An American Humvee lies in flames, destroyed by a suicide bomber. Nearby a woman, blinded in the assault, begs for news of her mother. As people stop to help, snipers open fire, killing one Iraqi guardsman and wounding another. It's just one of five car bombings in Baghdad occurring on this day. Sadr city has become a war zone with US forces and their Iraqi National Guard allies fighting the Shiites. High levels of unemployment and a deterioration of living conditions have fuelled the insurgence. "I go out from the morning until the afternoon looking for work and I can't find it," complains Wassim. Like many residents, he's angry that the Americans have not delivered on their promises and has turned instead to Sadr's Mehdi army. "You have seen the rubbish on the streets. There is no water, the gutters are overflowing. Only the Mehdi army is cleaning it." With squalor and unemployment providing fertile grounds for insurgency groups, hopes of a peaceful resolution look slim.

Iraq's Shia cleric Muqtada al Sadr is putting pressure on Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi to carry out reforms to fight corruption.
Sadr has managed to rally a huge number of angry Iraqi protesters who are demanding Abadi introduce reforms to put an end to corruption.
Last month, Sadr demanded Iraqi politicians be replaced with technocrats and the country's powerful Shia militias be incorporated into the ministries of Defence and Interior.
In the following weeks he called on his supporters to take to the streets, and each Friday their numbers grew.
While Iraq's political leadership has proposed multiple reform plans, some echoing Sadr's own demands, progress in parliament has been slow.
So, how far will Sadr go to push for change? And is this only about fighting corruption?

Debt-crippled Greece is a main gateway for illegal immigration into the European Union. Tens of thousands of people, mostly from Asia and Africa, in search of a better life are arrested on the country's borders every year. Those that make it struggle to survive.
Saysanu, from the small west African nation of Benin and Mutaz a former Translator for the Coalition Forces in Basra, Iraq are just two of tens of thousands of illegal migrants across Greece who have entered illegal from Turkey on their way to cities like Berlin, Rome, and Paris.
Every illegal immigrant has their own story, their own reasons, their own motivations, for making the dangerous trip.
Faced with few options following threats from the feared Militia of Muqtada al-Sadr and the subsequent kidnapping of his father, he left his home in search of more than just economic opportunity but personal freedom.
The journey so far has brought him thousands of miles across rivers, over mountain ranges and has even landed him in prison for 50 days but he remains determined on the path to his final destination in search of deliverance.
Saysanu as a sailor knew a future awaited him in the European Union as the economic situation remained bleak in his own nation. He scrapes by preforming his songs about his journey and a life without borders.
For now like most of the illegal immigrants they wait in what they dubbed the "station" - Greece, as they plot their move forward into the heart of the Eurozone.

Muqtada al-Sadr
Muqtadā al-Ṣadr (Arabic: سيد مقتدى الصدر; born 12 August 1973) is an Iraqi Islamic popular leader.
Sayyid Muqtada al-Sadr is one of the most influential religious and popular figures in Iraq, despite not holding any official title in the Iraqi government. He is the leader of a political party, the Sadrist Movement.
Titles
He is of the prominent Sadr family originating from Jabal Amel in Lebanon but later settled in Najaf, his father-in-law being Mohammad Baqir al-Sadr. He is often referred to as Sayyid Muqtada al-Sadr. The title Sayyid ("Mr." or "Sir") is generally used among Shi‘a Muslims related to Mohammed through his daughter Fatimah's marriage with Ali. Thus, a great deal of respect is paid by the Shiite Muslims to the Sayyids throughout society.
Western media often refer to Muqtada al-Sadr as a "anti-american" or "radical" cleric, but his formal religious standing is comparatively low, at a mid-ranking Shia religious rank perhaps reflecting his youth, and he does not claim the title of mujtahid (the equivalent of a senior religious scholar) or the authority to issue fatwas. In early 2008, however, al-Sadr was reported to be studying to be an ayatollah, which would greatly improve his religious standing.

