"WAKE UP O MY EYES FROM HEEDLESSNESS"
This poem have been written by Sultan Murad III who reigned the Ottoman Empire between 1574-1595. One day, Sultan Murad III could not wake up for the dawn prayer (fajr) and he felt so sorry and wrote his famous peom, to state his deep feelings which impressive by itself indeed:
WAKE UP O MY EYES FROM HEEDLESSNESS
Wake up, o my eyes, wake up from heedlessness
Wake up, o my very sleepy eyes, wake up
Azrael's intent is the soul, believe me
Wake up, o my eyes, wake up from heedlessness

All birds wake up before dawn
They start reciting God's names in their own tongues

Where ever we travel, we always like to visit at least one or two cemeteries in a country out of curiosity, to see how people are honored & remembered after they die. They're also very peaceful places in general, & good places to reflect on both life & death. In Turkey, during the Ottoman period, the bodies of the ruling sultan & his family members were interned & placed in "turbe's" (pronounced tur-bee). The turbe's were small, free standing structures generally built in the cemetery behind a mosque. They usually were hexagonal or octagonal in shape and were relatively plain on the outside. On the inside however, they were elaborately decorated with beautiful ceilings & tiles. The bodies of the family members were placed in burial boxes and covered with expensive clothes. The males of the family, the sultan and sehzades (princes) were identified by a turban on their boxes. The wife & the female members have nothing. People come to visit these turbe's, and just like in a mosque, they must remove their shoes & women must cover their heads. People also pray while in the turbe's, but in Islam, there are no prayers for the dead. They are just praying in general to Allah (but kind of hoping he notices we're they're praying from so their prayers may carry more weight). I couldn't help but think when seeing the burial boxes that it kind of resembled a campground with all sorts of tents of different sizes. In Istanbul there are turbe's all over the city in mosque cemeteries. But in one particular suburb called Eyup, there is a cluster of about 30 or so of these turbe's all in one location. Eyup therefore is a major pilgrimage site for Muslims- said to be the largest pilgrimage site outside of Mecca. There is also a huge hillside cemetery there too,where many of the famous & wealthy are buried in order to be close to the sultan's. You actually take an aerial tramway (similar to what you see at a ski resort) to get from the base of Eyup, up the hillside, while passing over all of the graves below. It makes for a short, interesting trip. Once at the top of the cemetery, you're able to walk around & explore it. Most people instead though just choose to sit at one of the lovely cafe's located at the top, and view the cemetery from a distance, while also having a great view back up the Golden Horn waterway towards downtown Istanbul.

