Dr. David Neiman (1921-2004) was an internationally renowned scholar, speaker, and writer who inspired many people. His life's work concerned the intricate relations between Christianity, Islam, and Judaism throughout history and in modern times. Dr. Neiman made history come alive through his dramatic presentations and unique interpretations. In light of our current world situation, Dr. Neiman's work is not only extremely relevant but also remarkably prescient. More than anything, Dr. Neiman was a keen observer of the human condition. His words convey our shared history with clarity, humor, and humanity.

Amarna (commonly known as el-Amarna or incorrectly as Tel el-Amarna; see below) (Arabic: العمارنة al-‘amārnah) is an extensive Egyptian archaeological site that represents the remains of the capital city newly–established and built by the Pharaoh Akhenaten of the late Eighteenth Dynasty (c. 1353 BC), and abandoned shortly afterwards. The name for the city employed by the ancient Egyptians is written as Akhetaten (or Akhetaton – transliterations vary) in English transliteration. Akhetaten means "Horizon of the Aten."
The area is located on the east bank of the Nile River in the modern Egyptian province of Minya, some 58 km (36 mi) south of the city of al-Minya, 312 km (194 mi) south of the Egyptian capital Cairo and 402 km (250 mi) north of Luxor. The site of Amarna includes several modern villages, chief of which are el-Till in the north and el-Hagg Qandil in the south.
The area was also occupied during later Roman and early Christian times; excavations to the south of the city have found several structures from this period.

«Ne marchandez pas la mémoire de Djilali»
«Ses amis l'ont marginalisé au moment où Djilali s'effondrait à petit feu dans la misère.»
«Je ne peux décrire la souffrance qu'a vécue Djilali ces derniers jours tandis qu'aucun de ses amis n'est venu lui rendre visite à l'hôpital», a déploré Fayçal Rezkallah, fils du défunt, qui a appelé à mettre fin à la commercialisation de sa mémoire. «Ne marchandez pas la mémoire de mon père», a-t-il tancé.
La capitale de la Mekerra est endeuillée tandis que son ciel a été, hier encore, couvert par un grand brouillard. Telle une traînée de poudre, le décès de Djilali Raïna-Raï, de son vrai nom Djilali Rezkallah, a fait le tour de l'Oranie. Le ténor du verbe bédouin modernisé s'est éteint à l'âge de 48 ans laissant derrière lui quatre enfants, l'aîné est âgé d'à peine 20 ans et autant de questions sans réponses.
Pourquoi Djilali est mort dans le dénuement et l'indigence totale. Les avis sont multiples et variés. Sa famille et ses amis, les plus proches, à leur tête, Abbès Sedjrari, ont été unanimes à dire que «la vie de l'artiste a toujours été triste».
Ses enfants, à leur tête Fayçal, déclarent tout de go que «ses amis l'ont marginalisé après que Djilali ait donné les plus beaux jours de sa vie à l'art, Raïna-Raï et la ville du Petit-Paris». Hier matin, les habitants du quartier de Sorrecor, au centre-ville de Sidi Bel Abbès, effectuaient, les derniers préparatifs avant de passer au cimetière. Et les questions qui revenaient, comme un leitmotiv, dans toutes les bouches, étaient axées sur le sort dans lequel s'est retrouvé la troupe Raïna-Raï et les raisons qui ont poussé le défunt à claquer la porte de cette dernière.
Le guitariste Lotfi Attar n'entend pas de la même oreille ce qui se colportait à travers toute la ville. «Nous avons assisté Djilali en organisant à son bénéfice des galas de solidarité», a-t-il affirmé, ajoutant que «je l'ai aidé, en l'imposant, aux dépens de Kada et du reste des membres, dans la troupe Raïna-Raï». «Malheureusement, il a quitté de son propre gré le groupe en 1999 et depuis, Djilali s'est mis à chanter dans la wilaya de Aïn Témouchent, chose qui sort des principes, du style et du verbe prônés par la troupe Raïna-Raï.»
Selon Lotfi Attar: «Le défunt a amené sa propre touche dans la troupe en chantant le verbe bédouin à la voix rurale tandis que sa gestuelle et ses danses sur la scène ont bousculé la musique raï des chanteurs figés, hormis les hochements de leurs épaules.»
Le défunt a rejoint la troupe Raïna-Raï en 1985. Djilali, qui a été rebelle, s'imposé en fredonnant avec brio, Ya rayi ya et Lala Fatima. «Il a été rebelle au système et non pas à la troupe grâce à laquelle Djilali a existé», a affirmé Lotfi Attar. Et ce dernier d'annoncer le dernier ouvrage de Djilali.
«Je garde un enregistrement inédit appartenant au défunt», a-t-il affirmé. Selon M.Hanitet Mokhtar, secrétaire général des artistes de la wilaya de Sidi Bel Abbès, «l'engagement de Djilali dans la musique, remonte aux années 1977-1978 dans le groupe Choc composé des musiciens Bachi Bouzid, Gerouache Zouaoui et Meghraoui Aziz tandis que la chanson appelée Zina appartient à Kadri Diziri, fils de Armanda Fernandez et Moulay Hassen Diziri. La chanson a été reprise en 1982 par Kada, les Aigles noirs et puis par Raïna Raï en 1983. La troupe Amarna qui est venu après Raïna Raï, a été chanceuse en enregistrant sa première oeuvre intitulée Khalouni Nabki ala Rayi qui veut dire «laissez moi pleurer sur mon sort».
Ces oeuvres ont propulsé Djilali sur la scène nationale et internationale.
«Le décès de Djillali Rezkallah est une grande perte tandis que les gens commencent à commercialiser sa mémoire», a déclaré Mme Hlima Hankour, directrice de la culture de la wilaya de Sidi Bel Abbès.

