Any Day Without Warning gives an inside look at the preparations that Pacific Bell had made and continued to make for a major disaster.
The film gives in-depth details about how the phone company would recover from a major earthquake, including the resources the company would draw on for restoration of any service taken out by a disaster. It's meant to reassure the film's viewers that the phone company was as prepared as it could be, with extensive contingency plans, ability to mobilize phone workers from across the entire country, and squadrons of mobile phone centers on call.
Another major part of disaster recovery, is how a NOC (network operations center) monitors the phone grid to see which areas are out, and where to reroute calls. The film looks at a regional west coast NOC, including the huge switching centers that are the hubs of the telephone grid, which have been seismically reinforced repeatedly (using new technologies) over the years to anticipate terrible quakes.
Since this film was made in 1979, there have been only two earthquakes in California considered "major": the 1989 Loma Prieta quake, and the 1994 Northridge quake. As reported in a number of sources, the damage to the phone company facilities and equipment was limited during Loma Prieta, and any failures of the phone system were the result of backup power systems failing, or insufficient backup power. The call volume to the 415 and 408 area codes on the day after the quake as enormous—more than 27 million calls, when the usual daily volume was around 3.5 million. And 9.5 million of those calls reached their destination; basically the system was stretched to its limit at the time, and the company found out what that limit was. For the Northridge quake a few years later, the damage to the telephone network in the area was relatively minimal—less than 1% of facilities in the immediate area was impaired, and the network never went down. At the time of that quake, Pacific Bell performed regular earthquake drills for employees. Today, AT&T; maintains an extensive disaster recovery team, that perform scheduled recovery exercises around the world a number of times per year.

Pacific Bell High School.
Filled with different cliques and whatnot. Their schedules consist of the same thing; kiss ass, be popular, not care, or try to live by with no problems.
But, there are a group of students that, with the littlest effort, happen to be the talk of the school.
Want to know who they are? Well I'll give you some clues. There's the. . .
Cool one who won't take any bullshit.
New kid who's well reserved.
One with the short-temper who everybody's scared off
The optimistic who thinks way too positive
The school barbie with a secret
And the nerd who just wanted to get by with his life.
These students will teach you a thing or two on what it's really like to just be high school students; some with secrets, some with crushes, and some who just want to make sure they get the best in life.
These specfic students have a relation with each other that brings them together, and if you want to find out what it is, you'll just have to turn the page.
Enjoy your read ;).
Oh, and don't forget; everybody has a story.

Caught this Union Pacific manifest passing 28th Street railroad crossing on the UPRR Martinez Subdivision in Sacramento at 2:53 PM coming off the UPRR Sac Sub. The northern part of the Sac Sub today was very active due to the Valley Sub being out of service. The bell on the signal on the other side was replaced with a WCH Mechanical Bell after the Safetran Mechanical bell died. That signal originally had a Safetran Mechanical Bell that was replaced with a GS Type 1 E-Bell then the GS Type 1 burned out and was replaced with another Safetran Mechanical Bell and then that bell died and now a WCH mechanical bell is in the spot where those bells were. At least now the bells are matching at this crossing. The construction near here is for a new neighborhood being built. Also further down the tracks to the right UPRR is building a shoofly track because they are putting in a new street to the new neighborhood that is going to be grade separated from the tracks. More Info Below.

Caught this UP Local freight train on the UPRR Sacramento Subdivision heading to the South Sac Siding passing me at at the Meadowview Road Railroad Crossing at 1:38 PM. This is a Rare catch because the Sacramento part of the Sac Sub hasn't seen a local freight train in years. This local usually goes only up to Thornton, Ca on the Sac Sub then back to Stockton yard in Stockton. For some reason today it came all the was down to the South Sacramento Siding then went back to Stockton. Theirs oil tanker cars so it looks like it went to the Laguna Oil and Wastewater Plant to pick and drop off railcars that's before Meadowview Rd and then headed farther north to the South Sac Siding for some reason. Also caught the Sacramento Regional Transit Light Rail on the new part of the SACRT Blue Line passing Meadowview Rd railroad crossing. This part of the light rail was built in early 2015 and opened in August 2015. The WCH Mechanical Bell died once again for the fifth time after being fixed a month ago. I really wish UP would put an Electronic Bell their now or a working mechanical bell here because this dying bay is really annoying. From what I wish the Electronic Bells they put here are one a used Safetran Type 1 Electronic Bell, two a WCH Electronic Bell, and three a Safetran Type 2 Electronic Bell. Those are the bells in order from which I would like the most to be put on this signal. I wish the Safetran type 1 the most because it's a Rare bell and a crossing recently had one installed in the area. Second the WCH Electronic Bell because it's more UPRR Representative for crossings because a lot of UP Crossings have them and then threw a Safetran Type 2 because the sound would sound great at this crossing with Safetrans ringing with GS type 2s. The biggest chance electronic bell to replace the mechanical bell here would be a NEG Electronic bell because UPRR is starting to use that more now. I also wish they would replace it with another mechanical bell because on crossing had a mechanical bell be replace with another at a crossing here. More Info Below.