Murad III (Ottoman Turkish: مراد ثالث Murād-i sālis, Turkish:III.Murat) (4 July 1546 -- 15/16 January 1595) was the Sultan of the Ottoman Empire from 1574 until his death.
Born in Bozdağan or Manisa, Şehzade Murad son of Sultan Selim II and haseki sultan Nurbanu Sultan. His grandfather Suleiman died when he was 20 and his father became the new Sultan and ruled till 1574 when he was succeeded by Murad. Murad began his reign by having his five younger brothers strangled. His authority was undermined by the harem influences, more specifically, those of his mother and later of his favorite wife Safiye Sultan. The power had only been maintained under Selim II by the genius of the all-powerful Grand Vizier Mehmed Sokollu who remained in office until his assassination in October 1579. During his reign the northern borders with the Habsburg Monarchy were defended by the Bosniak kapetan Hasan Predojević. The reign of Murad III was marked by wars with Safavids and Habsburgs and Ottoman economic decline and institutional decay. The Ottomans also faced defeats during battles such as the Battle of Sisak.
Murad took great interest in the arts, particularly miniatures and books. He actively supported the court Society of Miniaturists, commissioning several volumes including the Siyer-i Nebi, the most heavily illustrated biographical work on the life of Muhammad, the Book of Skills, the Book of Festivities and the Book of Victories. He had two large alabaster urns transported from Pergamon and placed on two sides of the nave in the Hagia Sophia in Constantinople and a large wax candle dressed in tin which was donated by him to the Rila monastery in Bulgaria is on display in the monastery museum.
From him descend all succeeding Sultans, through his marriage to his maternal relative Valide Sultan Safiye Sultan, originally named Sofia Baffo, a Venetian noblewoman, mother of Mehmed III.
Numerous envoys and letters were exchanged between Elizabeth I and Sultan Murad III. In one correspondence, Murad entertained the notion that Islam and Protestantism had "much more in common than either did with Roman Catholicism, as both rejected the worship of idols", and argued for an alliance between England and the Ottoman Empire. To the dismay of Catholic Europe, England exported tin and lead (for cannon-casting) and ammunitions to the Ottoman Empire, and Elizabeth seriously discussed joint military operations with Murad III during the outbreak of war with Spain in 1585, as Francis Walsingham was lobbying for a direct Ottoman military involvement against the common Spanish enemy. This diplomacy would be continued under Murad's successor Mehmed III, by both the sultan and Safiye Sultan alike.
Murad died in the Topkapı Palace of Constantinople in 1595.
The Sedentary Sultan
Murad was the second Ottoman Sultan to never go on campaign during his reign (the first being his father, Selim II). After his enthronement, he never left Istanbul. During the final years of his reign, he did not even leave Topkapı Palace, and for two consecutive years he did not attend the Friday procession to the imperial mosque--an unprecedented omission. The Ottoman historian Mustafa Selaniki wrote that whenever Murad planned to go out to Friday prayer, he changed his mind after hearing of alleged plots by the Janissaries to dethrone him once he left the palace.
In fiction
Orhan Pamuk's historical novel Benim Adım Kırmızı (My Name is Red, 1998) takes place at the court of Murad III, during nine snowy winter days of 1591, which the writer uses in order to convey the tension between East and West.

Muhteşem Yüzyıl
Muhteşem Yüzyıl (Turkish pronunciation: [muhteˈʃɛm ˈjyzjɯl], English: The Magnificent Century) is a Turkish historical fiction television series. Written by Meral Okay and Yılmaz Şahin, it is based on the life of Ottoman Sultan Süleyman the Magnificent, the longest reigning Sultan of the Ottoman Empire, and his wife Hürrem Sultan, a slave girl who became Sultana. It was originally broadcast on Show TV and then transferred to Star TV.
Plot
Succeeding his father, Sultan Selim I, at the age of 26, Sultan Süleyman I became the tenth sultan of the Ottoman Empire. This series captures the essence of being a sultan, prince, and govenor, yet also introduces life as a sultana, concubine, or even political refugee. The series also focuses on Süleyman's legal wife and throne-sweetheart, Hürrem Sultan, and her constant, messy battle to keep concubines out of the Sultan's chambers.
As the harem heats up, so do the cannons against infidels. While women poison, and men stab, the beautiful entanglements between slaves and princes, sultans and sultanas, and even soldiers with city-girls, bring light to the darkest corners of the palace. Including Süleyman's best friend, İbrahim Paşa, having feelings for Süleyman's sister Hatice Sultan, but his confused emotions for another could land him on the chopping block, literally.

Biography

Murad II
Murad II Kodja or Amurathes II (June 1404, Amasya – 3 February 1451, Edirne) (Ottoman Turkish: مراد ثانى Murād-ı sānī, Turkish:II. Murat) was the Sultan of the Ottoman Empire from 1421 to 1451 (except for a period from 1444 to 1446 when his son Mehmed II reigned).
Murad II's reign was marked by the long war he fought against the Christian feudal lords of the Balkans and the Turkish emirates in Anatolia, a conflict that lasted 25 years. He was brought up in Amasya, and ascended the throne on the death of his father Mehmed I. His mother was Valide Sultan Emine Hatun (daughter of Suleyman Bey, ruler of Dulkadirids), his father's third consort. Their marriage served as an alliance between the Ottomans and this buffer state.
Biography
Murad II (Murat), when called from his vice-royalty in Asia Minor to become the sovereign of the Ottoman Empire, was only sixteen years of age. He was solemnly recognized as sultan, girded with the sabre of Osman at Bursa and the troops and officers of the state willing paid homage to him as their sovereign.

