In addition, Macau is one of the very few regions in Asia with a "very high Human Development Index", ranking 23rd or 24th in the world in 2007 (with Japan being the highest in Asia; the other Asian countries/regions within the "very high HDI" category are South Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Singapore, and Brunei).

Because it was hardly impacted during World War II, an opening scroll for the film explains that the film features “authentic” scenes of the “ancient city of the Orient.” Scenes include the first lighthouse ever built on the China coast and surprisingly Mediterranean-style buildings. Basic law
The term basic law is used in some places as an alternative to "constitution", implying it is a temporary but necessary measure without formal enactment of constitution. A basic law is either a codified constitution, or in countries with uncodified constitutions, a law given to have constitution powers and effect. The name is usually used to imply an interim or transitory nature, or avoid attempting a claim to being "the highest law", often for religious reasons. In West Germany the term "Basic Law" (Grundgesetz) was used to indicate that the Basic Law was provisional until the ultimate reunification of Germany. But in 1990 no new constitution was adopted and instead the Basic Law was adopted throughout the entire German territory. Basic law is entrenched in that it overrides ordinary 'statute law' passed by the legislature.
The Special Administrative Regions of the People's Republic of China, namely Hong Kong and Macau, have basic laws as their constitutional documents. The basic laws are the highest authority, respectively, in the territories, while the rights of amendment and interpretation rest with the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress of the People's Republic of China.

Macau is one of the world's richest cities, and as of 2013 its GDP per capita by purchasing power parity is higher than that of any country in the world, according to the World Bank.[14][15] It became the world's largest gambling centre in 2006,[16] with the economy heavily dependent on gambling and tourism, as well as manufacturing. Cantonese people from Hong Kong and Guangdong, in addition to the recent mainland tourism from Mandarin-speaking regions, have boosted the economy of Macau significantly. According to The World Factbook, Macau has the second highest life expectancy in the world.[17] Moreover, it is one of only a few regions in Asia with a "very high Human Development Index", ranking 25th as of 2011.[18]

Macau (also spelled Macao) was a colony of Portugal from 1557 from 1999 and has a very interesting mix of Asian and European architectures. Today's feature travel video from Asia is of the top attractions worth considering while visiting in Macau, China including checking out Senado Square and the Ruins of Saint Paul's Cathedral. Feeling well rested after going to bed several hours earlier than normal, we felt a jolt of adrenaline about exploring the historic areas of Macau located on another island from the hotel we were staying at. Fortunately, our hotel offered 'free' transfer service from Cotai to the Macau Peninsula. We literally went from an island filled with nothing but luxury casinos to a more historic area that featured historic Portuguese inspired architecture, cobbled walkways and a plethora of people. A travel guide for visiting the Historic Portuguese Center of Macau. Macau (also spelled Macao) was a colony of Portugal from 1557 from 1999 and has a very interesting mix of Asian and European architectures. The Center of the old city is Senado Square which has a pedestrianized street that leads to the Ruins of St. Paul's Cathedral. Macau derived it's name from the A-Ma Temple, originally built in 1448 and still standing today.

After 466 years, Portugal handed back the city of Macau to China. It is small and museum-like, a fine example of colonial Portugal on the South China Sea.
The Fortaleza Do Monte is a typical Portuguese fortified complex strategically located on a hill above the old cathedral in the heart of the city. Its many old canons and mighty fortress walls are reminders of those times when invasion was a constant threat.
The old centre of the city is the triangular Largo Do Senado, Senate Square. Its wonderful colonial buildings with their light-colored facades were built at the end of the 19th century and completely renovated in the final decade of the 20th.
Macau's largest Buddhist temple, Templo de Kun Iam Tong, dates back 400 years to the Ming Dynasty when its original foundations were built. Beyond its main gate, just off a busy street in the north of the city, is a peaceful oasis of silence and contemplation, a mystic place in which stone lions, golden Buddhas and all who visit are surrounded by serene, aromatic wisps of smoke.
The beautiful Jardim de Lou Lim Ioc Park is situated in the northern less touristy business district of the city. It was designed in the 19th century by a wealthy Chinese trader, Lou Kau. This marvelous oasis is an idyllic setting with a lotus pond, rocks, grottos and waterfalls.
Excursions are available on restored motorized junks that leave from the City's harbor several times a day.
Taipa is the larger of the two islands that belong to Macau. The tangled and narrow alleys in the centre of Vila da Taipa abound with rural character and Portuguese street signs are painted on azulejos. The island's shops and light-colored houses would be equally at home in Portugal.
Although the Macau of today has much contemporary flair, it continues to enjoy a rich colonial inheritance that is well worth seeing.

