The Tongariro Alpine Crossing in New Zealand is incredible! We made it even better with a summit of Mount Ngaurahoe (Mt Doom from Lord of the Rings) and ventured onto the Tongariro Northern Circuit Great Walk to stay one night at the Oturere hut (a few kms off the Alpine Crossing track) turning the Crossing into a 2-day walk and maximizing our adventure. If you have gear to stay overnight this is an amazing option to consider. The section between the Alpine Crossing and the Oturere hut is one of the coolest parts of the Tongariro Northern Circuit (because it looks like Mordor). Not to be taken lightly the Alpine Crossing is long at 19.4km and is a lot of up and down. Bring lots of water! Add 3 hours if you plan to tackle Mount Doom, which we highly recommend :)

Sadly, Dan and I had to bury our old fishing mate Ron Horton (1933 - 2015) last week, a great man and a great fisherman, we stopped off for a morning session on the river en-route back to Wellington to reflect on our 25 years of knowing Ron.
The fishing was great for such a short stop - dropping after an overnight fresh with no other anglers around. The Rainbows we're running 3-5lb and about a dozen fish landed each. Was also a great opportunity to test the new Sony RX100 Mk3 camera, a very impressive wee point and shoot with exceptional video quality as you can see, makes the head-cam footage look average (it's not hard to differentiate between the two)! I'm going to enjoy using this camera over the coming season.
Was also a great opportunity to stretch the legs of Scott's new Meridian 906/4 NZ Special fly rod matched with a Airflo HERO taper - pretty much perfection as a combo for this river, the long belly of the HERO makes for superb line control and mending, not to mention roll casting, which it does with ease.
We're lucky to have great fishing year round on this river, certainly breaks the winter blues!

Footage from a weekend on New Zealand's Tongariro River, this river, after a disappointing 6-7 years is back to it's full glory with large FAT Rainbows galore! The river you will notice goes from clear to dirty and back to clear as Genesis Energy flush the dam during the weekend. Well over 120 fish hooked and around 80-90 landed between two anglers, the average size around 2kgs (4.4lb) up to just over 3kgs (7lb).
Tackle used is relatively light, 6 weight gear, and constant roll casting with long leaders and heavy flies saw the downfall of my Sage yet again in exactly the same place as 12 months prior! The Tongariro River is located 4 hours drive from New Zealand's capital city, Wellington where I live.

Journey into Mordor on New Zealand's Tongariro Northern Circuit Great Walk! This track takes you up an active volcano and through the lava flows of Mt Doom (Mount Ngauruhoe). We walked it in October with 70km/hr winds and some poor visibility which just made it more interesting! :)

Mount Tongariro
Mount Tongariro (/ˈtɒŋɡəˌrɛ.roʊ/; Māori pronunciation: [tɔŋaɾiɾɔ]) is a compound volcano in the Taupo Volcanic Zone of the North Island of New Zealand. It is located 20 kilometres (12 mi) to the southwest of Lake Taupo, and is the northernmost of the three active volcanoes that dominate the landscape of the central North Island.
Geology
The volcanic massif, often referred to as simply Tongariro, has a height of 1,978 metres (6,490 ft). It first erupted 275,000 years ago. The volcano consists of at least 12 cones. Ngauruhoe, while often regarded as a separate mountain, is geologically a cone of Tongariro. It is also the most active vent, having erupted more than 70 times since 1839, the last episode in 1973 to 1975.
Activity has also been recorded at other vents in recent history. Te Māri Craters erupted in 2012, for the first time since 1897. Red Crater last erupted ash in 1926 and contains active fumaroles. There are many explosion craters on the massif; water has filled some of these to form the Blue Lake and the Emerald Lakes.

