Bertha Belmore (1882–1953) was a British stage and film actress.
She was only eight when she made her first appearance on stage. She later toured the coast of America with Sir Philip Ben Greet's Shakespearean Players.
"Weddings are wonderful", a romantic farce directed in 1938 by Maclean Rogers, starred Esmond Knight as a young man (Guy) pursuing romance with two girls, played by June Clyde and Rene Ray. This film has never been shown on UK tv, or been released on dvd, but it was available on VHS from a now defunct firm in the US about 20 years ago. The current copyright status is unclear, the production company who made the film ceased trading in 1940 and it may qualify as an 'orphan' work under UK copyright law. If a copyright holder objects, or a dvd release is announced, I will immediately remove the film. Strong support from a cast of British favorites includes George Carney, and Bertha Belmore as the propective mother in law. Guy had better watch out for the formidable Bertha!
Please Teacher was a stage show in London's West End in the 1930s. A film version was made in 1937 with most of the original stars, including Bobby Howes, Vera Pearce, and Bertha Belmore. In this remarkable routine Vera Pearce takes a group of girls into the gym. The company that produced this film, Associated British, also made film versions of other West End productions of the time, including Ivor Novello's Glamorous Night. By viewing these films we have a unique record of what it must have been like to be a theatregoer in London in the years just before WWII. Hopefully these may one day get a dvd release..............

A lovely song from the light musical comedy Yes, Madam?, produced at the London Hippdrome in 1934. Its stars Binnie Hale and Bobbie Howes had made a great success together in 1929 in the show Mr Cinders. This outing saw Miss Hale in her now familiar housemaid's uniform, engaging in romantic comedy capers with Howes, and such british stalwart musical comedy character performers as Wylie Watson, Bertha Belmore and the redoubtable Vera Pearce. The recording was made for Columbia records in London on 3rd October 1934, with the London Hippodrome Orchestra conducted by the show's composer, Joseph Tunbridge.

From the 1937 fim "Glamorous Night". A rare treat, this, for Ivor Novello fans - Mary Ellis reprises her 1935 stage success "Glamorous Night" in this 1937 film., singing the title song and a version of "Fold YOur Wings" from the same show. Miss Ellis was born in New York in 1897. She created the role of Suor Genovieffa in Puccini's "Suor Angelica" at the Metropolitan Opera in 1918, and later made her name starring as Rose-Marie La Flamme in the original Broadway production of Rudolf Friml's Rose-Marie in 1924 in which she introduced "The Indian Love Call". She settled in London in 1930 where, as well as starring in Jerome Kern's "Music In The Air" (1933), she also was the heroine of three Ivor Novello operettas, "Glamorous Night" (1935), "The Dancing Years" (1939), and "Arc de Triomphe" (1...

He was born in London in 1874, and introduced the "masher" type roles in the early Edwardian musical comedies, produced by George Edwardes at the famous Gaiety Theatre in London.
