Marcel Theroux travels across Japan in an attempt to understand Wabi Sabi, a theory of Japanese aesthetics in which imperfection and transience are the touchstone of beauty.
Eisuke Tachikawa launched his Wiki web project OLIVE just forty hours after the Great East Japan Earthquake struck. The crowdsourcing database gathered and shared DIY tips and tutorials from all over the planet to aid the disaster's survivors. The info was later published as the OLIVE Handbook.
This altruistic activity should come as no surprise: While at graduate school at Keio University in 2006, Eisuke started his interdisciplinary design agency NOSIGNER, whose avowed purpose is to identify and solve problems. NOSIGNER has received scores of international design prizes, including a Platinum Pentaward in 2009, a Design for Asia Award in 2011, and a Smart Design Award in 2012.
Eisuke himself was named one of the fifty top designers in the ADC's Young Guns competition in 2009. Through his Grammar of Design workshop, he hopes to create a future in which everyone can design.

Yuriko Saito, born and raised in Japan, received her BA in philosophy from International Christian University (Tokyo, Japan) and Ph. D. in philosophy from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. She has been teaching at the Rhode Island School of Design since 1981, where she received the Frazier Award for Excellence in Teaching in 1999. Her research area is aesthetics with a focus on everyday aesthetics, environmental aesthetics, and Japanese aesthetics. She teaches these subjects regularly, as well as introductory courses in philosophy. Her work and what she gained from teaching at RISD resulted in Everyday Aesthetics, recently (2008) published by Oxford University Press.
Yuriko Saito was a Keynote Speaker at the IAFOR North American Conference on Arts & Humanities 2014 (NACAH2014). In her Keynote Presentation she explains the importance of aesthetics and how they impact on our everyday lives.
In light of many serious problems that plague today’s world, aesthetic concerns may appear to be rather inconsequential. In particular, the aesthetics of everyday life regarding objects of daily use, familiar environments, and regular chores may seem trivial and insignificant. However, Yuriko Saito argues that our aesthetic tastes, preferences, and judgments regarding everyday life have a surprisingly, though often unrecognized, power to affect the quality of life and the state of the world, both positively and negatively. Saito presents this power of the aesthetic by exploring everyday aesthetics’ contribution to the promotion of nationalism, environmental consequences, and the cultivation of moral virtues. Her overall thesis is that all of us are implicated in the collective and cumulative project of world-making as citizens, consumers, and community members, although many of us are not professional world-makers such as architects, designers, manufacturers, and policy-makers. As such, there is a need to cultivate aesthetic literacy and vigilance, as well as strategies to harness the power of the aesthetic toward better world-making.

This is the first comprehensive exhibition devoted to the arts of the samurai. Arms and armor is the principal focus, bringing together the finest examples of armor, swords and sword mountings, archery equipment and firearms, equestrian equipment, banners, surcoats, and related accessories of rank such as fans and batons. Drawn entirely from public and private collections in Japan, the majority of objects date from the rise of the samurai in the late Heian period, ca. 1156, through the early modern Edo period, ending in 1868, when samurai culture was abolished. The martial skills and daily life of the samurai, their governing lords, the daimyo, and the ruling shoguns will also be evoked through the presence of painted scrolls and screens depicting battles and martial sports, castles, and portraits of individual warriors. The exhibition concludes with a related exhibition documenting the recent restoration in Japan of a selection of arms and armor from the Metropolitan Museums permanent collection. This is the first exhibition ever devoted to the subject of Japanese arms and armor conservation.

The modern study of a Japanese aesthetics in the Western sense only started a little over two hundred years ago. But, by the term Japanese aesthetic, we tend to mean not this modern study, but a set of ancient ideals that include wabi (transient and stark beauty), sabi (the beauty of natural patina and aging), and yûgen (profound grace and subtlety). These ideals, and others, underpin much of Japanese cultural and aesthetic norms on what is considered tasteful or beautiful. Thus, while seen as a philosophy in Western societies, the concept of aesthetics in Japan is seen as an integral part of daily life. Japanese aesthetics now encompass a variety of ideals; some of these are traditional while others are modern and sometimes influenced from other cultures.
Shinto is considered to be at the fountain-head of Japanese culture. With its emphasis on the wholeness of nature and character in ethics, and its celebration of the landscape, it sets the tone for Japanese aesthetics. Nevertheless, Japanese aesthetic ideals are most heavily influenced by Japanese Buddhism. In the Buddhist tradition, all things are considered as either evolving from or dissolving into nothingness. This 'nothingness' is not empty space. It is, rather, a space of potentiality. If we take the seas as representing potential then each thing is like a wave arising from it and returning to it. There are no permanent waves. There are no perfect waves. At no point is a wave complete, even at its peak. Nature is seen as a dynamic whole that is to be admired and appreciated. This appreciation of nature has been fundamental to many Japanese aesthetic ideals, "arts," and other cultural elements. In this respect, the notion of "art" (or its conceptual equivalent) is also quite different from Western traditions (see Japanese art).