We were amazed by the beauty of macau and we were so glad that we found a guide to show us around. His name was peter and he showed us around for hk$500 per person. My 7th hongkong travel vlog. On this day i went to macau with my sisters. Macau was really beautiful and nothing like i imagined infact It was more beautiful than my imagination. We were amazed by the beauty of macau and we were so glad that we found a guide to show us around. His name was peter and he showed us around for hk$500 per person. Today's feature travel video from Asia is of the top attractions worth considering while visiting in Macau, China including checking out Senado Square and the Ruins of Saint Paul's Cathedral. Feeling well rested after going to bed several hours earlier than normal, we felt a jolt of adrenaline about exploring the historic areas of Macau located on another island from the hotel we were staying at. Fortunately, our hotel offered 'free' transfer service from Cotai to the Macau Peninsula. We literally went from an island filled with nothing but luxury casinos to a more historic area that featured historic Portuguese inspired architecture, cobbled walkways and a plethora of people.

As soon as we got outside of the transfer bus, Audrey marveled, "I feel as though I'm back visiting more relatives in Brazil or wandering around in Portugal."
The first place we visited was the Senada Square (Portuguese: Largo do Senado; Chinese: 議事亭前地). With pastel colored buildings, Portuguese white & black pavement and a series of red lanterns, this place was a collision between East meets West.
Prior to Macau becoming the 'Las Vegas' of Asia with its plethora of casinos, Senate Square was the epicenter of the former Portuguese Colony of Macau.
As the Historic Centre of Macao (Chinese: 澳門歷史城區; Portuguese: O Centro Histórico de Macau) it is one of twenty locations featuring the melting pot of Chinese and Portuguese cultures in Macau.
Even though Macau has been a Special Administrative Region of China since 1999, it has still retained its Portuguese influence from several centuries of colonial rule.
As we walked past the main square we started to branch off into a narrower alley where we were inundated by the exotic smells of Macanese delights being peddled by shop owners and hawkers alike.
Some of the most popular Macanese foods we sampled included Egg Tarts, Almond Cookies and Porkchops in buns.
Macanese cuisine is a mix of Portuguese, Chinese and SE Asian ingredients forming one of the more distinct fusion style cuisines in all of Asia.
After taking the time to gormandize on Macanese treats, we continued our ascent towards the imposing Ruins of Saint Paul's Cathedral ((Portuguese: Ruínas de São Paulo, Chinese: 大三巴牌坊).
Considered as one of the most famous landmarks in all of Macau.
The heat and humidity of Macau in late August was on par with the weather we had been experiencing in SE Asia for several months.
This was distinctly different from the time I first visited back in February, 2008 when I could walk for kilometers on end without breaking a sweat.
Built from 1852 to 1602 by the Jesuits, Saint Paul's Cathedral was one of the grandest churches in all of Asia.
Destroyed by a fire during a typhoon in 1835, the southern stone faced features intricate carvings.
Finally we legged it up to Mount Fortress (Portuguese: Fortaleza do Monte; Chinese: 大炮台) for impressive 360 degree panoramic views of the city.
Fortaleza do Monte (Portuguese for Mount Fortress, also Monte Forte, officially Fortaleza de Nossa Senhora do Monte de São Paulo, in English: Fortress of Our Lady of the Mount of St. Paul; Chinese: 大炮台)
Cannons remain, some pointing directly at some of Macau's most monumental casinos, including the Grand Lisboa.
Overall, our late morning and early afternoon excursion was a fascinating glimpse into Macau's past with hints of modernity and riches flashing in all directions from the peak of Fortaleza do Monte: http://nomadicsamuel.com/destinations/macau-china-attractions

The monopoly ended in 2002 and several casino owners from Las Vegas attempted to enter the market. With the opening of the Sands Macao, in 2004 and Wynn Macau in 2006, gambling revenues from Macau's casinos were greatly prosperous. In 2007, Venetian Macau, at the time the second (now seventh) largest building in the world by floor space, opened its doors to the public, followed by MGM Grand Macau. Numerous other hotel casinos, including Galaxy Cotai Megaresort, opened in 2011, and plans for a $3.9 billion complex that will be known as Lisboa Palace is expected to be completed by 2017.
In February 2015, the gambling revenue in Macau fell by 48.6 percent from a year earlier to $2.4 billion, the biggest monthly decline that has ever been recorded. Reasons for this fall of revenue are related to the slowdown that the Chinese economy is having officials pursue a corruption crackdown that's confined in lavish spending.

