Chapter 38:1-30
Judah and Tamar
1. Judah commits to fulfilling a DUTY to Tamar.
Vs. 1-11
1a. The DUTY or obligation is the results of Judah’s growing family.
Things to note about Judah’s family
1) He married a Canaanite
Gen. 24:3, 28:1
Judah is the fourth-born son,
He now occupied the place of birthright by virtue of his older three brothers’ sins
(cf. 35:22; chap. 34),
2 Cor 6:14, Acts 26:18
2) Judah gives the oldest of his 3 sons in marriage.
1b. The DUTY or obligation will result God’s judgments.
But Judah’s sons were “wicked” (vv. 6, 10).
That term is used in Deut. 17:2-5 of Idolatry
It is used in Gen. 13:13 of the men of Sodom
Prov 15:26
1c. The DUTY or obligation is the marriage of Judah’s third son to Tamar.
2.Tamar will use a DISGUISE in order to deceive Judah.
Vs. 12-23
2a. The opportunity for this DISGUISE comes when Judah leaves for Timnah.
Tamar’s sees a window of opportunity.
Her father-in-law Judah became a widower.
Knowing Judah for the kind of man he was, she discerned that, he would be seeking
some female comfort.
Tamar also knew that it was sheep shearing time and that he would be visiting his
old friend Hirah.
2b. Tamar DISGUISES herself as a harlot hoping to produce a son for her departed
husband.
2c. Tamar’s DISGUISE allows her to negotiate a price and a pledge.
—in modern terms, he is giving her his Visa Card and drivers license.
3. Judah is forced to acknowledge the reason for Tamar’s DECEPTION.
Vs. 24-26
3a. Judah does not know he has been DECEIVED, therefore he is ready to execute Tamar.
Our sin always looks worse on someone else.
3b. Judah is given his pledge and now acknowledges the reason for the DECEPTION.
I love her line, "Please determine whose these are. . . “
Hey, Judah, maybe you can help me out here?
Does this Visa card and drivers license look familiar?
And then came his declaration,
Vs. 26 So Judah acknowledged them and said, "She has been more righteous
than I, because I did not give her to Shelah my son." And he never knew her
again.
Tamar was exalted. Judah was humbled. And this becomes the turning point in
Judah’s life.
Titus 2:11-13
Has Judah really repented?
In chapter 44, where Judah would act as a righteous man before Joseph, pleading
for the welfare of Benjamin and offering his life as a pledge to save his little half
brother.
In chapter 49 Jacob would confirm Judah as the scepter-bearing tribe through
which would come the one to whom “shall be the obedience of the peoples”
(49:10b).
4. Tamar will DELIVER twin sons
Vs. 27-30
4a. The twins will be named based on their DELIVERY.
Just as the Jacob narrative began with the story of twins wrestling in
their mother’s womb, so now at the end of the Jacob narrative there is a similar
struggle.
4b. The DELIVERY of the twins finds a mention in the New Testament.
Matt 1:1-6
Tamar is the first of five women in the genealogy of Christ as we have it in Matthew
1.
Notably absent are the great mothers of Israel: Sarah, Rebekah, Leah, and Rachel.
Thus Tamar and company declare that in Christ there is hope for the Gentile
nations.

The sons of Zerah were Zimri, Ethan, Heman, Calcol, and Dara — five of them in all. The son of Carmi was Achar, the troubler of Israel, who transgressed in the accursed thing. NKJV
Some Observations |
Jesus is from the line of Judah, hence His title, ‘The Lion of the Tribe of Judah.’ Two tings of note here: First that Jesus has rascals in His earthly family line. So do we all. It will be good for us to know the ‘why’s and wherefores’ of their demise so that we do not follow their bad ways. Secondly, note that unashamedly and without explanation the text tells us that it was God who killed Er for his wickedness. (By the Way, God also killed Onan for his selfish misuse and sexual abuse of his dead brothers wife.) God, killed the firstborn and the second born for their wickedness. It would appear that God is an advocate of capital punishment! Indeed, He is judge, jury and hangman. How do you like Him now?