Chief of Naval Operations Adm. John Richardson speaks to U.S. Navy service members and attendees during an Honors and Heritage ceremony celebrating the Navy's 240th birthday at the Pearl Harbor Visitor Center. The ceremony featured the traditional ringing of the USS Arizona bell, which was tolled eight times to signal the end of the watch, and the end of the current birthday year. After a reading of the Navy’s traditional heritage message, the bell was rung a ninth and final time to signify the start of a new watch and the beginning of a new year in the Navy’s history.

Caught this UP northbound manifest passing Fruitridge Rd at 1:54PM today. About a month ago this Griswold bell was ticking instead of ringing and then it died. "The Fair Had Everything , When You Tired Of The Auto Racing , You Could Always Watch The Camels Run"... and so begins the "The Innocent Fair": a documentary of amazing rare nitrate film footage from the Panama-Pacific exposition shot in San Francisco 1915. The clips include John Phillip Sousa, Mayor James Rolph Jr, Fatty Arbuckle and numerous visitors. There are shots of patriotic parades, the Liberty Bell, polo matches, stunt bi-planes over Chrissy Field, costumed vikings, the Daffodil Girls of Santa Cruz, and info on the 30 grand pavilions that lined the waterfront where the current Marina District of San Francisco is now. The program, which closes with footage of the last remaining pavilion, The Palace of Fine Arts, was credited with saving the structure from demolition. It has since been restored and is a popular spot for wedding photography to this day almost 100 years since its temporary construction. The historical silent film footage was found in 1961 in Tiburon and Ray Hubbard wrote and produced it for KPIX TV with help from Lee Mendelson . R.E. Pusey edited, Walter Johnson narrated it for broadcast.

Islamic Scholar, Nadir Ahmed, challenged Eric Allen Bell to a debate in 2012. The mutually agreed upon topic was "Is Islam Inherently Violent?"
This video is at times very shocking as you will see first hand how Islamic Scholars not only admit that the Prophet Muhammad did in fact have sex with a 9 year old girl, but their defense for this type of pedophilia is that it was "consensual".
This debate was held on The Jamie Glazov Show, which can be heard every Tuesday night at 8 pm Pacific on BlogTalk Radio.

Kevin Mitnick visits Google's NYC office to discuss his book "Ghost in the Wires: My Adventures as the World's Most Wanted Hacker" with Eran Feigenbaum, Google's Director of Security for Google Apps. This event took place on August 17, 2011, as part of the Authors@Google series.
Kevin Mitnick was the most elusive computer break-in artist in history. He accessed computers and networks at the world's biggest companies--and however fast the authorities were, Mitnick was faster, sprinting through phone switches, computer systems, and cellular networks. He spent years skipping through cyberspace, always three steps ahead and labeled unstoppable. But for Kevin, hacking wasn't just about technological feats-it was an old fashioned confidence game that required guile and deception to trick the unwitting out of valuable information.
Driven by a powerful urge to accomplish the impossible, Mitnick bypassed security systems and blazed into major organizations including Motorola, Sun Microsystems, and Pacific Bell. But as the FBI's net began to tighten, Kevin went on the run, engaging in an increasingly sophisticated cat and mouse game that led through false identities, a host of cities, plenty of close shaves, and an ultimate showdown with the Feds, who would stop at nothing to bring him down.
Ghost in the Wires is a thrilling true story of intrigue, suspense, and unbelievable escape, and a portrait of a visionary whose creativity, skills, and persistence forced the authorities to rethink the way they pursued him, inspiring ripples that brought permanent changes in the way people and companies protect their most sensitive information.

Major tensions are building in the Asia-Pacific region and while many are quick to point out the geopolitical and economic reasons for these tensions, few are contributing to a discussion on how to avoid conflict through compromise and cooperation. Based upon current Chinese-language sources, this book explores how to get to bi-lateral and regional policies through a series of compromise and accommodation that build upon many mutually shared interests.

Beginning at Pearl Harbor with the day of infamy that saw the sinking of the USS ARIZONA and ending on the deck of the USS MISSOURI in Tokyo Bay, many of the key battles of World War II were waged on and near American shores and throughout the Pacific. In commemoration of this pivotal period in our Nation's history, the World War II Valor in the Pacific National Monument adds nine historic sites to our national heritage of monuments and memorials representing various aspects of the war in the Pacific.
The monument was created on December 5, 2008, through an executive order issued by President George W. Bush under the authority of the Antiquities Act of 1906. The proclamation date was selected in anticipation of the 67th anniversary of the Attack on Pearl Harbor, on December 7, 2008.
The Visitor Center operated by the National Park Service is free to the public and has a museum with exhibits about the Pearl Harbor attack, such as the ship's bell from the Arizona. The Pacific Historic Parks Bookstore revenue helps support the museum.
Access to the USS Arizona Memorial is by U.S. Navy boat, for which a numbered ticket, obtained at the Visitor Center and valid for a designated departure time, is required. The memorial is visited by more than one million people annually. Because of the large number of visitors and the limited number of boat departures, the 4,500 tickets available each day are often fully allocated by mid-morning. Before boarding the boat for the short trip to the Memorial, a 23-minute documentary film depicting the attack on Pearl Harbor is presented. Touring of the Memorial is self-guided. The National Park Service Web site provides visitor information, including hours of operation and ticketing advisories.
A one-hour audio tour of the Memorial and Center exhibits, narrated by actress Jamie Lee Curtis, whose father is a World War II and Navy veteran, is available for rent at the Visitor Center. On the Center's grounds along the shoreline are more exhibits and a "Remembrance Circle". Nearby is USS Bowfin, a World War II Diesel submarine, which may be toured with separate, paid admission. The battleship USS Missouri and the Pacific Aviation Museum Pearl Harbor may also be visited, but require a bus ride to Ford Island.
Every President of the United States since Franklin D. Roosevelt, and both Emperors Hirohito and Akihito, have visited the site.

