"Ma" Rainey (born Gertrude Malissa Nix Pridgett; c. April 26, 1886 – December 22, 1939) was one of the earliest known American professional blues singers and one of the first generation of such singers to record. She was billed as The Mother of the Blues.
She began performing as a young teenager (between the ages of 12 and 14), and performed under the name Ma Rainey after she and Will Rainey were married in 1904. They toured with the Rabbit Foot Minstrels and later formed their own group called Rainey and Rainey, Assassinators of the Blues. From the time of her first recording in 1923 to five years later, Ma Rainey made over 100 recordings, including "Bo-weevil Blues" (1923), "Moonshine Blues" (1923), "See See Rider Blues" (1924), "Black Bottom" (1927), and "Soon This Morning" (1927).
Ma Rainey was known for her very powerful vocal abilities, energetic disposition, majestic phrasing, and a ‘moaning’ style of singing. Her powerful voice was never adequately captured on her records, due to her recording exclusively for Paramount, which was at the time known for its below-average recording techniques and poor shellac quality. However, Rainey's other qualities are present and most evident in her early recordings, "Bo-weevil Blues" and "Moonshine Blues".
Prove It may refer to:
Blues is a genre and musical form that originated in African-American communities in the "Deep South" of the United States around the end of the 19th century. The genre developed from roots in traditional African music, combined with European American folk music. Blues incorporated spirituals, work songs, field hollers, shouts, and chants, and rhymed simple narrative ballads. The blues form, ubiquitous in jazz, rhythm and blues and rock and roll, is characterized by the call-and-response pattern, the blues scale and specific chord progressions, of which the twelve-bar blues is the most common. The blue notes (or "worried notes") which are often thirds or fifths which are flatter in pitch than in other music styles, are also an important part of the sound. Blues shuffles or walking bass reinforce the trance-like rhythm and form a repetitive effect called a groove.
Blues as a genre possesses other characteristics such as lyrics, bass lines, and instruments. The lyrics of early traditional blues verses consisted of a single line repeated four times. It was only in the first decades of the 20th century that the most common current structure became standard: the so-called AAB pattern, consisting of a line sung over the four first bars, its repetition over the next four, and then a longer concluding line over the last bars. Early blues frequently took the form of a loose narrative, often relating troubles experienced within African American society.
"On Me" is a song by American West Coast hip hop artist The Game, taken from his sixth studio album, The Documentary 2 (2015). It was produced by Bongo and Pops and features guest appearances by Kendrick Lamar.
Black Bottom can refer to several things. In many cities, the term has been used to describe African American neighborhoods.

Ma Rainey's "Prove It On Me Blues," 1928 Gertrude "Ma" Rainey's Amazing Resistance Anthem by Jonathan Ned Katz Unique in pre-Stonewall American history is an assertive song of lesbian self-affirmation and defiance, "Prove It on Me Blues." Written, performed, and recorded in 1928 by the famous early blues singer Ma Rainey, this extraordinary song of resistance features a woman-loving woman who proclaims her sexual interest in females and challenges the world to "prove it on me." Sung in the first person by Rainey in the character of a collar-and-tie-wearing, man-disdaining butch, "Prove It on Me Blues" is a rare and wonderful rebel anthem. How did the amazing "Prove It on Me Blues" come to be written and recorded? The answer is found in Mother of the Blues by Sandra Lieb (University of M...

Gretrude Pridget "Ma Rainey". American treasure. Classic Blues Singer. Icon. Ma Rainey has gotten little to no recognition by the mainstream community over the years. She is the least mentioned for a woman who has made such a major contribution to music. In speaking with various people about Ma Rainey, most were unfamiliar with her. They don't quite have a mental image of her, no reference point in film, TV, pint or media… Strangely, nearly all had heard of Bessie Smith which I found curious considering Ma was Bessie’s mentor. My surmise led me on a mission to tell her story. I first saw her as the star of the sitcom, "That's My Mama," but Ms. Merritt had a long theatrical career from being picked by Billy Rose for the original production "Carmen Jones' to being nominated for a Tony the year we did this for "Ma Rainey's Black Bottom" and she referred to her competition as "Stockyard Channing." This is raw footage; today I would have very different questions.

From Ma Rainey's Black Bottom to Fences to Seven Guitars, August Wilson's work is built on musicality and movement, both literally and poetically. Dramatists, scholars and historians of dance and music will consider the playwright's American Century Cycle in relation to these aesthetics. WQXR's Terrance McKnight will explore the polyrhythmic framework of these two performance aesthetics in a discussion with choreographer/dancer Ken Robeson, who choreographed Signature Theatre's 2006 production of Seven Guitars and Bill Sims Jr., renowned American blues musician and composer of original music for Wilson's Seven Guitars and Jitney.

Black cat on my doorstep, black cat on my windowsill
Black cat on my doorstep, black cat on my windowsill
If one black cat don't cross me, another black cat will
It's bad luck if I'm jolly, bad luck if I cry
It's bad luck if I'm jolly, bad luck if I cry
It's bad luck if I stay here, it's still more bad luck if I die
Last night a hootin' owl came and sat right over my door
Last night a hootin' owl came and sat right over my door
A feelin' seems to tell me, I'll never see my man no more
I feel my left eye jumpin', my heart a-bumpin'
I'm on my P's and Q's
I feel my brain a-thumpin', I got no time to lose
