Beethoven - Moonlight Sonata (FULL) - Piano Sonata No. 14
Hello there!
I am very happy to see the ever-increasing number of subscribers to my channel. From now on, for every 20K new members I will donate 500 $ toward the development of a water well in a remote area. The Piano Sonata No. 14 in C♯ minor "Quasi una fantasia", op. 27, No. 2, by Ludwig van Beethoven
The sonata has three movements:
1 mvt: Adagio sostenuto.
2 mvt: Allegretto (click to go at 6:00 min).
3 mvt: Presto agitato (click to go at 8:05 min).
Adagio sostenuto
The first movement, in C♯ minor, is written in an approximate truncated sonata form. The movement opens with an octave in the left hand and a triplet figuration in the right. A melody that Hector Berlioz called a "lamentation", mostly by the right hand, is played against an accompanying ostinato triplet rhythm, simultaneously played by the right hand. The movement is played pianissimo or "very quietly", and the loudest it gets is mezzo forte or "moderately loud".
The adagio sostenuto has made a powerful impression on many listeners; for instance, Berlioz said of it that it "is one of those poems that human language does not know how to qualify. The work was very popular in Beethoven's day, to the point of exasperating the composer himself, who remarked to Carl Czerny, "Surely I've written better things.
Allegretto
The second movement is a relatively conventional scherzo and trio, a moment of relative calm written in D-flat major, the enharmonic equivalent of C♯ major, the more easily-notated parallel major of C♯ minor. Franz Liszt described the second movement as "a flower between two chasms."[citation needed] The slight majority of the movement is in piano, but a handful of sforzandos and forte-pianos helps to maintain the movement's cheerful disposition.
Presto agitato
The stormy final movement (C♯ minor), in sonata form, is the weightiest of the three, reflecting an experiment of Beethoven's (also carried out in the companion sonata, Opus 27, No. 1 and later on in Opus 101) placement of the most important movement of the sonata last. The writing has many fast arpeggios and strongly accented notes, and an effective performance demands lively and skillful playing.
It is thought that the C-sharp minor sonata, particularly the third movement, was the inspiration for Frédéric Chopin's Fantaisie-Impromptu, which manifests the key relationships of the sonata's three movements.
Of the final movement, Charles Rosen has written "it is the most unbridled in its representation of emotion. Even today, two hundred years later, its ferocity is astonishing.
Beethoven's heavy use of sforzando notes, together with just a few strategically located fortissimo passages, creates the sense of a very powerful sound in spite of the predominance of piano markings throughout. Within this turbulent sonata-allegro, there are two main themes, with a variety of variation techniques utilized.

At the opening of the work, Beethoven included a written direction that the sustain pedal should be depressed for the entire duration of the first movement. One option for dealing with this problem is to perform the work on a restored or replicated piano of the kind Beethoven knew. Proponents of historically informed performance using such pianos have found it feasible to perform the work respecting Beethoven's original direction.
For performance on the modern piano, most performers today try to achieve an effect similar to what Beethoven asked for by using pedal changes only where necessary to avoid excessive dissonance. For instance, the Ricordi edition of the score posted at the external link given below does include pedal marks throughout the first movement. These are the work of a 20th century editor, meant to facilitate performance on a modern instrument.

Ludwig van Beethoven's Symphony No. 1 in C Major (Op. 21) was premiered on April 2, 1800 at the K.K. Hoftheater nächst der Burg in Vienna, and is dedicated to Baron Gottfried van Swieten, an early patron of the composer. The piece was published in 1801 by Hoffmeister & Kühnel of Leipzig. It is unknown exactly when Beethoven finished writing this work, but sketches of the finale were found from 1795.
The symphony is clearly indebted to Beethoven's predecessors, particularly his teacher Haydn, but nonetheless has characteristics that clearly mark it as Beethoven's work, notably the frequent use of sforzandi and the prominent use of wind instruments. Sketches for the finale are found among the exercises Beethoven wrote while studying counterpoint under Albrechtsberger in the spring of 1795.