Where ever we travel, we always like to visit at least one or two cemeteries in a country out of curiosity, to see how people are honored & remembered after they die. They're also very peaceful places in general, & good places to reflect on both life & death. In Turkey, during the Ottoman period, the bodies of the ruling sultan & his family members were interned & placed in "turbe's" (pronounced tur-bee). The turbe's were small, free standing structures generally built in the cemetery behind a mosque. They usually were hexagonal or octagonal in shape and were relatively plain on the outside. On the inside however, they were elaborately decorated with beautiful ceilings & tiles. The bodies of the family members were placed in burial boxes and covered with expensive clothes. The males of the family, the sultan and sehzades (princes) were identified by a turban on their boxes. The wife & the female members have nothing. People come to visit these turbe's, and just like in a mosque, they must remove their shoes & women must cover their heads. People also pray while in the turbe's, but in Islam, there are no prayers for the dead. They are just praying in general to Allah (but kind of hoping he notices we're they're praying from so their prayers may carry more weight). I couldn't help but think when seeing the burial boxes that it kind of resembled a campground with all sorts of tents of different sizes. In Istanbul there are turbe's all over the city in mosque cemeteries. But in one particular suburb called Eyup, there is a cluster of about 30 or so of these turbe's all in one location. Eyup therefore is a major pilgrimage site for Muslims- said to be the largest pilgrimage site outside of Mecca. There is also a huge hillside cemetery there too,where many of the famous & wealthy are buried in order to be close to the sultan's. You actually take an aerial tramway (similar to what you see at a ski resort) to get from the base of Eyup, up the hillside, while passing over all of the graves below. It makes for a short, interesting trip. Once at the top of the cemetery, you're able to walk around & explore it. Most people instead though just choose to sit at one of the lovely cafe's located at the top, and view the cemetery from a distance, while also having a great view back up the Golden Horn waterway towards downtown Istanbul. . -

Murad III (Ottoman Turkish: مراد ثالث Murād-i sālis, Turkish:III.Murat) (4 July 1546 -- 15/16 January 1595) was the Sultan of the Ottoman Empire from 1574 until his death. Born in Bozdağan or Manisa, Şehzade Murad son of Sultan Selim II and haseki sultan Nurbanu Sultan. His grandfather Suleiman died when he was 20 and his father became the new Sultan and ruled till 1574 when he was succeeded by Murad. Murad began his reign by having his five younger brothers strangled. His authority was undermined by the harem influences, more specifically, those of his mother and later of his favorite wife Safiye Sultan. The power had only been maintained under Selim II by the genius of the all-powerful Grand Vizier Mehmed Sokollu who remained in office until his assassination in October 1579. During his reign the northern borders with the Habsburg Monarchy were defended by the Bosniak kapetan Hasan Predojević. The reign of Murad III was marked by wars with Safavids and Habsburgs and Ottoman economic decline and institutional decay. The Ottomans also faced defeats during battles such as the Battle of Sisak. Murad took great interest in the arts, particularly miniatures and books. He actively supported the court Society of Miniaturists, commissioning several volumes including the Siyer-i Nebi, the most heavily illustrated biographical work on the life of Muhammad, the Book of Skills, the Book of Festivities and the Book of Victories. He had two large alabaster urns transported from Pergamon and placed on two sides of the nave in the Hagia Sophia in Constantinople and a large wax candle dressed in tin which was donated by him to the Rila monastery in Bulgaria is on display in the monastery museum. From him descend all succeeding Sultans, through his marriage to his maternal relative Valide Sultan Safiye Sultan, originally named Sofia Baffo, a Venetian noblewoman, mother of Mehmed III. Numerous envoys and letters were exchanged between Elizabeth I and Sultan Murad III. In one correspondence, Murad entertained the notion that Islam and Protestantism had "much more in common than either did with Roman Catholicism, as both rejected the worship of idols", and argued for an alliance between England and the Ottoman Empire. To the dismay of Catholic Europe, England exported tin and lead (for cannon-casting) and ammunitions to the Ottoman Empire, and Elizabeth seriously discussed joint military operations with Murad III during the outbreak of war with Spain in 1585, as Francis Walsingham was lobbying for a direct Ottoman military involvement against the common Spanish enemy. This diplomacy would be continued under Murad's successor Mehmed III, by both the sultan and Safiye Sultan alike. Murad died in the Topkapı Palace of Constantinople in 1595. The Sedentary Sultan Murad was the second Ottoman Sultan to never go on campaign during his reign (the first being his father, Selim II). After his enthronement, he never left Istanbul. During the final years of his reign, he did not even leave Topkapı Palace, and for two consecutive years he did not attend the Friday procession to the imperial mosque--an unprecedented omission. The Ottoman historian Mustafa Selaniki wrote that whenever Murad planned to go out to Friday prayer, he changed his mind after hearing of alleged plots by the Janissaries to dethrone him once he left the palace. In fiction Orhan Pamuk's historical novel Benim Adım Kırmızı (My Name is Red, 1998) takes place at the court of Murad III, during nine snowy winter days of 1591, which the writer uses in order to convey the tension between East and West. -

