The City of Makati (/məˈkɑːtɪ/ mə-KAH-tee; Filipino: Makati), in the Philippines, is one of the 17 cities that make up Metro Manila, one of the most populous metropolitan areas in the world. Makati is the financial center of the Philippines. As the host of various embassies, it is also an important center for international affairs.
With a population of 510,383, Makati is the 16th largest city in the country and ranked as the 44th most densely populated city in the world with 18,654 inhabitants per km2.
Makati was founded by Spaniard Miguel López de Legazpi, who dismissed Makati as a worthless swamp. According to folklore, Legazpi asked for the name of the place but, because of the language barrier, was misinterpreted by the natives. Pointing to the receding tide of Pasig River, the natives answered, “Makati, kumakati na,” literally meaning ebbing tide.
Makati became the financial center of the Philippines during the 1950s. Makati is home of the Philippine Stock Exchange and the Makati Business Club.

Power Plant Mall was established in 2000 as a comfort and convenience offered to Rockwell Center’s residents, with only a dozen of stores upon launch, marking Rockwell’s first retail milestone - the creation of “Fashionable Manila.” Today, Power Plant has expanded to over a hundred stores, catering to the needs and wants of various individuals, both residents and guests, who have come to regard the mall as their second home.

Power Plant Mall has 4 levels of shopping and dining including the lower ground level. The Power Plant Mall has an avenue of stalls that sell vintage apparel and accessories, locally designed swimsuits, bags, hand painted bangles and shelves of shoes.
The mall also provides booklovers their sanctuary, with book shops such as Power Books and National Bookstore.
Shopping at the Power Plant is a lot calmer and less hectic than in other malls as it is less accessible to the general public.
Aside from shopping, Power Plant also has its share of bars and restaurants including Draft Gastropub, Mamu, Celadon, Ganso Shabuway, Via Mare, Barcino’s, Ikkoryu Fukuoka Ramen, 8 Cuts Burger Blends and much more.

When leaving Ninoy Aquino International Airport, we suggest taking a yellow metered taxi. The white coupon taxis were charging exorbitant prices. For example, a white coupon taxi driver told us it would cost 550 pesos to get to Makati even though their huge fare charge quoted a price of 350. Riding the yellow metered taxi, we paid less than 300 pesos!
We pre-booked our three-night stay at Prince Plaza II through Agoda. Our first room looked nothing like the photos on Agoda. When we asked reception about the discrepancy, they told us that only some of the rooms had been remodeled. We later moved to a remodeled room, which was more comfortable. The location is the saving grace of this property; it's right in the heart of Makati, a bustling business district.
On day one, we went to Greenbelt and Green Hills Shopping Center. Greenbelt is literally right next door to Prince Plaza II. It's an upscale complex consisting of five connected shopping centers. It's filled with great restaurants. We highly recommend the fruit shakes at Maman and the brunch and desserts at Bizu Patisserie!
Green Hills looked and felt like an indoor market. While Greenbelt was upscale, Green Hills seemed to be the place to go for good deals. Tim scored a new dry bag there!
We had hoped to do something outdoors on our second day in Manila, but the rain kept us inside. We spent the ENTIRE day in Mega Mall! Of the three malls we visited, Mega Mall was our favorite. In addition to clothing stores, restaurants and a cinema, it also has a bowling alley, ice skating rink, hair salons, art galleries and more! It was truly MEGA.

Philippines has a gun culture and shooting sports are popular, and accepted like any other sports activity.
I tried the Armscor MAPP1 9mm (aka Tanfoglio Force or CZ 75 copy), and Armcor 1911 in .40 S&W;.
The Armscor range and gun hire prices at the time were PHP1500 each firearm. Comes with paper targets, eye, and ear protection, and you are supervised by a range and safety officer. Pistols came with 50 rounds of factory lead reloads, pump action shotguns came with 12 rounds. I did not try the shotgun. This was actually a well priced and modern indoor range at the time, with good customer service and helpful staff. Other ranges I investigated were more expensive, and had lower standards.
Regarding the street people in Makati Manila, I bought many of them rice and stir fry dinners and clean drinking water. I interviewed a few of them off camera and they all confirmed they had come to that area for the holiday and tourist season to try beg for money from foreigners. They were there by choice, and went back to their provinces after new years.
Travel Tips:
Everyone spoke English and generally very friendly.
Its important to have photo ID for flights, hotels, and if police ask.
Its common for taxi drivers in Manila to try rip you off. Ask them nicely to put the meter on, or negotiate the price from the start if you know what it costs to your location. Otherwise find another taxi!
Shopping mall culture, locals love the mall for the aircon and to get out of the heat.
Locals often inflate prices for foreigners and tourists. Haggle and negotiate nicely. Be tough, but be respectful and polite about it. Shop around, you can often get a better price.
"Tip" can also mean bribe, so don't be afraid to ask what you're paying for upfront. Locals often do things to try help you, but then expect a tip.
The average basic worker earns PHP 300 a day. So tipping PHP 20 - 50 is fine.

