For "In Conversation" this week, Stephen Davies travels to Macau to examine a question of identity that also has resonance for Hong Kong. Our guest "In Conversation" is Miguel de Senna Fernandes, a lawyer by profession, a former Macau legislator, and a keen preserver of Macanese identity. What might the determination to preserve a sense of one's own culture mean to a Hong Kong that shares a concern about losing its identity and individuality?
Last year, the theatre group "Dóci Papiaçám di Macau", which Miguel de Senna Fernandes co-founded, celebrated its 20th anniversary. The troupe's name means "Sweet Language of Macau", and refers to the fact that its plays are presented in the Macanese creole language, Patuá.
Miguel's father Henrique de Senna Fernandes was also known as a writer, in Patuá, who celebrated Macanese lives and identity. Patuá contains elements of Sinhala, of Malayalam, of Arabic, English, and Cantonese. In its word patterns and vocabulary there are hints of the entire history of colonial Portugal, particularly in Asia.
Each year, Miguel writes a new play for the theatre group, presented during the Macau Arts Festival, that pokes timely fun at social and political events in the former Portuguese colony. But apart from the satire, Miguel says the troupe aims to demystify "the old idea of Patuá as a language only spoken by the elderly".
"It makes all sense to keep on doing Patuá, keep on writing articles, writing books about Macau's uniqueness, using the Portuguese, using a lot of things just to point out, just to see people say: "Yes, we are part of this world, we are part of this territory, we are part of this history, but we are different."
Stephen and Miguel also discuss why Hong Kong seems so much less willing to celebrate the international aspects of its culture than Macau, even appears slightly ashamed of them, and why Hong Kong's sense of its separateness from dominant Chinese culture may have a somewhat different emphasis.
"Now, the Hong Kong people say: "We are different." But they are different to whom? That's the question. To whom? And to whom is obviously the mainland. Our something is our surrounding people. By contrast in Hong Kong, the statement ... there is a statement there but this statement is rather political. This is my point of view. I don't know whether this political statement would evolve to a rather cultural thing but, well, that's something that we have to see further."

"In Conversation" airs on TVB Pearl, on Thursday 3rd July at 7 p.m. The programme will also be shown on RTHK DTTV Channel 31 at 10.30 p.m. that same night, and at the same time the following Tuesday.

Macau
Macau (/məˈkaʊ/; 澳門; 澳门; "Bay gate"), also spelled Macao, officially known as the Macao Special Administrative Region of the People's Republic of China, is a special administrative region on the southern coast of the People's Republic of China. Macau lies on the western side of the Pearl River Delta across from Hong Kong, which is about 64 kilometers to the east, and it is also bordered by Guangdong of Mainland China to the north and the South China Sea to the east and south. With an estimated population of around 636,200 living in an area of 30.3 km2 (11.6 sq mi), it is the most densely populated region in the world.
As Portuguese Macau, it was administered by the Portuguese Empire and its inheritor states from the mid-16th century until late 1999, when it was the last remaining European colony in Asia under Portugal. Portuguese traders first settled in Macau in the 1550s. In 1557, Macau was rented to Portugal from Ming China as a trading port. The Portuguese Empire administered the city under Chinese authority and sovereignty until 1887, when Macau became a colony. Sovereignty over Macau was transferred to China on 20 December 1999. The Joint Declaration on the Question of Macau and Macau Basic Law stipulate that Macau operate with a high degree of autonomy until at least 2049, fifty years after the transfer.

Macau Travel Guide
A travel guide for visiting the Historic Portuguese Center of Macau. Macau (also spelled Macao) was a colony of Portugal from 1557 from 1999 and has a very interesting mix of Asian and European architectures. The Center of the old city is Senado Square which has a pedestrianized street that leads to the Ruins of St. Paul's Cathedral. Macau derived it's name from the A-Ma Temple, originally built in 1448 and still standing today. It is small and museum-like, a fine example of colonial Portugal on the South China Sea. Things to do in Hong Kong and Macau Travel Guide
When I reflect back on our travels around Asia few memories are fonder than our time spent in both Hong Kong and Macau. From the fascinating attractions in both cities to the amazing local eats we really packed in a lot over a short period of time. Things to do in Macau Travel Guide
Today's feature travel video from Asia is of the top attractions worth considering while visiting in Macau, China including checking out Senado Square and the Ruins of Saint Paul's Cathedral. Feeling well rested after going to bed several hours earlier than normal, we felt a jolt of adrenaline about exploring the historic areas of Macau located on another island from the hotel we were staying at. Fortunately, our hotel offered 'free' transfer service from Cotai to the Macau Peninsula. We literally went from an island filled with nothing but luxury casinos to a more historic area that featured historic Portuguese inspired architecture, cobbled walkways and a plethora of people. In terms of attractions, most people who come to visit Macau may only come for the gambling. That's a shame. Attractions such as Senado Square and the ruins of Saint Paul Cathedral await those who explore its old city quarters. Macau's largest Buddhist temple, Templo de Kun Iam Tong, dates back 400 years to the Ming Dynasty when its original foundations were built. Beyond its main gate, just off a busy street in the north of the city, is a peaceful oasis of silence and contemplation, a mystic place in which stone lions, golden Buddhas and all who visit are surrounded by serene, aromatic wisps of smoke.
The beautiful Jardim de Lou Lim Ioc Park is situated in the northern less touristy business district of the city. It was designed in the 19th century by a wealthy Chinese trader, Lou Kau. This marvelous oasis is an idyllic setting with a lotus pond, rocks, grottos and waterfalls.
Excursions are available on restored motorized junks that leave from the City's harbor several times a day.
Taipa is the larger of the two islands that belong to Macau. The tangled and narrow alleys in the centre of Vila da Taipa abound with rural character and Portuguese street signs are painted on azulejos. The island's shops and light-colored houses would be equally at home in Portugal.
Although the Macau of today has much contemporary flair, it continues to enjoy a rich colonial inheritance that is well worth seeing.

