Baltasar Kormákur, director, producer and actor. Among his work are: "101 Reykjavik", "2 guns", "Stormy Weather" and "The Deep". He owned the bar Kaffibarinn in Reykjavik with Damon Albarn of Blur. Kormákur said that he was there so much that it became cheaper to own the bar instead. He is also the first receiver of Göteborg International Film Festival Nordic Honorary Dragon Award. This price goes to a Nordic filmmaker whose work deserves extra attention, now and always!

While at this year’s CinemaCon, I landed an exclusive interview with director Baltasar Kormákur. He was in Las Vegas to accept the award for International Filmmaker of the Year from CinemaCon and also to promote his upcoming Universal movie Everest. If you’re not familiar with the film, it’s based on a true story and it “documents the awe-inspiring journey of two different expeditions challenged beyond their limits by one of the fiercest snowstorms ever encountered by mankind.” Loaded with an all-star cast featuring Jason Clarke, Josh Brolin, John Hawkes, Jake Gyllenhaal, Sam Worthington, Martin Henderson, Emily Watson, Michael Kelly, Robin Wright, and Keira Knightley, Everest hits theaters September 18th and is one of my most anticipated films of the year after seeing the first footage.
Kormákur and I sat down for an interview shortly after he won his award. He talked about where he’s at in post-production, the cast, the challenges of shooting on location, if Everest could premier at TIFF or Telluride, test screenings, future projects like his Viking movie (which could be called Vikingur), and a lot more.

Now playing in theaters is director Baltasar Kormakur’s survival pic Everest. Inspired by real events and written by Mark Medoff (Children of a Lesser God) and Simon Beaufoy (Slumdog MIllionaire), the movie focuses on two different expeditions that struggle to survive while climbing the world’s tallest mountain. The many attempts to summit Everest have been captured on film a few times before, but with this movie Kormakur aims to put the audience smack dab in the middle of the event with a visceral approach to the story. The film stars Josh Brolin, Jason Clarke, Jake Gyllenhaal, John Hawkes, Sam Worthington, Robin Wright, Emily Watson, and Keira Knightley.
Recently I landed an extended video interview with Baltasar Kormakur. He talked about the chaotic shoot and focus on practical effects, what the insurance company would allow them to do, the second unit crew he sent to Mount Everest to shoot, deleted scenes, how he wanted to make a movie with the intimacy of an indie and the scale of a blockbuster, future projects, and a lot more.
Finally, before getting to the interview, if you can see Everest in 3D I recommend doing it. The format (which is sometimes crap) works extremely well for this film and is definitely worth the extra money.

Baltasar Kormákur Baltasarsson (born 27 February 1966) is an Icelandic actor, theater and film director, and film producer. He is known professionally as Baltasar Kormákur.
He is best known for directing the films 101 Reykjavík, Hafið, A Little Trip to Heaven (starring Julia Stiles and Forest Whitaker), and a film based on the book Mýrin (Jar City) by Arnaldur Indriðason. His father is the Spanish painter Baltasar Samper.
With his movie Mýrin, he won the Crystal Globe award at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival in 2007.

While at this year’s CinemaCon, I landed an exclusive interview with director Baltasar Kormákur. He was in Las Vegas to accept the award for International Filmmaker of the Year from CinemaCon and also to promote his upcoming Universal movie Everest. If you’re not familiar with the film, it’s based on a true story and it “documents the awe-inspiring journey of two different expeditions challenged beyond their limits by one of the fiercest snowstorms ever encountered by mankind.” Loaded with an all-star cast featuring Jason Clarke, Josh Brolin, John Hawkes, Jake Gyllenhaal, Sam Worthington, Martin Henderson, Emily Watson, Michael Kelly, Robin Wright, and Keira Knightley, Everest hits theaters September 18th and is one of my most anticipated films of the year after seeing the first footage.
Kormákur and I sat down for an interview shortly after he won his award. He talked about where he’s at in post-production, the cast, the challenges of shooting on location, if Everest could premier at TIFF or Telluride, test screenings, future projects like his Viking movie (which could be called Vikingur), and a lot more.

Recently I landed an extended video interview with Baltasar Kormakur. He talked about the chaotic shoot and focus on practical effects, what the insurance company would allow them to do, the second unit crew he sent to Mount Everest to shoot, deleted scenes, how he wanted to make a movie with the intimacy of an indie and the scale of a blockbuster, future projects, and a lot more.
Finally, before getting to the interview, if you can see Everest in 3D I recommend doing it. The format (which is sometimes crap) works extremely well for this film and is definitely worth the extra money.

To change this, the Sports-Elf arrives, and through his positive attitude, driving magnetism and by not taking no for an answer, he persuades the inhabitants to change their destructive lifstyle.
