The FORCED 'Execution' Of Erwin Rommel - The Desert Fox
During the Second World War, there was a German general who received a fearsome reputation as a military genius and tactician. Erwin Rommel was nicknamed, 'The Desert Fox,' by his enemies and his allies due to his wily and skilled reading of the battlefield. He was synonymous with the conflict in North Africa, being placed in charge of the Afrika Corps, and he led them with great skill. Hitler was a great admirer of Rommel, and promoted him heavily, and his victories in Africa against the Allies elevated him to a incredibly popular figure within Nazi Germany.
Erwin Rommel was then handed over control of overseeing the defence of Normandy in anticipation for an Allied Invasion, that would come during D-Day. However in 1944, during his celebrated military career and in the midst of World W...

Afrika Korps War Crimes - The "War Without Hate" Myth
The North African campaign is often described as 'war without hate" due to the decency shown by the combatants to each other. But the Africa Korps committed many war crimes, most of which are unknown today, sullying its reputation and that of its illustrious commander Field Marshal Erwin Rommel.

Patton (George C. Scott) and his men attack and annihilate Rommel's battalion of tanks and infantry during the Tunisia campaign in Africa.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
In 1943 North Africa, George Patton (George C. Scott) assumes command of (and instills some much-needed discipline in) the American forces. Engaged in battle against Germany's Field Marshal Rommel (Karl Michael Vogler), Patton drives back "The Desert Fox" by using the German's own tactics. Promoted to Lieutenant General, Patton is sent to Sicily, where he engages in a personal war of egos with British Field Marshal Montgomery (Michael Bates). Performing brilliantly in Italy, Patton seriously jeopardizes his future with a single slap. While touring an Army hospital, the General comes across a GI (Tim Considine) suffering from nervous fatigue. Incensed by what he considers a slacker, Patton smacks the poor soldier and orders him to get well in a hurry. This incident results in his losing his command-and, by extension, missing out on D-Day. In his final campaign, Patton leads the US 3rd Army through Europe. Unabashedly flamboyant, Patton remains a valuable resource, but ultimately proves too much of a "loose cannon" in comparison to the more level-headed tactics of his old friend Omar Bradley (Karl Malden). Patton won 7
Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Actor for Scott, an award that he refused.

CLIP DESCRIPTION:

However in 1944, during his celebrated military career and in the midst of World War 2, Rommel began to doubt the German war effort and Hitler's leadership. He began to see no way for the Germans to win the war, and tried to get Hitler to negotiate a truce with the Western Allies, however he became implicated in the July 20th Plot, (Stauffenberg Plot) to assassinate Adolf Hitler. A number of his friends grew close to the plot, and Rommel was aware of a coup to overthrow the Dictator of Nazi Germany, but was not aware that the plan resulted in the death of Hitler. He was even briefed that he would lead Germany after the removal of Hitler from power, however the plot failed.
After the Stauffenberg Plot, the Gestapo rounded up anyone linked to the failed bombing of Hitler's Wolf's Lair. During torture, Rommel's name was mentioned and he was explicitly linked. This caused a problem for Hitler, as he could not execute the incredibly popular general, so he gave Erwin Rommel three choices; defend himself in front of Hitler, face the People's Court which would have resulted in his execution by the guillotine, or take his own life. This ultimatum in a sense was Rommel's death sentence, and there was no way that he would get out of the situation alive. It was either be executed by the hand of Hitler's generals, the guillotine, or take his own life. He chose the latter, and after his death he was celebrated as a war hero still in Germany, and was given a state funeral.
Although Rommel was not explicitly executed, he certainly was offered a death sentence by Hitler and his government.