The Tongariro Alpine Crossing in New Zealand is incredible! We made it even better with a summit of Mount Ngaurahoe (Mt Doom from Lord of the Rings) and ventured onto the Tongariro Northern Circuit Great Walk to stay one night at the Oturere hut (a few kms off the Alpine Crossing track) turning the Crossing into a 2-day walk and maximizing our adventure. If you have gear to stay overnight this is an amazing option to consider. The section between the Alpine Crossing and the Oturere hut is one of the coolest parts of the Tongariro Northern Circuit (because it looks like Mordor). Not to be taken lightly the Alpine Crossing is long at 19.4km and is a lot of up and down. Bring lots of water! Add 3 hours if you plan to tackle Mount Doom, which we highly recommend :)

Sadly, Dan and I had to bury our old fishing mate Ron Horton (1933 - 2015) last week, a great man and a great fisherman, we stopped off for a morning session on the river en-route back to Wellington to reflect on our 25 years of knowing Ron.
The fishing was great for such a short stop - dropping after an overnight fresh with no other anglers around. The Rainbows we're running 3-5lb and about a dozen fish landed each. Was also a great opportunity to test the new Sony RX100 Mk3 camera, a very impressive wee point and shoot with exceptional video quality as you can see, makes the head-cam footage look average (it's not hard to differentiate between the two)! I'm going to enjoy using this camera over the coming season.
Was also a great opportunity to stretch the legs of Scott's new Meridian 906/4 NZ Special fly rod matched with a Airflo HERO taper - pretty much perfection as a combo for this river, the long belly of the HERO makes for superb line control and mending, not to mention roll casting, which it does with ease.
We're lucky to have great fishing year round on this river, certainly breaks the winter blues!

Footage from a weekend on New Zealand's Tongariro River, this river, after a disappointing 6-7 years is back to it's full glory with large FAT Rainbows galore! The river you will notice goes from clear to dirty and back to clear as Genesis Energy flush the dam during the weekend. Well over 120 fish hooked and around 80-90 landed between two anglers, the average size around 2kgs (4.4lb) up to just over 3kgs (7lb).
Tackle used is relatively light, 6 weight gear, and constant roll casting with long leaders and heavy flies saw the downfall of my Sage yet again in exactly the same place as 12 months prior! The Tongariro River is located 4 hours drive from New Zealand's capital city, Wellington where I live.

Tongariro National Park is the oldest national park in New Zealand, located in the central North Island. It has been acknowledged by UNESCO as one of the 28 mixed cultural and natural World Heritage Sites.
Tongariro National Park was the fourth national park established in the world. The active volcanic mountains Ruapehu, Ngauruhoe, and Tongariro are located in the centre of the park.
There are a number of Māori religious sites within the park and the summits of Tongariro, including Ngauruhoe and Ruapehu, are tapu (sacred). The park includes many towns around its boundary including Ohakune, Waiouru, Horopito, Pokaka, Erua, National Park Village, Whakapapa skifield and Turangi.

Tongariro National Park covers approximately 795.98 km² stretching between 175° 22' and 175° 48' East and 38° 58' and 39° 25' South in the heart of the North Island of New Zealand. It is just a few kilometres west-southwest of Lake Taupo. It is 330 km south of Auckland by road, and 320 km north of Wellington. It contains a considerable part of the North Island Volcanic Plateau. Directly to the east stand the hills of the Kaimanawa range. The Whanganui River rises within the park and flows through Whanganui National Park to the west.
Most of the park is located in the Ruapehu District (Manawatu-Wanganui Region), although the northeast is in the Taupo District (Waikato Region, or Hawke's Bay region to the north).
As a curiosity, their exact antipodes coincide with Cabañeros National Park, in Spain.

Within the park borders, the only settlements are the tourism-based village at Whakapapa Village which consists solely of ski accommodation. Two Maori kainga (settlements) Papakai and Otukou are not part of the park but lie on the shores of Lake Rotoaira between the Pihanga Scenic Reserve and the main park area.
The bulk of Tongariro National Park is surrounded by well-maintained roads that roughly follow the park borders and provide easy access. In the west, State Highway 4 passes National Park village, and in the east, State Highway 1, known for this stretch as the Desert Road, runs parallel to the Tongariro River. State Highway 47 joins these two highways to the north of much of the park, although it bisects the Pihanga Scenic Reserve. The southern link is State Highway 49. The North Island Main Trunk railway from Auckland to Wellington passes National Park village.
