Derbyshire (i/ˈdɑːrbᵻʃər/ or /ˈdɑːrbɪʃɪər/; abbreviated Derbys. or Derbs.) is a county in the East Midlands of England. A substantial portion of the Peak District National Park lies within Derbyshire. The southern extremity of the Pennine range of hills extends into the north of the county. The county contains part of the National Forest, and borders on Greater Manchester to the northwest, West Yorkshire to the north, South Yorkshire to the northeast, Nottinghamshire to the east, Leicestershire to the southeast, Staffordshire to the west and southwest and Cheshire also to the west.
Kinder Scout, at 636 metres (2,087 ft), is the highest point in the county, whilst Trent Meadows, where the River Trent leaves Derbyshire, is its lowest point at 27 metres (89 ft). The River Derwent is the county's longest river at 66 miles (106 km), and runs roughly north to south through the county. In 2003 the Ordnance Survey placed Church Flatts Farm at Coton in the Elms (near Swadlincote) as the furthest point from the sea in Great Britain.
England i/ˈɪŋɡlənd/ is a country that is part of the United Kingdom. It shares land borders with Scotland to the north and Wales to the west. The Irish Sea lies northwest of England and the Celtic Sea lies to the southwest. England is separated from continental Europe by the North Sea to the east and the English Channel to the south. The country covers much of the central and southern part of the island of Great Britain, which lies in the North Atlantic; and includes over 100 smaller islands such as the Isles of Scilly, and the Isle of Wight.
The area now called England was first inhabited by modern humans during the Upper Palaeolithic period, but takes its name from the Angles, one of the Germanic tribes who settled during the 5th and 6th centuries. England became a unified state in the 10th century, and since the Age of Discovery, which began during the 15th century, has had a significant cultural and legal impact on the wider world. The English language, the Anglican Church, and English law – the basis for the common law legal systems of many other countries around the world – developed in England, and the country's parliamentary system of government has been widely adopted by other nations. The Industrial Revolution began in 18th-century England, transforming its society into the world's first industrialised nation.

I took these pictures of parts of the Derbyshire Peak District in November 2007. This clip features a few slides of Arbor Low, a late Neolithic/early Bronze Age henge which dates from around 2500 BC. This henge's stones are lying down now, but (controversially) no holes of any substance have been found to support the idea of them ever having stood erect. Doubtless, this theory will continue to be studied and discussed. However, these uncertainties, together with this place's prehistory, conjure mystery and fascination - what was the purpose of this stone circle and its enclosing earthwork? What was in the collective mind of the ancient peoples of Derbyshire? Arbor Low and similar places throughout Britain consumed resources - a significant diversion from local (mainly agrarian) economic ...

This story comes to us from the Derbyshire area of England, more specifically the town of Bakewell, the Wicksop Woods and Haddon Hall. Supposedly a true story, the creature described was said to be a wild man of the woods. Several points in the story pique my interest, such as the fact that he was unable to speak intelligently, but instead utters strange noises and grunts. he was also able to escape from his pursuers by climbing precipitous slopes, running faster than any of the men, and by swinging through the trees as though he were an ape of some sort. Further, he made teepee shaped huts in the woods. The image shown in the article of one such structure is very similar to many of the purported Bigfoot structures we find in the woods today. Was this a story of a demented man, living in...

The American Adventure (at one time briefly known as American Adventure World) was a theme park in Derbyshire, England, quite close to both Nottingham and Derby on the edge of Ilkeston. The park for many years had a number of large white-knuckle attractions, but in 2005 was re-themed as a 'family' park aimed at the under-14 market. In January 2007 the owners announced that it would not reopen for the new season, and the rides would be sold off. The American Adventure, built on an area of Country Park which had been subject to deep seam and opencast coal mining, was originally opened in June 1987 with an Old West and Cowboys vs. Native Americans theme. A theme park called Britannia Park had been opened on the site in 1985 but closed after just 10 weeks, insolvent, and its founder Peter Kel...
Shining Cliff Woods are an ancient woodland, located on the west bank of the River Derwent near to Ambergate in Derbyshire England. In medieval times "Schymynde-cliffe" was one of the seven royal parks within Duffield Frith and, as such, belonged to Edmund Crouchback, Earl of Lancaster. It was an estate within the manor of Alderwasley and in 1284 was given to William Foun who was given the job of maintaining the boundaries between the Pendleton and Peatpits Brooks. They passed to Thomas Lowe by marriage in 1471 and in 1514 he was granted by Henry VIII the right to "empark and empale" his estate and enjoy "free warren" within it. The woods include a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI). Some of the woodland is owned by Grith Fyrd Pioneers, but the Eastern part is (like Alport Height...
