likes of Dave Liebman, Gato Barbieri, Dave Holland, Charles Lloyd, Michael Brecker, Joe Lovano, Gil Evans, and Kenny Wheeler. I had a chance to sit down with John briefly after his set in Detroit to talk about recording his debut record, how that record shaped his so...

Jazz guitarist John Abercrombie's career has been a pendulum of successes of having playing all styles of jazz music. During the late 1960's into the early 1970's, John played fusion-rock in the group Dreams featuring Randy and Michael Brecker, Billy Cobham, and Don Grolnick. In the group Gateway he paired up with bassist Dave Holland and drummer Jack DeJohnette. John has also collaborated with guitarist Ralph Towner as a duo. His latest ECM Records release "Within A Song" again has him collaborating with saxophonist Joe Lovano, Drew Gress on bass, and Joey Baron on drums. The recording was based on John's major musical influence, NEA Jazz Master and guitarist, Jim Hall. Hall's collaboration on recording's "Interplay" with pianist Bill Evans and Sonny Rollins's "The Bridge" set the standa...