After 466 years, Portugal handed back the city of Macau to China. It is small and museum-like, a fine example of colonial Portugal on the South China Sea.

Today's feature travel video from Asia is of the top attractions worth considering while visiting in Macau, China including checking out Senado Square and the Ruins of Saint Paul's Cathedral. Feeling well rested after going to bed several hours earlier than normal, we felt a jolt of adrenaline about exploring the historic areas of Macau located on another island from the hotel we were staying at. Fortunately, our hotel offered 'free' transfer service from Cotai to the Macau Peninsula. We literally went from an island filled with nothing but luxury casinos to a more historic area that featured historic Portuguese inspired architecture, cobbled walkways and a plethora of people.

As soon as we got outside of the transfer bus, Audrey marveled, "I feel as though I'm back visiting more relatives in Brazil or wandering around in Portugal."
The first place we visited was the Senada Square (Portuguese: Largo do Senado; Chinese: 議事亭前地). With pastel colored buildings, Portuguese white & black pavement and a series of red lanterns, this place was a collision between East meets West.
Prior to Macau becoming the 'Las Vegas' of Asia with its plethora of casinos, Senate Square was the epicenter of the former Portuguese Colony of Macau.
As the Historic Centre of Macao (Chinese: 澳門歷史城區; Portuguese: O Centro Histórico de Macau) it is one of twenty locations featuring the melting pot of Chinese and Portuguese cultures in Macau.
Even though Macau has been a Special Administrative Region of China since 1999, it has still retained its Portuguese influence from several centuries of colonial rule.
As we walked past the main square we started to branch off into a narrower alley where we were inundated by the exotic smells of Macanese delights being peddled by shop owners and hawkers alike.
Some of the most popular Macanese foods we sampled included Egg Tarts, Almond Cookies and Porkchops in buns.
Macanese cuisine is a mix of Portuguese, Chinese and SE Asian ingredients forming one of the more distinct fusion style cuisines in all of Asia.
After taking the time to gormandize on Macanese treats, we continued our ascent towards the imposing Ruins of Saint Paul's Cathedral ((Portuguese: Ruínas de São Paulo, Chinese: 大三巴牌坊).
Considered as one of the most famous landmarks in all of Macau.
The heat and humidity of Macau in late August was on par with the weather we had been experiencing in SE Asia for several months.
This was distinctly different from the time I first visited back in February, 2008 when I could walk for kilometers on end without breaking a sweat.
Built from 1852 to 1602 by the Jesuits, Saint Paul's Cathedral was one of the grandest churches in all of Asia.
Destroyed by a fire during a typhoon in 1835, the southern stone faced features intricate carvings.
Finally we legged it up to Mount Fortress (Portuguese: Fortaleza do Monte; Chinese: 大炮台) for impressive 360 degree panoramic views of the city.

Today's feature travel video from Asia is of the top attractions worth considering while visiting in Macau, China including checking out Senado Square and the Ruins of Saint Paul's Cathedral. Feeling well rested after going to bed several hours earlier than normal, we felt a jolt of adrenaline about exploring the historic areas of Macau located on another island from the hotel we were staying at. Fortunately, our hotel offered 'free' transfer service from Cotai to the Macau Peninsula. We literally went from an island filled with nothing but luxury casinos to a more historic area that featured historic Portuguese inspired architecture, cobbled walkways and a plethora of people.