We next made out way to the old town to see the Ruins of St. Paul's , a 17th-century Portuguese church dedicated to Saint Paul the Apostle. Today, the ruins are one of Macau's best known landmarks. In 2005, they were officially listed as part of the Historic Centre of Macau, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Sovereignty over Macau was transferred back to China on 20 December 1999. The Sino-Portuguese Joint Declaration and the Basic Law of Macau stipulate that Macau operate with a high degree of autonomy until at least 2049, fifty years after the transfer. By 2002, it had become one of the world's richest cities. It became the world's biggest gambling centre in 2006.

Hong Kong's Cantonese-speaking majority originate mainly from the neighbouring Canton (now Guangdong) province, from which many of them fled to escape wars and Communist rule in China from the 1930s to the 1960s.
Hong Kong became a colony of the British Empire after the First Opium War (1839–42). Hong Kong Island was first ceded to the UK in perpetuity, followed by Kowloon Peninsula in 1860 and then the New Territories was put under lease in 1898. It was occupied by Japan during the Pacific War (1941–45), after which the British resumed control until 1997, when China resumed sovereignty.[15][16] The region espoused minimum government intervention under the ethos of positive non-interventionism during the colonial era.[17] The time period greatly influenced the current culture of Hong Kong, often described as "East meets West",[18] and the educational system, which used to loosely follow the system in England[19] until reforms implemented in 2009.[20]
On 1 July 1997, Hong Kong became the first Special Administrative Region of the People's Republic of China, under the principle of "one country, two systems" (the other, Macau, attained that status in December 1999). It has a different political system from mainland China.[21] Hong Kong's independent judiciary functions under the common law framework.[22][23] The Hong Kong Basic Law (its constitutional document) governs its political system, and stipulates that Hong Kong shall have a high degree of autonomy in all matters except foreign relations and military defence.[24][25] Although it has a burgeoning multi-party system, a small-circle electorate controls half of its legislature, which led to it being classified a semi-authoritarian regime[26] with highly suppressed political rights. The head of the government, the Chief Executive of Hong Kong, is chosen by an Election Committee of 400 to 1,200 members, a situation that will be in effect during the first 20 years of Chinese rule.[27][28][29]
Hong Kong is a world city. It is one of the Alpha+ cities. As Hong Kong ranks the third most important leading international financial centre, after London and New York City, Hong Kong has a major capitalist service economy characterised by low taxation and free trade, and the currency, Hong Kong dollar, is the eighth most traded currency in the world.[30] The lack of space caused demand for denser constructions, which developed the city to a centre for modern architecture and the world's most vertical city.[31][32] Hong Kong has one of the highest per capita incomes in the world but also the highest income inequality among advanced economies.[5] The dense space has also led to a highly developed transportation network with the public transport travelling rate exceeding 90 percent,[33] the highest in the world.[34] Hong Kong has numerous high international rankings in various aspects, such as its economic freedom, financial and economic competitiveness,[35] quality of life, corruption perception,[36] Human Development Index are all ranked highly. It has a different political system from mainland China.[21] Hong Kong's independent judiciary functions under the common law framework.[22][23] The Hong Kong Basic Law (its constitutional document) governs its political system, and stipulates that Hong Kong shall have a high degree of autonomy in all matters except foreign relations and military defence.[24][25] Although it has a burgeoning multi-party system, a small-circle electorate controls half of its legislature, which led to it being classified a semi-authoritarian regime[26] with highly suppressed political rights. The head of the government, the Chief Executive of Hong Kong, is chosen by an Election Committee of 400 to 1,200 members, a situation that will be in effect during the first 20 years of Chinese rule.[27][28][29]

As Hong Kong ranks the third most important leading international financial centre, after London and New York City, Hong Kong has a major capitalist service economy characterised by low taxation and free trade, and the currency, Hong Kong dollar, is the eighth most traded currency in the world.[30] The lack of space caused demand for denser constructions, which developed the city to a centre for modern architecture and the world's most vertical city.[31][32] Hong Kong has one of the highest per capita incomes in the world but also the highest income inequality among advanced economies.[5] The dense space has also led to a highly developed transportation network with the public transport travelling rate exceeding 90 percent,[33] the highest in the world.[34] Hong Kong has numerous high international rankings in various aspects, such as its economic freedom, financial and economic competitiveness,[35] quality of life, corruption perception,[36] Human Development Index are all ranked highly. According to estimates from both UN and WHO, Hong Kong had the longest life expectancy of any region in the world in 2012.[37] However, air pollution and smog is a serious problem[38] with loose emission standards compared to other advanced economies.