Movies are very important to me. They have been with me through thick and thin. But sometimes I forget that. So this is a tribute to the movies that made me the person I am today. This is for the movies who helped me through the rough times, who changed my views on things, and who touched me to the core. Whether its Disney or Les Miserables, Pirates of the Caribbean or Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy; each movie has touched me in its unique way. I hope you enjoy. Here is the list of movies in appearance, with one sentence on what they mean to me.
Les Miserables: only movie that made me cry from beginning to end (also I don't cry in movies a lot, more in TV shows, so this was a pretty big deal)
The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe: every time I watch it, it makes me feel like a hope filled child again who believes in magical wardrobes.
Princess Bride: taught me the value of true love and heavy sarcasm
Ballet Shoes: underrated and fairly un-talked about movie that I adore
West Side Story: first movie musical, not counting disney
Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy: CINEMATOGRAPHY
Not Another Happy Ending: first unknown "indie" film
Pirates of the Caribbean: my brother used to make me watch it and I hated him for it, but I've now seen the light and I've realized the impact it had on tween years.
Sound of Music: who doesn't love the Sound of Music? Also Julie Andrews is a goddess and we must protect her at all costs.
Mary Poppins: Again, Julie Andrews is incredible. Also, first exposure to the mix of animation and live action.
The Little Mermaid: favourite Disney film of all time.
Prince Caspian: movie that I will defend to the ends of the earth.
Chitty Chitty Bang Bang: classic childhood movie which was kind of traumatizing now that I actually think about it.
Star Trek: proof that reboots are sometimes worth it
Princess Diaries: what 90's born girl was not heavily influenced by this film?
Ella Enchanted: this sort of dumb movie actually taught me a lot about social justice, the different types of love, and the unfairness of the world.
Once: proved to me the power of music
Phantom of the Opera: the sets are flawless
Devil Wears Prada: proved to me once and for all that women can have positions of power.
Monty Python and the Holy Grail: first and favourite comedy of all time
Sissi: first foreign language film that I'm still not bored of
Frozen: holds some of the most beautiful animation that we've seen in a while
Love Actually: favourite christmas movie that changed my view on the romantic comedy and almost everything else involving romance
Star Wars: to say this film had a large impact on my life is a very wrong understatement. Since my dad showed me episode IV at an early age these movies have taught me a lot about the way films are made, and have an incredibly special place in my heart
The Way Way Back: this overlooked, underrated summer movie has touched me in a way that cannot be put into words
The Lord of The Rings: the impact that this movie has had on the last five years of my life is astounding. Not only do I consider this the best fantasy series in all of existence, but this is the very movie that made me want to go into film. And for that I am forever grateful.
Harry Potter: I owe Harry Potter everything.

The Russian pianist and teacher, Maria Grinberg [Marija I. Grinberg; Russian: Mария Gринберг], was born into a family of intelligentsia. Her father was a Hebrew scholar, and mother taught piano privately. Before the Revolution of 1917, the family was well off, which was no longer the case after the Communists seized power. Until the age of 18, Maria was taking piano lessons from Odessa's best teacher David Aisberg. Eventually she became a pupil of Felix Blumenfeld (the primary teacher of Vladimir Horowitz) and later, after his death, continued her studies with Konstantin Igumnov at Moscow Conservatory. In 1935, she won the Second Prize at the Second All-Union Pianist Competition.
A phenomenal virtuosa, Maria Grinberg had every right to become a major figure of Russian piano school. However, in 1937 both her husband and her father were arrested and executed as "enemies of the people". The pianist was fired by the state-run management and got a job as an accompanist of an amateur choreography group. During that time, she occasionally participated in concert performances playing timpani. Somehow, in a while, she was readmitted to the management as a piano soloist. She became a much-sought after pianist in Moscow, with concerts in Leningrad, Riga, Tallinn, Voronezh, Tbilisi, Baku and other cities all over the Soviet Union. At the age of 50, only after Stalin died in 1953, she was allowed to travel abroad. All in all, Grinberg went on 14 performing tours - 12 times in the Soviet bloc countries and twice in Holland where she became a nationally acclaimed figure. Critics enthusiastically compared her dazzling performances with those of Horowitz, Rubinstein, and Clara Haskil. However, the Soviet media never reprinted those laudatory reviews and pretty much ignored her successes.
Maria Grinberg was probably one of the greatest pianists of the 20th century. Unfortunately, she was unsuccessful in making her own artistic career work. A tremendous talent, she is virtually unknown in the West. Only at the age of 55, she was granted her first - and last - honorary title of the Distinguished Artist of the Russian Soviet Federation. Only at 61, she was given a professorship of the Gnessin Institute of Music. But neither Moscow Conservatoire, nor the jury of the Tchaikovsky International Competition offered her a seat. When she was in her late 40s, she noticed that her vision has become significantly worse. She addressed the problem, and it turned out that she had a brain tumor. She underwent a brain surgery. A small woman by stature, she had willpower of a giant. Just like Beethoven, she too "grabbed the Fate by the throat". Within a few months, she celebrated her 50th anniversary by performing three piano concertos in one evening - Bach's f minor, Beethoven Third, and Sergei Rachmaninov's Third with Moscow Philharmonic Orchestra. The event was sold-out, yet no review or even a small article in the press followed.
In 1970, her personal 13-LP album set featuring all Beethoven's 32 sonatas was released. This event was without a precedent in the history of Russian pianism. This was the first time when a Russian pianist recorded the complete set of Beethoven Sonatas. The Soviet musical press uttered not a single word of this unique event. Only three months before the pianist died, in 1978, critic Yudenich called these recordings in the Sovetskaya Muzyka magazine "a true feat of art". Not a single filming of Grinberg's live performances was made for TV or the silver screen.
Maria Grinberg died in 1978 in Tallinn, some ten weeks before her 70th birthday. When her daughter Nika came to Tallinn's funeral home, the undertaker declined to take money for the last services, as he knew who the deceased lady was. Gnessin Institute's director refused to hold a mourning ceremony on the Institute's premises, and only thanks to the efforts of Deputy Minister of Culture Kukharsky, the great pianist was given her last honor in a proper way...
Her sense of humor was legendary. Those who knew her recall a story. Her patronymic [the name of the father, customarily used in Russian names] was Israilyevna (that is, "daughter of Israel", the latter being the first name of her father). During the period of heightened hostilities between the Soviet Union and the State of Israel, which the Soviets always addressed as "Israeli aggressors," Maria Grinberg always introduced herself as "Maria Aggressorovna."

