APRIL 15th 2016 A powerful earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 7.1 struck southern Japan, barely 24 hours after a smaller quake hit the same region and killed nine people.
Japanese broadcaster NHK said calls were coming in from residents reporting people being trapped inside houses and buildings.
The quake shook the Kumamoto region at 1:25 a.m. on Saturday, and several aftershocks soon followed. Japan’s Meteorological Agency issued an advisory for a tsunami up to 3 feet in height along the coast west of the epicenter in Kumamoto. The advisory was lifted less than an hour later.
Sirens from patrol vehicles were heard in the background, as NHK reported from the hardest-hit town of Mashiki. The asphalt-paved area outside the town hall had a fresh crack, apparently made by the latest earthquake. The epicenter of Saturday's earthquake was about 8 miles northwest of Thursday's 6.5 magnitude quake, and at a depth of about 6 miles, was shallower. It hit residents who had suffered through more than 100 aftershocks in the interim.
The Nuclear Regulation Authority said no abnormalities were found at the Sendai nuclear plant, where the only two of Japan’s 43 operable reactors are online. The epicenter was 74 miles northeast of Kyushu Electric Power Co.’s Sendai plant.

Kyushu (九州, Kyūshū?, lit. "Nine Provinces") is the third largest island of Japan and most southwesterly of its four main islands. Its alternate ancient names include Kyūkoku (九国?, "Nine States"), Chinzei (鎮西?, "West of the Pacified Area"), and Tsukushi-no-shima (筑紫島?, "Island of Tsukushi"). The historical regional name is Saikaidō (西海道?, lit. West Sea Circuit) referred to Kyushu and its surrounding islands.
In the 8th century Taihō Code reforms, Dazaifu was established as a special administrative term for the region.
As of 2006, Kyushu has a population of 13,231,995 and covers 35,640 square kilometres (13,760 sq mi).
The island is mountainous, and Japan's most active volcano, Mt Aso at 1,591 metres (5,220 ft), is on Kyushu. There are many other signs of tectonic activity, including numerous areas of hot springs. The most famous of these are in Beppu, on the east shore, and around Mt. Aso, in central Kyushu.
The name Kyūshū comes from the nine ancient provinces of Saikaidō situated on the island: Chikuzen, Chikugo, Hizen, Higo, Buzen, Bungo, Hyūga, Osumi, and Satsuma.

How Japan Prepares for Earthquakes and Tsunami (Kyushu, Kumamoto Earthquakes)
Earthquakes in Kyushu Island, Japan were felt in many areas of Japan including mine in Hiroshima. The tremors I felt caused my building to sway noticeably for several minutes on both days that the earthquakes hit. Japan is no stranger to earthquakes, and in fact it is one of the most active regions in the world. Because of this, they have learned to prepare themselves for disaster when it strikes. This includes evacuation points, and several lines of communications and alerts to warn citizens of imminent danger. Now that I am a resident of Japan, I am learning these things first hand. I hope I don't ever have to use the precautionary systems that are in place, but it is reassuring to know that Japan is prepared. Train Cruise Episode 1 A century old railway in Kyushu
Canadian, Nick Szasz, takes us train cruising, the best way to travel, on the Hisatsu Line in Kyushu that connects Kumamoto to Kagoshima. Known as the Treasury of Railway Heritage, this century-old line has many historic stations and bridges, and is a popular destination for rail enthusiasts. Nick travels along the Kuma River on the Steam Locomotive Hitoyoshi; transfers to the Isaburo Shinpei, which climbs slopes using a loop and a switchback; and boards Hayato no Kaze, a limited express to arrive at Sakurajima. On the way he tastes the local ekiben lunch boxes, and experiences the magnificent natural landscape. -

Detail later [ 熊本地震/ The 2016 Kumamoto Earthquake ] AM 1:25, April 16th. Beppu Oita. This is one of a series of The 2016 Kumamoto Earthquake which has been occurred since April 14th, 2016. This video was shot at my university dorm in Beppu, Oita, about 112km northeast from the point of the earthquake. http://www.TravelsWithSheila.com Marine Steve and I made a beeline to a small street near the Kagoshima train station for Pork Tonkatsu, Japanese for a good 'ole deep fried pork cutlet or schnitzel, more popular than chicken in Japan. Kagoshima is a leading producer of pork, and the Kagoshima kurobuta (black pig) is perhaps the most highly regarded variety. Once we found the recommended restaurants by stopping to point at Japanese characters written down by guide, it wasn't easy to decide on sirloin, filet, and other cuts of black pork. It was yummy but I couldn't decipher any difference in taste between the "black" pig or any ordinary pig... What do I know... -

