Here is an excerpt from this book, giving most numerous
families in
Waterford. I do this in all of my county books,
from various sources.
The
19th century birth index of
Ireland finds the following
families most numerous in the county (Possible variant
spellings after each name have been added) :
Power.....Powers.....Powre
Walsh.....
Welsh.....Welch
O'Brien.....
O'Bryan.....O'
Brian
Murphy.....Murphey.....
Morphy
Ryan.....Ryane.....Riane
McGrath.....McGragh.....McGraw
Foley.....Foly.....Fooley
Flynn.....Flyne.....Flinn
Morrissey.....
Morrissy.....Morrisy
Kelly.....Kelley.....Kellie
Phelan.....Phalen.....Phalan
Sullivan.....O'Sullivan.....Soolivan
Whelan.....Whalen.....Whalan
McCarthy.....MacCarthey.....McCarty
Butler.....Buttler.....Butteler
Tobin.....Tobyn.....Tobbine
Most of the old
Irish names can have the
Mac or 'O' before
the name dropped or added at will. Additionally many old
Irish names were translated or 'mistranslated' into
English
from the original gaelic.
Two more basic resources for the 19th century are the Tithe
Applotment
Books, and Griffiths
Survey of Ireland.

History of the Name
One of the 60 most numerous names of Ireland, Power is
spelled as Poher, le Poer, and Powre etc.. It is said to have
been taken from the
French "povre" meaning poverty stricken.
The family arrived in
England in 1066 with
William the Conqueror,
arriving in Ireland with the
Normans in the
12th century.
In 1177
King Henry II granted the county of Waterford to
Robert
Le Poer, the
Kings marshal. The Le Poers from the
13th to the
16th century held the titles of barons of Donisle and of Carraghmore,
Viscounts of Decies, and
Earls of Tyrone. Numerous in their
original lands in Waterford and
Kilkenny, the name became
spelled as Power, and they held most of the baronies of Decies
and Upperthird. Their lands were called "Powers
Country"....