God is not absent from the family nor the family line of peoples and especially His own redeemed and covenant people. Let this be both a right fear and an encouragement for you.

What Should We Learn from What the Bible Says About Tamar? How Is Understanding the Life of Tamar Valuable to Our Spiritual Growth?
There are two women named Tamar mentioned in Scripture. Both are tragic figures, women who were ruined by the neglect and abuse of close family members. Their stories seem to be included in Scripture for the purpose of providing historical and spiritual information about the Messianic line.
Jacob’s son Judah (patriarch of the line of Judah) had three sons: Er, Onan, and Shelah. A woman named Tamar married Er, but then Er died, leaving her a widow. Since it was required that the next of kin care for a brother’s widow, Tamar was given to Onan, but he also died. Shelah was still a boy and could not marry Tamar, so Judah asked her to return to her father’s house and wait until Shelah was grown up. However, once Shelah was old enough, Judah did not honor his promise. Tamar remained an unmarried widow. Tamar then went into town disguised as a prostitute, tricked Judah, and got him to sleep with her. She then became pregnant by Judah and bore twin sons named Perez and Zerah. The story is recorded in Genesis 38.
The other Tamar was King David’s daughter. She had a brother, Absalom, and a half-brother, Amnon. Amnon had an obsessive desire for his half-sister Tamar, and one day he pretended to be sick and called for her to come to him in his bedroom to help him. When she was there alone with him, he raped her. Unfortunately, though David was angry, he did not punish Amnon or require him to marry Tamar, so Absalom took it upon himself to murder Amnon in revenge (2 Samuel 13:1–22). Absalom’s anger and bitterness toward his father because of these events eventually led to his attempt to usurp his throne and to disgrace David by committing public immorality with his father’s concubines.
We would expect the twin sons of Judah’s incestuous union with his daughter-in-law to be outcasts, hidden away, or perhaps not even mentioned in the Bible. However, surprisingly, the Messianic line continues through Tamar’s son Perez. God did not provide a “cleaner” way to continue the line that would eventually include His Son. Perez was the ancestor of Jesus of Nazereth.
It is the same with King David’s story. Absalom’s anger and rejection of his father’s rule seem to have been born out of a festering bitterness toward David. Though Absalom was clearly in the wrong for the murder of Amnon, we sympathize with him, and we sympathize with his disgraced sister. Considering David’s own immorality and the murder he committed, it is easy to see why Absalom thought himself the better man. But, despite David’s faults, God still chose to continue the line of the Messiah through David rather than through Absalom.
Why are these unpleasant stories included in Scripture, and why are the people involved—people who hurt others, even their own family members—granted the privilege of being included in the Messianic line? It may be simply to show us that God’s purpose is accomplished despite man’s unrighteousness. In Hebrews 11 there is a long list of Old Testament people who are commended for their faith, and among them are many sinful people who did dreadful things. But, because they believed God, their faith was credited to them as righteousness (Genesis 15:6).

Eliab his firstborn; the second son was Abinadab, the third Shimea, 14 the fourth Nethanel, the fifth Raddai, 15 the sixth Ozem and the seventh David. 16 Their sisters were Zeruiah and Abigail. Zeruiah’s three sons were Abishai, Joab and Asahel. 17 Abigail was the mother of Amasa, whose father was Jether the Ishmaelite.
Caleb Son of Hezron
18 Caleb son of Hezron had children by his wife Azubah (and by Jerioth). These were her sons: Jesher, Shobab and Ardon. 19 When Azubah died, Caleb married Ephrath, who bore him Hur. 20 Hur was the father of Uri, and Uri the father of Bezalel.
21 Later, Hezron, when he was sixty years old, married the daughter of Makir the father of Gilead. He made love to her, and she bore him Segub. 22 Segub was the father of Jair, who controlled twenty-three towns in Gilead. 23 (But Geshur and Aram captured Havvoth Jair,[f] as well as Kenath with its surrounding settlements—sixty towns.) All these were descendants of Makir the father of Gilead.
24 After Hezron died in Caleb Ephrathah, Abijah the wife of Hezron bore him Ashhur the father[g] of Tekoa.
Jerahmeel Son of Hezron
25 The sons of Jerahmeel the firstborn of Hezron:
Ram his firstborn, Bunah, Oren, Ozem and[h] Ahijah. 26 Jerahmeel had another wife, whose name was Atarah; she was the mother of Onam.
27 The sons of Ram the firstborn of Jerahmeel:
Maaz, Jamin and Eker.
28 The sons of Onam:
Shammai and Jada.
The sons of Shammai:
Nadab and Abishur.
29 Abishur’s wife was named Abihail, who bore him Ahban and Molid.
30 The sons of Nadab:
Seled and Appaim. Seled died without children.

