In 2020 the national day and the Mid autumn festival coincide on the same dates, so from October 1st to the 8th we have holidays here in China. This time we decided to a place far from Shenzhen, is a city that not many people in China know, which I wonder why since this is very beautiful and interesting place! Very different from the China we are used to, this city resembles more to Thailand or any other country from Southeast Asia than China itself. Still beautiful, we spent 4 days in this wonderful city, exploring its parks, temples, gastronomy and night life. Following on from my previous travel show when I travelled aboard one of China's remaining slow trains, running through Liangshan Yi Autonomous Region, in Sichuan Province, this time I travel over 100km alongside some of the wonderful people from the Yi ethnic minority in order to go to market.
The market is so vibrant and full of people haggling and buying, there were so many interesting scenes everywhere I looked. And the majority of people who had travelled to the market arrived via the slow train. Xishuangbanna Dai Autonomous Prefecture
Xishuangbanna, Sibsongbanna, or Sipsong Panna, abbreviated to Banna (full name: Tai Lü: ᦈᦹᧈᦈᦹᧈᦋᦵᦲᧁᦘᦱᦉᦱᦑᦺ᧑᧒ᦗᧃᦓᦱ; Chinese: 西双版纳傣族自治州; Thai: สิบสองปันนา, Sipsongpanna), is a Tai Lü autonomous prefecture in the extreme south of Yunnan Province, China. The prefectural seat is Jinghong, the largest settlement in the area and one that straddles the Mekong River, called the Lancang River in Chinese.
Etymology
Sipsongpanna (cognate to the Thai สิบสองปันนา, rtgs: Sip Song Pan Na) is a Tai Lü compound consisting of sipsong "twelve", pan "township" and na "rice paddy". The name refers to the traditional division of the mueang into twelve districts that were called panna (literally "township rice-fields") The etymology is parallel to the autonomous Tai-speaking region in French Indochina from 1890 to 1945 called Sip Song Chau Tai meaning "twelve Tai cantons".
History
In the chaos of the Xinhai Revolution that overthrew the Qing government in 1911 in favor of a Chinese republican government, a local official, Chao Meeng Jie, staged a rebellion against the Qing remnant officials. The Yunnan provincial government of the newly established Republic of China sent troops in 1913 to oust the rebels. Ke Shuxun remained in Xishuangbanna to govern with his "13 Principles of Governing the Frontier", which emphasized equality between Han and Dai in areas such as land ownership and taxation, allowed intermarriage between the ethnic groups and promoted education in secular and technical subjects, rather than Burmese-based monastic education. The Second Sino-Japanese War (1931-1945) saw the heavy bombardment of Xishuangbanna by Japanese troops and a simultaneous influx of Pan-Taiist propaganda from Japan's ally, Thailand. According to Hsieh, this reduced the appeal of a broad pan-Tai identity among the Dai Lue.

In 2020 the national day and the Mid autumn festival coincide on the same dates, so from October 1st to the 8th we have holidays here in China. This time we decided to a place far from Shenzhen, is a city that not many people in China know, which I wonder why since this is very beautiful and interesting place! Very different from the China we are used to, this city resembles more to Thailand or any other country from Southeast Asia than China itself. Still beautiful, we spent 4 days in this wonderful city, exploring its parks, temples, gastronomy and night life. Following on from my previous travel show when I travelled aboard one of China's remaining slow trains, running through Liangshan Yi Autonomous Region, in Sichuan Province, this time I travel over 100km alongside some of the wonderful people from the Yi ethnic minority in order to go to market.
The market is so vibrant and full of people haggling and buying, there were so many interesting scenes everywhere I looked. And the majority of people who had travelled to the market arrived via the slow train. Autonomous prefectures (Chinese: 自治州; pinyin: Zìzhìzhōu) are one type of autonomous administrative divisions of China, existing at the prefectural level, with either ethnic minorities forming over 50% of the population or being the historic home of significant minorities. All autonomous prefectures are mostly dominated, in population, by the Han Chinese. The official name of an autonomous prefecture includes the most dominant minority in that region, sometimes two, rarely three. For example, a Kazakh (Kazak in official naming system) prefecture may be called Kazak Zizhizhou. Like all other prefectural level divisions, autonomous prefectures are divided into county level divisions. There is one exception: Ili Kazak Autonomous Prefecture contains two prefectures of its own. Under the Constitution of the People's Republic of China, autonomous prefectures cannot be abolished.

Xishuangbanna Dai Autonomous Prefecture
Xishuangbanna, Sibsongbanna, or Sipsong Panna, abbreviated to Banna (full name: Tai Lü: ᦈᦹᧈᦈᦹᧈᦋᦵᦲᧁᦘᦱᦉᦱᦑᦺ᧑᧒ᦗᧃᦓᦱ; Chinese: 西双版纳傣族自治州; Thai: สิบสองปันนา, Sipsongpanna), is a Tai Lü autonomous prefecture in the extreme south of Yunnan Province, China. The prefectural seat is Jinghong, the largest settlement in the area and one that straddles the Mekong River, called the Lancang River in Chinese.
Etymology
Sipsongpanna (cognate to the Thai สิบสองปันนา, rtgs: Sip Song Pan Na) is a Tai Lü compound consisting of sipsong "twelve", pan "township" and na "rice paddy". The name refers to the traditional division of the mueang into twelve districts that were called panna (literally "township rice-fields") The etymology is parallel to the autonomous Tai-speaking region in French Indochina from 1890 to 1945 called Sip Song Chau Tai meaning "twelve Tai cantons".

In the chaos of the Xinhai Revolution that overthrew the Qing government in 1911 in favor of a Chinese republican government, a local official, Chao Meeng Jie, staged a rebellion against the Qing remnant officials. The Yunnan provincial government of the newly established Republic of China sent troops in 1913 to oust the rebels. Ke Shuxun remained in Xishuangbanna to govern with his "13 Principles of Governing the Frontier", which emphasized equality between Han and Dai in areas such as land ownership and taxation, allowed intermarriage between the ethnic groups and promoted education in secular and technical subjects, rather than Burmese-based monastic education. The Second Sino-Japanese War (1931-1945) saw the heavy bombardment of Xishuangbanna by Japanese troops and a simultaneous influx of Pan-Taiist propaganda from Japan's ally, Thailand. According to Hsieh, this reduced the appeal of a broad pan-Tai identity among the Dai Lue.