All Bodhisattvas have confidence in the Buddhadharma, whether it is the teaching of the Sravaka or the Bodhisattva Vehicles. All sentient beings have the same Dharma nature as the Buddhas and, therefore, may be termed Icchantika with good roots. In short, those who depend on hearing the Teaching to attain Awakening are termed Sravakas. Those who contemplate the twelve nidanas of dependent origination and thus win Awakening are termed Pratyekabuddhas. Most Dharma students are awakened by Dharma teaching but not awakened directly to Mind. Practicing for many kalpas, they still do not attain Original Buddha. Just as a dog is distracted by a clod of earth thrown at him, so we forget Original Mind. However, if one can attain silent and unspoken understanding, one knows that because the mind is Dharma it is, therefore, not necessary to seek Dharma. Most people's minds are hindered by the mind-realms and only perceive the Buddha principle polluted by and mixed with phenomena. Thus, they are always trying to escape the mind-realms and calm the mind. To attain Pure Mind, they attempt to eradicate phenomena and keep the principle, not realizing that the mind-realms are hindered by Mind and that phenomena are hindered by the principle. Without mind, the realms are empty; when the principle is tranquil, so are phenomena. One should not turn the Mind upside down for some personal use. People do not really want to realize the state of being "Without mind", fearing that if they fail at their attempts at cultivation a one-sided emptiness would result. Foolish people only try to wipe out phenomena but do not wipe out mind. The wise man wipes out the mind and does not bother with phenomena. The mind of the Bodhisattva is void, having abandoned all and grasping neither bliss nor merit. There are three degrees of renunciation in this practice. The highest degree is the renunciation of body and mind through the perception of everything, inside and out, as void, there being nothing to obtain and nothing to grasp. Depending on the limits of his strength of belief and committment to practice, one makes the great renunciation of negative and positive, existence and non-existence. Following this realization of truth with practice and non-expectation of reward or personal benefit is the middle degree of renunciation. The superior degree of renunciation is compared to holding a torch in front of oneself, being neither deluded nor awakened. The middle renunciation is compared to holding the torch at one's side; it is sometimes light and sometimes dark. The lowest renunciation is similar to holding the torch at one's back, thus being unable to see a pit or trap in front of one. The mind of the Bodhisattva is void, having abandoned all things. Past-mind not grasping is past renunciation; present-mind not grasping is present renunciation; future-mind not grasping is future renunciation.

NOSIGNER has received scores of international design prizes, including a Platinum Pentaward in 2009, a Design for Asia Award in 2011, and a Smart Design Award in 2012.

She teaches these subjects regularly, as well as introductory courses in philosophy. Her work and what she gained from teaching at RISD resulted in Everyday Aesthetics, recently (2008) published by Oxford University Press.
Yuriko Saito was a Keynote Speaker at the IAFOR North American Conference on Arts & Humanities 2014 (NACAH2014). In her Keynote Presentation she explains the importance of aesthetics and how they impact on our everyday lives.
In light of many serious problems that plague today’s world, aesthetic concerns may appear to be rather inconsequential. In particular, the aesthetics of everyday life regarding objects of daily use, familiar environments, and regular chores may seem trivial and insignificant. However, Yuriko Saito argues that our aesthetic tastes, preferences, and judgments regarding everyday life have a surprisingly, though often unrecognized, power to affect the quality of life and the state of the world, both positively and negatively. Saito presents this power of the aesthetic by exploring everyday aesthetics’ contribution to the promotion of nationalism, environmental consequences, and the cultivation of moral virtues. Her overall thesis is that all of us are implicated in the collective and cumulative project of world-making as citizens, consumers, and community members, although many of us are not professional world-makers such as architects, designers, manufacturers, and policy-makers. As such, there is a need to cultivate aesthetic literacy and vigilance, as well as strategies to harness the power of the aesthetic toward better world-making.