Their families increased greatly, 39 and they went to the outskirts of Gedor to the east of the valley in search of pasture for their flocks. 40 They found rich, good pasture, and the land was spacious, peaceful and quiet. Some Hamites had lived there formerly.
41 The men whose names were listed came in the days of Hezekiah king of Judah. They attacked the Hamites in their dwellings and also the Meunites who were there and completely destroyed [h] them, as is evident to this day. Then they settled in their place, because there was pasture for their flocks. 42 And five hundred of these Simeonites, led by Pelatiah, Neariah, Rephaiah and Uzziel, the sons of Ishi, invaded the hill country of Seir. 43 They killed the remaining Amalekites who had escaped, and they have lived there to this day.

(Heb. tamar), the date-palm characteristic of Palestine. It is described as flourishing (Psa_92:12), tall (Son_7:7), upright (Jer_10:5). Its branches are a symbol of victory (Rev_7:9).
If Tamar allows Judah to have children by another woman and refuses to give Onan to her, his house would come to be known as "The house of him that hath his shoe loosed" ruining his linage.
What if Judah takes a proper wife?
Taking a proper wife with Tamar not taking Shelah will not solve the linage issue. The problem is the first born son still goes into the linage and the line will end with "The house of him that hath his shoe loosed"

Tamar became sin who knew no sin. As we will see, she dressed AS a harlot. Judah went in unto to her, she bore his sin.