The United States Armed Forces are the federal military forces of the United States. They consist of the Army, Marine Corps, Navy, Air Force, and Coast Guard. The President of the United States is the military's overall head, and helps form military policy with the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD), a federal executive department, acting as the principal organ by which military policy is carried out.
From the time of its inception, the military played a decisive role in the history of the United States. A sense of national unity and identity was forged as a result of victory in the First Barbary War and the Second Barbary War. Even so, the Founders were suspicious of a permanent military force. It played an important role in the American Civil War, where leading generals on both sides were picked from members of the United States military. Not until the outbreak of World War II did a large standing army become officially established. The National Security Act of 1947, adopted following World War II and during the Cold War's onset, created the modern U.S. military framework; the Act merged previously Cabinet-level Department of War and the Department of the Navy into the National Military Establishment (renamed the Department of Defense in 1949), headed by the Secretary of Defense; and created the Department of the Air Force and National Security Council.

Ali ibn Abi Talib (/ˈɑːli, ɑːˈliː/;Arabic: علي بن أبي طالب, translit. ʿAlī bin Abī Ṭālib, Arabic pronunciation: [ʕaliː bɪn ʔabiː t̪ˤaːlɪb]; 13 Rajab, 21 BH – 21 Ramadan, 40 AH; 15 September 601 – 29 January 661) was the cousin and son-in-law of the Islamic prophet Muhammad, ruling over the Islamic caliphate from 656 to 661.
Born to Abu Talib and Fatima bint Asad, Ali was the only person born in the sacred sanctuary of the Kaaba in Mecca, the holiest place in Islam, as many sources, especially Shia ones say. Ali was the first young male who accepted Islam. After migrating to Medina, he married Muhammad's daughter Fatimah. Ali took part in the early caravan raids from Mecca and later in almost all the battles fought by the nascent Muslim community. He was appointed caliph by Muhammad's Companions (Sahaba) in 656, after caliph Uthman ibn Affan was assassinated. Ali's reign saw civil unrest and in 661, he was attacked and assassinated by a Kharijite while praying in the Great Mosque of Kufa, dying two days later.

Sadr has managed to rally a huge number of angry Iraqi protesters who are demanding Abadi introduce reforms to put an end to corruption. Last month, Sadr demanded Iraqi politicians be replaced with technocrats and the country's powerful Shia militias be incorporated into the ministries of Defence and Interior. In the following weeks he called on his supporters to take to the streets, and each Friday their numbers grew. While Iraq's political leadership has proposed multiple reform plans, some echoing Sadr's own demands, progress in parliament has been slow. So, how far will Sadr go to push for change? Washington, DC – In his State of the Union address on Tuesday, President Obama renewed his commitment to withdraw US troops in Afghanistan by the end of the year. But he said the US preferred to leave “a small” number of US troops in Afghanistan, where they can engage in both training Afghan forces and carrying out irregular raids on radical militants. But Afghan President Hamid Karazai has not yet agreed to a security agreement that would allow for US troops to stay past 2014. This somehow reminds us of Iraq, where Prime Minister Nuri Maliki, under pressure from Iran and anti-American domestic figures such as Muqtada al-Sadr, was not willing to extend the presence of any number of US troops after 2011. In his recently published book, Robert Gates calls the complete withdrawal of US troops from Iraq a "victory" for Iran. Iraq has recently seen a spike in violence and resurgence of al-Qaeda affiliated militants. Now there is similar fear about the resurgence of Islamic militants in Afghanistan. So is Hamid Karazai Afghanistan’s Nuri Maliki? What are the challenges facing the U.S. with Hamid Karazai? Are we going to see the repeatition of what many see as the Iraq mistake? To discuss this subject, Rudaw’s Namo Abdulla talks to: -Marvin Weinbaum, a political scholar at the Middle East Institute. Sadr city has become a war zone with US forces and their Iraqi National Guard allies fighting the Shiites. High levels of unemployment and a deterioration of living conditions have fuelled the insurgence. "I go out from the morning until the afternoon looking for work and I can't find it," complains Wassim. Like many residents, he's angry that the Americans have not delivered on their promises and has turned instead to Sadr's Mehdi army. "You have seen the rubbish on the streets. There is no water, the gutters are overflowing. Only the Mehdi army is cleaning it." With squalor and unemployment providing fertile grounds for insurgency groups, hopes of a peaceful resolution look slim.

