The Châteaux (Castles) of the Loire Valley are part of the architectural heritage of the historic towns along the Loire River in France. They illustrate the ideals of the Renaissance and the Age of the Enlightenment on French thought and design in the Loire Valley.
By the middle of the 16th century, King Francois I had shifted the center of power in France from the Loire back to the ancient capital of Paris. With him went the great architects, but the Loire Valley continued to be the place where most of the French royalty preferred to spend the bulk of their time. The ascension to the throne of King Louis XIV in the middle of the 17th century made Paris the permanent site for great royal châteaux when he built the Palace of Versailles. Nonetheless, those who gained the king's favour and the wealthy bourgeoisie continued to renovate existing châteaux or build lavish new ones as their summer residence in the Loire.
The French Revolution saw a number of the great French châteaux destroyed and many ransacked, their treasures stolen. The overnight impoverishment of many of the deposed nobility, usually after one of its members lost their head to the guillotine, saw many châteaux demolished. During World War I and World War II, some chateaux were commandeered as military headquarters. Some of these continued to be used this way after the end of WWII.
Today, these privately owned châteaux serve as homes, a few open their doors to tourist visits, while others are operated as hotels or bed and breakfasts. Many have been taken over by a local government authority or the giant structures like those at Chambord are owned and operated by the national government and are major tourist sites, attracting hundreds of thousands of visitors each year.

His natural charm and eccentric style of presenting endeared him to millions of viewers worldwide.
He became well known for cooking on location with a glass of wine and a silver tongue. He was regarded as a pioneer of taking cooking shows out of the studio. The chef went on to present his shows from around the world, including the Mediterranean, India, Australia and the USA.

Its area comprises approximately 800 square kilometres (310 sq mi). It is referred to as the Cradle of the French Language, and the Garden of France due to the abundance of vineyards, fruit orchards (such as cherries), and artichoke and asparagus fields, which line the banks of the river. Notable for its historic towns, architecture and wines, the valley has been inhabited since the Middle Palaeolithic period. In 2000, UNESCO added the central part of the Loire River valley to its list of World Heritage Sites.
The valley includes historic towns such as Amboise, Angers, Blois, Chinon, Nantes, Orléans, Saumur, and Tours.
The climate is favorable most of the year, the river often acting as a line of demarcation in France's weather between the northern climate and the southern. The river has a significant effect on the mesoclimate of the region, adding a few degrees of temperature. The climate can be cool with springtime frost while wine harvest months may have rain. Summers are hot; however influences from the Atlantic moderate the temperature with breezes.

Keith Floyd (28 December 1943 – 14 September 2009) was a British celebrity chef, television personality and restaurateur, who hosted cooking shows for the BBC and published many books combining cookery and travel. On television, his eccentric style of presentation endeared him to millions of viewers worldwide.
Floyd was born at Folly Farm near Reading, Berkshire on 28 December 1943 to working-class parents Sydney and Winnifred Floyd. He was brought up in a council house in the village of Wiveliscombe in Somerset. His family made financial sacrifices to enable him to be educated privately at Wellington School, Somerset.
Floyd became a cub reporter on the Bristol Evening Post and after watching the film Zulu decided to join the British Army, attaining the rank of Second Lieutenant in the Royal Tank Regiment, where he pestered the mess cook to produce gourmet dinners.
After three years, finding that he and the Army were "mutually incompatible", Floyd found employment in several catering-related jobs including barman, dishwasher and vegetable peeler.

Backroads Premium Inns Loire Valley bike trip in summer 2013. My wife and I enjoyed our first Backroads bike trip this summer with key stops at Domaine des Hauts de Loire, Cheverny, Chambord, Chenonceaux, Domaine de la Tortiniere, Azay-le-Rideau, Villanery, Usse, and Chateau Marcay. Great mix of biking (~200 km), unique chateaus, amazing food (think goat cheese), fine wine, and a new friends. Big shout out to Jerome, Frantz and Gerald who took great care of us. -

The Châteaux (Castles) of the Loire Valley are part of the architectural heritage of the historic towns along the Loire River in France. They illustrate the ideals of the Renaissance and the Age of the Enlightenment on French thought and design in the Loire Valley.
By the middle of the 16th century, King Francois I had shifted the center of power in France from the Loire back to the ancient capital of Paris. With him went the great architects, but the Loire Valley continued to be the place where most of the French royalty preferred to spend the bulk of their time. The ascension to the throne of King Louis XIV in the middle of the 17th century made Paris the permanent site for great royal châteaux when he built the Palace of Versailles. Nonetheless, those who gained the king's favour and the wealthy bourgeoisie continued to renovate existing châteaux or build lavish new ones as their summer residence in the Loire.
The French Revolution saw a number of the great French châteaux destroyed and many ransacked, their treasures stolen. The overnight impoverishment of many of the deposed nobility, usually after one of its members lost their head to the guillotine, saw many châteaux demolished. During World War I and World War II, some chateaux were commandeered as military headquarters. Some of these continued to be used this way after the end of WWII.
Today, these privately owned châteaux serve as homes, a few open their doors to tourist visits, while others are operated as hotels or bed and breakfasts. Many have been taken over by a local government authority or the giant structures like those at Chambord are owned and operated by the national government and are major tourist sites, attracting hundreds of thousands of visitors each year.

