"Zachary Taylor" on this segment of the President's Day episode of Kentucky Life on KET.
Despite the fact that Louisiana is considered his home state, Zachary Taylor, who was president from 1849-1850, has many ties to Kentucky. Born in Virginia in 1785, he was raised here on a farm two miles east of Louisville, on Muddy Fork of Beargrass Creek. He married in Kentucky and five of his six children were born here.
In later life, his home was in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, where he was a slaveholder with a cotton plantation in Mississippi. A career military man, "Old Rough and Ready" became a national hero in the Mexican-American War—and a perfect choice for presidential candidate among Southerners.
After Taylor was elected president in 1848, he surprised everyone by rejecting the extension of slavery into those territories recently taken from Mexico. Kentucky's Henry Clay came up with a compromise, proposing that California be admitted as a free state and the other territories be allowed to have slavery. Taylor remained opposed, so much so that the old general threatened to lead the Army against Southern secessionists.
A compromise was still under debate when Taylor died unexpectedly on July 9, 1850, after a brief but severe gastrointestinal illness. Official word from his doctors was that he died of cholera. Taylor's body was taken back home to Louisville for burial in the family cemetery.
However, for over a century afterward, some historians wondered if Taylor's political enemies had poisoned him with arsenic. His body was exhumed in 1991 and the Kentucky coroner, Dr. George Nichols, said it was his opinion that Taylor died of natural causes, not arsenic poisoning.
Today, the Zachary Taylor National Cemetery in Louisville is the final resting place for thousands of soldiers.

Except that Taylor was the 2nd, and last, Whig elected to the Presidency and the 2nd Whig president to die suddenly early in his first term. And the failure of the Whigs to develop into a full alternative to the Democrats in the two decades leading up to the Civil War is a major cause of that conflict. So these two medical accidents, small and random in themselves, contributed to it as well."

Zachary Taylor (November 24, 1784 – July 9, 1850) was the 12th President of the United States (1849–1850) and an American military leader. Initially uninterested in politics, Taylor ran as a Whig in the 1848 presidential election, defeating Lewis Cass. He was a planter and slaveholder based in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.
Known as "Old Rough and Ready," Taylor had a 40-year military career in the United States Army, serving in the War of 1812, the Black Hawk War, and the Second Seminole War. He achieved fame leading American troops to victory in the Battle of Palo Alto and the Battle of Monterrey during the Mexican–American War.
As president, Taylor angered many Southerners by taking a moderate stance on the issue of slavery. He urged settlers in New Mexico and California to bypass the territorial stage and draft constitutions for statehood, setting the stage for the Compromise of 1850.
Taylor died July 9, 1850, 16 months after his inauguration; the third-shortest tenure of any President. He is thought to have died of gastroenteritis. President Taylor was succeeded by his Vice President, Millard Fillmore.

Judge Roy Bean: The last time that bear ate a lawyer, he had the runs for thirty-three days.
Rev. Mr. LaSalle: That was the first and last time I saw Judge Roy Bean. I never got back to that country and died of dysentery in old Mexico. I haven't seen him since, so he probably went to Hell.
Judge Roy Bean: Ordinarily, I'd take you in my court and try you and hang you. But if you've got money for whiskey, I guess we can dispense with those proceedings.
Judge Roy Bean: Do you have anything to say before we find you guilty?::Sam Dodd: I'm not guilty of nothing. Except that Taylor was the 2nd, and last, Whig elected to the Presidency and the 2nd Whig president to die suddenly early in his first term. And the failure of the Whigs to develop into a full alternative to the Democrats in the two decades leading up to the Civil War is a major cause of that conflict. Despite the fact that Louisiana is considered his home state, Zachary Taylor, who was president from 1849-1850, has many ties to Kentucky. Born in Virginia in 1785, he was raised here on a farm two miles east of Louisville, on Muddy Fork of Beargrass Creek. He married in Kentucky and five of his six children were born here.
In later life, his home was in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, where he was a slaveholder with a cotton plantation in Mississippi. A career military man, "Old Rough and Ready" became a national hero in the Mexican-American War—and a perfect choice for presidential candidate among Southerners.
After Taylor was elected president in 1848, he surprised everyone by rejecting the extension of slavery into those territories recently taken from Mexico. Kentucky's Henry Clay came up with a compromise, proposing that California be admitted as a free state and the other territories be allowed to have slavery. Taylor remained opposed, so much so that the old general threatened to lead the Army against Southern secessionists.
A compromise was still under debate when Taylor died unexpectedly on July 9, 1850, after a brief but severe gastrointestinal illness. Official word from his doctors was that he died of cholera. Taylor's body was taken back home to Louisville for burial in the family cemetery.
However, for over a century afterward, some historians wondered if Taylor's political enemies had poisoned him with arsenic. His body was exhumed in 1991 and the Kentucky coroner, Dr. George Nichols, said it was his opinion that Taylor died of natural causes, not arsenic poisoning.
Today, the Zachary Taylor National Cemetery in Louisville is the final resting place for thousands of soldiers.
