The London Evening Standard (simply the Evening Standard before May 2009) is a local, free daily newspaper, published Monday to Friday in tabloid format in London.
It is the dominant local/regional evening paper for London and the surrounding area, with coverage of national and international news and City of London finance. In October 2009, the paper ended a 180-year history of paid circulation and became a free newspaper, doubling its circulation as part of a change in its business plan.
The newspaper was founded by barrister Stanley Lees Giffard on 21 May 1827, as the Standard. The early owner of the paper was Charles Baldwin. Under the ownership of James Johnstone, The Standard became a morning paper from 29 June 1857. The Evening Standard was published from 11 June 1859. The Standard gained eminence for its detailed foreign news, notably its reporting of events of the American Civil War (1861–1865), the Austro-Prussian War of 1866, and the Franco-Prussian War of 1870, all contributing to a rise in circulation. By the end of the 19th century, the evening edition eclipsed its morning counterpart, which folded.

The Evening Standard Theatre Awards, established in 1955, are presented annually for outstanding achievements in London Theatre. Sponsored by the Evening Standard newspaper, they are announced in late November or early December. They are the equivalent of the Broadway theatre Drama Desk Awards.
The trophies take the form of a strongly modelled statuette, a somewhat Grecian figure representing Drama, designed by Frank Dobson RA, a former Professor of Sculpture at the Royal College of Art.
Three of the awards are given in the names of former Evening Standard notables:

Watch Ralph Fiennes acceptance speech after winning the Best Actor Award at the Evening Standard Theatre Awards 2016.
In Stephen Frears’s hilarious comedy about the worst singer ever to make it on to the public stage, Florence Foster Jenkins, Hugh Grant delivers what may just be the role of his life — never mind all those previous greatest hits: Four Weddings, Notting Hill, Bridget Jones, Love Actually and the like. As the failed English Shakespearean actor St Clair Bayfield, Florence’s financially dependent husband and deviously supportive manager, Grant is wonderful: hammy, dubiously aristocratic, not the gent he appears yet not entirely cynical either, with tenderness despite his infidelities. No other actor could have pulled off this funny-sad acceptance half so well. As he says in his credo: “You think I didn’t have ambition? I was a good actor but I was never going to be a great actor. It was very...

London Mayoral Election 2016. The race to succeed Boris Johnson as Mayor of London in May has entered the final stages. With just two weeks to go, Labour’s Sadiq Khan is hoping to seize City Hall for Labour for the first time since 2008. But Tory Zac Goldsmith has the backing of Government heavyweights and Mr Johnson. The pair went head-to-head at a major public debate tonight, chaired by Newsnight’s Kirsty Wark, as they battled it out for one of the top political jobs in the country. Vladimir Putin was born on October 7, 1952 in Leningrad. “I come from an ordinary family, and this is how I lived for a long time, nearly my whole life. I lived as an average, normal person and I have always maintained that connection,” Mr Putin recalls. ladimir Putin’s mother, Maria Shelomova, was a very kind, benevolent person. “We lived simply - cabbage soup, cutlets, pancakes, but on Sundays and holidays my Mom would bake very delicious stuffed buns [pirozhki] with cabbage, meat and rice, and curd tarts [vatrushki],” Mr Putin says. His mother did not approve of his decision to do judo. “Every time I went to a practice session, she would grumble, ‘He’s off to his fights again.’” Things changed after Vladimir Putin’s coach visited his home and told his parents about what he did and wha...
Brazil, known for its beautiful beaches and beautiful people, is home to the biggest pageants in the world. Each year, Miss World, Miss Universe, and Miss Earth are crowned in the country. And at the Penitenciaria Feminina da Capital in Sao Paolo—South America's largest all-female maximum security prison—so is Miss Max. Unlike traditional pageants, the contestants competing for the title of Miss Max are currently serving long sentences for crimes like drug trafficking, kidnapping, and even homicide. They are, however, judged using the standard pageant criteria: beauty, poise, and talent—plus their record of good behavior. This year, LGBTQ inmates can also vie for the title of Mr. Congeniality. We travel to Sao Paolo, Brazil, to capture the days of preparation leading up to the crowning...

With the rise of native apps, native wrappers, and even standards development, the browser has taken on a more behind the scenes role in web page delivery. I’ll be discussing the implications of this, and a framework for thinking about the role of the browser in the next generation of web applications.

God is a God of righteousness
God sits on the throne
God is strong in battle
God is God alone
God wise and merciful
God is soverign Lord
God is pure and holy
God reigns forevermore
CHORUS:
He's a great God, a righteous King
Ruler over everything
He's a great God, we will proclaim
Honor and glory to his name
God holds up the universe
God sustains the soul
God exalts and God puts down
God is in control
God's glory is eternal
God is love and peace
God knows all, sees all, is all
God is to be praised
(chorus)
Blessing and glory and wisdom
Thanksgiving and honor and power and might
Be to our God forever and ever
And all the saints said
Holy...Holy
Holy...Holy
Holy...Holy
Is, His, Name
Great God, great God
(chorus)(4x)
