Colin Renfrew speaks on the Unsolved Mysteries of the Silk Road at the Silk Road Symposium held at the Penn Museum held in March 2011.
The extent of contact between east (China) and west (Europe and Western Asia) in the prehistoric period has been much debated but remains little understood. In 1921 John Gunnar Anderson's excavations at Yangshao in Henan province led him to interpret the painted neolithic pottery found there as derived from that of neolithic Greece, a suggestion discounted by most subsequent scholars. Yet the genetics of the millet found in the neolithic of China and of eastern Europe leads archaeobotanists today to suggest a single source. The origins of copper and bronze metallurgy are likewise debated, and the mechanisms of transmission from the west of the horse-drawn chariots seen in burials of the late Shang dynasty are still open to question. Xinjiang province, with its remarkable preservation and its many insights from the second and first millennia BC offers tantalising clues, not least the Tarim "mummies" with their wonderfully preserved clothing and their western appearance. The presence there in the eighth century AD of the Tocharian language, the easternmost in the Indo-European language family, has led to intriguing speculations. These will be critically addressed. It will be argued that we are the dawn of a new era in the archaeology of prehistoric Eurasia, with the Silk Road offering challenges to many long-held ideas.
Colin Renfrew is the former Disney professor of Archaeology and Director of the McDonald Institute for Archaeological Research at the University of Cambridge, Cambridge, UK. He is now Senior Fellow of the McDonald Institute.

Embark on an amazing journey on the greatest trading route known to man in this exhibition that recreates the ancient cities of Asia and the Middle East. Collectively known as the "Silk Road", the Silk Routes were crucial paths for cultural, commercial and technological exchange between traders, merchants, soldiers and nomads from Ancient China, India, Tibet, Persia and Mediterranean countries a millennium ago. This highly interactive exhibition, making its Asian debut, will immerse visitors in the sights, sounds and smells of the bustling marketplaces in Asia and the Middle East.
Shipwrecked: Tang Treasures and Monsoon Winds (Extended till 2 October 2011)
Explore an astonishing cargo of some 60,000 objects carried by a ninth-century Arab dhow, ranging from exquisite ceramics to rare items of finely worked gold. Lying undisturbed on the ocean floor for more than 1,100 years until its discovery near Indonesia's Belitung Island in 1998, it is one of the oldest and most important marine archaeological finds of the late 20th century. The find confirms for the first time the existence of a direct maritime trade route from China to the Persian Gulf and beyond.

The Silk Road or Silk Route refers to a historical network of interlinking trade routes across the Afro-Eurasian landmass that connected East, South, and Western Asia with the Mediterranean and European world, as well as parts of North and East Africa. The land routes were supplemented by sea routes, which extended from the Red Sea to coastal India, China and Southeast Asia.
Extending 4,000 miles (6,500 km), the Silk Road gets its name from the lucrative Chinese silk trade along it, which began during the Han Dynasty (206 BCE – 220 CE). The central Asian sections of the trade routes were expanded around 114 BCE by the Han dynasty, largely through the missions and explorations of Zhang Qian, but earlier trade routes across the continents already existed.[citation needed] In the late Middle Ages, transcontinental trade over the land routes of the Silk Road declined as sea trade increased,. In recent years, both the maritime and overland Silk Routes are again being used, often closely following the ancient routes.

Before Silk: Unsolved Mysteries of the Silk Road by Colin Renfrew
Colin Renfrew speaks on the Unsolved Mysteries of the Silk Road at the Silk Road Symposium held at the Penn Museum held in March 2011. The extent of contact between east (China) and west (Europe and Western Asia) in the prehistoric period has been much debated but remains little understood. In 1921 John Gunnar Anderson's excavations at Yangshao in Henan province led him to interpret the painted neolithic pottery found there as derived from that of neolithic Greece, a suggestion discounted by most subsequent scholars. Yet the genetics of the millet found in the neolithic of China and of eastern Europe leads archaeobotanists today to suggest a single source. The origins of copper and bronze metallurgy are likewise debated, and the mechanisms of transmission from the west of the horse-draw... -

Colin Renfrew speaks on the Unsolved Mysteries of the Silk Road at the Silk Road Symposium held at the Penn Museum held in March 2011.
The extent of contact between east (China) and west (Europe and Western Asia) in the prehistoric period has been much debated but remains little understood. In 1921 John Gunnar Anderson's excavations at Yangshao in Henan province led him to interpret the painted neolithic pottery found there as derived from that of neolithic Greece, a suggestion discounted by most subsequent scholars. Yet the genetics of the millet found in the neolithic of China and of eastern Europe leads archaeobotanists today to suggest a single source. The origins of copper and bronze metallurgy are likewise debated, and the mechanisms of transmission from the west of the horse-drawn chariots seen in burials of the late Shang dynasty are still open to question. Xinjiang province, with its remarkable preservation and its many insights from the second and first millennia BC offers tantalising clues, not least the Tarim "mummies" with their wonderfully preserved clothing and their western appearance. The presence there in the eighth century AD of the Tocharian language, the easternmost in the Indo-European language family, has led to intriguing speculations. These will be critically addressed. It will be argued that we are the dawn of a new era in the archaeology of prehistoric Eurasia, with the Silk Road offering challenges to many long-held ideas.
Colin Renfrew is the former Disney professor of Archaeology and Director of the McDonald Institute for Archaeological Research at the University of Cambridge, Cambridge, UK. He is now Senior Fellow of the McDonald Institute.

