In the second part of my lecture on German Unification, I discuss Otto von Bismarck's employment of "realpolitik" to rally the German people around his plan for a unified Germany under Prussian dominance. Bismarck created the first European welfare state in order to weaken the Social Democratic Party (which he banned) and supported liberals who wanted to industrialize Prussia while not supporting their liberal political reforms. Through the skillful use of realpolitik, Bismarck set the stage for the unification of Germany through "Blood and Iron."

Realpolitik (see also Political realism; from German: real "realistic", "practical" or "actual"; and Politik "politics", German pronunciation: [ʁeˈaːlpoliˌtiːk]) refers to politics or diplomacy based primarily on power and on practical and material factors and considerations, rather than ideological notions or moralistic or ethical premises. In this respect, it shares aspects of its philosophical approach with those of realism and pragmatism. The term realpolitik is sometimes used pejoratively to imply politics that are coercive, amoral, or Machiavellian. Balancing power to keep the European pentarchy was the means for keeping the peace, and careful Realpolitikers tried to avoid arms races.
'Realpolitik' was coined by Ludwig von Rochau, a German writer and politician in the 19th century. His 1853 book Grundsätze der Realpolitik angewendet auf die staatlichen Zustände Deutschlands describes the meaning of the term:

Darrell Hamamoto is a Professor of Asian American Studies at the University of California, Davis who is best known for his views on the desexualization of Asian American males in the media.
Dr. Hamamoto received his education at CSU Long Beach, Bowling Green State University and UC Irvine.
Professor Hamamoto created a 50-minute pornographic film named Skin on Skin, which starred Asian American actors and actresses and addresses the desexualization of Asian American males. Dr. Hamamoto created another piece called Yellowcaust: A Patriot Act, which includes clips from Skin on Skin and information regarding atrocities committed against Asian Americans in the U.S.'s history. His work has generated controversy for producing porn movies as research
Dr. Hamamoto was featured in both The Daily Show and Masters of the Pillow, which is a documentary about Skin on Skin.