"I go out from the morning until the afternoon looking for work and I can't find it," complains Wassim. Like many residents, he's angry that the Americans have not delivered on their promises and has turned instead to Sadr's Mehdi army. "You have seen the rubbish on the streets. There is no water, the gutters are overflowing. Only the Mehdi army is cleaning it." With squalor and unemployment providing fertile grounds for insurgency groups, hopes of a peaceful resolution look slim.

Debt-crippled Greece is a main gateway for illegal immigration into the European Union. Tens of thousands of people, mostly from Asia and Africa, in search of a better life are arrested on the country's borders every year. Those that make it struggle to survive.
Saysanu, from the small west African nation of Benin and Mutaz a former Translator for the Coalition Forces in Basra, Iraq are just two of tens of thousands of illegal migrants across Greece who have entered illegal from Turkey on their way to cities like Berlin, Rome, and Paris.
Every illegal immigrant has their own story, their own reasons, their own motivations, for making the dangerous trip.
Faced with few options following threats from the feared Militia of Muqtada al-Sadr and the subsequent kidnapping of his father, he left his home in search of more than just economic opportunity but personal freedom.
The journey so far has brought him thousands of miles across rivers, over mountain ranges and has even landed him in prison for 50 days but he remains determined on the path to his final destination in search of deliverance.
Saysanu as a sailor knew a future awaited him in the European Union as the economic situation remained bleak in his own nation. He scrapes by preforming his songs about his journey and a life without borders.

Washington, DC – In his State of the Union address on Tuesday, President Obama renewed his commitment to withdraw US troops in Afghanistan by the end of the year.
But he said the US preferred to leave “a small” number of US troops in Afghanistan, where they can engage in both training Afghan forces and carrying out irregular raids on radical militants.
But Afghan President Hamid Karazai has not yet agreed to a security agreement that would allow for US troops to stay past 2014.
This somehow reminds us of Iraq, where Prime Minister Nuri Maliki, under pressure from Iran and anti-American domestic figures such as Muqtada al-Sadr, was not willing to extend the presence of any number of US troops after 2011.
In his recently published book, Robert Gates calls the complete withdrawal of US troops from Iraq a "victory" for Iran.
Iraq has recently seen a spike in violence and resurgence of al-Qaeda affiliated militants.
Now there is similar fear about the resurgence of Islamic militants in Afghanistan.
So is Hamid Karazai Afghanistan’s Nuri Maliki? What are the challenges facing the U.S. with Hamid Karazai? Are we going to see the repeatition of what many see as the Iraq mistake?
To discuss this subject, Rudaw’s Namo Abdulla talks to:
-Marvin Weinbaum, a political scholar at the Middle East Institute. He previously served as an analyst on Afganistan at the State Dept.
- Scott Bates, President of the Center for National Policy at the Truman National Security Project joins. Bates has worked in Afghanistan as part of an American team to promote democracy and good governance in the country.

Iraq's Shia cleric Muqtada al Sadr is putting pressure on Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi to carry out reforms to fight corruption.
Sadr has managed to rally a huge number of angry Iraqi protesters who are demanding Abadi introduce reforms to put an end to corruption.
Last month, Sadr demanded Iraqi politicians be replaced with technocrats and the country's powerful Shia militias be incorporated into the ministries of Defence and Interior.
In the following weeks he called on his supporters to take to the streets, and each Friday their numbers grew.
While Iraq's political leadership has proposed multiple reform plans, some echoing Sadr's own demands, progress in parliament has been slow.
So, how far will Sadr go to push for change? And is this only about fighting corruption?

The hardliner cleric Moqtada al-Sadr has long been a thorn in the side of the Americans. But after this weekend's events, has he gone too far?
Sadr wants the Americans and their secular idea of democracy out: "We don't want them or need them." Instead, he wants to introduce a Shi'ite administration which would impose Sharia law on the whole of the country. "Even non-Muslims will be subject to Islamic law." Sadr comes from one of the most revered Shia families in Iraq. After Saddam's agents assassinated his father and two brothers, he started an underground movement to resist the dictator. He believes the future of Iraq lies in the hands of the Shia. This pertinent report, filmed last summer, includes the only interview Sadr gave to a western reporter. It also includes useful footage of Sadr and his powerbase in the Holy City of Najaf, where Sharia law has already been imposed.

