Samuel Moore "Sam" Walton (March 29, 1918 – April 5, 1992) was an American businessman and entrepreneur best known for founding the retailers Walmart and Sam's Club.
Sam Walton was born to Tom Gibson Walton and Nancy Lee, in Kingfisher, Oklahoma. He lived there with his parents on their farm until 1923. However, farming did not provide enough money to raise a family, and Thomas Walton went into farm mortgaging. He worked for his brother's Walton Mortgage Company, which was an agent for Metropolitan Life Insurance[3][4] where he foreclosed on farms during the Great Depression.[5]
He and his family (now with another son, James, born in 1921) moved from Oklahoma to Orlando, Florida. There they moved from one small town to another for several years. While attending eighth grade in Shelbina, Missouri, Sam became the youngest Eagle Scout in the state's history.[6] In adult life, Walton became a recipient of the Distinguished Eagle Scout Award from the Boy Scouts of America.[7]
Eventually the family moved to Columbia, Missouri. Growing up during the Great Depression, Walton had numerous chores to help make financial ends meet for his family as was common at the time. He milked the family cow, bottled the surplus, and drove it to customers. Afterwards, he would deliver Columbia Daily Tribune newspapers on a paper route. In addition, he also sold magazine subscriptions.[8] Upon graduating from David H. Hickman High School in Columbia, he was voted "Most Versatile Boy".
After high school, Walton decided to attend college, hoping to find a better way to help support his family. He attended the University of Missouri as an ROTC cadet. During this time, he worked various odd jobs, including waiting tables in exchange for meals. Also during his time in college, Walton joined the Zeta Phi chapter of Beta Theta Pi fraternity. He was also tapped by QEBH, the well-known secret society on campus honoring the top senior men, and the national military honor society Scabbard and Blade. Additionally, Walton served as President of Burall Bible Class, a large class of students from the University of Missouri and Stephens College.[9] Upon graduating in 1940 with a Bachelor's of Economics, he was voted "permanent president" of the class.[10]
Walton joined J. C. Penney as a management trainee in Des Moines, Iowa,[10] three days after graduating from college.[8] This position paid him $75 a month. Walton spent approximately 18 months with J. C. Penney.[11] He resigned in 1942 in anticipation of being inducted into the military for service in World War II.[8] In the meantime, he worked at a DuPont munitions plant near Tulsa, Oklahoma. Soon afterwards, Walton joined the military in the U.S. Army Intelligence Corps, supervising security at aircraft plants and prisoner of war camps. In this position he served at Fort Douglas in Salt Lake City, Utah. He eventually reached the rank of Captain.
In 1945, after leaving the military, Walton took over management of his first variety store at the age of 26. With the help of a $20,000 loan from his father-in-law, plus $5,000 he had saved from his time in the Army, Walton purchased a Ben Franklin variety store in Newport, Arkansas.[8] The store was a franchise of the Butler Brothers chain.
Walton pioneered many concepts that became crucial to his success. Walton made sure the shelves were consistently stocked with a wide range of goods. His second store, the tiny "Eagle" department store, was down the street from his first Ben Franklin and next door to its main competitor in Newport.
With the sales volume growing from $80,000 to $225,000 in three years, Walton drew the attention of the landlord, P. K. Holmes, whose family had a history in retail.[1] Admiring Sam's great success, and desiring to reclaim the store (and franchise rights) for his son, he refused to renew the lease. The lack of a renewal option, together with the prohibitively high rent of 5% of sales, were early business lessons to Walton. Despite forcing Walton out, Holmes bought the store's inventory and fixtures for $50,000, which Walton called "a fair price".

My name is Evan Carmichael and I believe that the fastest and most effective way to build a business is to model the strategies of people who have already done what you're trying to do. I call it Modeling the Masters. My last post with over 30 comments was 3 Business Lessons from George Foreman.
Today we're going to take a closer look at how a farm boy from Oklahoma wanted to pursue a Master's degree but couldn't afford. In urgent need of money he opened up his first retail store and would eventually become the richest man in North America. This is the story of Wal-Mart founder Sam Walton and the top 3 lessons that you can learn from his success.

