Aqaba (English pronunciation: /ˈækəbə/; alternatively spelled Akaba; Arabic: العقبة), is the only coastal city of Jordan, with an estimated population of 140,000 and a land area of 375 square kilometres (144.8 sq mi). The city's strategic location at the northeastern tip of the Red Sea, has made its port important over the course of thousands of years. As Ancient Aela, the former bishopric remains a Latin Catholic titular see. Today, the port plays a primary role in the kingdom's economy, it also serves several countries in the region.
The city of Aqaba is the capital of Aqaba Governorate, it is also the largest city in the Gulf of Aqaba. Aqaba's location next to Wadi Rum and Petra has placed it in Jordan's golden triangle of tourism, which strengthened the city's location on the world map and made it one of the major tourist attractions in Jordan. It is known today as a liberal Arab city with its warm calm waters that made its marine life boom. It has taken large share of Jordan's mega projects, project like Ayla Oasis, Saraya Aqaba, Marsa Zayed and The Red Sea Astrarium. They are expected to turn the city into a major tourism hub in the region. However, industrial and commercial activities remain important, due to the strategic location of the city as the country's only seaport.
The Red Sea (also the Erythraean Sea) is a seawater inlet of the Indian Ocean, lying between Africa and Asia. The connection to the ocean is in the south through the Bab el Mandeb strait and the Gulf of Aden. In the north, there is the Sinai Peninsula, the Gulf of Aqaba, and the Gulf of Suez (leading to the Suez Canal). The Red Sea is a Global 200 ecoregion. The sea is underlain by the Red Sea Rift which is part of the Great Rift Valley.
The Red Sea has a surface area of roughly 438,000 km2 (169,100 mi2). It is about 2250 km (1398 mi) long and, at its widest point, 355 km (220.6 mi) wide. It has a maximum depth of 2211 m (7254 ft) in the central median trench, and an average depth of 490 m (1,608 ft). However, there are also extensive shallow shelves, noted for their marine life and corals. The sea is the habitat of over 1,000 invertebrate species, and 200 soft and hard corals. It is the world's northernmost tropical sea.
The International Hydrographic Organization defines the limits of the Red Sea as follows:
Jordan (/ˈdʒɔːrdən/; Arabic: الأردن Al-Urdun), officially the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan (Arabic: المملكة الأردنية الهاشمية Al-Mamlakah Al-Urduniyah Al-Hashimiyah), is an Arab kingdom in Western Asia, on the East Bank of the Jordan River. Jordan is bordered by Saudi Arabia to the east and south, Iraq to the north-east, Syria to the north, and Israel and Palestine to the west. Since the dawn of civilization, the country's location at the crossroads of the Middle East has served as a strategic nexus connecting Asia, Africa and Europe.
Archaeologists found evidence on inhabitance dating as far back as the Paleolithic period. Three kingdoms emerged on the territory of modern Jordan at the very end of the Bronze Age: Ammon, Moab and Edom. The lands were later part of several kingdoms and empires, most notably the Nabatean Kingdom, the Roman Empire and finally the Ottoman Empire from the 16th until the early 20th century. After the Partitioning of the Ottoman Empire after World war I by Britain and France, the Emirate of Transjordan was officially recognized by the Council of the League of Nations in 1922. In 1946, Jordan became an independent sovereign state officially known as The Hashemite Kingdom of Transjordan. The capture of the West Bank by Jordan during the 1948 Arab–Israeli War has showed that the Arab Legion forces known today as the Jordanian Armed Forces were the most effective among the Arab troops involved in the war. The same year, Abdullah I took the title King of Jordan. The name of the state was changed to The Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan on 1 December 1948.
Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan (Arabic: زايد بن سلطان آل نهيان ; 6 May 1918 – 2 November 2004) was the principal driving force behind the formation of the United Arab Emirates (UAE), the Emîr (أمير) (Ruler) of Abu Dhabi and first Ra’îs (رئيس) President of the United Arab Emirates, a post which he held for the lengthy period of over 33 years (1971–2004).
Although the exact date of his birth is unknown, officially on some of the documents, Sheikh Zayed was born on 6 May 1918 in Abu Dhabi. He was the youngest son of Sheikh Sultan bin Zayed bin Khalifah Al Nahyan. His birth date is also reported to be 1916. His father was the ruler of Abu Dhabi from 1922 until his assassination in 1926. Zayed was named after his grandfather, Sheikh Zayed bin Khalifa Al Nahyan ("Zayed the Great"), who ruled the emirate from 1855 to 1909. At the time of Zayed's birth, the sheikhdom of Abu Dhabi was one of seven Trucial States along the coast of the lower coast of the Persian Gulf.