The Power (Snap! song)
"The Power" is a song by the German music group Snap! from their album World Power. It was released in January 1990 and reached number one in the Netherlands, Spain, Switzerland and the United Kingdom, as well as on the US Billboard Hot Dance Club Play and Hot Rap charts. On the Billboard Hot 100, "The Power" managed to reach number two for one week, behind "Vision of Love" by Mariah Carey. It is particularly known for its hook "I've got the power!"

Written by Michael Münzing and Luca Anzilotti (under the pseudonyms Benito Benites and John "Virgo" Garrett III) and produced by Snap!, it was the group's third single. Movies are very important to me. They have been with me through thick and thin. But sometimes I forget that. So this is a tribute to the movies that made me the person I am today. This is for the movies who helped me through the rough times, who changed my views on things, and who touched me to the core. Whether its Disney or Les Miserables, Pirates of the Caribbean or Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy; each movie has touched me in its unique way. I hope you enjoy. And in the comments, please let me know what movies have changed your life. I do not own anything. All rights go to their respective owners. Here is the list of movies in appearance, with one sentence on what they mean to me. Les Miserables: only movie that made me cry from beginning to end (also I don't cry in movies a lot, more in TV shows, so this was a pretty big deal) The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe: every time I watch it, it makes me feel like a hope filled child again who believes in magical wardrobes. Princess Bride: taught me the value of true love and heavy sarcasm Ballet Shoes: underrated and fairly un-talked about movie that I adore West Side Story: first movie musical, not counting disney Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy: CINEMATOGRAPHY Not Another Happy Ending: first unknown "indie" film Pirates of the Caribbean: my brother used to make me watch it and I hated him for it, but I've now seen the light and I've realized the impact it had on tween years. Sound of Music: who doesn't love the Sound of Music? Also Julie Andrews is a goddess and we must protect her at all costs. Mary Poppins: Again, Julie Andrews is incredible. Also, first exposure to the mix of animation and live action. The Little Mermaid: favourite Disney film of all time. Prince Caspian: movie that I will defend to the ends of the earth. Chitty Chitty Bang Bang: classic childhood movie which was kind of traumatizing now that I actually think about it. Star Trek: proof that reboots are sometimes worth it Princess Diaries: what 90's born girl was not heavily influenced by this film? Ella Enchanted: this sort of dumb movie actually taught me a lot about social justice, the different types of love, and the unfairness of the world. Once: proved to me the power of music Phantom of the Opera: the sets are flawless Devil Wears Prada: proved to me once and for all that women can have positions of power. Monty Python and the Holy Grail: first and favourite comedy of all time Sissi: first foreign language film that I'm still not bored of Frozen: holds some of the most beautiful animation that we've seen in a while Love Actually: favourite christmas movie that changed my view on the romantic comedy and almost everything else involving romance Star Wars: to say this film had a large impact on my life is a very wrong understatement. Since my dad showed me episode IV at an early age these movies have taught me a lot about the way films are made, and have an incredibly special place in my heart The Way Way Back: this overlooked, underrated summer movie has touched me in a way that cannot be put into words The Lord of The Rings: the impact that this movie has had on the last five years of my life is astounding. Not only do I consider this the best fantasy series in all of existence, but this is the very movie that made me want to go into film. And for that I am forever grateful. Harry Potter: I owe Harry Potter everything. -