Most people's minds are hindered by the mind-realms and only perceive the Buddha principle polluted by and mixed with phenomena. Thus, they are always trying to escape the mind-realms and calm the mind. To attain Pure Mind, they attempt to eradicate phenomena and keep the principle, not realizing that the mind-realms are hindered by Mind and that phenomena are hindered by the principle. Without mind, the realms are empty; when the principle is tranquil, so are phenomena. One should not turn the Mind upside down for some personal use. People do not really want to realize the state of being "Without mind", fearing that if they fail at their attempts at cultivation a one-sided emptiness would result. Foolish people only try to wipe out phenomena but do not wipe out mind. The wise man wipes out the mind and does not bother with phenomena. The mind of the Bodhisattva is void, having abandoned all and grasping neither bliss nor merit.
There are three degrees of renunciation in this practice. The highest degree is the renunciation of body and mind through the perception of everything, inside and out, as void, there being nothing to obtain and nothing to grasp. Depending on the limits of his strength of belief and committment to practice, one makes the great renunciation of negative and positive, existence and non-existence. Following this realization of truth with practice and non-expectation of reward or personal benefit is the middle degree of renunciation. The superior degree of renunciation is compared to holding a torch in front of oneself, being neither deluded nor awakened. The middle renunciation is compared to holding the torch at one's side; it is sometimes light and sometimes dark. The lowest renunciation is similar to holding the torch at one's back, thus being unable to see a pit or trap in front of one. The mind of the Bodhisattva is void, having abandoned all things. Past-mind not grasping is past renunciation; present-mind not grasping is present renunciation; future-mind not grasping is future renunciation.

All Bodhisattvas have confidence in the Buddhadharma, whether it is the teaching of the Sravaka or the Bodhisattva Vehicles. All sentient beings have the same Dharma nature as the Buddhas and, therefore, may be termed Icchantika with good roots. In short, those who depend on hearing the Teaching to attain Awakening are termed Sravakas. Those who contemplate the twelve nidanas of dependent origination and thus win Awakening are termed Pratyekabuddhas. Most Dharma students are awakened by Dharma teaching but not awakened directly to Mind. Practicing for many kalpas, they still do not attain Original Buddha. Just as a dog is distracted by a clod of earth thrown at him, so we forget Original Mind. However, if one can attain silent and unspoken understanding, one knows that because the mind is Dharma it is, therefore, not necessary to seek Dharma.
Most people's minds are hindered by the mind-realms and only perceive the Buddha principle polluted by and mixed with phenomena. Thus, they are always trying to escape the mind-realms and calm the mind. To attain Pure Mind, they attempt to eradicate phenomena and keep the principle, not realizing that the mind-realms are hindered by Mind and that phenomena are hindered by the principle. Without mind, the realms are empty; when the principle is tranquil, so are phenomena. One should not turn the Mind upside down for some personal use. People do not really want to realize the state of being "Without mind", fearing that if they fail at their attempts at cultivation a one-sided emptiness would result. Foolish people only try to wipe out phenomena but do not wipe out mind. The wise man wipes out the mind and does not bother with phenomena. The mind of the Bodhisattva is void, having abandoned all and grasping neither bliss nor merit.
There are three degrees of renunciation in this practice. The highest degree is the renunciation of body and mind through the perception of everything, inside and out, as void, there being nothing to obtain and nothing to grasp. Depending on the limits of his strength of belief and committment to practice, one makes the great renunciation of negative and positive, existence and non-existence. Following this realization of truth with practice and non-expectation of reward or personal benefit is the middle degree of renunciation. The superior degree of renunciation is compared to holding a torch in front of oneself, being neither deluded nor awakened. The middle renunciation is compared to holding the torch at one's side; it is sometimes light and sometimes dark. The lowest renunciation is similar to holding the torch at one's back, thus being unable to see a pit or trap in front of one. The mind of the Bodhisattva is void, having abandoned all things. Past-mind not grasping is past renunciation; present-mind not grasping is present renunciation; future-mind not grasping is future renunciation.

After a few weeks of playing through the Japanese version extensively, and after a few days of capturing and editing footage, I have finally created an exhaustive video detailing the differences between Japanese MM v1.1 and US MM.
Due to the sheer number of differences, I decided to split the videos into thematic parts. This part details the changes to the aesthetics of MM, the changes that alter the sounds and sights of the game. Though some differences are difficult to notice, most can be easily picked out with an observant eye. I would HIGHLY recommend turning on both Annotations and the Interactive Transcript. The Interactive Transcript, in particular, is invaluable tool, as it lists every version difference in text and highlights the difference that you are currently watching. Annotations are used to explain some things visually and also are used to give credit to the people of ZSR who have discovered other differences; this video would not be as complete without their commendable effort.