I was so looking forward to arriving in Jordan. The change to the middle east was something I really needed. I love the Jordanian Hospitality, and we were awarded it in droves once we arrived in Aqaba. The city of Aqaba is a port city and an economic free zone along the Red Sea of Jordan. It's absolutely beautiful and now that Turkish Airlines has direct flights from Istanbul, Turkey, it makes it easy to get to. There's enough to keep people occupied in Aqaba Jordan for weeks. Beside the beaches at places like Berenice Beach Club, there is also scuba diving in the Red Sea, ATVing in the desert, and loads of other amazing things to do in Aqaba. Honestly, I'm dying to get back to this city. For my travel photography and article, check out my blog http://www.brendansadventures.com

Overlooking the Gulf of Aqaba along the Red Sea, the Sheikh Zayed Masjid is the first completed component of the mega mixed-use Marsa Zayed project, which is set to transform Aqaba into a vibrant, bustling center of tourism, commerce and living. The mosque rests on the northern edge of Marsa Zayed, accommodating up to 3,000 worshippers and embodying the image and identity of its architectural inspiration, the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque in Abu Dhabi. With lush landscape designs and a wealth of ornate, intricate design elements, the Sheikh Zayed Masjid is an architectural jewel for the city of Aqaba. A Travel Guide to Jordan Jordan is an extraordinary country. Although small in size and young in terms of nation state, it is blessed with some of the regions most revered historical treasures, some of its most spectacular scenery and some of its kindest and most hospitable people. It has a delicious cuisine, a good tourist infrastructure – with some great accommodation and knowledgeable guides – and under the much respected royal family, a stable government. Throughout its short history, Jordan has bucked the trends of its neighbours; by welcoming the foreign traveller with open arms, and gallons of sweet mint tea, in many ways it continues to do so. Amman is a lively, liberal city, modern in character, yet with one foot rooted firmly in the past. With a history dating back to Neolithic...

Travel video about destination Wadi Rum in Jordan. Around fifty kilometres from the Jordanian city of Aqaba is one of the most fascinating desert landscapes in the world, the Wadi Rum. Despite its desolate terrain and hostile environment the region was first inhabited several thousand years ago. The beauty of the mountains has inspired several authors the most famous of whom was Englishman, Thomas Edward Lawrence. At the beginning of the twentieth century, Lawrence Of Arabia, as he became known, visited the Wadi Rum on several occasions. It is no coincidence that one of the region's magnificent rock formations bears the same name as that given by Lawrence to his famous autobiography, The Seven Pillars Of Wisdom. One of the most popular destinations in this region and also one of the most...

Jordan is a peaceful oasis in the turmoil of the Middle East. As one of the cradles of human civilization and a part of the Holy Land, Jordan has such invaluable monuments as the Roman city of Jerash, or the mystical capital of the Nabateans, the marvellous Petra, the city carved from red stone. Moses also lies here, but apart from that, one cannot forget the mosaics of Madaba, the national park of Dana, the hot waterfalls of Wadi Zarka and the 70 kilometers long coast of the Dead Sea. The capital, Amman, and Aqaba, which lies on the coast of the Mediterranean See, are real eastern cities with their mosques and bazaars, while the Wadi Rum with is wonderful stone arches and the Red Desert offer the tourists different kinds of experience from off road jeep tours to camel trips and Bedouin ca...

Diving in Aqaba, Jordan. Rainbow Reef, Cedar Pride Wreck, New Canyon and The Tank. First time I've tried recording underwater, using a Sony HDR-AS15. Very disappointed with the clarity of the camera/lense. First time I've seen someone blow rings underwater. I need to learn that. This was my deepest dive yet: 35m. The 20C+ water temp was very comfortable after diving in 11C Monterey California the month before. I can highly recommend Mr Frogman Dive Center in Aqaba with their capable and friendly guides. http://www.mrfrogman.com/
