Maya cities were the centres of population of the pre-Columbian Maya civilization of Mesoamerica. They served the specialised roles of administration, commerce, manufacturing and religion that characterised ancient cities worldwide. Maya cities tended to be more dispersed than cities in other societies, even within Mesoamerica, as a result of adaptation to a lowland tropical environment that allowed food production amidst areas dedicated to other activities. They lacked the grid plans of the highland cities of central Mexico, such as Teotihuacán and Tenochtitlan.Maya kings ruled their kingdoms from palaces that were situated within the centre of their cities. Cities tended to be located in places that controlled trade routes or that could supply essential products. This allowed the elites that controlled trade to increase their wealth and status. Such cities were able to construct temples for public ceremonies, thus attracting further inhabitants to the city. Those cities that had favourable conditions for food production, combined with access to trade routes were likely to develop into the capital cities of early Maya states.
A Canadian schoolboy appears to have discovered a lost Mayan city hidden deep in the jungles of Mexico using a new method of matching stars to the location of temples on earth. William Gadoury, 15, was fascinated by the ancient Central American civilization and spent hours poring over diagrams of constellations and maps of known Mayan cities. And then he made a startling realisation: the two appeared to be linked. Help us spread the word about the liberty movement, we're reaching millions help us reach millions more. Deep within the forest in northern Guatemala lie the ruins of Rio Azul, a Maya city that reached one-third the size of Tikal. Discovered and partially explored in the early 1960s. Rio Azul and the surrounding region were more fully investigated between 1983 and 1987. Remains in the Rio Azul area date from 900 B.C. to A.D. 850. The data indicate that, unlike most Maya cities that have been studied, Rio Azul was a frontier town, an administrative center, with alternating defense and trade-outpost functions. About A.D. 385, the Rio Azul region was conquered and the city founded by Tikal, serving as a Teotihuacan-linked garrison for that capital. Nearly all of the more than seven hundred structures found within Rio Azul were erected between A.D. 390 and 530. Acres of pavement were laid d...

The Palenque City - much more than an Ancient Maya City, Temple of the Inscriptions Skull Mystery, ancient alien / demigod theory reviewed Somebody mentioned in the comments about the teeth encrusting and took it to mean patina. Actually it refers to a mayan tradition to file the teeth and encrust them with valuables. Not sure why this comment doesn’t show now, probably one of the numerous youtube bugs. Lately the uploads are becoming very difficult and bugs of youtube make it very difficult or impossible to change any video settings. no wonder if there are bugs in handling the comments too.

The ancient stone ruins were found during an expedition led by Slovenian archaeologist Ivan Sprajc. Located in the Mexican state of Campeche, the newly discovered cities were hidden so deeply in the dense jungle that it was barely possible to access them on foot. They were found near Chactun, another Mayan city that was found back in 2013 by Sprajc during a previous expedition. "Aerial photographs helped us in locating the sites," he said. Among the newfound ruins are several pyramid temples, the remains of an ancient palace and a huge stone facade with an entrance made to resemble the jaws of a large creature. They were found within an area of jungle covering 1800 square miles that is notoriously difficult to explore. "In the jungle you can be as little as 600 feet from a large site an...

In Civilization V, the player leads a civilization from prehistoric times into the future on a procedurally generated map, achieving one of a number of different victory conditions through research, exploration, diplomacy, expansion, economic development, government and military conquest. The game is based on an entirely new game engine with hexagonal tiles instead of the square tiles of earlier games in the series. Many elements from Civilization IV and its expansion packs have been removed or changed, such as religion and espionage (although these were reintroduced in its subsequent expansions). The combat system has been overhauled, removing stacking of military units and enabling cities to defend themselves by firing directly on nearby enemies. In addition, the maps contain computer-co...

Copan, considered by many one of the most spectacular cities of the ancient Maya civilization, is a ruins complex known for its beautiful stone temples, altars, hieroglyphs, and stelae. It was built between 400 and 800 A.D., until it suddenly was abandoned. Even though Copan was well known since the early 19th century, it wasn’t until 1975 that excavations began –still ongoing– to uncover the mysteries behind the history of this lost city. Recent studies of skeletons suggest that the city was abandoned after becoming unstable around 800 A.D. By that time, the city had grown exponentially to approximately 25,000 people and constant droughts had destroyed vital crops in the area. Eventually, all the resources available were consumed, forcing the residents to abandon the city. Today, the...

Palenque was a Maya city state in southern Mexico that flourished in the 7th century. The Palenque ruins date back to 226 BC to its fall around 1123 AD. After its decline, it was absorbed into the jungle, which is made up of cedar, mahogany, and sapodilla trees, but has been excavated and restored and is now a famous archaeological site attracting thousands of visitors. It is located near the Usumacinta River in the Mexican state of Chiapas, located about 130 km (81 mi) south of Ciudad del Carmen[citation needed] about 150 m (164 yd) above sea level. It stays at a humid 26°C (79°F) with roughly 2160 mm (85 in) of rain a year. Palenque is a medium-sized site, much smaller than such huge sites as Tikal or Copán, but it contains some of the finest architecture, sculpture, roof comb and bas-re...

Lost Civilization Of The Ancient Mayans Maya cities tended to expand haphazardly, and the city centre would be occupied by commercial and administrative complexes, surrounded by an irregular sprawl of residential districts. Different parts of a city would often be linked by causeways. The principal architecture of the city consisted of palaces, pyramid-temples, ceremonial ballcourts, and structures aligned for astronomical observation. Lecture given by Dr. Simon Martin, Associate Curator and Keeper of Collections, American Section. Every spring and autumn equinox thousands of people gather at the base of "El Castillo"—the pyramid at the heart of one of the ancient America's most famous and evocative cities: Chichen Itza. They come to marvel at the skill of ancient astronomers in aligning their structure in such a way that the sun casts a diamond-back shadow of a giant serpent down one of its staircases. They also come to peer into the depths of the great sinkhole known as the "Well of Sacrifice," and wander through the expanses of the "Great Ballcourt," the largest in the New World. Chichen Itza is a truly remarkable place, but the story behind it has hardly been told. There is a hidden history to these ruins and the big...
