There are different styles, like martial arts. And phone numbers are trophies, like hunting. It’s definitely a sport. Ryan Jaunzemis speaks in smiles when he describes his craft. It’s 9 o’clock on a Saturday night, and Jaunzemis is kicking back at a Starbucks patio on the strip, bobbing his head to headphone music as he studies a sheet of paper (a cheat sheet for this interview, he will later reveal). He’s wearing slacks and a pinstriped shirt, dress shoes and a blazer. His hair is slick and combed slightly forward. A neck tattoo that says El Segundo—his hometown—peeks out from under his collar. Online, Jaunzemis’ persona is sleazy, promising men the women of their dreams by way of “hypnosis and embedded psychological commands.” In person, however, his eyes are disarming, his smile somehow childlike. He seems kind and trustworthy. Someone you’d be friends with. The disparity is hard to reconcile. Jaunzemis is candid about his background, unless he’s speaking to a “target.” With targets, it’s all about mystery and intrigue, unless he opts for a “direct opener,” where he tells a girl exactly what he’s interested in. (“Like a poker player,” he says, “I’ve shown you all my cards up front.”) This happens rarely, though. Most of the time, he dodges personal questions posed by women. Jaunzemis came to Vegas six or so years ago after ending a marriage in London. His mother agreed to fly him back to the states but refused to take him in. so with a choice between four cities where he could stay with friends, Jaunzemis opted for Las Vegas because a construction gig awaited. The job fell through, but he found another way to pass the time—pick-up artistry. He learned through books and local “seduction” groups and now he’s a part-time dating coach who teaches private live-in sessions and group seminars through his Meetup.com page, The Player’s Club. Jaunzemis says there isn’t a magic pick-up line that will make girls jump into bed, but he still has his favorite routines. One of his go-to “openers” is a question directed at a “three-set” of women: “If you had your own island, what’s the first thing you’d do?” Once they answer, he slights his target, to throw her off, and compliments the “cock block,” to lower her guard. “She’s usually the fatter girl,” Jaunzemis explains. On the strip, he approaches a group of three women, one much older than the others. There’s not a target in this group, but they’ll do for demo purposes. He says he’s working on a project for school and poses the island question. The younger girls say they would sleep and swim. The older one says, “drink.” “All right!,” Jaunzemis says, giving her a high-five. “You’re the bad girl, huh? I can tell you’re the leader of the pack.” The positive reinforcement, taken from basic obedience training, works like a charm. Jaunzemis has an “in,” but isn’t interested. He moves on. On another occasion, Jaunzemis engages a woman who looks like a supermodel, pretending to be riffing on a conversation he was just having. “Would you be angry if your boyfriend kept pictures of his ex?” he asks. The model contemplates this and says it would depend on the circumstances. “What if they were under his bed?” The hypothetical scenario engages her so thoroughly she continues to explain herself after he has turned away. Asked if he ever feels dishonest about his openers—claiming to be in school, telling a girl that he’s running to a meeting but just couldn’t pass up the opportunity to tell her she’s beautiful—Jaunzemis pauses, having never considered his white lies. “Nah,” he concludes. “You gotta do what you gotta do.” And there’s a lot to do in the world of a pick-up artist. The air of nonchalance, of social ease and smooth comebacks is practiced intensively. It’s impressive but illusory. They work hard to look like they’re not working. That’s not the only irony. PUA’s insist that “game” isn’t just about picking up women. They say it’s also about building confidence, excelling in the workplace and general self-improvement."
