The full story of Kevin Keegan's "I will love it" rant in 1996 - SKY SPORTS MONDAY NIGHT FOOTBALL
"I've kept quiet but I'll tell you something. He went down in my estimation when he said that. We've not resorted to that.
"But I'll tell ya. You can tell him now, he'll be watching it. We're still fighting for this title and he's got to go to Middlesbrough and get something and...and I'll tell you honestly, I will love it if we beat them — LOVE IT!
But it really has got to me. I've voiced it live, not in front of the press or anywhere. I'm not even going to the press conference. But the battle is still on and Man United have not won this yet."
The Newcastle manager was responding to provocation from Sir Alex Ferguson. By January 1996, Newcastle had a 12 point lead at the top of the table and a first league trophy in almost 70 years looked on the horizon. Indeed, some bookmakers even paid out.
Newcastle struggled in the first few months of the new year while United were relentless, 1-0 wins courtesy of Cantona becoming laughably predictable. In early March, United went to Newcastle, Peter Schmeichel was outstanding, Cantona scored and the gap was cut to a single point. If this season ended with a whimper, not a bang then the latter stages of the 1995/96 season could not provide a more marked contrast. As United’s form started to look ominous, Ferguson decided to turn the screw by suggesting teams like Nottingham Forest might not try as hard against Newcastle as they did against his side. After victory at Leeds at the tail end of the season, Keegan launched into his infamous rant. But Keegan’s passionate outburst failed to spark his troops and the Red Devils went on to seal the championship by four points.
As recently as 2012, the infamous “love it” moment was voted the most memorable quote of the Premier League era & the interview is no.1 moment of manager madness.

Joseph Kevin Keegan, OBE (born 14 February 1951) is a former international footballer and former manager of the England national football team and several English clubs, most notably Newcastle United.
As a player in the 1970s and 1980s, he has been described as "arguably the first superstar English player to attract the modern media spotlight". He began his playing career at Scunthorpe United in 1968, before moving to Liverpool of Division One in 1971. At Liverpool, Keegan won three First Division titles, two UEFA Cups, one FA Cup and the European Cup. He also gained his first England cap in 1972, and moved to German top-flight club Hamburger SV in the summer of 1977. At Hamburg he was crowned European Footballer of the Year in both 1978 and 1979, won the Bundesliga title in 1978–79, and reached the European Cup final the following year. Keegan moved to Southampton that summer, and spent two seasons at the club before a transfer to second-tier Newcastle United in 1982. He helped Newcastle to promotion in his second season, and retired from football in 1984, having been capped 63 times for England, scoring 21 goals.

The full story of Kevin Keegan's "I will love it" rant in 1996 - SKY SPORTS MONDAY NIGHT FOOTBALL
"I've kept quiet but I'll tell you something. He went down in my estimation when he said that. We've not resorted to that.
"But I'll tell ya. You can tell him now, he'll be watching it. We're still fighting for this title and he's got to go to Middlesbrough and get something and...and I'll tell you honestly, I will love it if we beat them — LOVE IT!
But it really has got to me. I've voiced it live, not in front of the press or anywhere. I'm not even going to the press conference. But the battle is still on and Man United have not won this yet."
The Newcastle manager was responding to provocation from Sir Alex Ferguson. By January 1996, Newcastle had a 12 point lead at the top of the table and a first league trophy in almost 70 years looked on the horizon. Indeed, some bookmakers even paid out.
Newcastle struggled in the first few months of the new year while United were relentless, 1-0 wins courtesy of Cantona becoming laughably predictable. In early March, United went to Newcastle, Peter Schmeichel was outstanding, Cantona scored and the gap was cut to a single point. If this season ended with a whimper, not a bang then the latter stages of the 1995/96 season could not provide a more marked contrast. As United’s form started to look ominous, Ferguson decided to turn the screw by suggesting teams like Nottingham Forest might not try as hard against Newcastle as they did against his side. After victory at Leeds at the tail end of the season, Keegan launched into his infamous rant. But Keegan’s passionate outburst failed to spark his troops and the Red Devils went on to seal the championship by four points.
As recently as 2012, the infamous “love it” moment was voted the most memorable quote of the Premier League era & the interview is no.1 moment of manager madness.