PASTOR TIM's NOTES: Chapter 38:1-30 Judah and Tamar 1. Judah commits to fulfilling a DUTY to Tamar. Vs. 1-11 1a. The DUTY or obligation is the results of Judah’s growing family. Things to note about Judah’s family 1) He married a Canaanite Gen. 24:3, 28:1 Judah is the fourth-born son, He now occupied the place of birthright by virtue of his older three brothers’ sins (cf. 35:22; chap. 34), 2 Cor 6:14, Acts 26:18 2) Judah gives the oldest of his 3 sons in marriage. 1b. The DUTY or obligation will result God’s judgments. But Judah’s sons were “wicked” (vv. 6, 10). That term is used in Deut. 17:2-5 of Idolatry It is used in Gen. 13:13 of the men of Sodom Prov 15:26 1c. The DUTY or obligation is the marriage of Judah’s third son to Tamar. 2.Tamar will use a DISGUISE in order to deceive Judah. Vs. 12-23 2a. The opportunity for this DISGUISE comes when Judah leaves for Timnah. Tamar’s sees a window of opportunity. Her father-in-law Judah became a widower. Knowing Judah for the kind of man he was, she discerned that, he would be seeking some female comfort. Tamar also knew that it was sheep shearing time and that he would be visiting his old friend Hirah. 2b. Tamar DISGUISES herself as a harlot hoping to produce a son for her departed husband. 2c. Tamar’s DISGUISE allows her to negotiate a price and a pledge. —in modern terms, he is giving her his Visa Card and drivers license. 3. Judah is forced to acknowledge the reason for Tamar’s DECEPTION. Vs. 24-26 3a. Judah does not know he has been DECEIVED, therefore he is ready to execute Tamar. Our sin always looks worse on someone else. 3b. Judah is given his pledge and now acknowledges the reason for the DECEPTION. I love her line, "Please determine whose these are. . . “ Hey, Judah, maybe you can help me out here? Does this Visa card and drivers license look familiar? And then came his declaration, Vs. 26 So Judah acknowledged them and said, "She has been more righteous than I, because I did not give her to Shelah my son." And he never knew her again. Tamar was exalted. Judah was humbled. And this becomes the turning point in Judah’s life. Titus 2:11-13 Has Judah really repented? In chapter 44, where Judah would act as a righteous man before Joseph, pleading for the welfare of Benjamin and offering his life as a pledge to save his little half brother. In chapter 49 Jacob would confirm Judah as the scepter-bearing tribe through which would come the one to whom “shall be the obedience of the peoples” (49:10b). 4. Tamar will DELIVER twin sons Vs. 27-30 4a. The twins will be named based on their DELIVERY. Just as the Jacob narrative began with the story of twins wrestling in their mother’s womb, so now at the end of the Jacob narrative there is a similar struggle. 4b. The DELIVERY of the twins finds a mention in the New Testament. Matt 1:1-6 Tamar is the first of five women in the genealogy of Christ as we have it in Matthew 1. Notably absent are the great mothers of Israel: Sarah, Rebekah, Leah, and Rachel. Thus Tamar and company declare that in Christ there is hope for the Gentile nations. And Tamar, his daughter-in-law, bore him Perez and Zerah. All the sons of Judah were five. The sons of Perez were Hezron and Hamul. The sons of Zerah were Zimri, Ethan, Heman, Calcol, and Dara — five of them in all. The son of Carmi was Achar, the troubler of Israel, who transgressed in the accursed thing. NKJV Some Observations | Jesus is from the line of Judah, hence His title, ‘The Lion of the Tribe of Judah.’ Two tings of note here: First that Jesus has rascals in His earthly family line. So do we all. It will be good for us to know the ‘why’s and wherefores’ of their demise so that we do not follow their bad ways. Secondly, note that unashamedly and without explanation the text tells us that it was God who killed Er for his wickedness. (By the Way, God also killed Onan for his selfish misuse and sexual abuse of his dead brothers wife.) God, killed the firstborn and the second born for their wickedness. It would appear that God is an advocate of capital punishment! Indeed, He is judge, jury and hangman. How do you like Him now? A Call To Action | God is not absent from the family nor the family line of peoples and especially His own redeemed and covenant people. Let this be both a right fear and an encouragement for you. -