Assassination of Ayatollah al-Sadr by Saddam in 1999 (Never Released Video)
Grand Ayatollah Mohammad Sadeq al-Sadr was leaving the mosque in the Iraqi city of Najaf along with two of his sons on 2/19/1999 when ambushed by Saddam's assassins. Both of Ayatollah Sadr's sons were killed by gunfire while he was severely injured. Minutes later, Saddam's intelligence personnel disappointed of not having killed Sadeq al-Sadr, came back to finish the job!

Sadr city has become a war zone with US forces and their Iraqi National Guard allies fighting the Shiites. High levels of unemployment and a deterioration of living conditions have fuelled the insurgence. "I go out from the morning until the afternoon looking for work and I can't find it," complains Wassim. Like many residents, he's angry that the Americans have not delivered on their promises and has turned instead to Sadr's Mehdi army. "You have seen the rubbish on the streets. There is no water, the gutters are overflowing. Only the Mehdi army is cleaning it." With squalor and unemployment providing fertile grounds for insurgency groups, hopes of a peaceful resolution look slim.

Sadr has managed to rally a huge number of angry Iraqi protesters who are demanding Abadi introduce reforms to put an end to corruption.
Last month, Sadr demanded Iraqi politicians be replaced with technocrats and the country's powerful Shia militias be incorporated into the ministries of Defence and Interior.
In the following weeks he called on his supporters to take to the streets, and each Friday their numbers grew.
While Iraq's political leadership has proposed multiple reform plans, some echoing Sadr's own demands, progress in parliament has been slow.
So, how far will Sadr go to push for change? And is this only about fighting corruption?

Saysanu, from the small west African nation of Benin and Mutaz a former Translator for the Coalition Forces in Basra, Iraq are just two of tens of thousands of illegal migrants across Greece who have entered illegal from Turkey on their way to cities like Berlin, Rome, and Paris.
Every illegal immigrant has their own story, their own reasons, their own motivations, for making the dangerous trip.
Faced with few options following threats from the feared Militia of Muqtada al-Sadr and the subsequent kidnapping of his father, he left his home in search of more than just economic opportunity but personal freedom.
The journey so far has brought him thousands of miles across rivers, over mountain ranges and has even landed him in prison for 50 days but he remains determined on the path to his final destination in search of deliverance.
Saysanu as a sailor knew a future awaited him in the European Union as the economic situation remained bleak in his own nation. He scrapes by preforming his songs about his journey and a life without borders.
For now like most of the illegal immigrants they wait in what they dubbed the "station" - Greece, as they plot their move forward into the heart of the Eurozone.

But he said the US preferred to leave “a small” number of US troops in Afghanistan, where they can engage in both training Afghan forces and carrying out irregular raids on radical militants.
But Afghan President Hamid Karazai has not yet agreed to a security agreement that would allow for US troops to stay past 2014.
This somehow reminds us of Iraq, where Prime Minister Nuri Maliki, under pressure from Iran and anti-American domestic figures such as Muqtada al-Sadr, was not willing to extend the presence of any number of US troops after 2011.
In his recently published book, Robert Gates calls the complete withdrawal of US troops from Iraq a "victory" for Iran.
Iraq has recently seen a spike in violence and resurgence of al-Qaeda affiliated militants.
Now there is similar fear about the resurgence of Islamic militants in Afghanistan.
So is Hamid Karazai Afghanistan’s Nuri Maliki? What are the challenges facing the U.S. with Hamid Karazai? Are we going to see the repeatition of what many see as the Iraq mistake?
To discuss this subject, Rudaw’s Namo Abdulla talks to:
-Marvin Weinbaum, a political scholar at the Middle East Institute. He previously served as an analyst on Afganistan at the State Dept.
