CALIFORNIA — Parts of California’s San Joaquin Valley are sinking at an alarming rate of almost two inches every month, a new research from NASA has revealed.
The faster subsidence rate in California’s San Joaquin Valley is attributed to increased consumption of groundwater due to the drought.
Subsidence was observed in almost everywhere in the San Joaquin Valley, with some of the worst sinking near the towns of Corcoran and El Nido, which dropped 13 inches and 10 inches respectively over a six-month period through early this year, according to the San Jose Mercury News.
The subsidence is damaging roads, pipes and altering the slope of the land but the situation may not improve anytime soon.
“We are pumping more than we are recharging,” San Jose Mercury News quoted Mark Cowin, California Department of Water Resources director as saying. “We don't believe we can sustain this type of pumping.”
Pumping groundwater from the deep aquifer reduces water pressure and causes the clay particles in the Corcoran Clay, a layer that separates the valley’s shallow aquifer from its deep aquifer to compact, leading the heavy ground above them to collapse.
Once the clay particles compact, it can never be repaired and would permanently limiting future water storage.

California's Central Valley is a large, flat valley that dominates the geographical center of the U.S. state of California. It is 40 to 60 miles (60 to 100 km) wide and stretches approximately 450 miles (720 km) from north-northwest to south-southeast, inland from and parallel to the Pacific Ocean coast.
It covers approximately 22,500 square miles (58,000 km2), about 13.7% of California's total land area (slightly smaller than the state of West Virginia), and is home to some of California's most productive agricultural areas.
The Central Valley comprises multiple major watershed systems: the Sacramento Valley, which receives well over 20 inches (510 mm) of rain annually, in the north, and the drier San Joaquin Valley in the south, with the Tulare Basin and its semi-arid desert climate at the southernmost end.
The Sacramento and San Joaquin river systems drain their respective valleys and meet to form the delta, a large expanse of interconnected canals, stream beds, sloughs, marshes and peat islands, ultimately flowing to the Pacific by way of San Francisco Bay.
The waters of the Tulare Basin essentially never flow to the ocean, though they are connected by man-made canals to the San Joaquin and could drain there again naturally if they were ever to rise high enough.

Cotton used to be King around here. It is making a significant comeback this year. Look out for headaches from the defoliant and lots of particulates from the picking and ginning. The diesel pickers, module builders, and trucks will also be adding a lot of NOx emissions meaning increased ozone if it's hot and increased ammonium nitrate if the weather cools.

The San Joaquin Valley /ˌsæn hwɑːˈkiːn/ is the area of the Central Valley of California that lies south of the Sacramento – San Joaquin River Delta in Stockton. Although most of the valley is rural, it does contain MSAs (urban cities and suburbs) such as Delano, Fresno, Bakersfield, Stockton, Modesto, Visalia, Porterville, Merced, Madera, and Hanford.
The San Joaquin Valley extends from the Sacramento – San Joaquin River Delta in the north to the Tehachapi Mountains in the south, and from the various California coastal ranges (from the Diablo Range in the north to the Temblor Range in the south) in the west to the Sierra Nevada in the east. Unlike the Sacramento Valley, the river system for which the San Joaquin Valley is named does not extend very far along the valley. Most of the valley south of Fresno instead drains into Tulare Lake, which no longer exists continuously due to diversion of its sources. The valley's primary river is the San Joaquin, which drains north through about half of the valley into the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta. The Kings, and Kern rivers are in the southern endorheic basin of the valley, all of which have been largely diverted for agricultural uses and are mostly dry in their lower reaches.

Pumping groundwater from the deep aquifer reduces water pressure and causes the clay particles in the Corcoran Clay, a layer that separates the valley’s shallow aquifer from its deep aquifer to compact, leading the heavy ground above them to collapse.
Once the clay particles compact, it can never be repaired and would permanently limiting future water storage.

Subsidence was observed in almost everywhere in the San Joaquin Valley, with some of the worst sinking near the towns of Corcoran and El Nido, which dropped 13 inches and 10 inches respectively over a six-month period through early this year, according to the San Jose Mercury News.
The subsidence is damaging roads, pipes and altering the slope of the land but the situation may not improve anytime soon.
“We are pumping more than we are recharging,” San Jose Mercury News quoted Mark Cowin, California Department of Water Resources director as saying. “We don't believe we can sustain this type of pumping.”
Pumping groundwater from the deep aquifer reduces water pressure and causes the clay particles in the Corcoran Clay, a layer that separates the valley’s shallow aquifer from its deep aquifer to compact, leading the heavy ground above them to collapse.
Once the clay particles compact, it can never be repaired and would permanently limiting future water storage.

BNSF Autorack in Del Mar
Taken back in early March, a long BNSF Loaded Autorack cruises through Del Mar between CP Del Mar and the former Del Mar ATSF/Amtrak Station. I was standing at the end of a CulDuSac watching this pass. This is a less traveled way from San Luis Obispo area to the San Joaquin Valley, but I think it is one of the most fun. I shot this a little late in the day and the sun was setting fast. As you can see I got into Bakersfield just as it got dark. A unexpected surprise was the motion blur from the longer exposure time where the camera was trying to adjust to the less light.