What Should We Learn from What the Bible Says About Tamar? How Is Understanding the Life of Tamar Valuable to Our Spiritual Growth? There are two women named Tamar mentioned in Scripture. Both are tragic figures, women who were ruined by the neglect and abuse of close family members. Their stories seem to be included in Scripture for the purpose of providing historical and spiritual information about the Messianic line. Jacob’s son Judah (patriarch of the line of Judah) had three sons: Er, Onan, and Shelah. A woman named Tamar married Er, but then Er died, leaving her a widow. Since it was required that the next of kin care for a brother’s widow, Tamar was given to Onan, but he also died. Shelah was still a boy and could not marry Tamar, so Judah asked her to return to her father’s house and wait until Shelah was grown up. However, once Shelah was old enough, Judah did not honor his promise. Tamar remained an unmarried widow. Tamar then went into town disguised as a prostitute, tricked Judah, and got him to sleep with her. She then became pregnant by Judah and bore twin sons named Perez and Zerah. The story is recorded in Genesis 38. The other Tamar was King David’s daughter. She had a brother, Absalom, and a half-brother, Amnon. Amnon had an obsessive desire for his half-sister Tamar, and one day he pretended to be sick and called for her to come to him in his bedroom to help him. When she was there alone with him, he raped her. Unfortunately, though David was angry, he did not punish Amnon or require him to marry Tamar, so Absalom took it upon himself to murder Amnon in revenge (2 Samuel 13:1–22). Absalom’s anger and bitterness toward his father because of these events eventually led to his attempt to usurp his throne and to disgrace David by committing public immorality with his father’s concubines. We would expect the twin sons of Judah’s incestuous union with his daughter-in-law to be outcasts, hidden away, or perhaps not even mentioned in the Bible. However, surprisingly, the Messianic line continues through Tamar’s son Perez. God did not provide a “cleaner” way to continue the line that would eventually include His Son. Perez was the ancestor of Jesus of Nazereth. It is the same with King David’s story. Absalom’s anger and rejection of his father’s rule seem to have been born out of a festering bitterness toward David. Though Absalom was clearly in the wrong for the murder of Amnon, we sympathize with him, and we sympathize with his disgraced sister. Considering David’s own immorality and the murder he committed, it is easy to see why Absalom thought himself the better man. But, despite David’s faults, God still chose to continue the line of the Messiah through David rather than through Absalom. Why are these unpleasant stories included in Scripture, and why are the people involved—people who hurt others, even their own family members—granted the privilege of being included in the Messianic line? It may be simply to show us that God’s purpose is accomplished despite man’s unrighteousness. In Hebrews 11 there is a long list of Old Testament people who are commended for their faith, and among them are many sinful people who did dreadful things. It is described as flourishing (Psa_92:12), tall (Son_7:7), upright (Jer_10:5). Its branches are a symbol of victory (Rev_7:9). If Tamar allows Judah to have children by another woman and refuses to give Onan to her, his house would come to be known as "The house of him that hath his shoe loosed" ruining his linage. What if Judah takes a proper wife? Taking a proper wife with Tamar not taking Shelah will not solve the linage issue. The problem is the first born son still goes into the linage and the line will end with "The house of him that hath his shoe loosed" Tamar dressed as a harlot (she was not a harlot but dressed as a harlot) Rom_8:3 For what the law could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin, condemned sin in the flesh: Rom_8:4 That the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit. Judah does nothing but sin, it was Tamar, the righteousness of Tamar that brought about the the fulfillment of the word of God, It is not by us, not by the flesh, but by the Spirit. Tamar knew Judah ought not to have taken a Cannanite to wife as the promised seed was not to come from that line. Tamar became sin who knew no sin. As we will see, she dressed AS a harlot. Judah and Tamar
1. Judah commits to fulfilling a DUTY to Tamar.
Vs. 1-11

Her father-in-law Judah became a widower.
Knowing Judah for the kind of man he was, she discerned that, he would be seeking
some female comfort.
Tamar also knew that it was sheep shearing time and that he would be visiting his
old friend Hirah.
2b. Tamar DISGUISES herself as a harlot hoping to produce a son for her departed
husband.
2c. Tamar’s DISGUISE allows her to negotiate a price and a pledge.
—in modern terms, he is giving her his Visa Card and drivers license.
3. Judah is forced to acknowledge the reason for Tamar’s DECEPTION.
Vs. 24-26
3a. Judah does not know he has been DECEIVED, therefore he is ready to execute Tamar.
Our sin always looks worse on someone else.
3b. Judah is given his pledge and now acknowledges the reason for the DECEPTION.
I love her line, "Please determine whose these are. . . “
Hey, Judah, maybe you can help me out here?
Does this Visa card and drivers license look familiar?
And then came his declaration,
Vs. 26 So Judah acknowledged them and said, "She has been more righteous
than I, because I did not give her to Shelah my son." And he never knew her
again.
Tamar was exalted. Judah was humbled. And this becomes the turning point in
Judah’s life.
Titus 2:11-13
Has Judah really repented?
In chapter 44, where Judah would act as a righteous man before Joseph, pleading
for the welfare of Benjamin and offering his life as a pledge to save his little half
brother.
In chapter 49 Jacob would confirm Judah as the scepter-bearing tribe through
which would come the one to whom “shall be the obedience of the peoples”
(49:10b).
4. Tamar will DELIVER twin sons
Vs. 27-30
4a. The twins will be named based on their DELIVERY.
Just as the Jacob narrative began with the story of twins wrestling in
their mother’s womb, so now at the end of the Jacob narrative there is a similar
struggle.
4b. The DELIVERY of the twins finds a mention in the New Testament.
Matt 1:1-6
Tamar is the first of five women in the genealogy of Christ as we have it in Matthew
1.
Notably absent are the great mothers of Israel: Sarah, Rebekah, Leah, and Rachel.