3. Marcia funebre 4. Allegro Maria Grinberg Born: 1908 - Odessa, Russia Died: July 14, 1978 - Tallinn The Russian pianist and teacher, Maria Grinberg [Marija I. Grinberg; Russian: Mария Gринберг], was born into a family of intelligentsia. Her father was a Hebrew scholar, and mother taught piano privately. Before the Revolution of 1917, the family was well off, which was no longer the case after the Communists seized power. Until the age of 18, Maria was taking piano lessons from Odessa's best teacher David Aisberg. Eventually she became a pupil of Felix Blumenfeld (the primary teacher of Vladimir Horowitz) and later, after his death, continued her studies with Konstantin Igumnov at Moscow Conservatory. In 1935, she won the Second Prize at the Second All-Union Pianist Competition. A phenomenal virtuosa, Maria Grinberg had every right to become a major figure of Russian piano school. However, in 1937 both her husband and her father were arrested and executed as "enemies of the people". The pianist was fired by the state-run management and got a job as an accompanist of an amateur choreography group. During that time, she occasionally participated in concert performances playing timpani. Somehow, in a while, she was readmitted to the management as a piano soloist. She became a much-sought after pianist in Moscow, with concerts in Leningrad, Riga, Tallinn, Voronezh, Tbilisi, Baku and other cities all over the Soviet Union. At the age of 50, only after Stalin died in 1953, she was allowed to travel abroad. All in all, Grinberg went on 14 performing tours - 12 times in the Soviet bloc countries and twice in Holland where she became a nationally acclaimed figure. Critics enthusiastically compared her dazzling performances with those of Horowitz, Rubinstein, and Clara Haskil. However, the Soviet media never reprinted those laudatory reviews and pretty much ignored her successes. Maria Grinberg was probably one of the greatest pianists of the 20th century. Unfortunately, she was unsuccessful in making her own artistic career work. A tremendous talent, she is virtually unknown in the West. Only at the age of 55, she was granted her first - and last - honorary title of the Distinguished Artist of the Russian Soviet Federation. Only at 61, she was given a professorship of the Gnessin Institute of Music. But neither Moscow Conservatoire, nor the jury of the Tchaikovsky International Competition offered her a seat. When she was in her late 40s, she noticed that her vision has become significantly worse. She addressed the problem, and it turned out that she had a brain tumor. She underwent a brain surgery. A small woman by stature, she had willpower of a giant. Just like Beethoven, she too "grabbed the Fate by the throat". Within a few months, she celebrated her 50th anniversary by performing three piano concertos in one evening - Bach's f minor, Beethoven Third, and Sergei Rachmaninov's Third with Moscow Philharmonic Orchestra. The event was sold-out, yet no review or even a small article in the press followed. In 1970, her personal 13-LP album set featuring all Beethoven's 32 sonatas was released. This event was without a precedent in the history of Russian pianism. This was the first time when a Russian pianist recorded the complete set of Beethoven Sonatas. The Soviet musical press uttered not a single word of this unique event. Only three months before the pianist died, in 1978, critic Yudenich called these recordings in the Sovetskaya Muzyka magazine "a true feat of art". Not a single filming of Grinberg's live performances was made for TV or the silver screen. Maria Grinberg died in 1978 in Tallinn, some ten weeks before her 70th birthday. When her daughter Nika came to Tallinn's funeral home, the undertaker declined to take money for the last services, as he knew who the deceased lady was. Gnessin Institute's director refused to hold a mourning ceremony on the Institute's premises, and only thanks to the efforts of Deputy Minister of Culture Kukharsky, the great pianist was given her last honor in a proper way... Her sense of humor was legendary. Those who knew her recall a story. Her patronymic [the name of the father, customarily used in Russian names] was Israilyevna (that is, "daughter of Israel", the latter being the first name of her father). During the period of heightened hostilities between the Soviet Union and the State of Israel, which the Soviets always addressed as "Israeli aggressors," Maria Grinberg always introduced herself as "Maria Aggressorovna." Amazing documentary about the musical genius Ludwig Van Beethoven! A powerful, moving and accurate docudrama based on the life of Ludwig van Beethoven (1770-1827). Paul Rhys's masterful portrayal of Beethoven is particularly noteworthy, doing well to vividly convey the isolation and despair Beethoven experienced throughout his life, while insightful narration from the popular conductor, composer and presenter Charles Hazlewood does well to add a sophisticated educational dimension to the series.

Beethoven- 1st Symphony
Ludwig van Beethoven's Symphony No. 1 in C Major (Op. 21) was premiered on April 2, 1800 at the K.K. Hoftheater nächst der Burg in Vienna, and is dedicated to Baron Gottfried van Swieten, an early patron of the composer. The piece was published in 1801 by Hoffmeister & Kühnel of Leipzig. It is unknown exactly when Beethoven finished writing this work, but sketches of the finale were found from 1795. The symphony is clearly indebted to Beethoven's predecessors, particularly his teacher Haydn, but nonetheless has characteristics that clearly mark it as Beethoven's work, notably the frequent use of sforzandi and the prominent use of wind instruments. Sketches for the finale are found among the exercises Beethoven wrote while studying counterpoint under Albrechtsberger in the spring of 1795...

