Technology is rapidly approaching the physical limits on transistor size making the speed and cost of computing improvements via reducing transistor size impossible. Three state logic, rather than two state logic, is proposed as a way to reduce speed, power consumption, and cost of computing due to less data lines required and simplicity of computing algorithms. In this project, ternary logic is explored in the form of an 8-bit calculator ALU capable of addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division of two numbers.

The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy is about everything. Life, the Universe, everything. If you've read these amazing books, you know the answer is 42, but what's the question? To find out what the question was, they built a giant computer we call Earth. And though it seems silly, perhaps Douglas Adams was correct, and that not just earth, but the WHOLE UNIVERSE is an incredibility complex computational system, processing the answer to some unknown question. The universe IS made up of information, similar to a computer, and physics (you know, the basis of the universe) certainly is based on computational principles. But is it running some grand program? Will the answer be 42? Make sure you have your towel, and watch the episode!

Ternary is the base-3 numeral system. Analogous to a bit, a ternary digit is a trit. One trit contains bits of information. Although ternary most often refers to a system in which the three digits 0, 1, and 2 are all non-negative numbers, the adjective also lends its name to the balanced ternary system, used in comparison logic and ternary computers.

The Thinking Machine is a ternary computer that outputs melodies formed by three sounds as a result of the calculations. Whether binary of ternary, it is certainly a computer in Alan Turing's sense, although in this case the algorithmic mechanism is fixed so it is not a unversal Turing machine. However, like all computers - the Thinking Machine is a logical machine with input and output that can process and store code, and is an actual object that expresses discrete time within real time.

A ternary computer (also called trinary computer) is a computer that uses ternary logic (three possible values) instead of the more common binary logic (two possible values) in its calculations.
One of the earliest calculating machines, built by Thomas Fowler entirely from wood in 1840, was a ternary computer. The only modern, electronic ternary computer Setun was built in the late 1950s in the Soviet Union at the Moscow State University by Nikolay Brusentsov, and it had notable advantages over the binary computers which eventually replaced it (such as lower electricity consumption and lower production cost)[citation needed]. In 1970 Brusentsov built an enhanced version of the computer, which he called Setun-70.
Ternary computing is commonly implemented in terms of balanced ternary, which uses the three digits -1, 0, and +1. The negative value of any balanced ternary digit can be obtained by replacing every + with a – and vice versa. It is easy to subtract a number by inverting the + and – digits and then using normal addition. Balanced ternary can express negative values as easily as positive ones, without the need for a leading negative sign as with decimal numbers. These advantages make some calculations more efficient in ternary than binary.

The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy is about everything. Life, the Universe, everything. If you've read these amazing books, you know the answer is 42, but what's the question? To find out what the question was, they built a giant computer we call Earth. And though it seems silly, perhaps Douglas Adams was correct, and that not just earth, but the WHOLE UNIVERSE is an incredibility complex computational system, processing the answer to some unknown question. The universe IS made up of information, similar to a computer, and physics (you know, the basis of the universe) certainly is based on computational principles. But is it running some grand program? Will the answer be 42? Make sure you have your towel, and watch the episode!

The Thinking Machine is a ternary computer that outputs melodies formed by three sounds as a result of the calculations. Whether binary of ternary, it is certainly a computer in Alan Turing's sense, although in this case the algorithmic mechanism is fixed so it is not a unversal Turing machine. However, like all computers - the Thinking Machine is a logical machine with input and output that can process and store code, and is an actual object that expresses discrete time within real time.