Some Observations |
Jesus is from the line of Judah, hence His title, ‘The Lion of the Tribe of Judah.’ Two tings of note here: First that Jesus has rascals in His earthly family line. So do we all. It will be good for us to know the ‘why’s and wherefores’ of their demise so that we do not follow their bad ways. Secondly, note that unashamedly and without explanation the text tells us that it was God who killed Er for his wickedness. (By the Way, God also killed Onan for his selfish misuse and sexual abuse of his dead brothers wife.) God, killed the firstborn and the second born for their wickedness. It would appear that God is an advocate of capital punishment! Indeed, He is judge, jury and hangman. How do you like Him now?

God is not absent from the family nor the family line of peoples and especially His own redeemed and covenant people. Let this be both a right fear and an encouragement for you.

What Should We Learn from What the Bible Says About Tamar? How Is Understanding the Life of Tamar Valuable to Our Spiritual Growth?
There are two women named Tamar mentioned in Scripture. Both are tragic figures, women who were ruined by the neglect and abuse of close family members. Their stories seem to be included in Scripture for the purpose of providing historical and spiritual information about the Messianic line.
Jacob’s son Judah (patriarch of the line of Judah) had three sons: Er, Onan, and Shelah. A woman named Tamar married Er, but then Er died, leaving her a widow. Since it was required that the next of kin care for a brother’s widow, Tamar was given to Onan, but he also died. Shelah was still a boy and could not marry Tamar, so Judah asked her to return to her father’s house and wait until Shelah was grown up. However, once Shelah was old enough, Judah did not honor his promise. Tamar remained an unmarried widow. Tamar then went into town disguised as a prostitute, tricked Judah, and got him to sleep with her. She then became pregnant by Judah and bore twin sons named Perez and Zerah. The story is recorded in Genesis 38.
The other Tamar was King David’s daughter. She had a brother, Absalom, and a half-brother, Amnon. Amnon had an obsessive desire for his half-sister Tamar, and one day he pretended to be sick and called for her to come to him in his bedroom to help him. When she was there alone with him, he raped her. Unfortunately, though David was angry, he did not punish Amnon or require him to marry Tamar, so Absalom took it upon himself to murder Amnon in revenge (2 Samuel 13:1–22). Absalom’s anger and bitterness toward his father because of these events eventually led to his attempt to usurp his throne and to disgrace David by committing public immorality with his father’s concubines.
We would expect the twin sons of Judah’s incestuous union with his daughter-in-law to be outcasts, hidden away, or perhaps not even mentioned in the Bible. However, surprisingly, the Messianic line continues through Tamar’s son Perez. God did not provide a “cleaner” way to continue the line that would eventually include His Son. Perez was the ancestor of Jesus of Nazereth.
It is the same with King David’s story. Absalom’s anger and rejection of his father’s rule seem to have been born out of a festering bitterness toward David. Though Absalom was clearly in the wrong for the murder of Amnon, we sympathize with him, and we sympathize with his disgraced sister. Considering David’s own immorality and the murder he committed, it is easy to see why Absalom thought himself the better man. But, despite David’s faults, God still chose to continue the line of the Messiah through David rather than through Absalom.
Why are these unpleasant stories included in Scripture, and why are the people involved—people who hurt others, even their own family members—granted the privilege of being included in the Messianic line? It may be simply to show us that God’s purpose is accomplished despite man’s unrighteousness. In Hebrews 11 there is a long list of Old Testament people who are commended for their faith, and among them are many sinful people who did dreadful things. But, because they believed God, their faith was credited to them as righteousness (Genesis 15:6).