Everyone spoke English and generally very friendly.
It is important to have photo ID for flights, hotels, and if police ask.
It is common for taxi drivers in Manila and every other city to try rip you off, or overcharge foreigners. Ask them nicely to put the meter on, or negotiate the price from the start. Ask locals what it costs to your location. If you are not comfortable, don't use that taxi. Don't be afraid to move on and find another taxi!
Shopping mall culture, locals love the mall for the aircon and to get out of the heat.
Generally you will notice ash and dust particles in the air as burning trash and charcoal BBQ cooking is quite common. Also if there is a lot of vehicle traffic in that city from Jeepney buses, motorbikes, trucks and cars.
Locals often inflate prices for foreigners and tourists. Haggle and negotiate nicely. Be firm and confident, but always be respectful and polite. Shop around, you can often get a better price. Ask around about local fair pricing for things you want to do.
"Tip" can also mean bribe, so don't be afraid to ask what you're paying for upfront. Locals often do things to try help you, but then expect a tip.
The average basic worker earns PHP200 - 300 a day. So tipping PHP 20 - 50 is fine.
Some people may be interested in retiring in Philippines to live their dreams. I highly recommend you visit first, and explore the areas you are interested in. Take a few weeks or months to see if you like it and can fit in. I know successful expats who stayed and have a happy life, and others who left Philippines after a few years. Living in a city long term is not the same as a short vacation. So you will have to get use to local standards. A local standard of living cost can be very affordable, depending on your lifestyle. But a high Western standard like living in America or Australia would cost the same or more than living back home in USA or AU. I've seen other party goers living beyond their means and they get into trouble or run out of money real quick.

I am at McCarthy Avenue at the heart of a huge business district in metro Manilla. This is where Ayala Museum is located, a private collection that provides a glimpse of Philippine art and history. The museum opened in 1974 and was the brainchild of artist Fernando Zobel. I am here with Ms. Nita Samson, a curator at the Ayala Museum.
Ms. Samson, what is unique about this museum? What makes Ayala Museum unique is that it is both a history and an art museum. Our historical dioramas and boat gallery are proven crowd drawers.
The main attraction here is a diorama of Philippine history created by artists from Paete, Laguna. Another popular attraction is the boat gallery that showcases maritime trade and colonial economy. As we go up the third and fourth levels, pioneers of Philippine art Juan Luna, Fernando Amorsolo, and Fernando Zobel are showcased.
You can buy souvenirs here at the museum shop and every purchase you make helps support the educational programs of the museum. When you visit here, allot two hours to explore the whole museum. Philippines has a gun culture and shooting sports are popular, and accepted like any other sports activity.
I tried the Armscor MAPP1 MS 9mm (aka Tanfoglio Force or CZ 75 copy), and Armcor 1911 in .45 ACP.
The Armscor range and gun hire prices at the time were PHP1500 each firearm. Comes with paper targets, eye, and ear protection, and you are supervised by a range and safety officer. Pistols came with 50 rounds of factory lead reloads, pump action shotguns came with 12 rounds. I did not try the shotgun. This was actually a well priced and modern indoor range at the time, with good customer service and helpful staff. Other ranges I investigated were more expensive, and had lower standards.
Regarding the street people in Makati Manila, I bought many of them rice and stir fry dinners and bottled water. I interviewed a few of them off camera and they all confirmed they had come to that area for the holiday and tourist season to try beg for money from foreigners. They were there by choice, and went back to their provinces after new years.

My strategy recommendation to buy the Russian rouble against the US dollar at 78 was vindicated as it surged to 65 last week. However, I believe the rouble is now overvalued at 65 relative to both fundamentals and macro risks. Brent has fallen eight per cent from its high of 48 ... Corporate profits, manufacturing PMI and business investment are all awful ... After all, the Makati Business Club once helped to oust both Marcos and Estrada!. ....
