1. The croissant was invented in Austria. The
Wiener Schnitzel is a typical
Austrian main dish and the dessert "Strudel" or "
Apfelstrudel" (filled with apple) was also created in Austria.

The world's largest emerald (2860 carat) is displayed in the
Imperial Treasury of the
Hofburg (Imperial Palace) in
Vienna. It was commissioned by the
Hapsburg king,
Emperor Ferdinand III in 1641, and was carved out of a single large emerald crystal of Colombian origin.
3. Founded in 803 as
Stiftskeller St. Peter in
Salzburg, Haslauer is the world's oldest inn/restaurant still in operation, and the oldest company in Europe.
4. Austria has given the world many famous people, like the classical music composers:
Haydn,
Mozart,
Schubert,
Liszt, J. Strauss,
Mahler, and
Bruckner, actor
Arnold Schwarzenegger, former
Hollywood actor and governor of
California, the father of psychoanalysis,
Sigmund Freud, the founder of the
German sports car company 'Porsche' was the Austrian
Ferdinand Porsche, who also designed the Volkswagen,
Christian Doppler, the scientist who discovered the “
Doppler Effect”.
5. Austria’s flag is one of, if not the, oldest national banners in the world. In 1191,
Duke Leopold V of Austria’s tunic became blood spattered and, upon removal of his wide sash, a white band was revealed. The red-white-red color combination was then adopted as his banner.
6. 62% of Austria's total land area is covered by the
Austrian Alps.
7. The Habsburgs’
Winter Palace in the capital of
Austria, Vienna, the
Hofburg, has over 3,
000 rooms and is bigger than the
Louvre in
Paris. It was over 600 years in the making because all the emperors had to build new wings for themselves. Today it houses 20 different museums.
