Garland plays some NES
This is a collection of short clips from 12 NES games. Most of them are games I played as a kid, while others are games I checked out later when I found out about emulators. There's also one I just had to try out of curiosity.
0:00 - Kid Icarus
One of my favorite NES games and probably the NES game I've played through the most times. The only complaint I have about this game is that I wish it was longer. There are only three side scrolling levels and six climbing levels. I wish there were at least three more side scrolling ones.
2:30 - Holy Diver
This actually isn't a NES game. It was only released in Japan and is therefore a Famicom game only. It's a great game, but goddamn hard. I've never been able to beat it without save states, but I'll get to it some day. It's obviously i...

This is a collection of short clips from 12 NES games. Most of them are games I played as a kid, while others are games I checked out later when I found out about emulators. There's also one I just had to try out of curiosity.

It's obviously inspired by Castlevania and I guess some of you know where the title comes from.
5:51 - Yoshi
This was the other game I bought along with my NES and Super Mario Bros in 1994. I had no idea it would be a puzzle game, but it turned out to be quite fun. Not something I play for a very long time, though.
8:25 - Fester's Quest
A fun game, but it doesn't come without flaws. First of all, the enemies take too much damage and the gun doesn't auto fire, so this game should be played with a turbo controller if you don't want to ruin your thumb. Yes, in this video, I'm actually cheating for real, and I couldn't possibly feel bad about it. It feels more like fixing a flaw. And then there's the issue of the gun fire being blocked by anything, and make sure not to have the second black gun when facing the green frogs in the sewers, as the "bullets" will only go around them. I played this many times as a kid, but I never reached the first boss.
13:17 - Adventures in the Magic Kingdom
A fun, but very short game. There are only five stages. Two are side scrollers, while the others are different types of racing games
15:13 - Title not guessed yet.
It's another fun puzzle game and the only game here not licensed by Nintendo. The only flaw I can think of is the slowness of the character. It can really be boring when you need to walk a lot. Playing it on an emulator at double speed is much more fun. Oh, and the music is kinda annoying in the first world, but it gets much better later.
19:00 - The Flintstones
Another fun side scroller. I played this a lot as a kid, but never beat it. I only reached the final boss once and lost. I also failed a little at the first boss in this video. Not much else to say.
20:41 - Final Fantasy III
Another Famicom game, as this game has yet to be released in its original format outside of Japan. I have also yet to beat it. I started playing it many years ago, but the "copy" I had was fucked up. After a while, all the text turned to gibberish, so I couldn't finish it without missing out on the story. I had fun playing it up to that point, but didn't feel like starting over at that time. I can easily say it's the best 8 bit Final Fantasy, though. They finally fixed the problem of targeting dead enemies in this game. This video also shows the infamous level up glitch. If you gain more than one level in a battle, you will only level up once and then need almost a million EXP to reach the next level.
24:14 - Doki Doki Panic
Another Famicom game that was never released outside Japan. However, as most of you probably know, a slightly altered version of the game was released in the rest of the world as Super Mario Bros. 2, which is the game I played and beat many times as a kid. I didn't played the original until many years later, as I honestly didn't know it existed. One thing that annoys me in this version is that you cannot run, but otherwise, it's mostly the same game. And a pretty damn good one.
26:30 - Tiny Toons Adventures
A fun platformer that I beat many times as a kid. Running can be very dangerous in this game, as you bounce all over the place. I mean, just look how far and high you can jump. That's kinda over the top, but otherwise, there's not really anything negative to say about this game.
29:47 - No one knows this game?
When I realized the video would be mostly dominated by side scrollers and platformers, I decided to include this one for a little variety. I played this a little as a kid, but it's not really that fun.
32:31 - Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde
Infamous for being one of the worst games ever, I just had to check it out. And yes, it's bad. Especially when you play as Dr. Jekyll. The weapon does nothing and the bombs are impossible to dodge. It gets a little better when you play as Mr. Hyde, but then you die if you get any further than you got as Dr. Jekyll. The goal is to turn into Dr. Jekyll again by collecting coins, but I can never get far enough with Dr. Jekyll to be able to play long enough as Mr. Hyde to get enough coins to turn back Dr. Jekyll... I probably suck at it, but why would I spend time getting good at a game that sucks?