"WAKE UP O MY EYES FROM HEEDLESSNESS"
This poem have been written by Sultan Murad III who reigned the Ottoman Empire between 1574-1595. One day, Sultan Murad III could not wake up for the dawn prayer (fajr) and he felt so sorry and wrote his famous peom, to state his deep feelings which impressive by itself indeed:

Wake up, o my eyes, wake up from heedlessness
Wake up, o my very sleepy eyes, wake up
Azrael's intent is the soul, believe me
Wake up, o my eyes, wake up from heedlessness
Wake up, o my very sleepy eyes, wake up
All birds wake up before dawn
They start reciting God's names in their own tongues
Mountains, rocks and trees declare His unity
Wake up, o my eyes, wake up from heedlessness

Where ever we travel, we always like to visit at least one or two cemeteries in a country out of curiosity, to see how people are honored & remembered after they die. They're also very peaceful places in general, & good places to reflect on both life & death. In Turkey, during the Ottoman period, the bodies of the ruling sultan & his family members were interned & placed in "turbe's" (pronounced tur-bee). The turbe's were small, free standing structures generally built in the cemetery behind a mosque. They usually were hexagonal or octagonal in shape and were relatively plain on the outside. On the inside however, they were elaborately decorated with beautiful ceilings & tiles. The bodies of the family members were placed in burial boxes and covered with expensive clothes. The males of the family, the sultan and sehzades (princes) were identified by a turban on their boxes. The wife & the female members have nothing. People come to visit these turbe's, and just like in a mosque, they must remove their shoes & women must cover their heads. People also pray while in the turbe's, but in Islam, there are no prayers for the dead. They are just praying in general to Allah (but kind of hoping he notices we're they're praying from so their prayers may carry more weight). I couldn't help but think when seeing the burial boxes that it kind of resembled a campground with all sorts of tents of different sizes. In Istanbul there are turbe's all over the city in mosque cemeteries. But in one particular suburb called Eyup, there is a cluster of about 30 or so of these turbe's all in one location. Eyup therefore is a major pilgrimage site for Muslims- said to be the largest pilgrimage site outside of Mecca. There is also a huge hillside cemetery there too,where many of the famous & wealthy are buried in order to be close to the sultan's. You actually take an aerial tramway (similar to what you see at a ski resort) to get from the base of Eyup, up the hillside, while passing over all of the graves below. It makes for a short, interesting trip. Once at the top of the cemetery, you're able to walk around & explore it. Most people instead though just choose to sit at one of the lovely cafe's located at the top, and view the cemetery from a distance, while also having a great view back up the Golden Horn waterway towards downtown Istanbul.