The Piano Sonata No. 14 in C♯ minor "Quasi una fantasia", op. 27, No. 2, by Ludwig van Beethoven
The sonata has three movements:
1 mvt: Adagio sostenuto.
2 mvt: Allegretto (click to go at 6:00 min).
3 mvt: Presto agitato (click to go at 8:05 min).
Adagio sostenuto
The first movement, in C♯ minor, is written in an approximate truncated sonata form. The movement opens with an octave in the left hand and a triplet figuration in the right. A melody that Hector Berlioz called a "lamentation", mostly by the right hand, is played against an accompanying ostinato triplet rhythm, simultaneously played by the right hand. The movement is played pianissimo or "very quietly", and the loudest it gets is mezzo forte or "moderately loud".
The adagio sostenuto has made a powerful impression on many listeners; for instance, Berlioz said of it that it "is one of those poems that human language does not know how to qualify. The work was very popular in Beethoven's day, to the point of exasperating the composer himself, who remarked to Carl Czerny, "Surely I've written better things.
Allegretto
The second movement is a relatively conventional scherzo and trio, a moment of relative calm written in D-flat major, the enharmonic equivalent of C♯ major, the more easily-notated parallel major of C♯ minor. Franz Liszt described the second movement as "a flower between two chasms."[citation needed] The slight majority of the movement is in piano, but a handful of sforzandos and forte-pianos helps to maintain the movement's cheerful disposition.
Presto agitato
The stormy final movement (C♯ minor), in sonata form, is the weightiest of the three, reflecting an experiment of Beethoven's (also carried out in the companion sonata, Opus 27, No. 1 and later on in Opus 101) placement of the most important movement of the sonata last. The writing has many fast arpeggios and strongly accented notes, and an effective performance demands lively and skillful playing.
It is thought that the C-sharp minor sonata, particularly the third movement, was the inspiration for Frédéric Chopin's Fantaisie-Impromptu, which manifests the key relationships of the sonata's three movements.
Of the final movement, Charles Rosen has written "it is the most unbridled in its representation of emotion. Even today, two hundred years later, its ferocity is astonishing.
Beethoven's heavy use of sforzando notes, together with just a few strategically located fortissimo passages, creates the sense of a very powerful sound in spite of the predominance of piano markings throughout. Within this turbulent sonata-allegro, there are two main themes, with a variety of variation techniques utilized.

At the opening of the work, Beethoven included a written direction that the sustain pedal should be depressed for the entire duration of the first movement. The modern piano has a much longer sustain time than the instruments of Beethoven's day, leaving for a rather blurry and dissonant tone.
One option for dealing with this problem is to perform the work on a restored or replicated piano of the kind Beethoven knew. Proponents of historically informed performance using such pianos have found it feasible to perform the work respecting Beethoven's original direction.
For performance on the modern piano, most performers today try to achieve an effect similar to what Beethoven asked for by using pedal changes only where necessary to avoid excessive dissonance. For instance, the Ricordi edition of the score posted at the external link given below does include pedal marks throughout the first movement. These are the work of a 20th century editor, meant to facilitate performance on a modern instrument.

Ludwig van Beethoven's Symphony No. 1 in C Major (Op. 21) was premiered on April 2, 1800 at the K.K. Hoftheater nächst der Burg in Vienna, and is dedicated to Baron Gottfried van Swieten, an early patron of the composer. The piece was published in 1801 by Hoffmeister & Kühnel of Leipzig. It is unknown exactly when Beethoven finished writing this work, but sketches of the finale were found from 1795.
The symphony is clearly indebted to Beethoven's predecessors, particularly his teacher Haydn, but nonetheless has characteristics that clearly mark it as Beethoven's work, notably the frequent use of sforzandi and the prominent use of wind instruments. Sketches for the finale are found among the exercises Beethoven wrote while studying counterpoint under Albrechtsberger in the spring of 1795.

Movies are very important to me. They have been with me through thick and thin. But sometimes I forget that. So this is a tribute to the movies that made me the person I am today. This is for the movies who helped me through the rough times, who changed my views on things, and who touched me to the core. Whether its Disney or Les Miserables, Pirates of the Caribbean or Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy; each movie has touched me in its unique way. I hope you enjoy. And in the comments, please let me know what movies have changed your life.

