This Great Britain Empire Documentary focuses on: William the Conqueror: As part of his efforts to secure England, William ordered many castles, keeps, and mottes built – among them the central keep of theTower of London, the White Tower. These fortifications allowed Normans to retreat into safety when threatened with rebellion and allowed garrisons to be protected while they occupied the countryside. The early castles were simple earth and timber constructions, later replaced with stone structures Henry VIII documentary: Henry is traditionally cited as one of the founders of the Royal Navy. Technologically, Henry invested in large cannon for his warships, to replace the smaller serpentines in use. Henry was also responsible for the creation of a permanent navy, with the supporting anchorages and dockyards. The Navy was enlarged up to fifty ships (the Mary Rose was one of them). Railway and Brunel: Isambard Kingdom Brunel, was an English mechanical and civil engineer who is considered "one of the most ingenious and prolific figures in engineering history", "one of the 19th century engineering giants", and "one of the greatest figures of the Industrial Revolution, [who] changed the face of the English landscape with his groundbreaking designs and ingenious constructions". Brunel built dockyards, the Great Western Railway, a series of steamships including the first propeller-driven transatlantic steamship and numerous important bridges and tunnels. Big Ben documentary: Big Ben is the nickname for the Great Bell of the clock at the north end of the Palace of Westminster in London. The tower was completed in 1858. The tower has become a prominent symbol of the United Kingdom. The clock and dials were designed by Augustus Pugin.