Murad III (Ottoman Turkish: مراد ثالث Murād-i sālis, Turkish:III.Murat) (4 July 1546 -- 15/16 January 1595) was the Sultan of the Ottoman Empire from 1574 until his death.
Born in Bozdağan or Manisa, Şehzade Murad son of Sultan Selim II and haseki sultan Nurbanu Sultan. His grandfather Suleiman died when he was 20 and his father became the new Sultan and ruled till 1574 when he was succeeded by Murad. Murad began his reign by having his five younger brothers strangled. His authority was undermined by the harem influences, more specifically, those of his mother and later of his favorite wife Safiye Sultan. The power had only been maintained under Selim II by the genius of the all-powerful Grand Vizier Mehmed Sokollu who remained in office until his assassination in October 1579. During his reign the northern borders with the Habsburg Monarchy were defended by the Bosniak kapetan Hasan Predojević. The reign of Murad III was marked by wars with Safavids and Habsburgs and Ottoman economic decline and institutional decay. The Ottomans also faced defeats during battles such as the Battle of Sisak.
Murad took great interest in the arts, particularly miniatures and books. He actively supported the court Society of Miniaturists, commissioning several volumes including the Siyer-i Nebi, the most heavily illustrated biographical work on the life of Muhammad, the Book of Skills, the Book of Festivities and the Book of Victories. He had two large alabaster urns transported from Pergamon and placed on two sides of the nave in the Hagia Sophia in Constantinople and a large wax candle dressed in tin which was donated by him to the Rila monastery in Bulgaria is on display in the monastery museum.
From him descend all succeeding Sultans, through his marriage to his maternal relative Valide Sultan Safiye Sultan, originally named Sofia Baffo, a Venetian noblewoman, mother of Mehmed III.
Numerous envoys and letters were exchanged between Elizabeth I and Sultan Murad III. In one correspondence, Murad entertained the notion that Islam and Protestantism had "much more in common than either did with Roman Catholicism, as both rejected the worship of idols", and argued for an alliance between England and the Ottoman Empire. To the dismay of Catholic Europe, England exported tin and lead (for cannon-casting) and ammunitions to the Ottoman Empire, and Elizabeth seriously discussed joint military operations with Murad III during the outbreak of war with Spain in 1585, as Francis Walsingham was lobbying for a direct Ottoman military involvement against the common Spanish enemy. This diplomacy would be continued under Murad's successor Mehmed III, by both the sultan and Safiye Sultan alike.
Murad died in the Topkapı Palace of Constantinople in 1595.
The Sedentary Sultan
Murad was the second Ottoman Sultan to never go on campaign during his reign (the first being his father, Selim II). After his enthronement, he never left Istanbul. During the final years of his reign, he did not even leave Topkapı Palace, and for two consecutive years he did not attend the Friday procession to the imperial mosque--an unprecedented omission. The Ottoman historian Mustafa Selaniki wrote that whenever Murad planned to go out to Friday prayer, he changed his mind after hearing of alleged plots by the Janissaries to dethrone him once he left the palace.
In fiction
Orhan Pamuk's historical novel Benim Adım Kırmızı (My Name is Red, 1998) takes place at the court of Murad III, during nine snowy winter days of 1591, which the writer uses in order to convey the tension between East and West.

In one correspondence, Murad entertained the notion that Islam and Protestantism had "much more in common than either did with Roman Catholicism, as both rejected the worship of idols", and argued for an alliance between England and the Ottoman Empire. To the dismay of Catholic Europe, England exported tin and lead (for cannon-casting) and ammunitions to the Ottoman Empire, and Elizabeth seriously discussed joint military operations with Murad III during the outbreak of war with Spain in 1585, as Francis Walsingham was lobbying for a direct Ottoman military involvement against the common Spanish enemy. This diplomacy would be continued under Murad's successor Mehmed III, by both the sultan and Safiye Sultan alike.
Murad died in the Topkapı Palace of Constantinople in 1595.
The Sedentary Sultan
Murad was the second Ottoman Sultan to never go on campaign during his reign (the first being his father, Selim II). After his enthronement, he never left Istanbul. During the final years of his reign, he did not even leave Topkapı Palace, and for two consecutive years he did not attend the Friday procession to the imperial mosque--an unprecedented omission. The Ottoman historian Mustafa Selaniki wrote that whenever Murad planned to go out to Friday prayer, he changed his mind after hearing of alleged plots by the Janissaries to dethrone him once he left the palace.
In fiction
Orhan Pamuk's historical novel Benim Adım Kırmızı (My Name is Red, 1998) takes place at the court of Murad III, during nine snowy winter days of 1591, which the writer uses in order to convey the tension between East and West.