Here is the list of movies in appearance, with one sentence on what they mean to me.
Les Miserables: only movie that made me cry from beginning to end (also I don't cry in movies a lot, more in TV shows, so this was a pretty big deal)
The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe: every time I watch it, it makes me feel like a hope filled child again who believes in magical wardrobes.
Princess Bride: taught me the value of true love and heavy sarcasm
Ballet Shoes: underrated and fairly un-talked about movie that I adore
West Side Story: first movie musical, not counting disney
Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy: CINEMATOGRAPHY
Not Another Happy Ending: first unknown "indie" film
Pirates of the Caribbean: my brother used to make me watch it and I hated him for it, but I've now seen the light and I've realized the impact it had on tween years.
Sound of Music: who doesn't love the Sound of Music? Also Julie Andrews is a goddess and we must protect her at all costs.
Mary Poppins: Again, Julie Andrews is incredible. Also, first exposure to the mix of animation and live action.
The Little Mermaid: favourite Disney film of all time.
Prince Caspian: movie that I will defend to the ends of the earth.
Chitty Chitty Bang Bang: classic childhood movie which was kind of traumatizing now that I actually think about it.
Star Trek: proof that reboots are sometimes worth it
Princess Diaries: what 90's born girl was not heavily influenced by this film?
Ella Enchanted: this sort of dumb movie actually taught me a lot about social justice, the different types of love, and the unfairness of the world.
Once: proved to me the power of music
Phantom of the Opera: the sets are flawless
Devil Wears Prada: proved to me once and for all that women can have positions of power.
Monty Python and the Holy Grail: first and favourite comedy of all time
Sissi: first foreign language film that I'm still not bored of
Frozen: holds some of the most beautiful animation that we've seen in a while
Love Actually: favourite christmas movie that changed my view on the romantic comedy and almost everything else involving romance
Star Wars: to say this film had a large impact on my life is a very wrong understatement. Since my dad showed me episode IV at an early age these movies have taught me a lot about the way films are made, and have an incredibly special place in my heart
The Way Way Back: this overlooked, underrated summer movie has touched me in a way that cannot be put into words
The Lord of The Rings: the impact that this movie has had on the last five years of my life is astounding. Not only do I consider this the best fantasy series in all of existence, but this is the very movie that made me want to go into film. And for that I am forever grateful.

The Russian pianist and teacher, Maria Grinberg [Marija I. Grinberg; Russian: Mария Gринберг], was born into a family of intelligentsia. Her father was a Hebrew scholar, and mother taught piano privately. Before the Revolution of 1917, the family was well off, which was no longer the case after the Communists seized power. Until the age of 18, Maria was taking piano lessons from Odessa's best teacher David Aisberg. Eventually she became a pupil of Felix Blumenfeld (the primary teacher of Vladimir Horowitz) and later, after his death, continued her studies with Konstantin Igumnov at Moscow Conservatory. In 1935, she won the Second Prize at the Second All-Union Pianist Competition.
A phenomenal virtuosa, Maria Grinberg had every right to become a major figure of Russian piano school. However, in 1937 both her husband and her father were arrested and executed as "enemies of the people". The pianist was fired by the state-run management and got a job as an accompanist of an amateur choreography group. During that time, she occasionally participated in concert performances playing timpani. Somehow, in a while, she was readmitted to the management as a piano soloist. She became a much-sought after pianist in Moscow, with concerts in Leningrad, Riga, Tallinn, Voronezh, Tbilisi, Baku and other cities all over the Soviet Union. At the age of 50, only after Stalin died in 1953, she was allowed to travel abroad. All in all, Grinberg went on 14 performing tours - 12 times in the Soviet bloc countries and twice in Holland where she became a nationally acclaimed figure. Critics enthusiastically compared her dazzling performances with those of Horowitz, Rubinstein, and Clara Haskil. However, the Soviet media never reprinted those laudatory reviews and pretty much ignored her successes.
Maria Grinberg was probably one of the greatest pianists of the 20th century. Unfortunately, she was unsuccessful in making her own artistic career work. A tremendous talent, she is virtually unknown in the West. Only at the age of 55, she was granted her first - and last - honorary title of the Distinguished Artist of the Russian Soviet Federation. Only at 61, she was given a professorship of the Gnessin Institute of Music. But neither Moscow Conservatoire, nor the jury of the Tchaikovsky International Competition offered her a seat. When she was in her late 40s, she noticed that her vision has become significantly worse. She addressed the problem, and it turned out that she had a brain tumor. She underwent a brain surgery. A small woman by stature, she had willpower of a giant. Just like Beethoven, she too "grabbed the Fate by the throat". Within a few months, she celebrated her 50th anniversary by performing three piano concertos in one evening - Bach's f minor, Beethoven Third, and Sergei Rachmaninov's Third with Moscow Philharmonic Orchestra. The event was sold-out, yet no review or even a small article in the press followed.
In 1970, her personal 13-LP album set featuring all Beethoven's 32 sonatas was released. This event was without a precedent in the history of Russian pianism. This was the first time when a Russian pianist recorded the complete set of Beethoven Sonatas. The Soviet musical press uttered not a single word of this unique event. Only three months before the pianist died, in 1978, critic Yudenich called these recordings in the Sovetskaya Muzyka magazine "a true feat of art". Not a single filming of Grinberg's live performances was made for TV or the silver screen.
Maria Grinberg died in 1978 in Tallinn, some ten weeks before her 70th birthday. When her daughter Nika came to Tallinn's funeral home, the undertaker declined to take money for the last services, as he knew who the deceased lady was. Gnessin Institute's director refused to hold a mourning ceremony on the Institute's premises, and only thanks to the efforts of Deputy Minister of Culture Kukharsky, the great pianist was given her last honor in a proper way...
Her sense of humor was legendary. Those who knew her recall a story. Her patronymic [the name of the father, customarily used in Russian names] was Israilyevna (that is, "daughter of Israel", the latter being the first name of her father). During the period of heightened hostilities between the Soviet Union and the State of Israel, which the Soviets always addressed as "Israeli aggressors," Maria Grinberg always introduced herself as "Maria Aggressorovna."

