Turi (Māori ancestor)
Turi, according to Māori tradition, was the captain of the Aotea canoe and an important ancestor for many Māori iwi, particularly in the Taranaki region.
Arrival in New Zealand
After a conflict in which he killed the son of the chief Uenuku, Turi departed for New Zealand with many others in the Aotea Canoe. This canoe had been given to Turi by Toto, father of Turi’s wife Rongorongo. In some traditions, Turi and his party stopped at Rangitāhua, believed by some to be Raoul of the Kermadec Islands, where they encountered some of the crew from the Kurahaupō canoe. Continuing on, Turi and his followers eventually arrived and settled at Aotea Harbour on the west coast of the North Island.
After some time at Aotea Harbour, Turi settled the Pātea region where he lived with his people along Pātea river. His daughter Tāneroroa married Ruanui, the eponymous ancestor of Ngāti Ruanui.

Turi (Pashtun tribe)
The Turi or Torai are a sub-tribe of the Khogyani Pashtun tribe, inhabiting the Kurram Valley, in Kurram Agency in the Federally Administered Tribal Areas of Pakistan, with a smaller number living across the Durand line in the Paktia province of Afghanistan. They speak Pashto and are adherents of the Twelver Shia sect of Islam.
History
Basically the Turis came into prominence by the end of fifteenth century. They use to wander in nomadic fashion till they came to Aryob Valley of Paktia. Being nomadic, they would seasonally migrate in the winter, cross the Kurram Valley which was back then inhabited by the Bangash, and travel as far as the Indus River. From Nilab, on the bank of Indus River near Attock, turi's appeared to have annually immigrated during the hot weather back to the Kurram Valley. The Mughal Emperor Babur mentions the Turis in Kurram in his diary of 1506.
In the 18th century, the Turi and their cousin tribe Zazi came into quarrel with the Bangash of the Kurram Valley which was then part of Durrani Empire (Kurram came under the British Raj after the Second Anglo-Afghan War of 1879-80). The Turis succeeded to capture the Paywar Pass, Shalozan and Malana, pushed the Bangash of the area southeastwards towards the Miranzai Valley, and eventually the Turis settled in the upper Kurram Valley.

Tai (elephant)
Tai (born November 4, 1968) is an Asian elephant best known for playing Bo Tat in the film Operation Dumbo Drop (1995), Vera in Larger than Life (1996) and Rosie in Water for Elephants (2011). Tai is owned by Have Trunk Will Travel, Inc., a privately funded organization that generates income through elephant rides, shows and events, as well as film and commercial appearances.
Career
Tai's first film appearance was a minor role in The Jungle Book (1994), where she scares off some poachers. Tai followed this up playing the major role of Bo Tat in Operation Dumbo Drop in 1995. The American Humane Association rated the treatment of animals in the film as acceptable. The scene in which Tai is sedated she is actually just obeying her trainers instructions to lie down. The sounds of her snoring in the film is not actually coming from Tai, but was dubbed in during post-production. All scenes that show Tai in danger were carefully staged, and the boat in which she travels in the film was pre-tested to make sure it would support her 8,000 pound weight. To ensure she remained healthy, all of Tai's food, drinking water, and even her bathing water, was shipped from the U.S. to Thailand, where filming was taking place.

Tai (comics)
Tai is a fictional character in the Marvel Comics universe. A Cambodian, Tai was something of a mentor for the New Warriors in the first 25 issues of their first series.
Fictional character biography
Tai is an elderly Cambodian mystic who was indirectly responsible for the formation of the New Warriors. Tai was born into a cult called the Dragon's Breadth. Her people derive mystical energy from a well inside their temple that was a nexus into various alternate dimensions. The temple is constructed around the nexus point where vast amounts of mystic energy are constantly released. Throughout the centuries Tai's people absorb the energy from the well. They devise a detailed program of interbreeding the goal of which was for each successive generation to be able to tap into the energies of the well more than the previous generation had and that eventually one generation would use that power to rule the world (this plan was called 'The Pact'). Tai's generation are actually able to harness the energies of the well. Tai's generation is led to believe that their generation were the ones who would rule the world. Tai refuses to share powers and slays everyone in the cult but six maiden brides and a series of guards for the temple.