Malibu was originally settled by the Chumash, Native Americans whose territory extended loosely from the San Joaquin Valley to San Luis Obispo to Malibu, as well as several islands off the southern coast of California. They named it Humaliwo or the surf sounds loudly. The city's name derives from this, as the Hu syllable is not stressed.
Explorer Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo is believed to have moored at Malibu Lagoon, at the mouth of Malibu Creek, to obtain fresh water in 1542. The Spanish presence returned with the California mission system, and the area was part of Rancho Topanga Malibu Sequit—a 13,000-acre (53 km2) land grant—in 1802. That ranch passed intact to Frederick Hastings Rindge in 1891. He and his widow, Rhoda May Rindge, guarded their privacy zealously by hiring guards to evict all trespassers and fighting a lengthy court battle to prevent the building of a Southern Pacific railroad line. Few roads even entered the area before 1929, when the state won another court case and built what is now known as the Pacific Coast Highway. By then May Rindge was forced to subdivide her property and begin selling and leasing lots. The Rindge house, known as the Adamson House (a National Register of Historic Places site and California Historical Landmark), is now part of Malibu Creek State Park and is situated between Malibu Lagoon State Beach and Surfrider Beach, beside the Malibu Pier that was originally built for the family yacht.

Malibu was originally settled by the Chumash, Native Americans whose territory extended loosely from the San Joaquin Valley to San Luis Obispo to Malibu, as well as several islands off the southern coast of California. They named it Humaliwo or the surf sounds loudly. The city's name derives from this, as the Hu syllable is not stressed.
Explorer Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo is believed to have moored at Malibu Lagoon, at the mouth of Malibu Creek, to obtain fresh water in 1542. The Spanish presence returned with the California mission system, and the area was part of Rancho Topanga Malibu Sequit—a 13,000-acre (53 km2) land grant—in 1802. That ranch passed intact to Frederick Hastings Rindge in 1891. He and his widow, Rhoda May Rindge, guarded their privacy zealously by hiring guards to evict all trespassers and fighting a lengthy court battle to prevent the building of a Southern Pacific railroad line. Few roads even entered the area before 1929, when the state won another court case and built what is now known as the Pacific Coast Highway. By then May Rindge was forced to subdivide her property and begin selling and leasing lots. The Rindge house, known as the Adamson House (a National Register of Historic Places site and California Historical Landmark), is now part of Malibu Creek State Park and is situated between Malibu Lagoon State Beach and Surfrider Beach, beside the Malibu Pier that was originally built for the family yacht.

- For the Honda Bay Island Tour, bringing your own snorkelling gear would be best. You can either rent out snorkelling masks and shoes for Php 150 each at one of the renting sheds along the way to Honda Bay.
- Underground River tour, best sit at the very front of the boat. You will be asked to holds flood light during the tour and point out rock formations as instructed by your tour guide. As you have control of the light you get a better view of everything as it gets pitch dark once you get in.

Taken back in early March, a long BNSF Loaded Autorack cruises through Del Mar between CP Del Mar and the former Del Mar ATSF/Amtrak Station. I was standing at the end of a CulDuSac watching this pass. I had been trying to coordinate with the rest of the foam team I was hanging with this weekend where to meet up when this passed by resulting in my grab shot (when I can edit videos again next week I'll add the REAL "grab" footage so you can laugh) while they got it a bit further upline with a bit more warning.
Autoracks are a huge industry for BNSF in San Diego, with several shiploads of cars (4-6 thousand cars apiece per boat) per month from each of Honda, Mazda, Toyota, and Volkswagen, and cars coming up from Mexico via the San Diego Borders from GM, Toyota, and VW, trains as long as 90 cars (articulated cars count as one!) go out to multiple destinations (Clovis NM or up the San Joaquin Valley) once or twice a day depending on how recently a ship came in.

This conference is part of the many steps MY DEEN is taking in uniting and activating our community and in promoting stronger ties with all of the Masjids/Centers in the San Joaquin Valley and beyond.
The Conference theme for this year is The Pursuit of Happiness -- A Journey Towards Iman.... One of the ultimate goals for the human soul is to pursue happiness. We go about many different ways to achieve it. We continuously desire after materialistic things, money, or anything that fulfills our desires. However, as we reach to the height of happiness in each of these destinations, it soon subsides and we fall back to that same yearning. It is a fact that wealth and materialism are no guarantees for happiness. If they were, then you would not see so much depression amongst these classes of people in this world. Happiness can only be found when one puts their true faith in Allah and abides by each command of Allah, forbidding what is wrong and enjoining what is right. How can one not be happy when the blessings and the constant watch of Allah and complete guidance is upon us? Therefore, in order to find the peace and happiness that we all long for, we need to open our hearts and take steps towards the guidance of Allah and in return Allah will come running towards us accepting and fulfilling all of our wishes, the most important, granting us true and lasting happiness.
