The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine (Ukrainian: Верхо́вна Ра́да Украї́ни, Ukrainian abbreviation ВРУ; literally Supreme Council of Ukraine), often simply Verkhovna Rada or just Rada, is the unicameral parliament of Ukraine. The Verkhovna Rada is composed of 450 deputies, who are presided over by a chairman (speaker). The Verkhovna Rada meets in the Verkhovna Rada building in Ukraine's capital Kiev.
The Verkhovna Rada was transformed out of the system of republican representative body known in the Soviet Union as Supreme Soviet (Supreme Council) that was first established back in 1938 as a type of legislature of the Ukrainian SSR after the reorganization of the Central Executive Committee of the Ukrainian SSR.
The 12th convocation of the Supreme Council of the Ukrainian SSR (elected in 1990) issued the Declaration of Independence of Ukraine, introduced elements of a market economy and political liberalization, and officially changed the numeration of its sessions, proclaiming itself the first convocation of the "Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine". The current parliament is the eighth convocation. Because of the War in Donbass and the unilateral annexation of Crimea by Russia elections for the constituencies situated in Donbass and Crimea were not held in the 2014 Ukrainian parliamentary election; hence the current composition of the Verkhovna Rada consists of 423 deputies.
Fighting erupted in the Ukrainian parliament after the Prime Minister Arseniy Yatseniuk was pulled from the podium. The Prime Minister was defending his government's record when MP Oleh Barna walked over to him with a bunch of roses and then grabbed him around the waist. "This is what happened Wednesday, the first day of the national legislature's new session, in Kiev's Verkhovna Rada parliament building. Those are national lawmakers. Yes, scuffles are nothing new for the Ukrainian parliament, as this slideshow demonstrates. Given that former prime minister was sentenced to seven years in prison, on charges that the European Union said were politically motivated; and that the recent election was marred by violence, protests and allegations of fraud, maybe it's not shocking that lawmakers are unhappy with one another. The Wall Street Journal's Tom Gara calls this scene "maybe the most vigorous punch to the groin ever caught on camera." Gara tweets, "Look at that picture closely: perfect technique, full extension, putting his back into it, connects at the ...
The fight broke out between members of the pro-Western opposition who want to take Ukraine out of Russia's shadow and lawmakers from President Viktor Yanukovych's party, which bases its support in Ukraine's Russian-speaking east. At least one legislator, opposition lawmaker Mykola Petruk, suffered an apparent blow to the head and was taken to the hospital with blood streaming down his face. During a fight in April 2010, the parliament speaker hid behind an umbrella as opposition lawmakers threw eggs and smoke bombs to protest a naval pact with Russia. Ukraine is deeply divided into the Russian-speaking east and south, which favors close ties with Moscow, and the Ukrainian-speaking west, which wants Ukraine to join the Western club. Mourners are to gather at the Ukrainian embassy in Moscow, Friday, to place flowers and candles at a memorial to journalist Oles Buzina and former MP Oleg Kalashnikov, who were both killed in Kiev earlier this week. Buzina, who was heavily critical of Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko’s government, was killed outside his apartment in Kiev last Thursday. He was a former editor-in-chief of the Segodnya newspaper and was well known for his writing several books including ‘Vampire Taras Shevchenko’ and ‘The Union of Plough and Trident’. Kalashnikov, the former deputy of the Verkhovna Rada during ousted president Viktor Yanukovich’s time in office, was found shot dead at his apartment in Kiev on Wednesday night. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------...
Clashes are reported in central Kiev where crowds of protesters are rallying against the economic crisis and the soaring cost of private loans. Local media say several people have tried to break into the Ukrainian parliament. Four policemen and two protesters were reportedly injured in the clashes, as protesters blocked the exits of the parliament building. The so-called "Financial Maidan" crowd is demanding that the parliament approves the law on restructuring private loans in foreign currency, which would convert people's debts into national currency at pre-crisis levels. The protesters have set fire to car tires and attempted to break into the parliament building. Riot police have so far been able to hold them back. Life News however reports several activists did manage to get into t...

Tensions in the Ukrainian parliament boiled over on Friday. Two lawmakers were in a debate on a TV station. When it was over they came to blows in the hallway. The two are on opposite sides of the president's refusal to sign an agreement of association with the European Union
A Ukrainian MP, notorious even among his colleagues for making his political point with his fists, was caught on camera ambushing a long-time rival after a TV debate and later vandalizing the man’s car. Vladimir Parasyuk is one of several MPs in the current Ukrainian parliament, the Verkhovna Rada, who got their positions by capitalizing on the publicity they gained as leaders of paramilitary units which played a key part in overthrowing Ukraine’s previous government. During his days as a lawmaker with immunity from prosecution, the cocky 29-year-old has engaged in several brawls with Ukrainian officials, both inside the Rada and in other offices. One of his opponents is Aleksandr Vilkul, whom Parasyuk and several likely-minded MPs forced to leave the parliamentary rostrum for speaking R...

Overnight a group of some 20 people, reportedly radical Ukrainian nationalists, attacked the Russian Embassy in Kiev with fireworks. The embassy is bracing itself for potential trouble on election day. The attack happened at about 1:00am on Saturday morning, a diplomatic source told TASS news agency. “Unidentified individuals threw a smoke stick at the embassy’s territory and shot fireworks at the building,” the source said, adding that the attackers failed to ignite anything. Footage of the incident taken from a passing car shows multiple fireworks being fired at the windows of the embassy. The projectiles do not appear to do much damage since the windows were covered by metal shades. The Russian Foreign Ministry said it was investigating the details of the attack and would release an of...

German version: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AvAb62UgITI On 20th November 2012 MEP Ewald Stadler hosted a conference about the Ukrainian parliamentary elections 2012 in the European Parliament in Strasbourg. The guests and participants of this well-attended conference, among them the MEPs Bruno Gollnisch, Nick Griffin, Daniel van der Stoëp, Pawel Zalewski and Dimitar Stoyanov, enriched the discussion with their expressions about other examples of attempted election fraud in France and the UK. Additionally, host Ewald Stadler called attention to the fact that there is no country with entirely trouble-free elections. Leonid Kozhara, the vice chairman of the Party of Regions said that the elections had passed routinely, only the seemingly world record number of observers had been a speci...

But on the 18th, massive and fatal clashes broke out between police and protesters outside the Ukrainian parliament building, the Rada. After hours of fierce fighting, the protesters were pushed back onto their last lines of defense in Independence square and just about forced the police back after an attempt to clear the square. Once the dust had settled almost 30 police and protesters had been killed, on a day where firearms were used openly by both sides for the first time. Vice News arrived a day later to a city on lockdown and Independence square resembling a d...