Inizia la sua carriera artistica nel 1994 partecipando a varie jam sessions nei più famosi club hiphop della capitale. Due anni dopo, insieme a Piotta e Dj Squarta, fonda la crew Robba Coatta.
Dopo un intensa attività live in tutta la penisola e grazie al suo stile ironico e sarcastico, Turi si afferma come uno dei migliori intrattenitori e improvvisatori della scena hiphop italiana. Nel 1998 partecipa al primo singolo di Piotta "Spingo io". Nell'autunno dello stesso anno viene pubblicato Comunque vada sarà un successo, il primo album ufficiale di Piotta, dove Turi appare in sei tracce. Degno di nota è il brano Dimmi qual'è il nome, secondo singolo estratto, che permette al rapper calabrese di farsi notare anche in TV grazie al video girato dai Manetti Bros.
Nell'estate del 1999 produce il suo primo mini album solista Aspromonte A-roma in edizione limitata di 500 copie. Grazie al successo del brano Supercafone (disco d'oro), Turi, in compagnia di Piotta e dj Squarta partecipa ad un intenso tour promozionale di circa 90 date. Da menzionare la performance all' MTV Day 1999.
Nel 2000 recita nel film Zora la vampira, di Carlo Verdone e Manetti bros, e partecipa con il brano "D'istinto" alla soundtrack del film. Nello stesso anno collabora alla compilation hiphop Novecinquanta di Fritz Da Cat. Viene girato un videoclip a New York del suo brano Schiaffetto correttivo.
Nel 2001 Turi inizia la sua carriera solista firmando il suo primo contratto discografico con l'etichetta indipendente romana Goodymusic Production Srl. Nell'estate dello stesso anno riceve innumerevoli elogi dalla critica specializzata grazie al suo primo album Salviamo il salvabile dove, oltre ad apparire come rapper, firma anche le musiche. Nella primavera del 2004 sempre per Goodymusic Production Srl esce il suo secondo album ufficiale L'amico degli amici che contiene il singolo (con videoclip) Cosa vuoi da me.
Con il brano in questione Turi, nell'ottobre del 2005, si aggiudica il premio come "miglior singolo" all'interno della oramai nota manifestazione hiphop nazionale Mc Giaime. Nel maggio del 2006 partecipa come rapper al progetto organizzato dalla Red Bull Homegroove e dalla Royality Gli originali, un musical Hip Hop sotto la direzione musicale e l'orchestra del compositore italiano, il maestro Franco Micalizzi.

Nel 2001 Turi inizia la sua carriera solista firmando il suo primo contratto discografico con l'etichetta indipendente romana Goodymusic Production Srl. Nell'estate dello stesso anno riceve innumerevoli elogi dalla critica specializzata grazie al suo primo album Salviamo il salvabile dove, oltre ad apparire come rapper, firma anche le musiche. Nella primavera del 2004 sempre per Goodymusic Production Srl esce il suo secondo album ufficiale L'amico degli amici che contiene il singolo (con videoclip) Cosa vuoi da me.
Con il brano in questione Turi, nell'ottobre del 2005, si aggiudica il premio come "miglior singolo" all'interno della oramai nota manifestazione hiphop nazionale Mc Giaime. Nel maggio del 2006 partecipa come rapper al progetto organizzato dalla Red Bull Homegroove e dalla Royality Gli originali, un musical Hip Hop sotto la direzione musicale e l'orchestra del compositore italiano, il maestro Franco Micalizzi.

Tainui traditions about Kupe can be summarised as: Kupe stole Hoturapa's wife or wives; came to New Zealand and cut up the land; raised rough seas; and went away again.