Jerusalem Travel Guide: Located in the Judean Mountains between the Mediterranean Sea and the Dead Sea, Jerusalem is considered holy to the three major Abrahamic religions: Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. It is the holiest city in Judaism and the spiritual center of the Jewish people since the 10th century BCE, the third-holiest in Islam and is also home to a number of significant and ancient Christian landmarks. It is also a city with a very violent past, as it was fiercely contested between Christianity and Islam during the brutal Crusade era. While the city has had a large Jewish majority since 1967, a wide range of national, religious, and socioeconomic groups are represented here. The walled area of Jerusalem, which until the late nineteenth century formed the entire city, is now called the Old City and became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1982. It consists of four ethnic and religious sections — the Armenian, Christian, Jewish, and Muslim Quarters. Barely one square kilometer, the Old City is home to several of Jerusalem's most important and contested religious sites including the Western Wall and Temple Mount for Jews, the Dome of the Rock and al-Aqsa Mosque for Muslims, and the Church of the Holy Sepulchre for Christians.
Surrounding the Old City are more modern areas of Jerusalem. The civic and cultural center of modern Israel extends from western Jerusalem toward the country's other urban areas to the west, while areas populated mostly by Arabs can be found in the northern, eastern and southern districts.
Archaeological findings prove the existence of development within present-day Jerusalem as far back as the 4th millennium BCE, but the earliest written records of the city come in the Execration Texts (c. 19th century BCE) and the Amarna letters (c. 14th century BCE). According to Biblical accounts, the Jebusites, a Canaanite tribe, inhabited the area around the present-day city (under the name Jebus) until the late 11th century BCE. At that point (c. 1000s BCE), the Israelites, led by King David, invaded and conquered the city, expanding it southwards and establishing it as the capital of the United Kingdom of Israel and Judah (the United Monarchy). It was renamed at this time as Yerushalayim (Jerusalem), a name by which it is still referred to today.
King David's reign over Jerusalem ended around 970 BCE when his son Solomon became the new king. Biblical sources state that within a decade Solomon started to build the first of two Holy Temples within city limits — Solomon's Temple (or the First Temple), a significant site in Jewish and Christian history as the last known location of the Ark of the Covenant. The period of the First Temple was marked by the division of the United Monarchy at the time of Solomon's death (c. 930 BCE) when the ten northern tribes, originally part of the Monarchy, split off to form the Kingdom of Israel. Under the leadership of the bloodline of David and Solomon, Jerusalem continued to act as the capital of the southern par of the split, the Kingdom of Judah. Later, with the Assyrian conquest of the Kingdom of Israel in 722 BCE, Jerusalem became the center of a Judah strengthened by the great number of Israeli refugees. In approximately 586 BCE, the Babylonians conquered the Kingdom of Judah including the city of Jerusalem, and the First Temple Period came to an end.
In 538 BCE, after fifty years of Babylonian captivity, the Jews were given permission from Persian King Cyrus the Great to return to Judah so they could rebuild Jerusalem and construct the Second Temple. The construction was completed in the year 516 BCE, seventy years after the destruction of the First Temple. Jerusalem regained its status as capital of Judah and center of Jewish worship for another four centuries, with a considerable portion of that period under Hasmonean rule. By 19 BCE, the Temple Mount was elevated and construction began on an expansion of the Second Temple under Herod the Great, a Jewish client king under Roman rule. In 6 CE, the city, as well as much of the surrounding area, came under direct Roman rule as the Judea Province. Still unchallenged, the Roman rule over Jerusalem and the region came to an end with the first Jewish-Roman war, the Great Jewish Revolt, which resulted in the destruction of the Second Temple in 70 CE. Jerusalem once again served as the national capital for the people of the region during the three-year rebellion known as Bar Kokhba's revolt. The Romans succeeded in sacking and recapturing the city in 135 CE and as a punitive measure, the Jews were banned from Jerusalem.

