TEXT OF GOSPEL and HOMILY:
The Lord be with you.
And with your spirit.
A reading from the holy gospel according to luke.
Glory to you o
Lord.
Jesus began speaking in the synagogue saying: "
Today this scripture passage is fulfilled in your hearing." and all spoke highly of him and were amazed at the gracious words that came from his mouth. They also asked, "Isn't this the son of joseph?" he said to them, "
Surely you will quote me this proverb, 'Physician, sure yourself' and say, 'Do here in your native place the things that we heard we done in
Capernaum.'" and he said, "
Amen I say to you, no prophet is accepted in his own native place. Indeed, I tell you, there were many widows in
Israel in the days of
Elijah when the sky was closed for three and half years and a severe famine spread over the entire land. It was to none of these that Elijah was sent, but only to a widow in Zarephath in the land of
Sidon.
Again, there were many lepers in Israel during the time of Elijah the prophet yet not one of them was cleansed, but only
Naaman the
Syrian." when the people in the synagogue heard this they were all filled with fury. They rose up, drove him out of the town, and led him to
the brow of the hill on which their town had been built, to hurl him down headlong. But Jesus passed through the midst of them and went away.
The Gospel of the Lord.
Praise to you
Lord Jesus Christ.
Jesus quotes a proverb "Physician cure yourself", what does that mean? I think it means something that we've all heard many, many times and that is charity begins at home. And most of the time when we hear that we don't think anything of it, sure, of course, that’s true.
Isn’t it? Jesus doesn't seem to buy into that proverb though. He comes home, he comes to
Nazareth, his home town. He was not very well accepted in Nazareth because they believed that charity begins at home. And so they expected what Jesus could bring and do would be for their benefit and Jesus says no I just spent 40 days in the desert understanding that it’s not for our benefit. I'm sent out to others I'm sent out to other places, to other people who are in need. And that made the people from Nazareth kind of angry.
They didn't like that. So the next time you remember that proverb charity begins at home, remember Jesus and remember who you are because you too have be designated, have been called by
God the father as my beloved son and my beloved daughter and my favor rests on you and I send you out. This is catholic schools week. Our catholic schools are so valuable, not simply in the good education they give our youngsters but helping them understand who they are in the eyes of God.
Beloved sons and daughters sent out not simply to their own, but to cross boundaries and borders to serve the other because many of the people in our world who are in need are not at our home, they're elsewhere and we are called to reach out to them.
