Urban contemporary is a music radio format. The term was coined by New York DJ Frankie Crocker in the mid-1970s. Urban contemporary radio stations feature a playlist made up entirely of hip hop, R&B, grime, electronic music such as dubstep, UK garage and drum and bass (often with hip hop vocalists or rappers), and Caribbean music such as reggae, dancehall, reggaeton, zoui, bouyon, and soca (In Toronto, London, New York City, Boston and Miami). Urban contemporary was developed through the characteristics of genres such as R&B and soul. Virtually all urban contemporary formatted radio stations are located in cities that have sizeable African-American populations, such as New York City, Atlanta, Chicago, Washington, D.C., Philadelphia, Detroit, Cleveland, Cincinnati, Dallas, Houston, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Baltimore, Memphis, Boston, New Orleans, Louisville, Indianapolis, Columbus, Oklahoma City, and Charlotte.
The term "urban contemporary" is heavily associated with African-American music, particularly for R&B in African-American contexts. For Latin Americans, the music is more Latin urban, such as reggaeton, Latin hip hop and bachatón. Their playlists are dominated by singles by top-selling hip hop and R&B performers. On occasion, an urban contemporary station will play classic soul songs from the 1970s and early 1980s to satisfy the earlier end of the genre.
According to Kalikaprasad, the urban populace maintains an exclusive and vague idea about mainstream and they judge and decide artistic success accordingly. He argues with clear instances that beyond the so-called mainstream media and big corporate, there is a huge market that has its own dynamic and they do not necessarily follow the logic of the theoretical market economy. And most importantly, it’s a gross misconception to define market as a homogenized entity! Video created by Kaahon Team. Visit us @ www.kaahon.com Like us @ https://www.facebook.com/kaahon.Media... Part of Utah Archives Month 2015 at the Utah State Archives. See all events at http://utaharchivesmonth.org and http://www.facebook.com/utaharchivesmonth. 1:35 Historian Brian Cannon will present on his new work (co-authored with Charles S. Peterson) that focuses on the history of Utah between 1896 and 1945. In The Awkward State of Utah: Coming of Age in the Nation, Cannon and Peterson incorporate fresh archival sources, new oral histories, and hundreds of scholarly articles and books as they narrate the little-known story of the crucial formative years when Utah came of age. During its sometimes awkward years of adolescence and maturation, Utah was gradually incorporated into the American political, social, and economic mainstream. Urban and industrial influences supplanted agrarian trad...
Did the Nazi’s create a wormhole with the super powerful Nazi bell and plummet somewhere in time? Where is the device now? So many questions rise from such an intriguing experiment making it the most mysterious objects known to man, and if it does still exist, in which hands is it? Mainstream belief tends to oppose the existence of such a weapon and classify it as an urban legend. To the contrary of mainstream belief, many people believe in such a weapon, and not just that, they also believe that it had sinister intentions. There are many documents and on TV and the internet that state the Third Reich was doing hard core research before the end of the war in 1945. And, aside from the chemical weapons and tough machinery, it was believed that the Third Reich scientists were working on a su...
by Elie Bursztein At every Black Hat you will inevitably hear hackers boasting that they can break into any company by dropping a malicious USB drive in the company's parking lot. This anecdote has even entered mainstream culture and was prominently featured in the Mr. Robot TV series. However despite its popularity, there has been no rigorous study of whether the attack works or is merely an urban legend. To answer this burning question and assess the actual threat posed by malicious USB drives, we dropped nearly 300 USB sticks on the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign campus and measured who plugged in the drives. And oh boy how effective that was! Of the drives we dropped, 98% were picked up and for 48% of the drives, someone not only plugged in the drive but also clicked on files...

ANDRES DUANY PBS As cities across America struggle to modify their planning codes in the wake of the Great Recession, a small faction of urban planners, called the Congress for New Urbanism, has steadily emerged into the mainstream. At the head of this movement is Andres Duany, New Urbanism’s iconoclastic founder and headmaster. Duany travels the world teaching and preaching his New Urbanist principles. He believes that his method of designing cities will radically change lives. This film follows Duany and his team over the course of eight days as they design the largest town ever proposed in the Cayman Islands.
Cairo has experienced countless transformations which shaped its social and spatial structure over the course of its history. Modern architecture is located side-by-side with centuries-old buildings, and within the city's relatively small but agglomerated area. Because of Cairo's ever growing population density -which varies from 30,000 persons per square kilometer to 100,000 in the older districts- and its limited green spaces, urban farming is restricted to rooftops and scarce peri-urban agricultural lands. Urban and rooftop agriculture are beneficial in cooling the temperature of the buildings and absorbing some of the pollution of the city. In addition to that, creating green spaces in a megalopolis like Cairo might contribute to a more attractive cityscape as well as to an increased ...

Sorry this took so long. What can I say that already hasn't been said? One of the most influential albums of the 90s. This album changed the contemporary urban music scene with Aaliyah's signature, airy vocals over hard Hip-Hop beats. This introduced Timbo & Missy to the mainstream and created a thirst for their futuristic sound. There are mis-steps and filler moments. However, Aaliyah never ceases to be a calming crooner throughout. Sequence wise: I decided to kind of treat this like a cassette or vinyl album from the 80s / 90's that has "themes" to each side (e.g. Side A: Fire Jams / Side B: Chill Vibes) Omitted "Never Givin' Up". I don't hate it, but it kills the flow of the album and makes it an even lengthier / long-winded affair a la a Janet Jackson recor...