Terence McKenna's Last Trip
The "altered statesman" emerged from Leary's long shadow to push a magical blend of psychedelics, technology, and revelatory rap. He had less time than he knew.
By Erik Davis
In May 1999, the psychedelic bard Terence McKenna returned to his jungle hideaway on Hawaii's Big Island after six weeks on the road. He was relieved to be home. Since claiming the mantle of Tripster King from Timothy Leary, McKenna has earned his keep as a stand-up shaman on the lecture circuit, regaling groups of psychonauts, seekers, and boho intellectuals with tales involving mushrooms, machine consciousness, and the approaching end of history. Weird stuff, and wonderfully told. But the teller was getting tired of the routine. A recluse at heart, McKenna wanted nothing more than to surf the Web, read, polish up some manuscripts, and enjoy the mellow pace of Hawaii with his new girlfriend, Christy Silness, a kind young woman he had met the year before at an ethnobotanical conference in the Yucatán.
Soon after McKenna arrived home, however, he was hit with ferocious headaches. He'd long suffered from migraines, but nothing in his 52 years could match the ice picks now skewering his skull. On May 22, after dragging himself to the john to vomit, McKenna's mind exploded. Hallucinations cut in like shards of glass; taste and smell were bent out of shape; and he was swallowed up by a labyrinth that, as he later put it, "somehow partook of last week's dreams, next week's fears, and a small restaurant in Dublin." Then his blood pressure dropped and he collapsed, the victim of a brain seizure.
When McKenna came to, he was flat on his back, staring at the ceiling as his extremely agitated girlfriend called 911. Then he swooned again. In addition to being much younger than McKenna, Silness is also much shorter, but somehow she managed to load his lanky, 6'2" frame into their truck and drive down the mountain to meet an ambulance. To keep McKenna awake, she coaxed him into reciting a poem his grandfather used to chant, "The Cremation of Sam McGee." But then a grand mal hit, and McKenna was out cold.
The ambulance guys knew McKenna's rep and were convinced he had OD'd. But a CAT scan in Kona revealed the presence of a walnut-sized tumor buried deep in McKenna's right frontal cortex. The growth was diagnosed as a glioblastoma multiforme (GBM), the most malignant of brain tumors. To McKenna's amazement, his doctor described the thing as a "fruiting body" that sent "mycelia" throughout the surrounding tissue - mycological lingo straight out of theMagic Mushroom Grower's Guide that McKenna had published in 1975 with his brother, Dennis, an ethnobotanist. The rest was less amusing: Without treatment, McKenna would die within a month. With treatment, the prognosis was six months. "No one escapes," said the doctor.
McKenna was facing something that no shaman's rattle or peyote button was going to cure. With barely time to breathe, he had to choose from among chemotherapy, radiation treatment, and the gamma knife - a machine that could blast the tumor with 201 converging beams of cobalt radiation.
At the same time, friends and comrades were stalking more ethereal treatments. On the Big Island, Hali Makua, a Grand Kahuna of Polynesia, hiked up the side of the Mauna Loa volcano. He meditated about McKenna and was illuminated with a handful of Hawaiian power words, words that he later phoned in to his ailing friend.
From the wilds of Nevada, paranormal radio jock Art Bell was planning a different kind of intervention. Bell went on the air and asked his 13 million listeners to participate in "great experiment no. 8." At 2 pm Pacific time on Sunday, May 30, Bell's listeners sent McKenna a mass blast of good vibrations. "It's not something I really believe in," says McKenna. "But I am much more sympathetic to the idea of a huge morphogenetic field affecting your health than the idea that one inspired healer could do it."
Even after he went under the gamma knife, McKenna couldn't quite believe what was happening to him. "There are only about 1,000 of these GBMs a year, so it's a rare disease. I never won anything before - why now?" Like everybody else, he suspected a lifetime of exotic drug use may have been to blame.
"So what about it?" he asked his doctors. "You wanna hammer on me about that?" They assured him there was no causal link.
"So what about 35 years of daily dope smoking?" he asked. They pointed to studies suggesting that cannabis may actually shrink tumors.
"Listen," McKenna told them, "if cannabis shrinks tumors, we would not be having this conversation."