As soon as we got outside of the transfer bus, Audrey marveled, "I feel as though I'm back visiting more relatives in Brazil or wandering around in Portugal."
The first place we visited was the Senada Square (Portuguese: Largo do Senado; Chinese: 議事亭前地). With pastel colored buildings, Portuguese white & black pavement and a series of red lanterns, this place was a collision between East meets West.
Prior to Macau becoming the 'Las Vegas' of Asia with its plethora of casinos, Senate Square was the epicenter of the former Portuguese Colony of Macau.
As the Historic Centre of Macao (Chinese: 澳門歷史城區; Portuguese: O Centro Histórico de Macau) it is one of twenty locations featuring the melting pot of Chinese and Portuguese cultures in Macau.
Even though Macau has been a Special Administrative Region of China since 1999, it has still retained its Portuguese influence from several centuries of colonial rule.
As we walked past the main square we started to branch off into a narrower alley where we were inundated by the exotic smells of Macanese delights being peddled by shop owners and hawkers alike.
Some of the most popular Macanese foods we sampled included Egg Tarts, Almond Cookies and Porkchops in buns.
Macanese cuisine is a mix of Portuguese, Chinese and SE Asian ingredients forming one of the more distinct fusion style cuisines in all of Asia.
After taking the time to gormandize on Macanese treats, we continued our ascent towards the imposing Ruins of Saint Paul's Cathedral ((Portuguese: Ruínas de São Paulo, Chinese: 大三巴牌坊).
Considered as one of the most famous landmarks in all of Macau.
The heat and humidity of Macau in late August was on par with the weather we had been experiencing in SE Asia for several months.
This was distinctly different from the time I first visited back in February, 2008 when I could walk for kilometers on end without breaking a sweat.
Built from 1852 to 1602 by the Jesuits, Saint Paul's Cathedral was one of the grandest churches in all of Asia.
Destroyed by a fire during a typhoon in 1835, the southern stone faced features intricate carvings.
Finally we legged it up to Mount Fortress (Portuguese: Fortaleza do Monte; Chinese: 大炮台) for impressive 360 degree panoramic views of the city.

According to The World Factbook, Macau has the second highest life expectancy in the world.[17] Moreover, it is one of only a few regions in Asia with a "very high Human Development Index", ranking 25th as of 2011.[18]

It offers the best view of Macau and in recent years has been used for a variety of adventurous activities. At 233 meters, the Macau Tower's tethered "skyjump" and Bungee jump by AJ Hackett[1] from the tower's outer rim, is the highest commercial skyjump in the world (233 meters), and the second highest commercial decelerator descent facility in the world, after Vegas' Stratosphere skyjump at 252 meters.[2] The tower was created by the architecture firm of Craig Craig Moller.

It had been a part of the Portuguese Empire for more than 400 years). Much of the material in the film probably predates WWII, but it's difficult to know for certain. Because it was hardly impacted during World War II, an opening scroll for the film explains that the film features “authentic” scenes of the “ancient city of the Orient.” Scenes include the first lighthouse ever built on the China coast and surprisingly Mediterranean-style buildings. Chinese farmers are shown at mark 02:30 walking down Macao’s lone “highway” as they make their way to market. “They carry their heavy loads for miles slung on poles over their shoulders,” the viewer is told, while a few of the more affluent residents are shown traveling by bicycle. Away from the coastline, the viewer is shown more traditional Chinese structure, beginning near mark 04:00, while of the temple festivals and processions are shown starting at mark 05:30. The A-Ma Temple, Queen of Heaven, is shown at mark 07:00, along with many other sites, including a glimpse of many of the firecrackers the narrator says are made there, and an armada of the fishing junks that head out to sea every day, as the picture comes to an end.
Macau also spelled Macao, officially the Macao Special Administrative Region of the People's Republic of China, is an autonomous territory on the western side of the Pearl River Delta, China. Macau is also bordered by the city of Zhuhai in Mainland China to the North and the Pearl River Estuary to the East and South. Hong Kong lies about 64 kilometres (40 mi) to its East across the Delta. With an estimated population of around 652,500 living in an area of 30.5 km2 (11.8 sq mi), it is the most densely populated region in the world.
Macau was administered by the Portuguese Empire and its inheritor states from the mid-16th century until late 1999, when it was the last remaining European colony in Asia. Portuguese traders first settled in Macau in the 1550s. In 1557, Macau was rented to Portugal from Ming China as a trading port. The Portuguese Empire administered the city under Chinese authority and sovereignty until 1887, when Macau, through a mutual agreement between the two countries, became a colony. Sovereignty over Macau was transferred to China on 20 December 1999. The Joint Declaration on the Question of Macau and Macau Basic Law stipulate that Macau operate with a high degree of autonomy until at least 2049, fifty years after the transfer.
Under the policy of "one country, two systems", the State Council of the People's Republic of China is responsible for military defense and foreign affairs while Macau maintains its own legal system, public security force, monetary system, customs policy, and immigration policy. Macau participates in international organizations and events that do not require members to possess national sovereignty.

The fifth Ministerial Conference of the Forum for Economic and Trade Cooperation between China and Portuguese-speaking countries opened on Tuesday in Macao Special Administrative Region, China.
The opening ceremony was hosted by Chinese Commerce Minister Gao Hucheng.
Chinese Premier Li Keqiang delivered a keynote speech at the event.
