From Gothic Lolitas to Yoyogi Rockabillies, the Tokyo neighborhood of Harajuku is a wellspring of some of the world's most unique and extreme fashion trends. Rife with restaurants, shops, and cafes, it's a hangout 'hood for the city's youth, whose style is confined to uniforms from elementary school through to high school graduation. And, perhaps to rebel from such strict sameness, they spend their weekends seeing how far they can push the limits.
One of the oldest and most pervasive Harajuku style groups is Decora, characterized by a pursuit of kawaii, or "cuteness," which is expressed in massive piles of hair clips, face bandaids, creative layering, and a mishmash of colors and textures. Don't let "cute" confuse you: There's nothing delicate or elegant about Decora. It's bright, it's loud, and it's in your face (or rather, on your face, via a Hello Kitty bandaid). Though the style can appear as frivolous as a Halloween costume, there's a real statement behind the bevy of barrettes. In the face of pervasive group-mindedness, a rigid social order, and cultural reticence, the Decora have figured out a way to break free.
In the first episode of our new documentary series, Style Out There, our host Asha Leo travels to Harajuku to meet with street fashion superstars, like 90884 designer Kurebayashi, Junnyan, and Shoichi Aoki, the founder of FRUiTS magazine, to peel back the rainbow-colored stickers and uncover the depth behind Decora.

Pregunta estrella - ¿Qué significa Nekojita?
Literalmente significa lengua de gato y en Japón se le dice a las personas que no soportan la comida caliente dentro de la boca.
1 - ¿Sois amigos, novios o matrimonio?
Las tres cosas y en ese orden. Matrimonio desde verano de 2012.
2 - ¿Dónde aprendisteis a hablar español y japonés?
Todavía no sabemos hablar perfectamente un idioma extranjero, pero en el caso de Ernesto estudió japonés en una escuela y posteriormente en la universidad, ambas en Japón. En el caso de Yuko estudió español en dos escuelas en Sevilla (España).
3 - ¿Qué cámaras utilizas para grabar?
Dependiendo del tipo de escena utilizamos una Sony AS200 (ojo de pez), Sony A5100 y Canon g7x.
4 - ¿Con qué editas los vídeos?
Todo el material es editado, exportado y subido a Youtube en un Macbook Pro Retina 2015. El software de edición que utilizo es Final Cut Pro X.
5 - ¿De dónde sacas la música para tus vídeos? ¿Puedo usarla para los míos?
Algunas canciones las tomo de la librería gratuita de Youtube, pero la mayoría de ellas las utilizo tras contactar con los propios artistas. Algunas están bajo la licencia Creative Commons (tal y como indico en cada vídeo) y todas estas las puedes usar siempre y cuando dejes los créditos para el autor. Para las canciones que no son CC es obligatorio pedir permiso al autor o sello discográfico.
6 - ¿Estáis en alguna network?

Harajuku is the center of Japanese Youth Fashion. Cute and colorful, the pop fashion culture is thriving here, and John Daub goes deep into it. He becomes a Harajuku guy!
What exactly is Harajuku fashion? Let's cruise down Harajuku's famous Takeshita-Dori for the complete first-hand story.
Joining John in this report is Michelle Branch, an international fashion consultant and buyer for Japanese Youth Fashion. She's not only knows the local fashion scene, she's a part of it herself.
The story goes beyond fashion. We'll meet Doi-san, the owner of ACDC RAG, a Takeshita fashion shop that's been operating since the 1970s and competing strong against the new chain shops.
We'll ask him how Harajuku fashion has evolved since then.
John and Michelle also visit THANK YOU MART, a fashion and novelty chain store where everything is only 390 yen! It's the perfect place for youth accessories and to have some fun shopping.

Harajuku (原宿 "meadow lodging") 
listen (help·info) is the common name for the area around Harajuku Station on the Yamanote Line in the Shibuya ward of Tokyo, Japan.
Every Sunday, moi young people dressed in a variety of styles including gothic lolita, visual kei, and decora, as well as cosplayers spend the day in Harajuku socializing. The fashion styles of these youths rarely conform to one particular style and are usually a mesh of many. Most young people gather on Jingu Bridge, which is a pedestrian bridge that connects Harajuku to the neighboring Meiji Shrine area.
Harajuku is also a fashion capital of the world, renowned for its unique street fashion. Harajuku street style is promoted in Japanese and international publications such as Kera, Tune, Gothic & Lolita Bible and Fruits. Many prominent designers and fashion ideas have sprung from Harajuku and incorporated themselves into other fashions throughout the world.
Harajuku is also a large shopping district that includes international brands, its own brands, and shops selling clothes young people can afford.

