In this very thorough video not only does Anne-Marie show how to make lotion but she explains the purpose of each ingredient (and even uses charts!). After watching this video you will have all the tools you need to make luxurious, moisturizing, and perfect lotion every time. A note on semantics: Anne-Marie uses the term sterilize which is technically incorrect. She should be using the term disinfect when talking about cleaning tools for lotion making.

Today we're making a super luxurious, homemade lotion, free of chemicals and preservatives, and it's SO easy, you'll never buy lotion again.
Mariah here from http://mariahdolan.com, your busy mom headquarters to help you love the skin you're in and I'm so excited to be making lotion today because we are OUT!
So why even bother making lotion when you can buy it, right?
Our skin is our largest organ, and anything you put on it gets absorbed directly into the bloodstream.
The problem is most commercial skin care products are filled with
fragrances
dyes
detergents
carcinogens
preservatives such as formaldehyde and parabens
Our already overburdened liver then needs to filter all of that garbage in order for us to stay well.
So think of it this way...
Don't put anything on your skin, that you wouldn't eat.
Let's get to it.
I'll put a link below where I get all of the ingredients.
Start off combining all of the ingredients into a medium glass bowl. If you have a double boiler you can use that too, but I don't, so I just make due with what I have.
We're going to add ⅓ cup coconut oil, ⅓ cup cocoa butter, ⅓ cup shea butter, ⅓ cup sweet almond oil. Stir to combine over medium heat until the oils have melted.
Now the oils have melted, and we're going to add 1 tsp. of Vitamin E oil and 15 or so drops of your favorite essential oil.
I use lavender oil because we use this on our baby's butt as a diaper rash cream.
Lavender oil is safe for babies from birth on, as well as chamomile. Calendula oil is also good, but only from 6 months on.
Let's put that in, give it a stir, then pop this into the refrigerator for about an hour or two. You want the mixture to firm up but not get hard.
Here we are with the cooled and slightly firmed up mixture, and all we need to do now is whip it up with a mixer.
And there you have it! Just scoop it in a glass jar and it should last for up to 6-12 months since all of the ingredients are shelf stable to begin with.

A lotion is a low- to medium-viscosity, topical preparation intended for application to unbroken skin. By contrast, creams and gels have higher viscosity.
Lotions are applied to external skin with bare hands, a clean cloth, cotton wool or gauze. Many lotions, especially hand creams and face cream are formulated not as a medicine delivery system, but simply to smooth, re-hydrate, and soften the skin. These are particularly popular with the aging and aged demographic groups, and in the case of face usage, can also be classified as a cosmetic in many cases, and may contain fragrances.
Most lotions are oil-in-water emulsions using a substance such as cetearyl alcohol to keep the emulsion together, but water-in-oil lotions are also formulated. The key components of a skin care lotion, cream or gel emulsion (that is mixtures of oil and water) are the aqueous and oily phases, an emulgent to prevent separation of these two phases, and, if used, the drug substance or substances. A wide variety of other ingredients such as fragrances, glycerol, petroleum jelly, dyes, preservatives, proteins and stabilizing agents are commonly added to lotions. Today we're making a super luxurious, homemade lotion, free of chemicals and preservatives, and it's SO easy, you'll never buy lotion again.
Mariah here from http://mariahdolan.com, your busy mom headquarters to help you love the skin you're in and I'm so excited to be making lotion today because we are OUT!
So why even bother making lotion when you can buy it, right?
Our skin is our largest organ, and anything you put on it gets absorbed directly into the bloodstream.
The problem is most commercial skin care products are filled with
fragrances
dyes
detergents
carcinogens
preservatives such as formaldehyde and parabens
Our already overburdened liver then needs to filter all of that garbage in order for us to stay well.
So think of it this way...
Don't put anything on your skin, that you wouldn't eat.
Let's get to it.
I'll put a link below where I get all of the ingredients.
Start off combining all of the ingredients into a medium glass bowl. If you have a double boiler you can use that too, but I don't, so I just make due with what I have.
We're going to add ⅓ cup coconut oil, ⅓ cup cocoa butter, ⅓ cup shea butter, ⅓ cup sweet almond oil. Stir to combine over medium heat until the oils have melted.
Now the oils have melted, and we're going to add 1 tsp. of Vitamin E oil and 15 or so drops of your favorite essential oil.
I use lavender oil because we use this on our baby's butt as a diaper rash cream.
Lavender oil is safe for babies from birth on, as well as chamomile. Calendula oil is also good, but only from 6 months on.
Let's put that in, give it a stir, then pop this into the refrigerator for about an hour or two. You want the mixture to firm up but not get hard.
Here we are with the cooled and slightly firmed up mixture, and all we need to do now is whip it up with a mixer.
And there you have it! Just scoop it in a glass jar and it should last for up to 6-12 months since all of the ingredients are shelf stable to begin with.
