Mudcrutch
Mudcrutch is a Southern rock band from Gainesville, Florida best known for being the forerunner of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers.
History
Early Years
Mudcrutch was formed in 1970 by Tom Petty and Tom Leadon, who had been playing together in a band called the Epics. Mudcrutch's lineup consisted of Tom Petty (bass and vocals), Tom Leadon (guitar and vocals), Jim Lenehan (lead vocals), Randall Marsh (drums) and Mike Campbell (guitar). Leadon and Lenehan left the band in 1972 and were replaced by bassist/guitarist/vocalist Danny Roberts. Keyboardist Benmont Tench also joined the band. Ricky Rucker was a part of the band for a short time. Mudcrutch served as the house band at Dub's Lounge in its hometown of Gainesville, Florida.
In 1974, Mudcrutch signed with Shelter Records and re-located to Los Angeles, California. The band released one single, "Depot Street," in 1975, which failed to chart. After Danny Roberts left the group, Petty invited Charlie Souza to take over on bass guitar and the band continued recording in Leon Russell's Tulsa Studio, and later at Leon's Encino California home. The band's record company broke them up in late 1975. Petty, Campbell and Tench went on to form The Heartbreakers in 1976 with fellow Gainesville natives Stan Lynch and Ron Blair.

Thomas Earl Petty (born October 20, 1950) is an American musician, singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and record producer. He is best known as the lead singer of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, but is also known as a member and co-founder of the late 1980s supergroup the Traveling Wilburys (under the pseudonyms of Charlie T. Wilbury, Jr. and Muddy Wilbury) and Mudcrutch.
He has recorded a number of hit singles with the Heartbreakers and as a solo artist, many of which remain heavily played on adult contemporary and classic rock radio. His music has been classified as rock and roll, heartland rock and even stoner rock. His music, and notably his hits, have become popular among younger generations as he continues to host sold-out shows. Throughout his career, Petty has sold more than 80 million records worldwide, making him one of the best-selling music artists of all time. In 2002, he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Bluegrass ace and country-rock pioneer Herb Pedersen spoke with Santa Clarita journalist Stephen K. Peeples at the singer-songwriter-multi-instrumentalist's home musician's home in Woodland Hills in L.A.'s San Fernando Valley on Sept. 17, 1972. Pedersen had guested on Peeples' "House Blend" music and interview program on SCVTV in Santa Clarita three times, and it was time for an update. After a warm introduction from Bill Graham, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers took to the Winterland stage the night before the revered venue would be closed forever with a capstone set by the Grateful Dead on New Year's Eve. Petty was a perfect installment to drive home the final days of Winterland and was very well-received by an audience of young San Franciscans, keeping his vibe upbeat but also tapping into some of the despondency that makes him so accessible as a musician to fans worldwide. Early in their career, Petty and the Heartbreakers only had two albums under their belts at the time of this show, the self-titled debut in '76 and the 1978 follow-up You're Gonna Get It!
Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers kick things off with "Surrender" before launching into "Anything That's Rock 'N' Roll" and proceed to play an hour and a half of early hits, carving out their signature sound of rollicking heartland rock to the Winterland audience. "Casadega" is a pretty, lesser-known ode about a town in Florida, and then Petty gets into the rest of his set with many of the favorites that have made him a household name: "I Need to Know," "Refugee," "Listen To Her Heart," "American Girl," and "Breakdown," all renditions of classic songs that don't, at this early stage of their career, bear the stamp of time that today weathers many Petty compositions. Petty chats with the audience, telling a funny story about a card game the night before introducing "another new song, Refugee."
Tom Petty grew up in Gainesville, Florida and embraces an all-American sensibility in his songwriting, which recalls that of Bob Dylan, The Byrds, and Bruce Springsteen. Much of his compositions have a raucous vibe but are rooted in strong characters and stories of the downtrodden heroes of our culture. At 17, Petty left school to join Mudcrutch, who then relocated to LA just before breaking up. Petty remained active with some other musical ensembles before honing his songwriting skills with the Heartbreakers, and in 1976 the band released their self-titled debut, which was first a hit in England before American audiences caught on. A few years later, they released their breakthrough album, Damn the Torpedoes which spent seven weeks at number two on the US charts. And the rest, as they say, is history, and today Petty is one of rock's most respected, enduring, and best loved performers.

He went on to membership in The Dillards, The Desert Rose Band and The Laurel Canyon Ramblers; has toured for the last couple of decades as a duo with fellow DRB bandmate Chris Hillman (Chris and Herb have been pals for nearly 50 years); and was a frequent guest with The Grateful Dudes, the longest-running bluegrass band in the U.S.A., based in Newhall, California.
Based in Southern California since the 1970s, Pedersen has toured or recorded the world with a who's who of folk, country and country-rock artists, among them Linda Ronstadt, Emmylou Harris, Gram Parsons, The Flying Burrito Brothers, Gene Clark, Jimmy Webb, John Stewart, John Denver, James Taylor, Stephen Stills, Kris Kristofferson, Vince Gill, Johnny Rivers, Dan Fogelberg, James Taylor, Gordon Lightfoot, The Doobie Brothers, Jennifer Warnes, John Prine, Steve Goodman, Jesse Winchester, John Fogerty, Dolly Parton, Weird Al Yankovic, Ringo Starr, Duane Eddy, Buck Owens, Dwight Yaokam and many more.