Petra is a historical and archaeological city in the southern Jordanian governorate of Ma'an that is famous for its rock-cut architecture and water conduit system. Another name for Petra is the Rose City due to the color of the stone out of which it is carved.
Established possibly as early as 312 BCE as the capital city of the Nabataeans, it is a symbol of Jordan, as well as Jordan's most-visited tourist attraction. It lies on the slope of Jebel al-Madhbah (identified by some as the biblical Mount Hor in a basin among the mountains which form the eastern flank of Arabah (Wadi Araba), the large valley running from the Dead Sea to the Gulf of Aqaba. Petra has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1985.
The site remained unknown to the Western world until 1812, when it was introduced by Swiss explorer Johann Ludwig Burckhardt. It was described as "a rose-red city half as old as time" in a Newdigate Prize-winning poem by John William Burgon. UNESCO has described it as "one of the most precious cultural properties of man's cultural heritage". Petra was named amongst the New7Wonders of the World in 2007 and was also chosen by the Smithsonian Magazine as one of the "28 Places to See Before You Die".
Some of the earliest recorded farmers settled in Beidha, a pre-pottery settlement just north of Petra, by 7000 BCE. Petra is listed in Egyptian campaign accounts and the Amarna letters as Pel, Sela or Seir. Stations 19 through 26 of the stations list of Exodus are places associated with Petra.
Josephus (Antiquities of the Jews iv. 7, 1 ~ 4, 7), Eusebius and Jerome (Onom. sacr. 286, 71. 145, 9; 228, 55. 287, 94) assert that Rekem was the native name, and this name appears in the Dead Sea Scrolls [15] as a prominent Edomite site most closely describing Petra, and associated with Mount Seir. In the Aramaic versions, Rekem is the name of Kadesh, implying that Josephus may have confused the two places. The Semitic name of the city, if not Sela, remains unknown. The passage in Diodorus Siculus which describes the expeditions which Antigonus sent against the Nabataeans in 312 BCE is understood to throw some light upon the history of Petra, but the "petra" referred to as a natural fortress and place of refuge can not be a proper name and the description implies that the town was not yet in existence.

She is depicted in several of the tombs in Amarna and appears in other inscriptions and sculptures.
Ankhesenpaaten married with her half brother Tutankhaten in 1334BC. The young married couple lived in Amarna, the name of the city dedicated to the God Aten founded by Akhenaten. Three years later in 1331BC Tutankhaten changed his name to Tutankhamun and Queen Ankhesenpaaten changed her name to Ankhesenamun, probably due to pressure from traditionalists, reflecting the growing acceptance of the old god Amun and decline in support of the god Aten. A year later,Tutankhamun and Ankhesenamen with the royal court, moved from Amarna back to the old capital at Thebes,
The couple had two daughters who were born dead,(The two fetuses were found in the tomb of Tut).then they had not descendants. when Tutakhamun Died, Ay (aye) married with the widow ankhesenamen probably to assert his power on the throne.