Whanganui-Taranaki traditions can be summarised as: Kupe came looking for his wife who had been abducted by (H)oturapa. His canoe was named Mataho(u)rua; Kupe was associated with Turi as his contemporary. Kupe cut up the land, and he was a brother of Ngake. Kupe encountered rough seas on his journey. The octopus story is known, but the creature is not named. Except in later versions which are somewhat suspect as to their authenticity, the accounts do not include the episode in which Kupe chases the octopus from Hawaiki (Simmons 1976:27).

The pigeon is sent to explore the interior of the island, and encounters a fantail and a crow (kōkako). Kupe stays at Wellington harbour and names two islands Matiu and Makoro after his daughters. On his return journey, Kupe meets Turi at an island and tells him of this island. At Hawaiki. Kupe recounts his adventures (Simmons 1976:26–27).
South Island

Healing through art is an on-going process, self-conscious efforts to re-connect to one’s past to better understand their present, play out in a series of unique and often revealing episodes of self re-creation. English academic Robbie Shilliam calls this process de-colonial science, that is the shedding of blackness towards taha Māori; challenging Cartesian dualistic tendencies.
Here, painting is used as a tool both for communication and for healing. The sporadic and expressive nature of Te Marunui Hotene's paintings are influenced by the life and works of Jean Michel Basquiat. This allows for rapid mediation and documentation of points of interests in a journey of healing: textual portions of geneology, feelings of blackness, hopeful ambitions, but also, the mundane, day to day activities and peoples names. Text then intertwines often with kowhaiwhai and pattern, layered on occasion by imagery of taniwha, in a colourfully vibrant visual negotiation for space.
Poutama, refers to the tukutuku pattern of the same name. It means the ever ascending pursuit of knowledge, marking a significant point in personal development.

Inspired by a visit to the Museum of the Native American in New York City, Taaniko created Soldiers Rd Portraits in 2013 with Vienna Nordstrom. It is an original concept using modern media, props and photography to recreate vintage style Māori portraits of people today and has been recognised on an international stage. From the thousands of portraits Taaniko and Vienna have taken, these images have had a profound and positive effect on men, women, children and whanau of all cultures and backgrounds, but most particularly Māori.
In Aotearoa, Māori are significantly over-represented in the prison population and underlying themes behind this include a lack of understanding around identity, heritage, tikanga, whakapapa and kawa. Consequently Taaniko and Vienna are pleased to partner with NZ Corrections in a ground breaking pilot which aims to transform prisoner cultural identity and self perception as an innovative way to approach prison recidivism rates.

Inizia la sua carriera artistica nel 1994 partecipando a varie jam sessions nei più famosi club hiphop della capitale. Due anni dopo, insieme a Piotta e Dj Squarta, fonda la crew Robba Coatta.
Dopo un intensa attività live in tutta la penisola e grazie al suo stile ironico e sarcastico, Turi si afferma come uno dei migliori intrattenitori e improvvisatori della scena hiphop italiana. Nel 1998 partecipa al primo singolo di Piotta "Spingo io". Nell'autunno dello stesso anno viene pubblicato Comunque vada sarà un successo, il primo album ufficiale di Piotta, dove Turi appare in sei tracce. Degno di nota è il brano Dimmi qual'è il nome, secondo singolo estratto, che permette al rapper calabrese di farsi notare anche in TV grazie al video girato dai Manetti Bros.
Nell'estate del 1999 produce il suo primo mini album solista Aspromonte A-roma in edizione limitata di 500 copie. Grazie al successo del brano Supercafone (disco d'oro), Turi, in compagnia di Piotta e dj Squarta partecipa ad un intenso tour promozionale di circa 90 date. Da menzionare la performance all' MTV Day 1999.
Nel 2000 recita nel film Zora la vampira, di Carlo Verdone e Manetti bros, e partecipa con il brano "D'istinto" alla soundtrack del film. Nello stesso anno collabora alla compilation hiphop Novecinquanta di Fritz Da Cat. Viene girato un videoclip a New York del suo brano Schiaffetto correttivo.
Nel 2001 Turi inizia la sua carriera solista firmando il suo primo contratto discografico con l'etichetta indipendente romana Goodymusic Production Srl. Nella primavera del 2004 sempre per Goodymusic Production Srl esce il suo secondo album ufficiale L'amico degli amici che contiene il singolo (con videoclip) Cosa vuoi da me.
Con il brano in questione Turi, nell'ottobre del 2005, si aggiudica il premio come "miglior singolo" all'interno della oramai nota manifestazione hiphop nazionale Mc Giaime. Nel maggio del 2006 partecipa come rapper al progetto organizzato dalla Red Bull Homegroove e dalla Royality Gli originali, un musical Hip Hop sotto la direzione musicale e l'orchestra del compositore italiano, il maestro Franco Micalizzi.

