Points of the compass

The points of the compass are points on a compass, specifically on the compass rose, marking divisions of the four cardinal directions: North, South, East, West. The number of points may be only the 4 cardinal points, or the 8 principal points adding the intercardinal (or ordinal) directions northeast (NE), southeast (SE), southwest (SW), and northwest (NW). In meteorological usage further intermediate points are added to give the sixteen points of a wind compass. Finally, at the most complete in European tradition, are found the full thirty-two points of the mariner's compass. In ancient China 24 points of the compass were used.

In the mariner's exercise of boxing the compass, all thirty-two points of the compass are named in clockwise order. The names of intermediate points are formed by the initials of the cardinal directions and their intermediate ordinal directions, and are very handy to refer to a heading (or course or azimuth) in a general or colloquial fashion, without having to resort to computing or recalling degrees. For most applications, the minor points have been superseded by degrees measured clockwise from North.

Southeastern United States

The Southeastern United States is the eastern portion of the Southern United States, and the southern portion of the Eastern United States.

Demographics

There is no official Census Bureau definition of the southeastern United States. However, the Association of American Geographers defines the southeastern United States as Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, and West Virginia. The OSBO uses the same states, but includes Arkansas and Louisiana

History

Culture

The predominant culture of the Southeast has its origins with the settlement of the region by British colonists and African slaves in the 17th century, as well as large groups of English, Scots and Ulster-Scots, Germans, French, and Acadians in succeeding centuries.

Climate

The Southeastern part of the United States is dominated by different varieties of the humid subtropical climate, but southern Florida such as the Miami metropolitan area has a tropical monsoon climate due to the significantly warmer winters. Summers are generally very hot throughout the entire region with relatively small temperature differences for July throughout the region, as proven by Miami's July high being 90.9 °F (32.7 °C) with even a coastal area as north as in Virginia Beach recording close to 88 °F (31 °C) on average that time of the year. With tropical air masses influencing the region precipitation is high throughout the year, and unlike more westerly areas on similar latitudes the Southeast is lush with vegetation. The tropical air masses do however cause significant hurricanes such as Hurricane Andrew (1992) and Hurricane Katrina (2005) wreaking havoc and causing significant damage to coastal areas.

Southeast (Metro-North station)

Southeast (formerly known as Brewster North) is a Metro-North Railroad station serving the residents of Southeast, New York via the Harlem Line. Trains leave for New York City every hour, and about every 30 minutes during rush hour. It is the terminus of the Harlem Line electrified service. For travel farther north to Wassaic, passengers must transfer here to diesel powered service. Exceptions are rush hours and a direct round-trip to Grand Central on weekends. It is 53.2 miles (86 km) from Grand Central Terminal and travel time to Grand Central is approximately one hour, 27 minutes. The current terminal complex opened in 1980 as a delayed replacement for the Dykeman's station, closed over a decade earlier, and took its current name in October 2003.

Southeast is the northernmost Harlem Line station in Metro-North fare zone 7. Just south of the station is Metro-North's Southeast Diesel Maintenance Facility, and trains either beginning or ending their routes here can be seen snaking to and from it before or afterwards.