41 The men whose names were listed came in the days of Hezekiah king of Judah. They attacked the Hamites in their dwellings and also the Meunites who were there and completely destroyed [h] them, as is evident to this day. In Genesis 38 we learn more about how Israel is going to end up in Egypt in fulfillment of Genesis 15:13-14 and Genesis 12:1-2. This is a story of realism and about God's amazing Grace. Surprising providence is the point of this story in that God providentially overrules all things to fulfill his purposes and promises to his people. We fine also about that the through Perez is the line of succession of the line of Judah not Zerek.
We can also look at this chapter as a breakaway from the story of Joseph. It is a "meanwhile back at the ranch moment" that Moses uses to compare Jacob and Joseph. It heightens tension and give a backdrop to measure Joesph character in the rest of Genesis. While this material can bee seen as "R rated" it is also not gratuitously scandalous. It has a wholesome purposes for recording this depravity. It shows us that God works through people who are in need of the grace of God's active providence.
We first see the need of grace of God's active providence in Jacob's family. They are messed up. There is a search for a wife like was don for Esau in Genesis 26:34-35. But this search was not among God's people. The Attitude here is very much like that of Sampson (Judges 14:1-3).
Jacob had 3 sons: Er, Onan, and Shelah. God takes Er's life because of the moral decline in the life of Judah's family. Onan should follow the leverite marriage laws (Deut. 24:5-10, Ruth 4), even though this law naturally brings conflict because the Brother here is to gain an inheritance if he does not follow and make a child with his brother's wife after his death. Onan is also killed and Jacob sends Tamar away to her father's house until Shelah is old enough (or so he says). We see in this family the thread of grace in God working out his active providence. Everything is not fine or dandy but God grace is given to those who are messed up and in need. Do you long for everything to be fine or for God to be at work. Sometimes those two desires are not compatible.
We secondly see the need of grace of God's active providence in Worldly People. The marriages here are intermingled marriages against God's revealed moral will but it show the need of God grace. Tamar had a right to marry Shelah, but Judah was withholding him from her. In this story the morality of Tamar is not commented because the focus is on Joseph's immoral life. He goes and gets a temple prostitute (or so he things), who is really Tamar. Tamar asks for some pledge of signet , cord and his staff. Joseph was to at peace with the world system and culture of the day. He things that he is innocent and when he confronts Tamar with her adultery he finds out that she is more righteous than he is. If we live in a culture where we are accepted and at peace with there is a danger of being sucked into their cultural values and rejecting God's values. Don't intermingle with those who don't where your faith.

3 In the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar—when Pontius Pilate was governor of Judea, Herod tetrarch of Galilee, his brother Philip tetrarch of Iturea and Traconitis, and Lysanias tetrarch of Abilene— 2 during the high-priesthood of Annas and Caiaphas, the word of God came to John son of Zechariah in the wilderness. 3 He went into all the country around the Jordan, preaching a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. 4 As it is written in the book of the words of Isaiah the prophet:
“A voice of one calling in the wilderness,
‘Prepare the way for the Lord,
make straight paths for him.
5 Every valley shall be filled in,
every mountain and hill made low.
The crooked roads shall become straight,
the rough ways smooth.
6 And all people will see God’s salvation.’”[a]
7 John said to the crowds coming out to be baptized by him, “You brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the coming wrath? 8 Produce fruit in keeping with repentance. And do not begin to say to yourselves, ‘We have Abraham as our father.’ For I tell you that out of these stones God can raise up children for Abraham. 9 The ax is already at the root of the trees, and every tree that does not produce good fruit will be cut down and thrown into the fire.”
10 “What should we do then?” the crowd asked.
11 John answered, “Anyone who has two shirts should share with the one who has none, and anyone who has food should do the same.”
12 Even tax collectors came to be baptized. “Teacher,” they asked, “what should we do?”
13 “Don’t collect any more than you are required to,” he told them.
14 Then some soldiers asked him, “And what should we do?”
He replied, “Don’t extort money and don’t accuse people falsely—be content with your pay.”
15 The people were waiting expectantly and were all wondering in their hearts if John might possibly be the Messiah. 16 John answered them all, “I baptize you with[b] water. But one who is more powerful than I will come, the straps of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie. He will baptize you with[c] the Holy Spirit and fire. 17 His winnowing fork is in his hand to clear his threshing floor and to gather the wheat into his barn, but he will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire.” 18 And with many other words John exhorted the people and proclaimed the good news to them.
19 But when John rebuked Herod the tetrarch because of his marriage to Herodias, his brother’s wife, and all the other evil things he had done, 20 Herod added this to them all: He locked John up in prison.