Kawaii and colorful fashion at a Japanese decora meetup in Tokyo's famous Harajuku fashion district. Decora is a Japanese subculture that revolves around colorful outfits with lots of cute accessories - especially brightly colored plastic hair clips. Decora was extremely popular in Harajuku in the early 2000s, with hundreds of decora gathering on the Jingu Bashi bridge every weekend to hang out with their friends, trade fashion tips, and have fun. Rife with restaurants, shops, and cafes, it's a hangout 'hood for the city's youth, whose style is confined to uniforms from elementary school through to high school graduation. And, perhaps to rebel from such strict sameness, they spend their weekends seeing how far they can push the limits.
One of the oldest and most pervasive Harajuku style groups is Decora, characterized by a pursuit of kawaii, or "cuteness," which is expressed in massive piles of hair clips, face bandaids, creative layering, and a mishmash of colors and textures. Don't let "cute" confuse you: There's nothing delicate or elegant about Decora. It's bright, it's loud, and it's in your face (or rather, on your face, via a Hello Kitty bandaid). Though the style can appear as frivolous as a Halloween costume, there's a real statement behind the bevy of barrettes. In the face of pervasive group-mindedness, a rigid social order, and cultural reticence, the Decora have figured out a way to break free.

Literalmente significa lengua de gato y en Japón se le dice a las personas que no soportan la comida caliente dentro de la boca.
1 - ¿Sois amigos, novios o matrimonio?
Las tres cosas y en ese orden. Matrimonio desde verano de 2012.
2 - ¿Dónde aprendisteis a hablar español y japonés?
Todavía no sabemos hablar perfectamente un idioma extranjero, pero en el caso de Ernesto estudió japonés en una escuela y posteriormente en la universidad, ambas en Japón. En el caso de Yuko estudió español en dos escuelas en Sevilla (España).
3 - ¿Qué cámaras utilizas para grabar?
Dependiendo del tipo de escena utilizamos una Sony AS200 (ojo de pez), Sony A5100 y Canon g7x.
4 - ¿Con qué editas los vídeos?
Todo el material es editado, exportado y subido a Youtube en un Macbook Pro Retina 2015. El software de edición que utilizo es Final Cut Pro X.
5 - ¿De dónde sacas la música para tus vídeos? ¿Puedo usarla para los míos?
Algunas canciones las tomo de la librería gratuita de Youtube, pero la mayoría de ellas las utilizo tras contactar con los propios artistas. Algunas están bajo la licencia Creative Commons (tal y como indico en cada vídeo) y todas estas las puedes usar siempre y cuando dejes los créditos para el autor. Para las canciones que no son CC es obligatorio pedir permiso al autor o sello discográfico.
6 - ¿Estáis en alguna network?
No, somos parte del plan de partners de Youtube.
7 - ¿Vivís de Youtube?
No, cada uno tenemos nuestro trabajo.

What exactly is Harajuku fashion? Let's cruise down Harajuku's famous Takeshita-Dori for the complete first-hand story.
Joining John in this report is Michelle Branch, an international fashion consultant and buyer for Japanese Youth Fashion. She's not only knows the local fashion scene, she's a part of it herself.
The story goes beyond fashion. We'll meet Doi-san, the owner of ACDC RAG, a Takeshita fashion shop that's been operating since the 1970s and competing strong against the new chain shops.
We'll ask him how Harajuku fashion has evolved since then.
John and Michelle also visit THANK YOU MART, a fashion and novelty chain store where everything is only 390 yen! It's the perfect place for youth accessories and to have some fun shopping.

Kawaii and colorful fashion at a Japanese decora meetup in Tokyo's famous Harajuku fashion district.
Decora is a Japanese subculture that revolves around colorful outfits with lots of cute accessories - especially brightly colored plastic hair clips. Decora was extremely popular in Harajuku in the early 2000s, with hundreds of decora gathering on the Jingu Bashi bridge every weekend to hang out with their friends, trade fashion tips, and have fun.
Today's Japanese decora - while not in the numbers they once were - still carry on the tradition of bright colorful clothing and lots of accessories, while adding their own personal touches to the style. Recently, we've also seen an increase in people mixing decora with shironuri, which you can see in a couple of these looks.
This Harajuku decora meetup was a chance for several of Tokyo's decora to get together and have fun while spending the day wandering around Harajuku together. The day ended with ice cream!
We will be posting street snaps of each of the decora outfits from the decora meetup - please check back soon for the link.