The text of the Treaty includes a preamble and three articles. It is bilingual, with the Māori text inaccurately translated from the English.
• Article one of the Māori text grants governance rights to the Crown while the English text cedes "all rights and powers of sovereignty" to the Crown.

Northland
In the Northland traditions, Kupe is a discoverer and contemporary with, but older than, Nukutawhiti, the ancestor of the Ngā Puhi people. Kupe arrives, lives at Hokianga, and returns to Wawauatea, his homeland, leaving certain signs and marks of his visit (Simmons 1976:34).
Ngāti Kahungunu
Early accounts from the Ngāti Kahungunu area consistently place Kupe on board the Tākitimu canoe or name as his companions people who are strongly associated with the Tākitimu. No other canoes are mentioned in connection with him. They also contain no references to the octopus of Muturangi, nor of the chase from Hawaiki (Simmons 1976:20).
Tainui

Tainui traditions about Kupe can be summarised as: Kupe stole Hoturapa's wife or wives; came to New Zealand and cut up the land; raised rough seas; and went away again.
Whanganui-Taranaki
Whanganui-Taranaki traditions can be summarised as: Kupe came looking for his wife who had been abducted by (H)oturapa. His canoe was named Mataho(u)rua; Kupe was associated with Turi as his contemporary. Kupe cut up the land, and he was a brother of Ngake. Kupe encountered rough seas on his journey. The octopus story is known, but the creature is not named. Except in later versions which are somewhat suspect as to their authenticity, the accounts do not include the episode in which Kupe chases the octopus from Hawaiki (Simmons 1976:27).

An 1893 account by Te Whetu of Ngāti Raukawa, who was familiar with Rangitāne traditions,[28] tells of Kupe with his daughters and two birds, Rupe (pigeon) and Kawauatoru (cormorant or shag), exploring the west coast of the North Island. Kupe sends the cormorant to rest the current in the Manukau harbour, which the bird reports as weak, and in Cook Strait, which the bird reports as too strong. The pigeon is sent to explore the interior of the island, and encounters a fantail and a crow (kōkako). Kupe stays at Wellington harbour and names two islands Matiu and Makoro after his daughters. On his return journey, Kupe meets Turi at an island and tells him of this island. At Hawaiki. Kupe recounts his adventures (Simmons 1976:26–27).
South Island
The few references to Kupe in South Island sources indicate that the traditions are substantially the same as those of Ngāti Kahungunu, with whom Ngāi Tahu, the main tribe of the South Island, had strong genealogical and trading links (Simmons 1976:34).

