Top 40 Tracks is a defunct airplay chart from Billboard Magazine. It was created in 5 December 1998, when Billboard Magazine changed the airplay profile of The Hot 100 Airplay to include more R&B, Country, and Rock stations to its profile (thus reducing the profile of its Pop stations). To preserve the notion of the former chart, Top 40 Tracks was introduced. The Top 40 Tracks consisted of Mainstream Top 40 audience impressions, as well as Rhythmic Top 40 and Adult Top 40 audience impressions which had previously broken off from the Mainstream Top 40 chart.
Unlike The Top 40 Mainstream, The Top 40 Tracks (like the Hot 100 Airplay) was based on total statistical impressions, not total detections.[clarification needed] The Top 40 Tracks chart was replaced in March 2005 with the Pop 100 Airplay chart.
The Top Forty or Top 40 is a music industry shorthand for the currently most-popular songs in a particular genre. When used without qualification, it typically refers to the best-selling or most frequently broadcast popular music songs of the previous week. Top 40 became the dominant radio format of the 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s.
The term "Top 40" for a radio format appeared in 1951.
The Top 40, or top forty, whether surveyed by a radio station or a publication, was a list of songs that shared only the common characteristic of being newly released. Its popularity coincided with the rapid changes in recording technology in the 1950s and 1960s. In 1954, the recording industry agreed upon a standard recording format for higher fidelity music, so any new record player could play any new record. Also in that year, new single records were released on 45 rpm records, and the Top 40 thereafter became a survey of the popularity of these records (and their airplay on the radio). Tape recording had become perfected, allowing artists more freedom as they composed songs, especially novelty songs.
Taylor Alison Swift (born December 13, 1989) is an American singer-songwriter and occasional actress. Raised in Wyomissing, Pennsylvania, Swift moved to Nashville, Tennessee at the age of fourteen to pursue a career in country music. She signed to the independent label Big Machine Records and became the youngest songwriter ever hired by the Sony/ATV Music publishing house. The release of Swift's self-titled debut album in 2006 established her as a country music star. "Our Song", her third single, made her the youngest sole writer and singer of a number one song on the country chart. She received a Best New Artist nomination at the 50th Grammy Awards.
Swift's second album, Fearless, was released in late 2008. Buoyed by the chart success of the singles "Love Story" and "You Belong with Me", Fearless attracted a crossover audience and became the top-selling album of 2009. The record won four Grammy Awards, with Swift becoming the youngest ever Album of the Year winner. Fearless also received Album of the Year plaudits at the American Music Awards, Academy of Country Music Awards and Country Music Association Awards, making it the most awarded album in country music history. In 2010, Swift released her third album, Speak Now, which sold over one million copies in its first week. She then embarked on the 111-date Speak Now World Tour, which was attended by over 1.6 million fans and has become one of the highest-grossing concert tours of all time. The album's third single, "Mean", won two Grammy Awards for Best Country Song and Best Country Solo Performance. Swift is currently recording her fourth studio album, due for release in the fall of 2012.
Céline Marie Claudette Dion, CC OQ, (French pronunciation: [selin djɔ̃] ( listen); born March 30, 1968), is a Canadian singer. Born to a large family from Charlemagne, Quebec, Dion emerged as a teen star in the French-speaking world after her manager and future husband René Angélil mortgaged his home to finance her first record. In 1990, she released the English-language album Unison, establishing herself as a viable pop artist in North America and other English-speaking areas of the world.
Dion had first gained international recognition in the 1980s by winning both the 1982 Yamaha World Popular Song Festival and the 1988 Eurovision Song Contest. Following a series of French albums in the early 1980s, she signed on to CBS Records Canada in 1986. During the 1990s, with the help of Angélil, she achieved worldwide fame after signing with Epic Records and releasing several English albums along with additional French albums, becoming one of the most successful artists in pop music history. However, in 1999 at the height of her success, Dion announced a hiatus from entertainment in order to start a family and spend time with her husband, who had been diagnosed with cancer. She returned to the top of pop music in 2002 and signed a three-year (later extended to almost five years) contract to perform nightly in a five-star theatrical show at the Colosseum at Caesars Palace, Paradise, Nevada.
Robert Nesta "Bob" Marley, OM (6 February 1945 – 11 May 1981) was a Jamaican singer-songwriter and musician. He was the rhythm guitarist and lead singer for the ska, rocksteady and reggae band Bob Marley & The Wailers (1963–1981). Marley remains the most widely known and revered performer of reggae music, and is credited with helping spread both Jamaican music and the Rastafari movement to a worldwide audience.
Marley's music was heavily influenced by the social issues of his homeland, and he is considered to have given voice to the specific political and cultural nexus of Jamaica. His best-known hits include "I Shot the Sheriff", "No Woman, No Cry", "Could You Be Loved", "Stir It Up", "Get Up Stand Up", "Jamming", "Redemption Song", "One Love" and, "Three Little Birds", as well as the posthumous releases "Buffalo Soldier" and "Iron Lion Zion". The compilation album Legend (1984), released three years after his death, is reggae's best-selling album, going ten times Platinum which is also known as one Diamond in the U.S., and selling 25 million copies worldwide.

When I make my Top 40
Smash hit
Rock â'n' roll record
Everything is gonna be just fine
When I make my Top 40
Smash hit
Rock â'n' roll disc
I'll be the record company's valentine
No more philosophic melancholia
Eight hundred pounds of electric genitalia
When I make my Top 40
Smash hit
Rock â'n' roll record
Everything's gonna be just fine
When I make my fuzz tone
Wah-wah
Synthesized record
Everything is gonna be just grand
When I make my fuzz tone
Wah-wah
Synthesized disc
I'll have to get myself a moving van
Costume, hairdo, made up cute
A personal connection in a business suit
When I make my fuzz tone
Wah-wah
Synthesized record
Everything is gonna be just grand
When I make my dynamite
Heavy soul
Freaked out record
Everything is gonna be just swell
When I make my dynamite
Heavy soul
Freaked out disc
I'll be living it up pell mell
Mountain top hide away
Three-car garage
Out there hustlin' that sonic massage
When I make my Top 40
Big beat
Heavy soul
Freaked out
Solid gold
Synthesized
Rock â'n' roll record
Everything is gonna be just fine
Idle Fame with a plastic smile
Controversial relations keep you on top for a while
At the top of the charts, the bottom of the barrel
Success depends upon the company you keep
Compositions sugar-coated with messages puddle deep
Emotions bought and sold and the going rate is cheap
Gimme gimme gimme a lesson in pop star 101
'Cause I can smile and I can dance
Pull my strings and give me some cash
I don't wanna, I don't wanna
lead a normal life a work like all the others
Top 40 look out, 'cause I'm gonna be #1
Business tycoons writing songs in crayon
Consumer reports show what needs good distribution
Appeal to the masses the best as you can
Radio Djs spreading your disease
Infectious transmission from sea to shining sea
Music without soul, an empty shell
Radio dial can be heard for miles
but the only thing coming through is a narrow point of view
Just thing one day this could be you
Top 40 got no soul but it will when I take control

but there's only one thing that makes you drop
you've finally made it you're over the top
