The Shin-Yokohama Raumen Museum (新横浜ラーメン博物館, Shin-Yokohama Rāmen Hakubutsukan) is a food amusement park located in the Shin-Yokohama district of Kōhoku-ku, Yokohama, Japan.
The museum is devoted to the Japanese ramen noodle soup and features a large recreation of Tokyo in the year 1958, the year instant noodles were invented. Within the museum are branches of famous ramen restaurants from Kyushu to Hokkaido. The list includes Ide Shoten, Shinasobaya, Keyaki, Ryushanhai, Hachiya, Fukuchan, and Komurasaki. In 2013, the museum added American restaurant Ikemen Hollywood to the museum's restaurants, and have since decided to close the branch in June 2014.
Along with restaurants, there is an old-style bar called 35 Knots, where visitors can smoke, and a few other places to buy traditional snacks and food. On the ground floor level, there is a souvenir shop selling ramen bowls, cooking utilities and customisable instant-ramen packages.
The museum opened on March 3, 1994.
Ramen (/ˈrɑːmən/) (ラーメン, rāmen, IPA: [ɽäꜜːmeɴ]) is a Japanese noodle soup dish. It consists of Chinese-style wheat noodles served in a meat- or (occasionally) fish-based broth, often flavored with soy sauce or miso, and uses toppings such as sliced pork (チャーシュー, chāshū), dried seaweed (海苔, nori), menma (メンマ, menma), and green onions (葱, negi). Nearly every region in Japan has its own variation of ramen, from the tonkotsu (pork bone broth) ramen of Kyushu to the miso ramen of Hokkaido.
The origin of ramen is unclear. Some sources say it is of Chinese origin. Other sources say it was invented in Japan in the early 20th century.
The name ramen is the Japanese pronunciation of the Chinese lamian (拉麺). Until the 1950s, ramen was called shina soba (支那そば, literally "Chinese soba") but today chūka soba (中華そば, also meaning "Chinese soba") or just Ramen (ラーメン) are more common, as the word "支那" (shina, meaning "China") has acquired a pejorative connotation.
By 1900, restaurants serving Chinese cuisine from Canton and Shanghai offered a simple ramen dish of noodles (cut rather than hand-pulled), a few toppings, and a broth flavored with salt and pork bones. Many Chinese living in Japan also pulled portable food stalls, selling ramen and gyōza dumplings to workers. By the mid-1900s, these stalls used a type of a musical horn called a charumera (チャルメラ, from the Portuguese charamela) to advertise their presence, a practice some vendors still retain via a loudspeaker and a looped recording. By the early Shōwa period, ramen had become a popular dish when eating out.

Japan (i/dʒəˈpæn/; Japanese: 日本 Nippon [nip̚põ̞ɴ] or Nihon [nihõ̞ɴ]; formally 日本国
Nippon-koku or Nihon-koku, "State of Japan") is an island country in East Asia. Located in the Pacific Ocean, it lies to the east of the Sea of Japan, the East China Sea, China, North Korea, South Korea and Russia, stretching from the Sea of Okhotsk in the north to the East China Sea and Taiwan in the south. The kanji that make up Japan's name mean "sun origin", and Japan is often called the "Land of the Rising Sun".
Japan is a stratovolcanic archipelago of 6,852 islands. The four largest are Honshu, Hokkaido, Kyushu, and Shikoku, which make up about ninety-seven percent of Japan's land area. Japan's population of 126 million is the world's tenth largest. Approximately 9.1 million people live in Tokyo, the capital city of Japan, which is the sixth largest city proper in the OECD. The Greater Tokyo Area, which includes Tokyo and several surrounding prefectures, is the world's largest metropolitan area with over 35 million residents and the world's largest urban agglomeration economy.
A museum (/mjuˈziːəm/; myoo-zee-um) is an institution that cares for (conserves) a collection of artifacts and other objects of artistic, cultural, historical, or scientific importance and makes them available for public viewing through exhibits that may be permanent or temporary. Most large museums are located in major cities throughout the world and more local ones exist in smaller cities, towns and even the countryside. Museums have varying aims, ranging from serving researchers and specialists to serving the general public. The goal of serving researchers is increasingly shifting to serving the general public.
Some of the most attended museums include the Louvre in Paris, the National Museum of China in Beijing, the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C., the British Museum in London, the National Gallery in London and The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. There are many types of museums, including art museums, natural history museums, science museums, war museums and children's museums.
Yokohama (横浜市, Yokohama-shi) ( listen ), officially the City of Yokohama, is the second largest city in Japan by population after Tokyo, and most populous municipality of Japan. It is the capital city of Kanagawa Prefecture. It lies on Tokyo Bay, south of Tokyo, in the Kantō region of the main island of Honshu. It is a major commercial hub of the Greater Tokyo Area.
Yokohama's population of 3.7 million makes it Japan's largest incorporated city. Yokohama developed rapidly as Japan's prominent port city following the end of Japan's relative isolation in the mid-19th century, and is today one of its major ports along with Kobe, Osaka, Nagoya, Hakata, Tokyo, and Chiba.
Yokohama was a small fishing village up to the end of the feudal Edo period, when Japan held a policy of national seclusion, having little contact with foreigners. A major turning point in Japanese history happened in 1853–54, when Commodore Matthew Perry arrived just south of Yokohama with a fleet of American warships, demanding that Japan open several ports for commerce, and the Tokugawa shogunate agreed by signing the Treaty of Peace and Amity.

Try ramen from all over Japan at the Ramen Museum in Yokohama. It's not really a museum - just a lot of ramen restaurants! They serve half-size portions so you can try lots of different types, including tonkotsu ramen, shio ramen and they also serve vegetarian and non-pork versions. The Ramen Museum is in Yokohama, which is a great day trip from Tokyo, just 30-45 minutes by train from Shinjuku. In the same day we also went to the Cup Noodles Museum - it was a noodle themed day! It's evident that I'm eating my way through Japan - and the latest thing to get in my belly has been ramen. Delicious, succulent, salty ramen - and this time, I went to Shin-Yokohama to chow down at the Ramen (or Raumen - as they spell it) Museum. There are nine different ramen shops inside the museum, each featuring different styles of the delectable dish. The venue is also a sight to see, as it replicates a typical Tokyo post-war neighbourhood in the 1950s or 1960s. For Japanese visitors of a certain age, it evokes nostalgic memories of their childhood. For non-Japanese visitors, it's like you've been transported in time to a place that has been recreated with all the detail of a Disney park! The Shin-Yokohama Ramen Museum is more than just a museum. It's an awesome 60s themed museum with 9 different ramen shops. The shops featured change at times but all serve world class ramen. Probably the best ramen you can find in Japan. The museum feels like you're going back in time and is definitely a recommended if you're in Yokohama or Tokyo. The cost to enter is 310¥ and ramen prices range from around 500¥ for a half bowl to 1000¥ for a full bowl. The museum gets very busy where wait times can exceed an hour. During the week, wait times are much lower and there are special performances throughout the day. Many of the restaurants started offering vegetarian options, with two offering vegan options. One is Ryu-shanhai Honten that I tried in the video. Their ramen is a spicy miso ramen...

This week I hit up something new in Yokohama. YUJI RAMEN is the latest shop to pop up at the Shin-Yokohama Raumen Museum. Yuji Haraguchi runs Okonomi out of Brooklyn, New York, and his ramen showcases his history with fish markets. Using left over bones, he creates a unique tuna ramen. Also on the menu are a couple soupless mazesoba bowls that he gained recognition for in New York. This shop will be at the Raumen Museum for about a year and a half.