In the Hammerklavier Sonata, Beethoven has transformed into sound an extraordinary concept of the order of universe. He has explored and exposed the whole great scheme of things; his understanding of space, of the movements of the heavenly spheres, of the chaotic irregularities and the magnetic powers that hold all in balance, the ultimate harmony and peace—and the revelation of it all. Beethoven has explored all the resources of the human soul. One hears chiseled out in strong contrasts the staggering physical power of nature and the comparative impotence of man.
But one hears more insistently the meteoric flights of man's mind and spirit. In the sound of this music one feels the solitariness of the single soul in contemplation of the infinite heights to which we may ascend—one lone human being contemplating the magnificence of nature. Beethoven explores the mysterious unknown—the awesome beauty of silence. Never was sound so silent; never was silence so moving.
Beethoven's concepts were as modern as Einstein himself. He gave his concepts eternal life through the language of music, as all-inclusive and abreast of our times as the meaning it expresses. Opus 106 is contemporary in every sense of the word. Those artists who create in one style only are small indeed in the presence of Beethoven, who is classicist, romanticist, impressionist, and cubist; whose art is abstract and not abstract, and who includes with magnificent effect all of the styles in one work, because the meaning of the work is all-inclusive.
Perhaps the developments in musical composition in the past one hundred years have helped to clarify this sonata, which has been little understood until this century. To listen to contemporary music one has learned to listen not for melodic threads, but for sound masses, for sound forms and figurations, and rhythmic patterns. This is a good way to approach understanding this great masterpiece.
No doubt, the fact that Beethoven was unable to hear except in his imagination made this extraordinary work possible. Every external problem was non-existent. Without concern for the pianistic problems, he forged miraculous sounds from the instrument, sound possibilities never before imagined.
The fact that Beethoven sketched many versions of a first subject before he started to build a composition undoubtedly means that he had considered and reconsidered every tone and every group of tones in the subject so absolutely that the development of the material for the entire composition must have been crystallizing in his mind during the long period of the evolution of the first few bars. When he started to construct the whole, the musical ideas for the complete work (the germs of which are all contained in the first subject) burst forth with amazing freshness and spontaneity.
The use and development of the first exclamatory subject in this sonata is like life propagating from life—ideas germinating like the multiplication of living cells. The birth of Opus 106 might be likened to the initial birth of living matter—a spontaneous process, but molded into a large plan by a mastermind.
...We are incredibly fortunate to have an edition with Beethoven's specific instructions to guide us in our interpretations. The composers before him were not in the habit of preserving as accurately so much information about how to play their pieces. Until this became available, musicians were working in the dark. However, even Beethoven's instructions go unheeded sometimes, as with op. 106. I think only Schnabel and I play the piece at the actual speed of his metronome mark, which is 138 for the first movement. Beethoven made his feelings about the metronome well known, so I cannot understand why pianists are afraid to attempt this. Though what we see in his scores may not always be easy to comprehend, we must humble ourselves and finally achieve his instructions. To ignore these instructions means we cannot even touch these works as Beethoven envisaged them. A musician can only begin to glimpse his towering genius after incorporating them.

The current leadership vacuum existing within the Muslim world is the very reason why organizations like ISIS and Hizb ut Tahrir gain popularity. Finally and perhaps most importantly, there are claims against both these organisations ISIS and HT being backed by intelligence agencies of America and Britain respectively and we have reasons to believe that there is some truth in these accusations.