We all have seen and experienced the sacrament of baptism in our lives. Perhaps we witnessed it with someone in our family, maybe with one of our friends, or maybe even ourselves. What does it all mean though? Is there a right or wrong way to do it? Why did Jesus have to get baptized if He had no sin? Many questions bubble to the surface when it comes to this ancient practice. We have a question for you first, can we see some ID?

What does it all mean though? Is there a right or wrong way to do it? Why did Jesus have to get baptized if He had no sin? Many questions bubble to the surface when it comes to this ancient practice. We have a question for you first, can we see some ID?
Luke 3:21-4:2
When all the people were being baptized, Jesus was baptized too. And as he was praying, heaven was opened and the Holy Spirit descended on him in bodily form like a dove. And a voice came from heaven: “You are my Son, whom I love; with you I am well pleased.” Now Jesus himself was about thirty years old when he began his ministry. He was the son, so it was thought, of Joseph,

the son of Levi, the son of Melki,
the son of Jannai, the son of Joseph,
the son of Mattathias, the son of Amos,
the son of Nahum, the son of Esli,

Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, left the Jordan and was led by the Spirit into the wilderness, where for forty days he was tempted by the devil. He ate nothing during those days, and at the end of them he was hungry.

And Israel took his journey with all that he had, and came to Beersheba, and offered sacrifices unto the God of his father Isaac. 2 And God spake unto Israel in the visions of the night, and said, Jacob, Jacob. John the Baptist Preaches
1 Now in the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar, when Pontius Pilate was governor of Judea, and Herod was tetrarch of Galilee, and his brother Philip was tetrarch of the region of Ituraea and Trachonitis, and Lysanias was tetrarch of Abilene, 2 in the high priesthood of Annas and Caiaphas, the word of God came to John, the son of Zacharias, in the wilderness. 3 And he came into all the district around the Jordan, preaching a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins;
4 as it is written in the book of the words of Isaiah the prophet,
"The voice of one crying in the wilderness,
'Make ready the way of the Lord,
Make His paths straight.
5 'Every ravine will be filled,
And every mountain and hill will be brought low;
The crooked will become straight,
And the rough roads smooth;
6 And all flesh will see the salvation of God.'"
7 So he began saying to the crowds who were going out to be baptized by him, "You brood of vipers, who warned you to flee from the wrath to come? 8 Therefore bear fruits in keeping with repentance, and do not begin to say to yourselves, 'We have Abraham for our father,' for I say to you that from these stones God is able to raise up children to Abraham. 9 Indeed the axe is already laid at the root of the trees; so every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire."
10 And the crowds were questioning him, saying, "Then what shall we do?" 11 And he would answer and say to them, "The man who has two tunics is to share with him who has none; and he who has food is to do likewise." 12 And some tax collectors also came to be baptized, and they said to him, "Teacher, what shall we do?" 13 And he said to them, "Collect no more than what you have been ordered to." 14 Some soldiers were questioning him, saying, "And what about us, what shall we do?" And he said to them, "Do not take money from anyone by force, or accuse anyone falsely, and be content with your wages."
15 Now while the people were in a state of expectation and all were wondering in their hearts about John, as to whether he was the Christ, 16 John answered and said to them all, "As for me, I baptize you with water; but One is coming who is mightier than I, and I am not fit to untie the thong of His sandals; He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. 17 His winnowing fork is in His hand to thoroughly clear His threshing floor, and to gather the wheat into His barn; but He will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire."
18 So with many other exhortations he preached the gospel to the people. 19 But when Herod the tetrarch was reprimanded by him because of Herodias, his brother's wife, and because of all the wicked things which Herod had done, 20 Herod also added this to them all: he locked John up in prison.