In the Amarna letters, written in Akkadian, the letter "H" is used to signify the guttural Hebrew letters alef-heh-chet-ayin, and therefore it was possible to write the name of the city as if it were "Haca" or "Aca". Had the name not been preserved, we would not have been able to identify it with certainty with the name that appears in hieroglyphics. In Assyrian the name has been preserved with the spelling "AKK".

Hatshepsut ( also Hatchepsut; meaning Foremost of Noble Ladies) was the fifth pharaoh of the Eighteenth dynasty of Ancient Egypt. She is generally regarded by Egyptologists as one of the most successful pharaohs, reigning longer than any other woman of an indigenous Egyptian dynasty. According to Egyptologist James Henry Breasted she is also known as "the first great woman in history of whom we are informed."
Hatshepsut was the daughter of Thutmose I and his primary wife Ahmes. Her husband Thutmose II was the son of Thutmose I and a secondary wife named Mutneferet, who carried the title King's daughter and was probably a child of Ahmose I. Hatshepsut and Thutmose II had a daughter named Neferure. Thutmose II fathered Thutmose III with Iset, a secondary wife.
Comparison with other female rulers
Although it was uncommon for Egypt to be ruled by a woman, the situation was not unprecedented. As a regent, Hatshepsut was preceded by Merneith of the first dynasty, who was buried with the full honors of a pharaoh and may have ruled in her own right. Nimaethap of the third dynasty may have been the dowager of Khasekhemwy, but certainly acted as regent for her son, Djoser, and may have reigned as pharaoh in her own right. Nitocris may have been the last pharaoh of the sixth dynasty. Her name is found in the Histories of Herodotus and writings of Manetho, but her historicity is uncertain. Queen Sobekneferu of the twelfth dynasty is known to have assumed formal power as ruler of "Upper and Lower Egypt" three centuries earlier than Hatshepsut. Ahhotep I, lauded as a warrior queen, may have been a regent between the reigns of two of her sons, Kamose and Ahmose I, at the end of the seventeenth dynasty and the beginning of Hatshepsut's own eighteenth dynasty. Amenhotep I, also preceding Hatshepsut in the eighteenth dynasty, probably came to power while a young child and his mother, Ahmose-Nefertari, is thought to have been a regent for him. Other women whose possible reigns as pharaohs are under study include Akhenaten's possible female co-regent/successor (usually identified as either Nefertiti or Meritaten) and Twosre. Among the later, non-indigenous Egyptian dynasties, the most notable example of another woman who became pharaoh was Cleopatra VII, the last pharaoh of Ancient Egypt.

All this I use as tools to describe, explain and deepen the interest in the sites that we visit. From my experience, I have learned that in this way, the Holy Land becomes more than just history, and that the large stones that we see scattered about in dissaray, join together one by one until they become - a Byzantine Church. This also happens when I lead a group of Pilgrims in the Steps of Jesus. We climb to the peak of Mount Precipice, "glide" over the land to the Sea of Galilee, land on the water and "see" the miracle which enfolds before us. This is a many faceted experience. Not only history which you will remember and cherish, but an experience which I hope will be inplanted in your hearts and minds, and will accompany you all the days of your life.

Il periodo che intercorre fra la morte di Akhenaten (1351-1334 a.C.) e l'accessione al trono di Horemheb (1306-1292 a.C.) è uno dei più oscuri della storia egiziana, caratterizzato da una successione di coreggenze e regni effimeri, un sovrano donna, un principe ittita assassinato, l'apparente collasso dell'impero egiziano nel Levante e una pestilenza. Le fonti egiziane disturbate dalla damnatio memoriae che ha colpito i re dell'epoca amarniana sono integrate con successo da alcuni documenti non egiziani di eccezionale valore storico: Le gesta di Shuppiluliuma, redatte in hittita dal re Murshili II in memoria del padre, e le lettere di Amarna, la corrispondenza diplomatica in accadico della corte faraonica con i grandi re del Vicino oriente e i piccoli principati della Fascia levantina.