We have a Full Moon in Virgo tomorrow, and the Virgo archetype so often motivates us into being healthy, vibrant and organized from within. The Virgo is also associated with the Great Divine Mother archetype, although it was misinterpreted many times before in our Human history. In Truth, the Virgo archetype is not about virginity ... it is about Purity, and no wonder I chose to be born under the influence of a Virgo Sun, since I incarnated on the White Ray of Purity and Unity consciousness. Virgo is also a healer by nature and through Nature, so this is also a time of inner healing/wholeness, and because the Sun is still in Pisces (spiritual Truth), it also helps with our inner healing/wholeness. Pisces is all about water, and water is Life. Pisces is the most spiritual sign, for it's the last sign in the spiral, before it begins anew again. Many of us who are ascending into a New reality and paradigm are now healing through being more Self/Soul expressive, being creative and doing all kinds of Soul Art. It is not just me, for I AM witnessing it all over the world by what my Divine companions are sharing with me. Pisces is the last sign of the 12-folded zodiac in western astrology, while in the Mayan astrology, they actually had 13 signs (13 as Source).
In Pisces, so many of us were highly intuitive and creative, and we were receiving almost "too many" ideas and visions to handle all at once. That is true for those of us who can be extremely open and hyper, and our lesson is a grounded sense of reality and choosing only that which is always in alignment with the highest Divine potential. We might have many options, but choosing the most optimal one is what we are learning. This is why our desires are now changing in the New ascending reality, and so the lesson during the Pisces Sun was to learn to choose from the infinite possibilities and to choose wisely. We were learning to tap into the collective superconscious (I prefer saying the superconscious, for the Scorpio archetype is more about the unconscious) and choose what best suits our New/expanded and authentic Self.
It is one level of mastery to understand and trust in the sense of greater destiny and the Great Divine Plan of Perfection, and a whole new level of Self mastery begins with embracing even that part of Source which is always experimenting, evolving and expanding. When we can master that level of Trust, we become as Source ourselves. We understand that even this part of All That Is, is utterly perfect in the grand scheme of things, whatever it may Be and how things appear in infinite Existence. Perception is everything. In Truth, there is only Divine Love that births all Life in Creation, and the archetype of Pisces represents that deep spiritual Love and Union.
We now also have the power to imagine the unimaginable ... that which is yet to be. We are now given the rod of magical Soul alchemy. Longing is an important part of this equation. A lot of individuals think that longing is bad. I AM not talking about attachments, as longing is something completely different. We are now realizing that our primal sense of longing is not bad, for it's exactly what triggers our deeper Divine remembrance of wonderful (otherworldly, even) Beauty and opens us up for more ... to be able to create more. Remember ... there is always more, and the journey of expansion is infinite. Once we open the doorway, it's already open, and we can't go back. No, not really ... our only desire on this part of the journey is to spiral onwards and step into the unknown ... for this is when the practice/training of our own co-creator abilities begins.
We are all Source extensions, and our school will now be about how we become more like Source itself, and activate that seed potential that lies in all of us, for it's how we were all created. How would Source feel ... how would Source think, and what would it love to create? It is all about the Divine Will, and the Divine creates through great Beauty. Beauty is a state of Art, and Art of the Heart is all about the infinite expression of Soul, which is the feminine counterpart of Source, the eternal Light of the Divine.
Let us create away and await a Magical New astrological year, a journey into the 13th octave of Being ... the Great unknown. This is where the game really gets interesting. Can You feel it? I AM feeling this intensely ever since the beginning of the Chinese year of the Horse!

It is one level of mastery to understand and trust in the sense of greater destiny and the Great Divine Plan of Perfection, and a whole new level of Self mastery begins with embracing even that part of Source which is always experimenting, evolving and expanding. When we can master that level of Trust, we become as Source ourselves. We understand that even this part of All That Is, is utterly perfect in the grand scheme of things, whatever it may Be and how things appear in infinite Existence. Perception is everything. In Truth, there is only Divine Love that births all Life in Creation, and the archetype of Pisces represents that deep spiritual Love and Union.
We now also have the power to imagine the unimaginable ... that which is yet to be. We are now given the rod of magical Soul alchemy. Longing is an important part of this equation. A lot of individuals think that longing is bad. I AM not talking about attachments, as longing is something completely different. We are now realizing that our primal sense of longing is not bad, for it's exactly what triggers our deeper Divine remembrance of wonderful (otherworldly, even) Beauty and opens us up for more ... to be able to create more. Remember ... there is always more, and the journey of expansion is infinite. Once we open the doorway, it's already open, and we can't go back. No, not really ... our only desire on this part of the journey is to spiral onwards and step into the unknown ... for this is when the practice/training of our own co-creator abilities begins.
We are all Source extensions, and our school will now be about how we become more like Source itself, and activate that seed potential that lies in all of us, for it's how we were all created. How would Source feel ... how would Source think, and what would it love to create? It is all about the Divine Will, and the Divine creates through great Beauty. Beauty is a state of Art, and Art of the Heart is all about the infinite expression of Soul, which is the feminine counterpart of Source, the eternal Light of the Divine.
Let us create away and await a Magical New astrological year, a journey into the 13th octave of Being ... the Great unknown. This is where the game really gets interesting. Can You feel it? I AM feeling this intensely ever since the beginning of the Chinese year of the Horse!