Sam Walton (born March 29, 1918) is an American entrepreneur that built Wal-Mart, the largest retail chain store in the world. He started out as a farm boy and became the richest man in America in the 1980s. From the farmlands of Oklahoma, Walton began his journey in life. His father, Thomas, was a farmer that felt he could not raise his family on the money being brought in from the farm, so he would pack everyone up and move the family to Missouri. There Thomas would become a farm loan appraiser.
Even though this job meant that the Walton family would travel all over Missouri, Sam Walton would not be discouraged. He would also excel at academics and sports, leading his high school football team as quarterback to a state championship. From high school, Walton would attend the University of Missouri and achieve his bachelor's degree in economics. While getting his bachelor's degree, he would become interested in commerce. This would make him want to enroll in the Wharton School of Business, but he could not afford to attend. He would find a job at JCPenney as a manager just three days after graduating the University of Missouri, but would eventually resign this job so he would be available to join the US military.
After serving as a security officer in the US Army Intelligence Corps for three years, Walton would resign his captain's commission. In 1945, Walton would ask his father-in-law for a loan of $20,000 so he could buy his first retail store, a Ben Franklin variety store. This would start a journey that would help him develop many of the techniques he would implement in his Wal-Mart chain of stores. These remarkable chains of events would make Walton worth more than $23 billion in the 1980s and today, Wal-Mart brings in more than $300 billion annually, along with the Sam's Club franchise Walton started, which brings in more than $40 billion annually.

His father, Thomas, was a farmer that felt he could not raise his family on the money being brought in from the farm, so he would pack everyone up and move the family to Missouri. There Thomas would become a farm loan appraiser. Even though this job meant that the Walton family would travel all over Missouri, Sam Walton would not be discouraged. He would also excel at academics and sports, leading his high school football team as quarterback to a state championship. From high school, Walton would attend the University of Missouri and achieve his bachelor's degree in economics. While getting his bachelor's degree, he would become interested in commerce. This would make him want to enroll in the Wharton School of Business, but he could not afford to attend. He would find a job at JCPenney as a manager just three days after graduating the University of Missouri, but would eventually resign this job so he would be available to join the US military. After serving as a security officer in the US Army Intelligence Corps for three years, Walton would resign his captain's commission. In 1945, Walton would ask his father-in-law for a loan of $20,000 so he could buy his first retail store, a Ben Franklin variety store. This would start a journey that would help him develop many of the techniques he would implement in his Wal-Mart chain of stores. These remarkable chains of events would make Walton worth more than $23 billion in the 1980s and today, Wal-Mart brings in more than $300 billion annually, along with the Sam's Club franchise Walton started, which brings in more than $40 billion annually. Jack's escalating strange behavior raises not only the concerns of his wife, but also the FBI, who are watching him constantly. More things about his past start to unravel we find out that the suicide of his twin brother, Jimmy, brought on by post-traumatic-stress-disorder, led to Jack's creation of a drug formula. Does this formula have anything to do with the dead women? Is he being framed by a pharmaceutical giant or is Jack really a murderer? What develops is a story driven not just by the characters discovering clues to Jack's past, but also the relationships of those around Jack Peterson and the tight knit community of Greenville, Maine.