Taumatawhakatangihangakoauauotamateaturipukakapikimaungahoronukupokaiwhenuakitanatahu is a hill near Porangahau, south of Waipukurau in southern Hawke's Bay, New Zealand. The height of the hill is 305 metres (1,001 ft). The hill is notable primarily for its unusually long name, which is of Māori origin; it is often shortened to Taumata for brevity.[2] It has gained a measure of fame as it is the longest place name found in any English-speaking country, and the second-longest place name in the world, according to Wises New Zealand Guide and The New Zealand Herald.[3] The name of the hill (with 85 characters) has also been listed in the Guinness World Records as the longest place name. Other versions of the name, including longer ones, are also sometimes used.
The name "Taumatawhakatangihangakoauauotamateaturipukakapikimaungahoronukupokaiwhen-uakitanatahu" translates roughly as "The summit where Tamatea, the man with the big knees, the slider, climber of mountains, the land-swallower who travelled about, played his nose flute to his loved one".
Some forms of the name are longer still: "Taumatawhakatangihangakoauauotamatea-urehaeaturipukakapikimaungahoronukupokaiwhenuakitanatahu" has 92 letters. An even longer version, Taumata-whakatangihanga-koauau-o-Tamatea-haumai-tawhiti-ure-haea-turi-pukaka-piki-maunga-horo-nuku-pokai-whenua-ki-tana-tahu, has 105 letters and means "The hill of the nose-flute playing by Tamatea – who was blown hither from afar, had a slit penis, grazed his knees climbing mountains, fell on the earth, and encircled the land – to his beloved one".[4]
The New Zealand Geographic Placenames Database, maintained by Land Information New Zealand (LINZ), uses the somewhat shorter (57-character) name "Taumatawhakatangi-hangakoauauotamateapokaiwhenuakitanatahu"
Tamatea-pōkai-whenua (Tamatea the explorer of the land) was the father of Kahungunu, ancestor of the Ngāti Kahungunu iwi. Mention of Tamatea's explorations of the land occur not only in Ngāti Kahungunu legends, but also in the traditions of iwi from Northland, where he is said to have explored the Hokianga and Kaipara harbours.
In traditions from the Bay of Plenty region, he left a son, Ranginui, who is the ancestor of Ngāti Ranginui of Tauranga. Legends from the East Coast of the North Island tell of his explorations in Tūranga-nui (Gisborne), Māhia, Wairoa, Ahuriri (Napier), Heretaunga (near Hastings) and Pōrangahau. He travelled via the Mangakopikopiko River, over the Tītī-o-kura saddle via Pohokura to Lake Taupo. The Ōtamatea River and swamp is named after him. Tamatea is also the name of a place in Napier.
Early South Island legends say that Tamatea sailed down the east coast. His canoe was wrecked in the far south, and transformed into Tākitimu mountain range. Tamatea then returned to the North Island, and travelled via the Whanganui River

Healing through art is an on-going process, self-conscious efforts to re-connect to one’s past to better understand their present, play out in a series of unique and often revealing episodes of self re-creation. English academic Robbie Shilliam calls this process de-colonial science, that is the shedding of blackness towards taha Māori; challenging Cartesian dualistic tendencies.
Here, painting is used as a tool both for communication and for healing. The sporadic and expressive nature of Te Marunui Hotene's paintings are influenced by the life and works of Jean Michel Basquiat. This allows for rapid mediation and documentation of points of interests in a journey of healing: textual portions of geneology, feelings of blackness, hopeful ambitions, but also, the mundane, day to day activities and peoples names. Text then intertwines often with kowhaiwhai and pattern, layered on occasion by imagery of taniwha, in a colourfully vibrant visual negotiation for space.
Poutama, refers to the tukutuku pattern of the same name. It means the ever ascending pursuit of knowledge, marking a significant point in personal development.

Inspired by a visit to the Museum of the Native American in New York City, Taaniko created Soldiers Rd Portraits in 2013 with Vienna Nordstrom. It is an original concept using modern media, props and photography to recreate vintage style Māori portraits of people today and has been recognised on an international stage. From the thousands of portraits Taaniko and Vienna have taken, these images have had a profound and positive effect on men, women, children and whanau of all cultures and backgrounds, but most particularly Māori.
In Aotearoa, Māori are significantly over-represented in the prison population and underlying themes behind this include a lack of understanding around identity, heritage, tikanga, whakapapa and kawa. Consequently Taaniko and Vienna are pleased to partner with NZ Corrections in a ground breaking pilot which aims to transform prisoner cultural identity and self perception as an innovative way to approach prison recidivism rates.