Collectively known as the "Silk Road", the Silk Routes were crucial paths for cultural, commercial and technological exchange between traders, merchants, soldiers and nomads from Ancient China, India, Tibet, Persia and Mediterranean countries a millennium ago. This highly interactive exhibition, making its Asian debut, will immerse visitors in the sights, sounds and smells of the bustling marketplaces in Asia and the Middle East.
Shipwrecked: Tang Treasures and Monsoon Winds (Extended till 2 October 2011)
Explore an astonishing cargo of some 60,000 objects carried by a ninth-century Arab dhow, ranging from exquisite ceramics to rare items of finely worked gold. Lying undisturbed on the ocean floor for more than 1,100 years until its discovery near Indonesia's Belitung Island in 1998, it is one of the oldest and most important marine archaeological finds of the late 20th century. The find confirms for the first time the existence of a direct maritime trade route from China to the Persian Gulf and beyond.

Mr. Thubron describes his journey of some 7000 miles-by local bus, truck, car, donkey cart, camel, and foot-out of the heart of China into the mountains of Central Asia, across northern Afghanistan and the plains of Iran into Kurdish Turkey, which led to his bestselling book, Shadow of the Silk Road.

Full day city tour in Bishkek. Visit main square Ala Too and see guardians of honor, Manas and Kurmandjan Datka monuments, Oak park and fine art gallery under clear sky.
Also visit State Historical Museum
Day 2
Bishkek city – Son Kul Lake.
Morning transfer to Son Kul Lake. En route visit Burana Tower Historical complex. Lunch in Kazakh family in Tokmok town.
Transfer to Son Kul. Arrival and accommodation in yurts. Inspection the camp and territory around.
Dinner and overnight in yurt camp.
Day 3
Son Kul Lake – Tash Rabat caravanserai.
Morning at leisure on Son Kul Lake. Walking around the area and still time for 2 hours horse riding before we continue.
Lunch in camp and transfer to Tash Rabat caravanserai. Transfer via Moldo Ashuu pass and arrive to Naryn town, then proceed closer to the border with China.
Stop in Kara Koum canyon, near Tash Rabat caravanserai. Accommodation in yurt camp. Dinner and overnight.
Day 4
Tash Rabat caravanserai – Karakol town.
Long driving day. Transfer first to Kochkor village. Stop for a lunch. See famous souvenir shop museum and demonstration of producing felt.
Continue drive to Karakol town. Reach south shore of the Issyk Kul Lake and transfer along. Arrival to Karakol town. Accommodation in a hotel. Dinner and overnight.
Day 5
Karakol town – Karkara valley.
Early morning transfer to Karkara valley. Stop in Karkara tent camp and get helicopter excursion to South Inylchek glacier to the Khan Tengri base camp. That was our plan, because some rain and many clouds we had to skip the helicopter flight for that day and waiting for better weather.
Lunch and plenty of time to walk around Karkara valley, only 12m apart from the border to Kazakhstan. We even had a swim in the border river after our sauna.
Dinner and overnight in tents.
Day 6
Karkara valley – Khan Tengri base camp – Bishkek city.
The day started with wonderful sunshine and clear sky. So we were ready for our helicopter ride to South Inylchek glacier and Khan Tengri base camp.
Unexpected our helicopter broke down at the base camp and we were not able to leave. Lunch at South Inylchek glacier, Khan Tengri base camp.
After approx 5 hrs. waiting (doing some sightseeing and walk around at the base camp) a second helicopter arrived with all necessary tools for repairment. Meanwhile we took the second helicopter back to Karkara valley and even got a spezial VIP flight back to Bishkek.
Wonderful scenic flight across the north shore of the Issyk Kul Lake.
Evening arrival on Military airport transfer to downtown and accommodation in a hotel. Dinner and rest. – Well deserved!
Day 7
Bishkek city – airport. Flight to Osh city.
Full day in Bishkek city, sightseeing and shopping at the market.
Evening flight to Osh city. Arrival, transfer to hotel. Rest. Lunch and dinner in cafes..
Day 8
Osh city.
Full day city tour in Osh. Visit Osh Bazaar and it’s handicraft rows.
After visiting bazaar visit Sulaiman Mount. On the mount first you visit historical museum. Follow the way of all pilgrims up to the top of the hill where you watch a little mosque of Babur.
Dinner in a local café. Overnight in a hotel.
Day 9
Osh city – Achick Tash base camp.
In the morning we start visiting the cattle and horse market. Than we continue our route to Pamir mountain ridge.
Lunch en route.
Arrival to Achick Tash base camp. Accommodation in tents. Dinner and overnight in BC.
Day 10
Achick Tash BC – Osh city.
Transfer back to Osh city. Lunch en route.
Arrival to Osh.
Overnight in a hotel. Rest.
Day 11
Osh city – airport.
Early morning transfer to the airport. Flight back home via Istanbul.
Arrival back in Frankfurt early afternoon.