Samuel Moore "Sam" Walton (March 29, 1918 – April 5, 1992) was an American businessman and entrepreneur best known for founding the retailers Walmart and Sam's Club.
Sam Walton was born to Tom Gibson Walton and Nancy Lee, in Kingfisher, Oklahoma. He lived there with his parents on their farm until 1923. However, farming did not provide enough money to raise a family, and Thomas Walton went into farm mortgaging. He worked for his brother's Walton Mortgage Company, which was an agent for Metropolitan Life Insurance[3][4] where he foreclosed on farms during the Great Depression.[5]
He and his family (now with another son, James, born in 1921) moved from Oklahoma to Orlando, Florida. There they moved from one small town to another for several years. While attending eighth grade in Shelbina, Missouri, Sam became the youngest Eagle Scout in the state's history.[6] In adult life, Walton became a recipient of the Distinguished Eagle Scout Award from the Boy Scouts of America.[7]
Eventually the family moved to Columbia, Missouri. Growing up during the Great Depression, Walton had numerous chores to help make financial ends meet for his family as was common at the time. He milked the family cow, bottled the surplus, and drove it to customers. Afterwards, he would deliver Columbia Daily Tribune newspapers on a paper route. In addition, he also sold magazine subscriptions.[8] Upon graduating from David H. Hickman High School in Columbia, he was voted "Most Versatile Boy".
After high school, Walton decided to attend college, hoping to find a better way to help support his family. He attended the University of Missouri as an ROTC cadet. During this time, he worked various odd jobs, including waiting tables in exchange for meals. Also during his time in college, Walton joined the Zeta Phi chapter of Beta Theta Pi fraternity. He was also tapped by QEBH, the well-known secret society on campus honoring the top senior men, and the national military honor society Scabbard and Blade. Additionally, Walton served as President of Burall Bible Class, a large class of students from the University of Missouri and Stephens College.[9] Upon graduating in 1940 with a Bachelor's of Economics, he was voted "permanent president" of the class.[10]
Walton joined J. C. Penney as a management trainee in Des Moines, Iowa,[10] three days after graduating from college.[8] This position paid him $75 a month. Walton spent approximately 18 months with J. C. Penney.[11] He resigned in 1942 in anticipation of being inducted into the military for service in World War II.[8] In the meantime, he worked at a DuPont munitions plant near Tulsa, Oklahoma. Soon afterwards, Walton joined the military in the U.S. Army Intelligence Corps, supervising security at aircraft plants and prisoner of war camps. In this position he served at Fort Douglas in Salt Lake City, Utah. He eventually reached the rank of Captain.
In 1945, after leaving the military, Walton took over management of his first variety store at the age of 26. With the help of a $20,000 loan from his father-in-law, plus $5,000 he had saved from his time in the Army, Walton purchased a Ben Franklin variety store in Newport, Arkansas.[8] The store was a franchise of the Butler Brothers chain.
Walton pioneered many concepts that became crucial to his success. Walton made sure the shelves were consistently stocked with a wide range of goods. His second store, the tiny "Eagle" department store, was down the street from his first Ben Franklin and next door to its main competitor in Newport.
With the sales volume growing from $80,000 to $225,000 in three years, Walton drew the attention of the landlord, P. K. Holmes, whose family had a history in retail.[1] Admiring Sam's great success, and desiring to reclaim the store (and franchise rights) for his son, he refused to renew the lease. The lack of a renewal option, together with the prohibitively high rent of 5% of sales, were early business lessons to Walton. Despite forcing Walton out, Holmes bought the store's inventory and fixtures for $50,000, which Walton called "a fair price".

My name is Evan Carmichael and I believe that the fastest and most effective way to build a business is to model the strategies of people who have already done what you're trying to do. I call it Modeling the Masters. My last post with over 30 comments was 3 Business Lessons from George Foreman.
Today we're going to take a closer look at how a farm boy from Oklahoma wanted to pursue a Master's degree but couldn't afford. In urgent need of money he opened up his first retail store and would eventually become the richest man in North America. This is the story of Wal-Mart founder Sam Walton and the top 3 lessons that you can learn from his success.

Sam Walton (born March 29, 1918) is an American entrepreneur that built Wal-Mart, the largest retail chain store in the world. He started out as a farm boy and became the richest man in America in the 1980s. From the farmlands of Oklahoma, Walton began his journey in life. His father, Thomas, was a farmer that felt he could not raise his family on the money being brought in from the farm, so he would pack everyone up and move the family to Missouri. There Thomas would become a farm loan appraiser.
Even though this job meant that the Walton family would travel all over Missouri, Sam Walton would not be discouraged. He would also excel at academics and sports, leading his high school football team as quarterback to a state championship. From high school, Walton would attend the University of Missouri and achieve his bachelor's degree in economics. While getting his bachelor's degree, he would become interested in commerce. This would make him want to enroll in the Wharton School of Business, but he could not afford to attend. He would find a job at JCPenney as a manager just three days after graduating the University of Missouri, but would eventually resign this job so he would be available to join the US military.
After serving as a security officer in the US Army Intelligence Corps for three years, Walton would resign his captain's commission. In 1945, Walton would ask his father-in-law for a loan of $20,000 so he could buy his first retail store, a Ben Franklin variety store. This would start a journey that would help him develop many of the techniques he would implement in his Wal-Mart chain of stores. These remarkable chains of events would make Walton worth more than $23 billion in the 1980s and today, Wal-Mart brings in more than $300 billion annually, along with the Sam's Club franchise Walton started, which brings in more than $40 billion annually.