Great mix of biking (~200 km), unique chateaus, amazing food (think goat cheese), fine wine, and a new friends. Big shout out to Jerome, Frantz and Gerald who took great care of us.

De plek van ons Loire Chateau is zo centraal gelegen dat men binnen een half uur rijden de bekende kastelen Chateau Tours, Chateau Amboise, Chateau Chenonceau, Chateau Montpoupon, Chateau Loches, Chateau Cande, Chateau Azay le Rideau, Chateau langeais en Chateau Villandry kan bereiken.
Vanaf onze start in 2005 ontving onze bed en breakfast het certifikaat uitmuntend van Tripadvisor op welke site wij de hoogste ranking verkregen met meer dan 200 verschillende waarderingen van tevreden gasten. Velen die een luxueuze Chateau accommodatie in de Loire streek zoeken hebben ons via deze weg reeds gevonden.

On April 23, 2012 I had an out-of-town excursion planned: a train trip to the historic city of Tours, which is located right in the heart of the scenic Loire Valley. I got to Tours at 9:45 am, walked into the Tourism Office and booked a Loire Valley tour in the afternoon. For 28 Euros I was going to visit three different castles in the famous valley. It overlooks the confluence of the Vienne and Loire rivers from a steep hill on the left bank of the Loire, and marks the boundary between the modern departments of Indre-et-Loire to the east, and Maine-et-Loire to the West.

The lands where an ancient fortress once stood were known as Colombier until the 17th century. Acquired in the early 16th century by Jean Le Breton, France's Controller-General for War under King Francis I, a new château was constructed around the original 14th-century keep where King Philip II of France once met Richard I of England to discuss peace. It is also known for its beautiful gardens.
3. Au Cabernet d'Anjou
This former Loire mariners' bar enjoys a sun-flooded terrace overlooking one of the prettiest stretches of the river.

The French city of Blois in the Loire Valley has one of the largest and most interesting of the châteaux of the Loire Valley, built up in a variety of architectural styles over its 700 year period. It was home to many of the kings and queens of France. And there is also a very friendly pedestrian center to the town.
Because so many powerful kings lived here and were associated with the château, it was built up over the centuries in a variety of architectural styles. This one building exhibits the medieval and the Renaissance and then the French classic style later of François Mansart.
The historic center is 800 meters wide, very easy to walk around in. The ancient Old Town is built upon a steep slope, crowned by the historical castle at one end of the ridge, and by the cathedral at the other. As a result there are numerous staircase streets running up the hills.
The old part of town next to the château is a healthy and vibrant neighborhood with shops and cafés scattered and residences in the blocks behind.
The main street of the Old Town is rue Saint-Lubin which leads right into the major square, Place Louis XII.

On April 23, 2012 I had an out-of-town excursion planned: a train trip to the historic city of Tours, which is located right in the heart of the scenic Loire Valley. I got to Tours at 9:45 am, walked into the Tourism Office and booked a Loire Valley tour in the afternoon. For 28 Euros I was going to visit three different castles in the famous valley.
By 1:30 pm our minibus left and a small group of tourists got whisked by a friendly driver from the Saint-Eloi tour company to the first famous castle: the Château de Chenanceau, a gorgeous castle that spans the Cher River, a tributary of the Loire. The current castle was built in the French Renaissance style in the 1500s. Famous aristocrats are connected to this chateau: Francis I, King of France, who seized the castle from the previous owner for unpaid debts; Diane de Poitiers, the powerful mistress of the castle; and Catherine de Medici, the wife of King Henry II. With its mix of late Gothic and early Renaissance architecture and its stunning interior, Chenanceau is the most visited castle in France, after Versailles.
The second stop on my April 23, 2012 tour of the Loire Valley was the Château d'Amboise, located in a strategic position on an outcropping above the Loire River. Charles VII of France took the castle over in 1431 and from that point forward, this castle become a favourite among the French kings. In the late 1400s, Italian architects were brought in to modernize the castle. Leonardo da Vinci came to the Château d'Amboise in 1515 and worked in a nearby mansion, Clos Lucé, which was connected with the castle via an underground tunnel. The Chapel of Saint-Hubert, next to the chateau, is the last resting place of Leonardo da Vinci. After visiting the impressive castle with its gorgeous views, I descended into the village of Amboise which is very quaint with its medieval layout and narrow streets. Amboise contains many half-timbered houses that hold many of the local stores.