APRIL 15th 2016 A powerful earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 7.1 struck southern Japan, barely 24 hours after a smaller quake hit the same region and killed nine people.
Japanese broadcaster NHK said calls were coming in from residents reporting people being trapped inside houses and buildings.
The quake shook the Kumamoto region at 1:25 a.m. on Saturday, and several aftershocks soon followed. Japan’s Meteorological Agency issued an advisory for a tsunami up to 3 feet in height along the coast west of the epicenter in Kumamoto. The advisory was lifted less than an hour later.
Sirens from patrol vehicles were heard in the background, as NHK reported from the hardest-hit town of Mashiki. The asphalt-paved area outside the town hall had a fresh crack, apparently made by the latest earthquake. The epicenter of Saturday's earthquake was about 8 miles northwest of Thursday's 6.5 magnitude quake, and at a depth of about 6 miles, was shallower. It hit residents who had suffered through more than 100 aftershocks in the interim.
The Nuclear Regulation Authority said no abnormalities were found at the Sendai nuclear plant, where the only two of Japan’s 43 operable reactors are online. The epicenter was 74 miles northeast of Kyushu Electric Power Co.’s Sendai plant.

Sirens from patrol vehicles were heard in the background, as NHK reported from the hardest-hit town of Mashiki. The asphalt-paved area outside the town hall had a fresh crack, apparently made by the latest earthquake. The epicenter of Saturday's earthquake was about 8 miles northwest of Thursday's 6.5 magnitude quake, and at a depth of about 6 miles, was shallower. It hit residents who had suffered through more than 100 aftershocks in the interim.
The Nuclear Regulation Authority said no abnormalities were found at the Sendai nuclear plant, where the only two of Japan’s 43 operable reactors are online. The epicenter was 74 miles northeast of Kyushu Electric Power Co.’s Sendai plant.

Earthquakes in Kyushu Island, Japan were felt in many areas of Japan including mine in Hiroshima. The tremors I felt caused my building to sway noticeably for several minutes on both days that the earthquakes hit.
Japan is no stranger to earthquakes, and in fact it is one of the most active regions in the world. Because of this, they have learned to prepare themselves for disaster when it strikes. This includes evacuation points, and several lines of communications and alerts to warn citizens of imminent danger.
Now that I am a resident of Japan, I am learning these things first hand. I hope I don't ever have to use the precautionary systems that are in place, but it is reassuring to know that Japan is prepared.

Canadian, Nick Szasz, takes us train cruising, the best way to travel, on the Hisatsu Line in Kyushu that connects Kumamoto to Kagoshima. Known as the Treasury of Railway Heritage, this century-old line has many historic stations and bridges, and is a popular destination for rail enthusiasts.
Nick travels along the Kuma River on the Steam Locomotive Hitoyoshi; transfers to the Isaburo Shinpei, which climbs slopes using a loop and a switchback; and boards Hayato no Kaze, a limited express to arrive at Sakurajima. On the way he tastes the local ekiben lunch boxes, and experiences the magnificent natural landscape.

AM 1:25, April 16th. Beppu Oita.
This is one of a series of The 2016 Kumamoto Earthquake which has been occurred since April 14th, 2016. This video was shot at my university dorm in Beppu, Oita, about 112km northeast from the point of the earthquake.
The first earthquake was M6.4 on 14th April, and the earthquake in this video is M7.3, the biggest one so far.
熊本地震発生直後の大分県別府市の様子です。活断層の影響により、震源地からは100km以上離れているのにも関わらず、震度6弱を記録しました。12時間経った今も不定期に余震が続いています。

Marine Steve and I made a beeline to a small street near the Kagoshima train station for Pork Tonkatsu, Japanese for a good 'ole deep fried pork cutlet or schnitzel, more popular than chicken in Japan.
Kagoshima is a leading producer of pork, and the Kagoshima kurobuta (black pig) is perhaps the most highly regarded variety. Once we found the recommended restaurants by stopping to point at Japanese characters written down by guide, it wasn't easy to decide on sirloin, filet, and other cuts of black pork. It was yummy but I couldn't decipher any difference in taste between the "black" pig or any ordinary pig... What do I know...
